Question: How would you compare the performance between 14.5 an 18.5? same amount of charcoal? same amount of time to cook? any diff in temp control
Answer: Have used the 14.5 a few times now (tri-tip, meatloaf, two hot-n-fast cooks with pork butts)...It's a pretty cool little cooker. Have several years experience cooking with a tamale steamer converted smokey joe. Thus far, I'd have to say it cooks similarly to those (with the added bonus of a water pan and door). It holds less charcoal than the 18.5, for sure. For the hot-n-fast pork butt cooks I had to lift off top/center sections and refuel...not too difficult, but something I don't have to do with the 18.5. Haven't really tried a true low-n-slow cook yet...can't say how long cook time might be under those conditions (have had good 6 hour plus burn times on the converted smokey joes). When I cook hot-n-fast, to be honest, I just let 'er rip...this little guy gets plenty hot, plenty fast. Obviously, there's less space in the 14.5, you can get a butt on each grate and that's about it. I don't use water when cooking hot-n-fast either, but the water pan is much smaller than the 18.5. I think I'm going to enjoy cooking on this, but If I had to choose one...I might choose the 18.5 (increased charcoal/cooking capacity). Lucky me, I've got both and a couple of 22.5's!! Hope this helps.
Question: Am struggling with which size Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker to get - 18.5 inch or 22.5 inch. Can you tell me the advantages to both. Thank you
Answer: I have owned the 22.5" for a year and I can tell you that it is worth the purchase. It can hold any piece of meat that you can think of putting on it and it stays fired up for all smoke jobs. I have smoked whole turkeys, briskets, pork butts, chicken, and burgers/brats/dogs. I would say I've put roughly 25 smokes on it and I have never had any issues with it. I also smoke for 4 people generally. The 18.5" is going to be exactly the same thing except in a smaller form. It may not have the room you are looking for if you get a large cut. I have seen a lot of comments saying that the 22.5" uses more fuel and while that is correct it doesn't have to be filled to the brim for a smoke. I normally use a half ring and if I need a few more coals I just throw them on. Never had an issue with it. I would rather have the size and not need it than regret not getting the extra room. If this is well taken care of it could last for several decades so what is the big deal with spending an extra $100. Just my 2 cents.
Question: What is the country of orgin for this Smoker
Answer: 8th best country in the world! The United States.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this the same cover that comes with a new WSM? If not, please describe what is different. Thanks
Answer: Yes and No. I bought a WSM in 2014 and ruined the cover (long story). I bought this cover as a replacement and it is different than the one that came with mine in 2014. This cover is much nicer, and is a newer design. It fits perfectly, is a much nicer feeling vinyl, and doesn't have the stupid elastic on the bottom. From what I can tell, it's they give this new cover out with the WSM now.

Question: Can these be used with a small stove top smoker, or are they only for outdoor unit usage
Answer: Hi! These wood chips are for outdoor use only. Thanks!
Question: Are these actually chips or are they chunks
Answer: They are chips, not chunks. A typical size might be 1/2 inch wide by 1 inches long, and perhaps an eighth to a quarter inch thick. Some are larger, some are smaller.
Question: Hey, the same size flavor bagged is $3.99 on the weber site. why is this bag listed so expensive? in fact, three 3x more
Answer: Could be an individual seller outside of Weber???? Just my thought.
Question: Can these be added to a bonfire for smell
Answer: Hello! Technically, yes, you could add them to a bonfire, but the smell given off would likely go unnoticed, as it would be overpowered by the other wood that's burning. These wood chips are meant for adding flavor to food that's being grilled or smoked. Thanks!

User questions & answers

Question: I'm a total rookie. Can someone please recommend the best thermometer? Wireless or wired? Help
Answer: Seriously, go to Webbers website and check out the video on how to tell when meat is done. It’s all about touch. If you’re doing a roast or a whole chicken or a small turkey, yeah, you may want a thermometer. But for steaks and chicken breasts, use the finger test. It’s easy to learn, and once you do, you’ll cook things perfectly every time.
Question: Where is it made
Answer: 100% of the parts come from Mexico/China. It is only turned into packagable sub-assembly in America. Not really any American content and a little labour only ASSEMBLED in the U.S.A. Big deal Still it is a good item and I bought one.
Question: Is there enough clarence between lid and cooking grate to cook "Beer Can Chickens" if so how many? Also what about a turkey and a large pork ham
Answer: Beer can chicken is a gimmick, and yes it’ll fit under the lid of a 22” grill, and yes a 12 lb Turkey will cook here easily. I cooked my first Turkey on an 18” Weber. Have fun
Question: Theres another one like this but 199.99. Whats the difference between
Answer: Hi, Thanks for your question! The $199.99 models is probably our Master-Touch Kettle, which is the same as the Original Kettle Premium, except it also is about 2" taller, has a warming rack, rubber wheels, a Gourmet BBQ System and 2 charbasket charcoal holders. Thanks!

User questions & answers

Question: Do you have to purchase a charcoal starter or chimney starter for this? I'm thinking about purchasing as a gift and want to make sure
Answer: It's a matter of personal preference. You can start your coals in the grill with lighter fluid like any other grill, or use a chimney. I use both, if I have lighter fluid then I usually do it that way, if not then I will use the chimney, also the chimney works well if you're cooking something that takes a while and you need to add charcoal.
Question: how tall is it
Answer: Hi! Thanks for your question! The 22" Original Kettle Premium measures about 39.5" tall. Thanks!
Question: does it have a thermostat built into the lid
Answer: Hi! The Original Kettle Premium does include a built-in thermometer. Thanks!
Question: How many people can you cook for on this grill? i.e. how many chicken breasts or burgers could you fit on the grill at one time
Answer: Bear in mind this will depend on how you setup your charcoal for direct/indirect cooking. Probably, you'll set the pile of coals on one side of the grill, and leave the other half for indirect (if you're using the Weber Chimney to start your coals, a full chimney really only covers about half anyway). You'll likely want to char the burgers over direct heat first, then move to indirect if needed. This gives about half of the usable area on the grill. So I would say you could comfortably fit 6-8 decent sized burgers, or 4-5 chicken breasts on one side of the grill at any time. That being said, it would be easy to cook for, say, 6-7 people by cooking over direct heat first, moving to indirect to finish, and starting the next batch of burgers/chicken over direct (cycle it).

User questions & answers

Question: How well does this pack away for trips
Answer: A hibachi would be better option for pack-way tripping.
Question: We got this but our apartments don't allow charcoal grills. Any other type of grill is fine, just not charcoal. Can we convert this at all
Answer: Nope. It's basically an aluminum bowl with holes in the bottom and in the cover. There isn't much room to convert, unless you intend on using it to, basically, build a gas grill from scratch.
Question: Is the recommended amount of charcoal (50 pcs) enough to cook with, or do you need more
Answer: Weber recommends for direct grilling method to start out with 50 pieces. Use the direct method for foods that take less than 25 minutes to cook: steaks, chops, kabobs, vegetables, and the like. If you are cooking alot of food you may have to add charcoal. Thank you for your inquiry.
Question: I am from Indonesia and I have been interested to buy this product, how do I buy this product

I do not know anything about retail options for you to buy a Weber grill in Indonesia. If you try oredering through Amazon, be sure and look carefully at shippings costs.

User questions & answers

Question: What are the assembled measurements of this grill? Height x diameter. Thanks
Answer: Pretty close to what I got...I came up with 18 inches high, but it's hard to measure. 14 3/4 to 15 is a good diameter.
Question: how does it compare to the Smokey Joe Gold grill
Answer: Here's what I put in my review: "The reviews for the gold suggested that the silver was a better option for two reasons: the ash catcher tray and the fact that the holes were on the bottom rather than the side. The Gold cannot have ashes removed unless the coals are out and the charcoal rack can be removed. After using the silver, I question what good the ash catcher tray is. How do you clean it out while charcoals remain lit or unlit in the grill? With a tiny little brush or shovel? It's cute.As for the holes on the bottom. This is all well and good until your charcoal crumbles and the ashes clog the holes. And if you have the lid on, the charcoals go out. And you wonder why your hamburgers are not cooked. Having the holes on the side would keep air flow, regardless of crumbling charcoals.Third, the Gold has a handle, which would make this easier to move. After the fact, I discovered that Cook's Illustrated has reviewed portable grills, and they included the Gold in their review, but not the silver."
Question: Can anyone recommend this grill vs. the Smokey Joe Gold Vs. the Go Anywhere Grill? I don't want to travel with grill and want to use in a screened in porch. Thanks
Answer: The Silver has an air damper at the bottom. The Gold does not. The Gold allows you to lock the lid to the kettle for easier transportation. For open grilling, both will do the same job. With both models, you can easily starve airflow to the fire in case of flare-ups. The Go Anywhere is designed to be portable, and with a rectangular surface area, it allows for a different arrangement of food and charcoal. The go anywhere allows for stacking your charcoal on one side, so that you can have a hot side and cool side. With both the Silver and Gold models, the coals are usually right in the middle unless you use a patio brick or some other improvised device to keep the coals on one side. Depending on what you plan on cooking, you may prefer the rectangular grill surface. The Go Anywhere, with the rectangular design, is better for travel and storage. The Go Anywhere has two dampers on top, and dampers along the bottom, for better control over airflow. The Silver has a damper on the top, and a damper on the bottom. The Gold only has the damper on the lid; simple enough to extinguish heat with, but not the ideal way to feed fresh air to the coals. With the Go Anywhere's rectangle shape, you'll be able to use more of the available square inches for ribs that won't fit the Silver & Gold. At the end of the day, none of these units are designed to cook larger cuts of meat. If you get your butcher to cut a 3 bone standing rib roast from the end with the smaller bones, you can get it on the grill - but closing the lid over your roast is another matter. All three can do a small cut of brisket, a whole chicken if you butterfly or quarter it, pork loins, pork butt, and just about anything that you can close the lid on - if you get good enough to be able to control the temperature. The real trick to turning out great food, with all three of these grills and any other grill for that matter, is temperature control. Master the flame, and you could turn out everything from smoke trout to wood fired pizza. The true adventurist will even use it as a fire pit for wok cooking. Or keep it simple with these little grills, and stick to kebabs, burgers, hot dogs, short ribs, and steaks.
Question: How high does the grill stand without the lid? Thanks
Answer: Hello, had to put my beer down and go measure it. it is 12" high without the lid. I just put mine on a set of cinder blocks so you don't have to bend down all day while cooking, or you can put it on a picnic table as long as it is not plastic. I love mine. take care

Question: When using in a chimney where do you place the cube
Answer: Our Yogurt Maker is rated for 110V-120V and uses the standard US power cable. The item can be used in other countries that are rated for 110V-120V with a power adapter.
Question: Can it use for set up a campfire ? thanks
Answer: Greetings,The only recipes I found where the couple that where in the manual & they where just the basics. I did however purchase "Cultures for Health Bulgarian Yogurt Starter Culture" here on amazon. It came with really good instructions & tons of tips & other info on their website. My first batch with the Starter was very thin, but had a good clean yogurt smell so i used it for my next bad.. the next was still a bit thin but by my 3rd batch I was getting a good taste & texture. You can also use a good store bought yogurt as your starter as well. The ones I tried that worked well where Activa & Stonyfield whole milk plain yogurt, both of these provided a decent yogurt. Flavorings can be added right before the yogurt is served. Sweet options include fresh or preserved fruit, honey, molasses, palm sugar, jam, and flavored syrups. All you need to make homemade yogurt is a half gallon of milk and about a half cup of yogurt. Whole or 2% milk will make the thickest, creamiest yogurt, but you can also use skim milk if you like. For the yogurt, either Greek or regular yogurt is fine, but avoid any flavorings; stick to plain, unflavored yogurts. this is the basics What You NeedIngredients1/2 gallon milk — whole or 2% are best, but skim can also be used1/2 cup commercial yogurt containing active culturesEquipment3 quart or larger Dutch oven or heavy saucepan with a lidSpatulaInstant-read or candy thermometer (one that can clip to the side of the pan)Small measuring cup or small bowlWhisk
Question: How many cubes do you need to start a charcoal fire
Answer: I use soy milk. It works perfectly using Ultimate Flora Probiotic, 50 billion live cultures as the starter in about 12 hours. I read that Almond milk will not support the growth of the culture so I have never tried it.
Question: I read somewhere that once the packaging is opened, the cube will get dried (after a peried of time) and will not be able to use. Is this true
Answer: The sizes of the Jars are, Diameter: 2 1/2 inches, Height: 3 1/4 inches.

Question: For someone using a chimney, is the propane ignition rendered useless
Answer: Thank you for your interest in the grill and smoker Shelly. Yes, you can mix wood with the charcoal. We recommend for an On-Demand smoke, add 1-2 chunks (no larger than your fist) directly to the Ash bin, this will last approximately 2-3 hours. For a Controlled smoke we recommend, add four (4) pounds of charcoal and this one (1) wood chunk, creating layers of charcoal and wood chunks. We hope this information helps.
