12 best lawn crabgrass

Lawn crabgrass is a common weed that can plague lawns and gardens. It's related to weed killers, weed and moss control, gardening, lawn care, and outdoor patio and garden maintenance. Here's what you need to know about lawn crabgrass:

  1. Identification: Crabgrass (genus Digitaria) is an annual weed that can quickly spread in lawns and gardens. It is easily identifiable by its low-growing, spreading habit, with stems that radiate from a central point, resembling crab legs. The leaves are generally light green to yellowish.

  2. Growth Habit: Crabgrass tends to thrive in areas with bare or thin grass coverage. It is particularly problematic in lawns with poor maintenance, as it can outcompete desirable grasses for nutrients and space.

  3. Seasonal Growth: Crabgrass typically emerges in the spring when soil temperatures reach around 55-60°F (13-16°C). It grows throughout the summer and can produce seeds, which contribute to its persistence in subsequent years.

  4. Weed Control: Crabgrass can be controlled through various methods, including hand-pulling, mowing, and the use of weed killers (herbicides). Pre-emergent herbicides are often applied in the early spring before crabgrass germination to prevent its growth. Post-emergent herbicides can be used to target existing crabgrass plants.

  5. Healthy Lawn Practices: A key strategy in preventing crabgrass is to maintain a healthy lawn. This includes regular mowing, adequate watering, and proper fertilization. A thick, healthy lawn can naturally suppress crabgrass growth by shading it out.

  6. Manual Removal: Small infestations of crabgrass can be removed manually by pulling the weeds, ensuring you get the entire root system to prevent regrowth.

  7. Mulching: Applying a layer of mulch to garden beds can help prevent crabgrass from taking root. Mulch acts as a barrier, reducing sunlight and preventing weed growth.

  8. Moss Control: While not directly related to crabgrass, moss control is another aspect of lawn care. Moss can thrive in areas with poor drainage and excess shade. Addressing these issues can help improve the overall health of your lawn and make it less hospitable for crabgrass and other weeds.

  9. Regular Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential in keeping crabgrass at bay. This includes aerating the lawn, overseeding to fill in bare spots, and ensuring proper soil health.

  10. Patio and Garden Care: Crabgrass can also encroach on patios and garden beds. Regular weeding, mulching, and the use of weed killers can help control its growth in these areas.

Managing and controlling crabgrass is a common concern for homeowners and garden enthusiasts. By implementing proper lawn care practices, using weed control methods, and maintaining a healthy lawn, you can minimize the presence of crabgrass and enjoy a lush, weed-free outdoor space.

User questions & answers

Question: It is ok to put Weed and Feed after putting this product but before 30 days are over. Says at the back to wait for 30 days before another application
Answer: You would want to wait the entire time before applying another product with fertilizer. If you have broadleaf weeds now, you can spot treat with Ortho Weed B Gon.
Question: I just applied Crabgrass preventer. How long must i wait to lay down seed to grow grass
Answer: In what I’ve read before, 6-8 weeks. At that point you should wait until fall, which is there ideal grass time in most climates. It gives the grass a chance to start growing on top, then winterize and grow strong roots so that spring will be awesome. About 3 years now I’ve been applying this strategy and find my grass is greener than all the neighbors. There is one neighbor who has a thicker lawn but he has a different slope in his yard and has been at it much longer. I will overtake him!
Question: How soon can I throw down some new seed? I would like more kentucky blue in my lawn
Answer: you have created a force field. only way is to put down new loam 1/2'' thick then seed . late august aerate lawn then seed,& do it like your feeding the chicken & those hens are hungry. next year you will not believe, keep your deck clean & blades sharp. GOOD LUCK
Question: Okay to use in August
Answer: I have Poa Annua and have been doing a lot of research on it. Many websites with information about Poa Annua say for effective control, besides Spring treatment it is good to put pre emergent down in August/September. Here is a quote from the Purdue University Extension website: "Poa annua is a winter annual that germinates in the late summer/early fall once soil temperatures fall below 70o F. Seedlings mature in the fall, overwinter in a vegetative state, and flower and produce seed in late spring and early summer." I just chatted with Scott's website and they said this product can be effective when used in this manner. I plan to apply it then AND next Spring. Most of the lawns in my development have been taken over by Poa Annua but I am still fighting the fight and hope to win or at least keep it to a minimum.

Get An Early Start This Spring

Protect your lawn all season long against listed weeds, including crabgrass, all while feeding for a fast green-up after winter.

When To Apply To Prevent Weeds

Apply in early spring to prevent the germination of crabgrass, chickweed, poa annua, and other common lawn weeds, before they start to spread. Apply before the 3rd or 4th mowing to protect all season long.

Tips For Lawn Care Success

First, regular feedings help your lawn look it’s best and provide the nutrients it needs to withstand the stress of weeds, weather and activity. Secondly, after you mow leave the grass clippings on the lawn. This allows grass to use water more effectively. Finally water, utilize nature’s sprinkler as much as possible. When you do have to water, do it between 6 and 10 am - less water is lost to evaporation and more reaches the roots.

If you use colored mulch around those flowers and shrubs you will help control the weed population and enhance the beauty of the shrubs and flowers. Hope this helps. Steve

Answer: According to the manufacturers (Bayer's) directions 3.2 fl. oz. mixed in one gallon of water treats 500 sq. ft. - So your 40 fl. oz. divided by 3.2 equals 12.5, then times 500 gives you 6,250 sq.ft.Anthony

Answer: I wouldn't necessarily use this in the Fall. September is a nice cool month to do some reseeding, and you can't put this down within 6 weeks of seeding the lawn. I tend to do a March application and a 2nd April application, leaving me a window to seed the lawn in June. Always remember, June and September are the 2 best months to seed your lawn. I also wouldn't put this down in the fall because crabgrass does not tend to germinate in the fall, it germinates in March and April.
Question: Is this effective against crabgrass
Answer: I used it for the first time this season. I couldn't see that it did anything although I understand that it should be used for 3 consecutive seasons to see significant results. I wasn't pleased with the size of the pellets (rabbit food size). It took several rain events for the product to dissolve. Maybe this is better but it just wasn't what I expected. In the spring I plan to use a chemical crabgrass preventer. I'm changing over to a zoysia lawn. Zoysia may go dormant and turn brown in the winter but it requires no watering and less mowing in summer. In a few seasons I won't need any fertilizer or weed killer (except for spot treatments).
Question: Can this be used in the garden as well as the lawn
Answer: Does this kill the grasses that produce those nasty "Foxtails"? I have animals, vegetable garden, etc. and need a better way to kill these weeds/grasses before they produce the foxtails. Trying to "weed-wacker" them down before they get the foxtails is not always possible for me due to health issues.
Question: Is this a good product to use on gravel walkways to avoid weed growth
Answer: Mike McGrath says: Spread even the finest quality corn gluten on established weeds like those walkway ones, however, and you'll simply be feeding them. Mulch, vinegar, flame, hoeing and/or hand pulling are the answer here-and in that large-scale, Master Gardener situation. Yes, you could prevent future weeds by dusting with corn gluten every six weeks, but it would be hugely expensive and you'd be wasting all that great nitrogen fertilizer if there weren't 'wanted' plants growing in that area. (See below.)

User questions & answers

Question: is this available in the 15000 sf bag
Answer: I am not certain about a large area. I use it for spot killing of weeds. The product works well on some weeds, but doesn't phase others. Hope this helps you. Cheryl
Question: Does this product prevent Bermuda grass seed from growing
Answer: No. You spray as is. Honestly, I couldn't get it to work. I ended up requesting a refund. Such a bummer.
Question: I live in Mass. It is April 17. Is it too late to apply this for this season? My grass is growing but i do not see any crabgrass yet
Answer: The amount per fluid ounce used varies based upon the variety of grass you are spraying per 1000 sq ft. Once you determine your grass type you mix the recommended Sedge Ender amount into a one gallon sprayer of water. You can see more in details on http://www.bonide.com/lbonide/backlabels/l069.pdf
Question: Is the active crabgrass preventer in this product Dithiopyr
Answer: Typically it is best to wait 2-3 days after application before mowing

User questions & answers

Question: does this product kill wild onions?, if not what does
Answer: There is no residual for GroundClear Weed and Grass Killer, so once the weeds have died you should be able to replant.
Question: Does this product gave any fertilizer in it? I recently applied weed and feed and had an unexpected thunderstorm wash it away and need an alternative
Answer: I couldn’t get it to kill anything
Question: will it kill quackgrass
Answer: as long as the grass is established, it should in no way affect it. if you lay down a barrier of pre-emergent and then sow grass seed, it would then prevent the grass from germinating properly, if at all.
Question: will it kill bind weed
Answer: What does the label say? For southern lawns (I live in Orlando, FL), during the summer months only, I use Celsius WG. Very expensive, but a little goes a long way. Mixes at 1 tsp per gallon of water at the standard rate. And this stuff really, really, really, works. It is the only thing I have found that will kill crab grass.
