10 best weed and crabgrass killers

Weed and crabgrass killers are products used in lawn care and gardening to eliminate unwanted weeds and crabgrass from lawns, gardens, and other outdoor spaces. These products are designed to control and eradicate invasive plants that can compete with desirable grasses and plants for nutrients, water, and sunlight. Below are some common types of weed and crabgrass killers and their characteristics:

  1. Herbicides: Herbicides are chemical compounds specifically formulated to target and kill unwanted weeds. There are two main categories of herbicides: selective and non-selective.

    • Selective Herbicides: These are designed to target specific types of weeds while leaving desirable plants unharmed. They are often used in lawns to control broadleaf weeds like dandelions while preserving grass.

    • Non-Selective Herbicides: These herbicides kill a wide range of plant species and are typically used when you want to clear an entire area of vegetation, such as preparing a garden bed or clearing a driveway of weeds.

  2. Crabgrass Preventers: Crabgrass is a common weed that can quickly overtake a lawn if left unchecked. Crabgrass preventers are typically applied in early spring to prevent crabgrass seeds from germinating. They form a barrier that inhibits the growth of crabgrass.

  3. Post-Emergent Herbicides: These products are used to control weeds that have already sprouted. They are applied directly to the leaves of the weeds and work by disrupting the weed's growth and metabolism.

  4. Pre-Emergent Herbicides: Pre-emergent herbicides are applied before weed seeds germinate. They create a barrier in the soil, preventing weed seeds from growing roots and establishing themselves.

  5. Organic and Natural Alternatives: Some individuals prefer to use organic or natural weed and crabgrass control methods. These can include manual weeding, mulching, and using vinegar or other natural solutions.

  6. Application Methods: Weed and crabgrass killers come in various forms, including liquid sprays, granules, and concentrated formulas. The choice of application method depends on the type of product and the specific needs of your lawn or garden.

  7. Safety Considerations: When using weed and crabgrass killers, it's essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully. Some products may require protective gear, and it's crucial to keep pets and children away from treated areas until the product has dried or settled.

  8. Environmental Impact: The choice of weed and crabgrass killers can have environmental consequences. Some herbicides can be harmful to beneficial insects, birds, and aquatic life. Consider using eco-friendly or less toxic alternatives if you are concerned about environmental impact.

Remember that the effectiveness of weed and crabgrass killers can vary depending on factors such as the type of weed, the timing of application, and environmental conditions. It's essential to choose the right product for your specific situation and follow proper application guidelines to achieve the best results in your lawn and garden care.

Question: will it damage shrubs and flowers
Answer: Keep the spray away from any type of ornamental flowers or Shrubs. It is made for lawn weed control only, not flower beds. You may try using preen granules around your flower beds. If you use colored mulch around those flowers and shrubs you will help control the weed population and enhance the beauty of the shrubs and flowers. Hope this helps. Steve
Question: how may square feet does the entire 40 ounces of the product treat
Answer: According to the manufacturers (Bayer's) directions 3.2 fl. oz. mixed in one gallon of water treats 500 sq. ft. - So your 40 fl. oz. divided by 3.2 equals 12.5, then times 500 gives you 6,250 sq.ft.Anthony
Question: does it contains quinclorac
Answer: yes Quinclorac 1.61%

User questions & answers

Question: It is ok to put Weed and Feed after putting this product but before 30 days are over. Says at the back to wait for 30 days before another application
Answer: You would want to wait the entire time before applying another product with fertilizer. If you have broadleaf weeds now, you can spot treat with Ortho Weed B Gon.
Question: I just applied Crabgrass preventer. How long must i wait to lay down seed to grow grass
Answer: In what I’ve read before, 6-8 weeks. At that point you should wait until fall, which is there ideal grass time in most climates. It gives the grass a chance to start growing on top, then winterize and grow strong roots so that spring will be awesome. About 3 years now I’ve been applying this strategy and find my grass is greener than all the neighbors. There is one neighbor who has a thicker lawn but he has a different slope in his yard and has been at it much longer. I will overtake him!
Question: How soon can I throw down some new seed? I would like more kentucky blue in my lawn
Answer: you have created a force field. only way is to put down new loam 1/2'' thick then seed . late august aerate lawn then seed,& do it like your feeding the chicken & those hens are hungry. next year you will not believe, keep your deck clean & blades sharp. GOOD LUCK
Question: Okay to use in August
Answer: I have Poa Annua and have been doing a lot of research on it. Many websites with information about Poa Annua say for effective control, besides Spring treatment it is good to put pre emergent down in August/September. Here is a quote from the Purdue University Extension website: "Poa annua is a winter annual that germinates in the late summer/early fall once soil temperatures fall below 70o F. Seedlings mature in the fall, overwinter in a vegetative state, and flower and produce seed in late spring and early summer." I just chatted with Scott's website and they said this product can be effective when used in this manner. I plan to apply it then AND next Spring. Most of the lawns in my development have been taken over by Poa Annua but I am still fighting the fight and hope to win or at least keep it to a minimum.

Product features

Get An Early Start This Spring

Protect your lawn all season long against listed weeds, including crabgrass, all while feeding for a fast green-up after winter.

When To Apply To Prevent Weeds

Apply in early spring to prevent the germination of crabgrass, chickweed, poa annua, and other common lawn weeds, before they start to spread. Apply before the 3rd or 4th mowing to protect all season long.

Tips For Lawn Care Success

First, regular feedings help your lawn look it’s best and provide the nutrients it needs to withstand the stress of weeds, weather and activity. Secondly, after you mow leave the grass clippings on the lawn. This allows grass to use water more effectively. Finally water, utilize nature’s sprinkler as much as possible. When you do have to water, do it between 6 and 10 am - less water is lost to evaporation and more reaches the roots.
