User questions & answers

Question: I have heard that a second hole is a good idea, allowing blue birds to be able to escape if threatened by sparrows, etc.Has anyone tried to add a hole
Answer: European house sparrows are a danger to many domestic birds and especially bluebirds. Experts encourage their eradication. Domestic sparrows (russet, song, white throated, etc.) are not a problem. The two-entry nesting boxes use a special design that allows the bluebird to escape via the second doorway to take the fight outside, where they are competitive with the house sparrow in a battle. Otherwise the house sparrow will destroy the eggs and/or kill the parents in the enclosed area. House sparrows are the scourge of the "bird community." I wouldn't try to adapt an one-entry box into a two-entry box. You can do an online search for "2-hole mansion" for plans. Nesting boxes are pretty easy and inexpensive to build, often from a single board, cedar or pine, and it's a fun project.
Question: Is this birdhouse already put together
Answer: Yes, this nice sturdy birdhouse is ready to hang. I have mine on a tree, but it is intended to put on a post. Very solid, good quality.
Question: Can you put this on a pergola post? or is that a bad idea
Answer: It would definitely be a bad idea. If you want to attract bluebirds then the house should not be attached to a tree or anything else that a raccoon can climb. We have ours attached to t-posts or 3/4" conduit. The instructions for the bluebird houses recommend them being placed in the open and about 50 feet from the nearest perch.
Question: Do you supply houses for Western bluebirds? Think their holes are a little bigger
Answer: This box and many others that you will see with a 1 1/2" entrance will work fine for western bluebirds. Some suppliers label some boxes as "western" with a 1 9/16" hole and "eastern" with a 1 1/2" hole, but the larger size is actually intended to accommodate mountain bluebirds, which are present in some parts of the west. So, in short, 1 9/16" is sold as the safe size to attract any bluebird in western north America, while 1 1/2" is a fine size for the specific species "western bluebird."

Woodlink Patriotic Wren House with Three Perches

Woodlink

Product description

Provide native backyard birds a thematic and beautiful roosting spot with this Woodlink Patriotic Wren House with Three Perches. The traditional color scheme sports star and stripe accents, perfectly evoking a flag, while the wooden construction forms a hardy bird home. Three 1" diameter entry holes occupy the front of the abode, each with a 0.75" long perch below it for birds to stand. These openings all lead to a single, interior chamber, covered by a pitched roof to shield birds from the elements. The stylized American flag on the roof captures attention, and a red star around each perch enhances the effect. A distressed white finish on the rest of the unit keeps the wood grain visible and lends a rustic hint to your yard. Ventilation gaps beneath the roof overhang help keep the interior cool for nestlings, and holes on the base allow any water to drain. One side panel swings upward for nest checks, and the flat base is simple to place on a level surface. Add a mounting bracket (not included) to the back or base of this item for more placement options. The familiar color scheme displays your love of the country to any garden visitors, and a top cupola adds striking height to the home. User questions & answers

Question: Is there supposed to be a half inch to 3/4 “ gap all around the bottom? Seems like bugs/snakes, etc could enter easily
Answer: There is a gap but I think that’s so liquids can drain out. I’m quite certain it’s intentional. It’s hanging from a tree so I wouldn’t worry about snakes. Bugs could fly in the hole if they really wanted in.
Question: Has anyone painted this ... or do you leave it natural? Cuirous, as painting w/ latex seems like it would weather longer
Answer: Leave it natural as it is intended. Some birds will not use "houses" that are painted. The paint is for our benefit mostly for the cuteness factor.
Question: how do I clean it
Answer: Appears only way to clean is either by hand thru a 1" hole, and/or use a vacuum with small diameter hose. I ended up installing (2) two 1"x1" hinges; that is the total width and length. Any small hinge will do, however, if decide to go this route, suggest purchase the 1" x 1" hinge because 1 side of the hinge will set flush on the edge of stationary roof and the other side of the hinge will screw into the top of what will be the lid side of the roof. I used the mini screws that came with the hinge package. I did not remove any screws on the birdhouse until the hinges were installed, made it much easier and the project took approx. 15 min's. Once the hinge(s) were installed I removed the 4 screws and did not find it jeopardized the integrity of the birdhouse, however, since there were extra screws from the birdhouse I uses 2 screws for additional support on the stationary side of the roof, and currently 1 of the other screws to secure the lid to the birdhouse frame.
Question: What size is the hole
Answer: I believe that the hole is about an inch and one quarter wide.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be opened for viewing
Answer: Yes, the front hinges at the top and swings upward for cleaning, so you could open it for viewing. I try not to disturb the nesting birds, however.
Question: is this made specifically for wood ducks
Answer: Yes. If you look up wood duck box construction specifications on various sites you will find specs to be very similar. If mounted on a tree I have found other species to occupy also such as screech owls, squirrels, pileated woodpeckers, etc.
Question: How should I mount this
Answer: I have had most success with those I have mounted on a post near the stream bank. I use an 8 foot pressure treated 4X4. I mount a varmint guard shield a couple of feet below the house.
Question: How high off the ground should this be mounted? JO
Answer: Research suggests 4-6 feet above the ground. We mounted ours six feet above. Be sure to use some kind of baffle on your post. We used a section of metal furnace conduit, but a PVC pipe dropped over the pole would work. You can purchase baffles that mount right under the box. It's imperative to do so as raccoons, cats, snakes, etc. can climb a wooden post and raid the box. Good luck!

User questions & answers

Question: Can squirrels get into this wren house
Answer: An adult squirrel can get into anything made of thin wood. I hung the house on a small limb that could support the house but would be a problem for the squirrels. I had no problem with the squirrel damaging the house. Plus, the house wrens would commonly "dive bomb" the squirrels when they got too close to the house.
Question: I can't see the loop at the top of the cable, but since cable attaches to the front and back, how can you hang so that you look at it straight on
Answer: I just used a toggle cord to adjust the position of the house on the cable. That way I could watch the entrance to the house.
Question: how much does the house itself weight
Answer: If it weighs 2lbs I would be surprised. It's cedar so lighter because of that.
Question: Is there access to allow for cleaning the birdhouse
Answer: Yes there is acess for cleaning in the back of the item.
