Answer: | I burn Sugar Maple in mine, the only problem is that is DOES NOT burn long with wood or charcoal before the ash which is very small fills up and blokes air flow to fire. I built a removable ash pan for mine that hold ash from an eight hour burn/cook (pork sholder). I've have fire hot enough to pegged out the thermometer without effecting the paint. |

Answer: | My opinion is just turned around from these others, in that once meat reaches a certain temp, usually within about two hours, it will not add any more smoke flavor. Depending on what type of wood your using, hickory being one, you will give your meat a bitter taste. So after using your favorite wood initially then I will switch over to only charcoal if I'm using my Weber or a white oak wood that is very mild to finish it up. Nothing like smoking meat for 8-10 hours and have it taste bitter and over powering. Perfect smoked meat every time for me is charcoal on the Weber with the soak wood chunks for the first two hours and nothing but just plain charcoal the rest. I buy the Kingsford charcoal on memorial and labor day when there two for one. Generally a 5lb bag of chunks will last me nearly a year. So these guys spending $100 to smoke what only cost me about $10 per session. Get the pork butt to 190 degrees, wrap it in heavy duty foil and let it go another 30-45 minutes wrapped, pulled pork every time. Follow these instructions and I'd put your meat against anybody's taste wise... and enjoy the compliments! |

Answer: | Please DO NOT use on wooden deck. The heat from my smoker was too hot and caught my whole house on fire. The fire inspector said always use on high heat material like concrete, and no wood or grass. |

Answer: | Not difficult. The racks, drip pan and chip box come out and can be cleaned in your sink or dishwasher. The inside of the smoker is gradually "cured" by the smoke and will take on a dark coating. You can clean this like you would an oven, but you really don't need to. I do recommend that you clean the smoke coating from the glass window each time so you can see the meat cooking. This can be cleaned with soap and water, or with a non abrasive cleaner. Be sure to get all of the cleaner off the smoker so you don't have any issues with the cleaner adding unwanted flavors to the next cooking. |

Answer: | I haven't tested the thermometer. What I do know is that I have trusted it enough on the 12 or so briskets I have done. I like to cook them at 250 degrees for a hour per pound. Always consistently great. Best answer I have for you. |
Question: | Can the gas portion use natural gas |
Answer: | This grill CANNOT be converted to natural gas as it is. I wanted to do this, and I broke a burner when attempting to change the orifice. They are sealed by the manufacturer. The cost for a replacement set of 4 burners was around $75. Natural gas is low pressure gas that does not require a regulator but does require an orifice with larger holes than propane and a control valve designed for natural gas. If you connect the stock burners directly to natural gas, the pressure is so low you do not get enough flame and heat to cook properly. I called the manufacturer who told me that there is no conversion kit for this grill, and there never will be. Too bad, because that would make this grill/smoker combo perfect in my book. That aside, I am using the propane which works well. I still love this unit for all the cooking options you get in one assembly: smoking, charcoal, and gas. There are grills designed to handle natural gas by using a conversion kit, but I haven't seen one as versatile as this unit. It's well built too. |

Answer: | Only if you truly hate yourself. I own this model and love it as a smoker, but it is not a grill. The bottom grate in the main cook chamber is non-removable making cleanup impossible other than with a wet-dry vac. Do NOT try to direct grill with this unit! There are other units that have removable coal beds in the cook chamber that are ideal combo units. |

This smoker is way overpriced .Lowes and Walmart sell this exact unit for $288-300. The Longhorn sells in the $ 600 range. If it says Highland ,it's the smaller smoker. Char-broil sells cheaper smokers but even though this says char-broil it isn't cheap metal.This smoker weighs around 200 pounds. |

Answer: | Lighter fluid is fine if you use a fire source which gets easily to the charcoal deep in the barrel. Sturdy wooden matches are suggested. I recommend a chimney starter. They are an incredible investment which will provide two advantages: no petroleum scent to your grilled meal and a whopping savings of cash for charcoal. One of my chimney starters is now 26 years in service |

Answer: | The bottom of this cooker has a wire rack inside of it where the charcoal is placed on but I guess you don't have to use the rack if you don't want to, and the ashes just collect at the bottom under the rack which you can easily dump out after a few uses. |

Answer: | The rotisserie turns 360 degrees. It has a feature that changes direction of rotation from clockwise to counter clockwise when turned off and then turned back on. I don't know why it has this feature. Obviously, it does not change the exposure to heat. I have used the unit several times without any problem. It is well made. I like it. |

Question: | How difficult is it to clean the old ashes from this grill |
Answer: | Extremely easy to remove ashes. There is a removable lower section. You simply unlatch to catches and slide the entire bottom (ash hopper and lower vent) and dump. The good news is that the hardwood charcoal generates very little ash. To replace there is a guide and you close the two latches. I did experience water in the ash pan (there is an interior metal sleeve around the ashes) that separates it from the shield. I read on reviews this was a problem with someone else. I simply drilled a 1/4" hole and problem solved. I keep my Akorn closed and under cover at all times when not in use, but the moisture comes from condensate since the unit is closed and the moisture is trapped in the enclosure. I am not sure why Char-Griller does not have a drain on the ash pan with a valve. My son has a Big Green Egg and ash removal is a chore since you have to scrap the ash out and there is no easy way to clean. |

Answer: | You won't need to add coals for smoking. I just smoked a Butt over the weekend and even through overnight lows at freezing easily held 225-235 for 16 hours (used a thermoworks billows). Out of curiosity I left it going to see how long it would hold temp, finally started dropping at 55 hours. That said I did load the most charcoal I've ever use as previously I'd only done ribs and turkeys, and it was fairly full. There actually were some unburned coals left when it finally was snuffed out by the pile of ash blocking off airflow from the vent. |

Answer: | I use this grill for all my smoking needs now. I also own a Bradley electric and a propane smoker but I like the results I get with this unit better although there's a learning curve figuring out how to keep the temperature low (keep vents almost totally closed) because once it gets too hot it's difficult to cool down. You do need a pan or stone to catch the drippings to prevent flare ups. Don't spend any money for this, use an old pie tin or disposable aluminum foil pan. |
