13 best granular weed killers

Granular weed killers are a type of weed control product used in gardening, lawn care, and landscaping to manage and eliminate unwanted weeds and moss. These products come in granular form, which makes them easy to spread evenly over the targeted area. Here is some information about granular weed killers:

  1. Composition: Granular weed killers typically contain active ingredients designed to kill or inhibit the growth of weeds and moss. Common active ingredients include herbicides like glyphosate, 2,4-D, dicamba, and others, depending on the specific product and its intended use.

  2. Application: To use granular weed killers, you need to spread the granules evenly over the area where you want to control weeds or moss. This can be done using a spreader, shaker, or by hand. It's essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding the application rate and timing.

  3. Selectivity: Some granular weed killers are selective, meaning they target specific types of weeds while leaving desirable plants unharmed.Others may be non-selective and can kill most vegetation they come into contact with.

  4. Pre-emergent vs. Post-emergent: Granular weed killers can be categorized as pre-emergent or post-emergent. Pre-emergent weed killers are applied before weeds appear to prevent their growth, while post-emergent products are used to control existing weeds.

  5. Duration of Effectiveness: The effectiveness of granular weed killers can vary, and some products provide long-lasting weed control, while others may require reapplication as weeds continue to emerge.

  6. Safety Precautions: When using granular weed killers, it's crucial to take safety precautions. This may include wearing protective clothing, avoiding contact with the product, and keeping children and pets away from treated areas until it's safe.

  7. Environmental Considerations: Some granular weed killers are designed to be more environmentally friendly and have minimal impact on non-target plants and wildlife. Always read the product label for information on environmental and safety considerations.

  8. Brand Varieties: There are various brands and formulations of granular weed killers available on the market, each with its unique features and intended uses. It's essential to choose a product that suits your specific needs and the type of weeds you are trying to control.

Granular weed killers can be a useful tool in maintaining a weed-free and healthy garden, lawn, or landscape. However, it's essential to use them responsibly and according to the manufacturer's guidelines to ensure effective and safe weed control.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the expiration date of this product
Answer: Yes my bag was also expired and this stuff damaged my lawn and left the weeds. Would never purchase this product
Question: Does this work to get rid of Poa Annua
Answer: Use a Pre-Emergent in Late Summer The Poa annua seeds produced in the spring wait patiently in the soil for the cooler temperature of fall to arrive before they sprout. You can stop them from sprouting by applying a pre-emergent weed control product, like Scotts® WeedEx™ Prevent with Halts®, in early fall (August through early September). Follow up your pre-emergent weed control application with an application of Scotts® Turf Builder® WinterGuard® Fall Lawn Food to help your lawn recover from the stresses of summer and keep it thick and green.
Question: In central KY am I considered southern or northern for weed control
Answer: I also live in central Kentucky. Not so important for weed control but it is important for grass seed. Go with northern to be safe.
Question: How long after application before I can plant new seed
Answer: Normally it’s 3-4 weeks. Keep in mind, I always spread a thin layer of top soil later and throw down seeds and starter fertilizer. I do not throw seed directly on grass.

Prevent Weeds All Season Long

Barricade is The Andersons professional-grade pre-emergent weed control. Containing 0.48% of the active ingredient prodiamine, Barricade is one of the best and most cost-effective granular weed preventers on the market. It can be used on established lawns and landscape beds to prevent over 30 grass and broadleaf weeds like crabgrass, goosegrass, foxtail, lambsquarter, henbit and more.

Barricade features The Andersons patented Dispersible Granular (DG) Technology which allows each granule to disperse into thousands of micro particles after coming into contact with water. Because of DG Technology, Barricade can move past the thatch layer of your lawn and into the soil where it prevents the germination of weed seeds.

When To Apply Barricade - Spring and Fall

Barricade is a pre-emergent weed control, which means that is designed to prevent weeds. Application timing is critical to the product's performance.

To prevent summer annual weeds in both northern and southern turf types, apply Barricade in early spring prior to soil temperatures reaching 55 degrees Fahrenheit at a four inch depth. Applying at this time will prevent weed seeds from germinating.

In southern zones, Barricade can be reapplied in the fall to prevent annual winter weeds like poa annua, also known as bluegrass.

Remember, Barricade must receive irrigation or light rainfall of at least .05 inches for the herbicide prevention to activate.

Barricade and Seeding

In the same way that Barricade prevents the germination of weeds, it can also inhibit the germination of turf.

If you already seeded wait 60 days or until after the second mowing, whichever is longer, before you apply Barricade.

How long you should wait to seed or overseed after applying Barricade depends on your climate. Refer to the table below for recommended intervals.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I spray weed and feed directly in grass
Answer: Jerry, If I'm understanding your question. I would only use it attached to your hose pipe as the directions indicate and if so then yes you can spray it directly on your grass. Hope this helps.
Question: How often can i use this on my lawn
Answer: I use it once every 6-8 weeks, no weeds and green grass!
Question: Should this be applied after overnight temps are above freezing
Answer: You should wait till temps are above freezing and more importantly until dandelions etc. are coming up to spray, this is after all weed and feed. If you spray before emergence of dandelions you won't kill them.
Question: Can I spray weed and feed directly
Answer: This needs to be connected to a hose. They do not give an amount to dilute this, as if it were other concentrated sprays.

User questions & answers

Question: I'm using this on my mossy pathways to control weeds, esp. poa annua. will it harm ferns, blueberries, mugho? thx
Answer: No....the gate itself is the only structure that crosses the opening. So when you open it that is gone and you just walk like normal.
Question: How long do you need to wait before putting down grass seed
Answer: You need to lift and pull so no a dog nose would not open it
Question: How soon after you water it in after the 48 hours can you mow
Answer: Since it is installed with brackets on each side there isn’t a way to use 2 of them together. It works really well in an open doorway or for stairs as shown in the picture.
Question: What are the active ingredients
Answer: The correct answer is this is a 36 inch gate therefore it opens to 36 inches and when closed it is only 11.5" wide...... Very narrow when closed The other models are 60 inches open/15.5 inches closed.... 84 inches opened/21.5 inches closed and finally 108 inches opened (9FT!!!)/25.5 inches closed. Competitors 60 inch model has a closed width of 25.5 inches for comparison purposes The Keepsafe product has widest opening whilce maintaining the narrowest closure in the industry.......

User questions & answers

Question: Does it prevent crabgrass
Answer: Yes - this product is very effective in the prevention of crabgrass and other weeds as listed on the product label.
Question: Can this be used on Zoysia Grass
Answer: Yes this may be used in established Zoysia.
Question: What are the spreader settings for a scotts edge guard spreader
Answer: It varies depending on how much of a coat you want to apply. The pictures on the page show that the edge spreader can range from 4 to 7.5
Question: When should I put it down
Answer: In the late winter or early spring. Crabgrass and other annual weeds that you are trying to prevent often germinate after several days with soil temperatures (NOT air temperatures) being around 55 degrees. The microbes in the soil are what break down this pre-emergent and since microbes in the soil are fairly dormant in cold weather, that means you can put this down early, well before the soil reaches 55 degrees and the pre-emergent herbicide will still be active when the soil reaches the temperatures where annual weeds start to germinate. This does not kill the seeds, it stops root development as the seeds germinate so the weed/plant does not reach a stage where it will emerge from the soil and grow. Many lawn care professionals put down their pre-emergent herbicides when the soil temperatures are in the 35-45 degree range to prevent weeds. Oddly, I have yet to see anybody state an actual temperature for the soil as a guide to apply pre-emergence herbicides in he fall...? Keep in mind this will prevent plants from growing, so if you are planning on putting down new grass seed or overseeding to thicken growth in your lawn, this will also prevent desirable plants and grass from germinating as well.

User questions & answers

Question: Most "lawn fertilizers & broadleaf weed killers" will kill buffalo grass. Will Preen kill it also
Answer: Buffalo grass is not listed on the product label: https://www.preen.com/labels/2464145.pdf
Question: will this kill nutsedge
Answer: No. All the weeds it controls are listed here: https://www.preen.com/labels/2464145.pdf
Question: How long does it take for weeds to die
Answer: Takes about a week before you can see any noticeable results and unfortunately, you can see it doesn't have very many good reviews. That's because it's no better than Weed B Gon. When it comes to weeds, there are no foolproof weed killers out there that are meant for lawns. I know, I've tried them all. A lot of people have had good luck with 2-4-D amine weed killer, but some grasses are a little sensitive to it. I've had some good luck with it on Bermuda grass.
Question: How soon after use to plant grass seed

Question: Will it hurt my ground cover sedums
Answer: I sprinkle Preen over established plants and it hasn't hurt them. Preen prevents seeds from germinating, it does not kill the weeds already sprouted.
Question: Will Preen kill nettles
Answer: Preen keeps seeds from germinating. If nettle drop seeds then yes. If they are perennials and come up from existing roots then ‘no.’
Question: can you use it around pets
Answer: Yes, it is completely safe around pets. I put in the soil around shrubs in a flower bed and my back yard and my dog goes in and around those shrubs frequently.
Question: Are there any tips on using this? I used it once over 10 years ago and it killed my impatiens. I never used it again
Answer: I have used preen for many years and never sustained damage to mature plants. I use approximately 25 lbs annually. I begin before the temperatures warm. The last couple of weeks we received in excess of 15 inches of rain. Some of the areas that I applied preen, there was the beginning of weed shots. I re applied preen to those areas and lightly applied round up on the weeds. In closing, Preen has saved me hundreds of hours over the years.

Product features

Remove Existing Weeds

Remove any existing weeds, taking care to remove their roots. Preen garden products do not kill existing weeds, they prevent them.

Mulch the Area

A three-inch layer of mulch helps retain soil moisture, keeps soil temperature even and looks nice and tidy. Mulch also has preventative properties of its own, assisting Preen in keeping weeds away.

Apply Preen

Sprinkle Preen on top of mulch. Apply when the garden is dry so Preen granules won’t stick to wet plant leaves.

Water To Activate

After applying Preen, water the granules to release ingredient that forms an invisible barrier that blocks weeds beneath the surface.

Prevent Weeds Around Flowers, Vegetables, Trees & Shrubs

This Preen product can be used around over 200 established flowers, vegetables, trees and shrubs as listed on the product label (see special section for use on vegetables).

Apply Anytime Weeds are Growing

Preen works best when applied in spring after spreading mulch on your flower and shrub beds before weeds start growing. If you forget to apply in early spring - no problem - this product can be applied anytime weeds are growing.

Prevents Weeds* for up to 3 Months

This Preen product blocks common broadleaf garden weeds such as chickweed, knotweed, purslane, and thistle, as well as grassy garden weeds like crabgrass, foxtail, and bluegrass for up to 3 months. *See use directions for complete list of treated weeds

User questions & answers

Question: Is this a liquid or powder
Answer: It's a powder, the liquid one is not as strong.
Question: Since this product is a powder, can it be used in a battery power sprayer? Is it stronger than Roundup Pro
Answer: Roundup QuikPro can be used in a battery sprayer. Roundup Pro is glyphosate and a surfactant only. Roundup QuikPro works faster due to the Diquat but is not stronger or more effective on the majority of weeds. If speed in killing is your primary interest go with QuikPro. If you can wait up to as much as 10-14 days before the weeds are controlled Roundup Pro Concentrate may well be your better option. For more information contact me at 828-707-5183. Thanks for considering your purchase via AgCare Direct and AgCareProducts through Amazon.
Question: does this have an expiration date for effectiveness
Answer: The dates you see on the Round Up Quick Pro packets are the Release date or date they were made. The shelf life if kept in a cool dry area is 3-7 years. All product you purchase from AgCare Products will have a recent manufacture date. Thanks for considering your purchase on Amazon through AgCareDirect and Ag Care Products.
Question: I have weeds growing between the pavers on my back deck. Is this suitable for that or is this more for broad range use
Answer: Hi Brian!Roundup QuikPro will only kill the weeds that are currently growing in your deck area; anything that has 'green' showing will be terminated; however, QuikPro will not prevent more weeds from growing; there are other products that sterilize the soil and prevent seeds from germinating which would be better to use once you've gotten rid of the current weed population!
