10 best weed control for lawns

Weed control for lawns is an essential aspect of lawn care and maintenance to ensure that your lawn remains healthy, green, and free from unwanted weeds. Here are some key points related to weed control for lawns:

  1. Preventive Measures: Preventing weeds from taking root in your lawn is the first line of defense. Proper lawn care practices such as regular mowing, proper watering, and fertilization can help promote a dense and healthy lawn that is less susceptible to weeds.

  2. Manual Removal: Hand-pulling weeds is a chemical-free method of weed control. It's important to ensure you remove the entire weed, including the roots, to prevent regrowth. This method is best suited for small areas or isolated weed infestations.

  3. Lawn Mowing: Regular and proper mowing can help control weeds by reducing their access to sunlight. Keep your lawn mower blades sharp and adjust the cutting height to avoid scalping, which can weaken the grass and promote weed growth.

  4. Use of Herbicides: Herbicides, or weed killers, can be effective in controlling weeds in lawns. There are two main types:

    • Pre-emergent herbicides: These are applied before weeds germinate and prevent them from sprouting. They are effective against annual weeds like crabgrass.
    • Post-emergent herbicides: These are applied to actively growing weeds and can be selective (targeting specific weeds) or non-selective (killing most plants). Be sure to follow the product label instructions carefully.
  5. Spot Treatment: If weeds are sparse in your lawn, spot treatment with a selective post-emergent herbicide can be more targeted and efficient than treating the entire lawn.

  6. Weed and Feed Products: Some lawn care products combine fertilizers with pre-emergent herbicides to both nourish your grass and prevent weed growth. These products are best applied during the appropriate season for weed prevention.

  7. Mulching: Applying a layer of organic mulch to garden beds and around trees can help suppress weed growth by blocking sunlight and preventing weed seeds from germinating.

  8. Regular Maintenance: Consistent lawn care practices, including regular weeding and maintenance, are essential for long-term weed control. Over time, a well-maintained lawn will be less susceptible to weed infestations.

  9. Reseeding or Overseeding: If your lawn has been heavily infested with weeds, consider reseeding or overseeding to fill in bare spots and promote the growth of healthy grass that can outcompete weeds.

  10. Lawn Care Service: For more extensive or persistent weed problems, you may consider hiring a professional lawn care service that can assess your specific situation and provide targeted weed control solutions.

Remember that effective weed control may require a combination of these methods, and the choice of approach depends on the type of weeds in your lawn, the extent of the infestation, and your specific lawn care goals. Always follow safety precautions and product instructions when using herbicides to ensure the health of your lawn and the environment.

Answer: You need to lift and pull so no a dog nose would not open it
Question: How soon after you water it in after the 48 hours can you mow
Answer: Since it is installed with brackets on each side there isn’t a way to use 2 of them together. It works really well in an open doorway or for stairs as shown in the picture.
Question: What are the active ingredients
Answer: The correct answer is this is a 36 inch gate therefore it opens to 36 inches and when closed it is only 11.5" wide...... Very narrow when closed The other models are 60 inches open/15.5 inches closed.... 84 inches opened/21.5 inches closed and finally 108 inches opened (9FT!!!)/25.5 inches closed. Prevent Weeds All Season Long

Barricade is The Andersons professional-grade pre-emergent weed control. Containing 0.48% of the active ingredient prodiamine, Barricade is one of the best and most cost-effective granular weed preventers on the market. It can be used on established lawns and landscape beds to prevent over 30 grass and broadleaf weeds like crabgrass, goosegrass, foxtail, lambsquarter, henbit and more.

Barricade features The Andersons patented Dispersible Granular (DG) Technology which allows each granule to disperse into thousands of micro particles after coming into contact with water. Because of DG Technology, Barricade can move past the thatch layer of your lawn and into the soil where it prevents the germination of weed seeds.

When To Apply Barricade - Spring and Fall

Barricade is a pre-emergent weed control, which means that is designed to prevent weeds. Application timing is critical to the product's performance.

To prevent summer annual weeds in both northern and southern turf types, apply Barricade in early spring prior to soil temperatures reaching 55 degrees Fahrenheit at a four inch depth. Applying at this time will prevent weed seeds from germinating.

In southern zones, Barricade can be reapplied in the fall to prevent annual winter weeds like poa annua, also known as bluegrass.

Remember, Barricade must receive irrigation or light rainfall of at least .05 inches for the herbicide prevention to activate.

Barricade and Seeding

In the same way that Barricade prevents the germination of weeds, it can also inhibit the germination of turf.

If you already seeded wait 60 days or until after the second mowing, whichever is longer, before you apply Barricade.

How long you should wait to seed or overseed after applying Barricade depends on your climate. Refer to the table below for recommended intervals.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this harm my Bermuda grass
Answer: This is highly recommended for Bermuda grass which is why I made my original purchase. Don’t put it on too heavy and don’t put it on in the hottest part of the summer. Otherwise it’s an excellent product.
Question: Will this prevent weeds and not kill my moss
Answer: This product does have some pre-emergent in it (isoxaben and dicamba) though it does not prevent as many weeds as something like prodiamine (sp?). Look at the label. The weeds that have the number 1 next to them, this product will kill those weeds and act as a pre-emergent to them. Here is a PDF to the product label that has a better zoom than the amazon pictures. https://images.homedepot-static.com/catalog/pdfImages/9f/9f2c6180-d51a-484b-a5a3-be86eb622b56.pdf

User questions & answers

Question: What is the expiration date of this product
Answer: Yes my bag was also expired and this stuff damaged my lawn and left the weeds. Would never purchase this product
Question: Does this work to get rid of Poa Annua
Answer: Use a Pre-Emergent in Late Summer The Poa annua seeds produced in the spring wait patiently in the soil for the cooler temperature of fall to arrive before they sprout. You can stop them from sprouting by applying a pre-emergent weed control product, like Scotts® WeedEx™ Prevent with Halts®, in early fall (August through early September). Follow up your pre-emergent weed control application with an application of Scotts® Turf Builder® WinterGuard® Fall Lawn Food to help your lawn recover from the stresses of summer and keep it thick and green.
Question: In central KY am I considered southern or northern for weed control
Answer: I also live in central Kentucky. Not so important for weed control but it is important for grass seed. Go with northern to be safe.
Question: How long after application before I can plant new seed
Answer: Normally it’s 3-4 weeks. Keep in mind, I always spread a thin layer of top soil later and throw down seeds and starter fertilizer. I do not throw seed directly on grass.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it prevent crabgrass
Answer: Yes - this product is very effective in the prevention of crabgrass and other weeds as listed on the product label.
Question: Can this be used on Zoysia Grass
Answer: Yes this may be used in established Zoysia.
Question: What are the spreader settings for a scotts edge guard spreader
Answer: It varies depending on how much of a coat you want to apply. The pictures on the page show that the edge spreader can range from 4 to 7.5
Question: When should I put it down
Answer: In the late winter or early spring. Crabgrass and other annual weeds that you are trying to prevent often germinate after several days with soil temperatures (NOT air temperatures) being around 55 degrees. The microbes in the soil are what break down this pre-emergent and since microbes in the soil are fairly dormant in cold weather, that means you can put this down early, well before the soil reaches 55 degrees and the pre-emergent herbicide will still be active when the soil reaches the temperatures where annual weeds start to germinate. This does not kill the seeds, it stops root development as the seeds germinate so the weed/plant does not reach a stage where it will emerge from the soil and grow. Many lawn care professionals put down their pre-emergent herbicides when the soil temperatures are in the 35-45 degree range to prevent weeds. Oddly, I have yet to see anybody state an actual temperature for the soil as a guide to apply pre-emergence herbicides in he fall...? Keep in mind this will prevent plants from growing, so if you are planning on putting down new grass seed or overseeding to thicken growth in your lawn, this will also prevent desirable plants and grass from germinating as well.
