12 best fireplace grates
Fireplace grates are essential components used in indoor fireplaces and outdoor fire pits. They serve several important functions and are related to grids and grates used in outdoor cooking tools and accessories. Here's what you need to know about fireplace grates:
Support for Logs: The primary function of a fireplace grate is to provide a raised platform for logs and firewood. By elevating the wood off the floor of the fireplace or fire pit, air can circulate more freely around the logs, facilitating better combustion and a more efficient fire.
Improved Airflow: Fireplace grates are designed with gaps or openings between the bars. These openings allow air to flow underneath the burning logs, helping to increase the oxygen supply to the fire. This improved airflow leads to a hotter and more even burn.
Ash Collection: Another advantage of using a fireplace grate is that it allows ashes and debris from the burning wood to fall through the openings and collect beneath the grate. This keeps the area around the logs clean and prevents excessive ash buildup, which can hinder the fire.
Longevity of Fireplace: Placing logs directly on the floor of a fireplace can lead to damage over time due to exposure to intense heat. Fireplace grates help protect the base of the fireplace from damage by providing a barrier between the fire and the floor.
Variety of Materials: Fireplace grates are commonly made from durable materials such as steel, cast iron, or stainless steel. These materials are chosen for their heat resistance and longevity. The choice of material can impact the grate's durability and appearance.
Different Designs: Fireplace grates come in various designs and sizes to fit different fireplace and fire pit dimensions. Some grates are designed to be narrow, while others are wider to accommodate larger logs. The design of the grate can also influence the aesthetics of the fireplace or fire pit.
Outdoor Cooking: While not their primary purpose, some fireplace grates are adapted for outdoor cooking. They can be used for grilling or cooking over an open flame in a fire pit. These grates often have a more robust design and may include features like adjustable heights for cooking versatility.
Maintenance: Regular cleaning and maintenance of a fireplace grate are important to ensure it continues to function effectively. Removing ashes and debris from under the grate and inspecting it for signs of wear and tear are part of routine upkeep.
In summary, fireplace grates are functional accessories that enhance the performance of indoor fireplaces and outdoor fire pits. They elevate logs for better airflow and combustion, collect ash and debris, protect the fireplace floor, and come in various designs and materials to suit different needs and aesthetics. Additionally, some fireplace grates can be adapted for outdoor cooking purposes, making them versatile additions to your outdoor living space.

Steps for Buying a Fireplace Grate
- If you have a zero clearance fireplace, measure your existing grate or refer to the owner’s manual for appropriate grate dimensions. For your safety, do not follow the measuring instructions below. Improperly sizing your grate may harm your appliance and may increase your risk of a fire.
- If you have a masonry fireplace, measure the firebox following the instructions below.
- Determine the necessary clearance from the bottom of the grate. If you have a log lighter in your fireplace, measure the height of the log lighter to ensure the fireplace grate will sit over it.
How to Measure For A Fireplace Grate?
- Measure the front width of your firebox
- Measure the back width of your firebox
- Measure the depth of your firebox
- Subtract 6 inches from each measurement to determine the grate size needed
Leaving a 3 inch clearance on each side of grate allows your firebox to have the proper function and airflow. If your grate is too small, there will be too much air flow leading to faster burn times. If your grate is too big, the fire may damage the walls of your firebox.

User questions & answers
Question: | How far is the back middle leg from the back of the fireplace wall |
Answer: | It can go within about 4 or 5 inches if the grate is touching the wall |
Question: | Do the front and back match in shape for double sided fireplaces |
Answer: | As the description mentions, it is a tapered design. It is wider in the front and narrower in the back to fit most fireplaces that are also shaped like that. It is not obvious from the front-on view as one can't easily tell how much or if, at all, it is smaller in the back or not - one might think one is just seeing some perspective effects. For instance, my 18" wide grate has the tines at 17.5" width in front and only 13.5" width at the back. I do think it would still look fairly nice even with the double sided fireplace, but certainly understand why you might want one that was rectangular for your application. |
Question: | It’s not clear what the dimensions 15x14x7.5 represent. Is that the overall size of Width, depth and height |
Answer: | 15 inches wide (in the front), 14 inches deep, and 7.5 inches high from bottom of legs to top of log supports |
Question: | How high off ground |
Answer: | The clearance below the front and back horizontal rails is 3.75". The clearance below the front to back tines is 4.5". |

Answer: | This grate measures 20 inches wide by 10 inches deep by 4 inches high. |
