13 best crabgrass killers
Crabgrass killers are herbicides specifically designed to control and eliminate crabgrass, a common and invasive weed that can quickly take over lawns and gardens. Crabgrass (Digitaria) is an annual grass weed that germinates in the spring and thrives in warm weather. It's known for its rapid growth, spreading through seeds and forming dense patches in lawns.
There are two main types of crabgrass killers: pre-emergent and post-emergent.
Pre-emergent Crabgrass Killers:
- These are applied before crabgrass seeds germinate, forming a barrier that prevents the weed from sprouting.
- Typically applied in early spring before soil temperatures rise and crabgrass seeds begin to germinate.
- Effective for preventing crabgrass infestations before they start.
Post-emergent Crabgrass Killers:
- These are applied after crabgrass has already emerged from the soil.
- They work by killing the existing crabgrass plants.
- Typically used in late spring or early summer when crabgrass is actively growing.
Tips for Using Crabgrass Killers:
- Follow the product's instructions carefully, as misuse can harm your lawn or other plants.
- Apply when the weather is calm to prevent drift of the herbicide.
- Water the lawn after application if required by the product instructions.
- Consider using a selective herbicide that targets crabgrass without harming desirable grass species.
Other Weed Control Measures:
- Healthy Lawn Practices: Maintaining a healthy lawn through proper watering, mowing, and fertilization can help prevent weed growth, including crabgrass.
- Mulching: Applying a layer of mulch around plants and in garden beds can suppress weed growth.
- Manual Removal: Hand-pulling crabgrass is an option, especially for smaller infestations.
Popular Crabgrass Killer Brands:
- Scotts Halts Crabgrass & Grassy Weed Preventer: A pre-emergent herbicide.
- Ortho Weed B Gon Weed Killer: A post-emergent herbicide effective against crabgrass.
Always read and follow the instructions on the product label, and consider your specific lawn conditions and the type of grass you have before selecting a crabgrass killer. If you have concerns or questions, it's advisable to consult with a local gardening expert or your extension service for personalized advice.

Question: | will it damage shrubs and flowers |
Answer: | Keep the spray away from any type of ornamental flowers or Shrubs. It is made for lawn weed control only, not flower beds. You may try using preen granules around your flower beds. If you use colored mulch around those flowers and shrubs you will help control the weed population and enhance the beauty of the shrubs and flowers. Hope this helps. Steve |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will it kill Johnson grass and Dallas grass |
Answer: | It will not kill Dallis grass |
Question: | We have a 2600 sqft lawn and a 4 gallon backpack commercial sprayer. How much drive, water and surfactant should we add to the sprayer |
Answer: | I bought 1/2 gallon of XLR8 for probably 10,000 sf of lawn. I used 2 ounces per gallon + 1 teaspoon or so of surfactant on actively growing crabgrass in a bermuda and fescue central Arkansas lawn this summer. I spot treated the crabgrass, which had taken over probably 25% of the lawn and small patches of it in throughout. I've hit newly sprouted crabgrass or areas that I missed or that survived several times a couple weeks apart, and almost all of the crabgrass is dead. I still have more than 1/2 left. I don't think you would need to spray more than 1/4 of your tank at a time for 2600 sf, I would think 1/2 gallon would last you several years. |
Question: | What is the shelf life of this product |
Answer: | 3 years |
Question: | What is the mixing ratio for the 1/2 gallon and how big area it will cover, and how many times do have to apply. Thank you |
Answer: | Correction to my previous answer to your question: I mix 3oz Drive in 2+ gallons water and apply to 2000+ square feet, not 1000 as stated. This approximates the recommended (maximum) application rate for Bermudagrass of 1.45oz/1000 sqft. Another suggestion is to use 1oz per generous gallon of water per 1000sqft so you could use 3 applications (3oz per year per 1000sqft) and not exceed the manufacturer's limit of 2.9oz per 1000 sqft per year. |

Barricade DG Pro is one of the best and most cost effective granular weed preventer herbicides on the market. It is labeled to help prevent over 30 grass and broadleaf weeds in established turf grasses, lawns, landscapes, and ornamental beds.
User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used on centipede grass |
Answer: | as long as the grass is established, it should in no way affect it. if you lay down a barrier of pre-emergent and then sow grass seed, it would then prevent the grass from germinating properly, if at all. |
Question: | This prevent creeping bent grass |
Answer: | What does the label say? For southern lawns (I live in Orlando, FL), during the summer months only, I use Celsius WG. Very expensive, but a little goes a long way. Mixes at 1 tsp per gallon of water at the standard rate. And this stuff really, really, really, works. It is the only thing I have found that will kill crab grass. |
Question: | What is the size |
Answer: | 50 lbs. Demensions are the same as other 50 lb. granular bags. |
Question: | Where can I find the Scotts Spreader settings for this product |
Answer: | Contact Scotts directly. Otherwise, you may have to conduct several applications to determine the appropriate setting for your lawn square footage. Applying granular anything to your lawn requires some adjustments. Fortunately, unlike chemical fertilizers, the application rate of pre-emergent fertilizers like Barricade permit a reasonable margin of error. |

Question: | How long after treating should I wait before allowing my dog back on the lawn |
Answer: | I believe the bottle has instructions related to re-entry; I recall it was when the grass is dry. |
Question: | how long I have to for application after I water my lawn |
Answer: | You can apply it an hour AFTER you water your lawn . The important step is to not water your lawn for 48hrs after you apply the crabgrass killer. |
Question: | How do you know when all the chemical inside the ready to spray can is used up |
Answer: | You’ll see the slight difference in the color and the bottle will become lighter in weight because the chemical will be used up. I have spots that I give a second spray after the first spray, about a week to 10 days apart. You don’t have to use it all up in one application. |

Tenacity herbicide can be used for pre- and post-emergence control of more than 46 broadleaf weed and grass species. Its active ingredient, mesotrione, is based on a naturally occurring compound produced by the bottlebrush plant (Callistemon citrinus) that inhibits photosynthesis in susceptible plant species. It is absorbed by plants through the roots, shoots and leaves and distributed throughout the plant by both xylem and phloem translocation. KEY FEATURES Weeds controlled include crabgrass, ground ivy, yellow foxtail, yellow nutsedge and nimblewill. It also controls unwanted bentgrass. Provides post-emergent control of tough-to-control weeds Controls weeds at seeding reducing weed competition KEY BENEFITS Prevents and controls crabgrass pre or post up to four tillers Eliminates weeds at seeding so new grass can flourish.
- Tenacity is a systemic pre-emergence and post-emergence herbicide for the selective contact and residual control of weeds in turfgrasses.
- When applied as a pre-emergent, weeds absorb Tenacity during emergence from the soil.
- Target pests: Barnyardgrass, Carpetweed, Chickweed, Clover, Crabgrass (large & smooth), Dandelion, Foxtail, Goosegrass, Henbit, Yellow Nutsedge, Purslane, Thistle, Wild Carrot and others
- Active Ingredient: Mesotrione 40%

User questions & answers
Question: | How much lawn will this 8oz bottle cover? We have .3 of an acre |
Answer: | The 8 oz bottle will produce 96 gallons of solution using 1/2 teaspoon per gallon of water. I forget what the coverage is but it will certainly cover .3 acres using a pump sprayer.I have been using mine on my .5 acre for two years and I have only used about 1/3 of the 8 oz. |
Question: | Anyone know how tenacity compares to a product called "dismiss"? i have some nutsedge to get rid of and i'm trying to decide which to get. thanks |
Answer: | tenacity is labeled for nutsedge. . Dismiss is the the better choice, however. Usually with tenacity, you have to apply it at least two to three times, at two week intervals. They are both broad spectrum. Tenaciity's claim to fame is its ability to kill grassy weeds, like Nimblewill. They are both labeled for Goose grass. I don't think Dismiss is labeled for Nimblewill. PS: spectricide makes a good 4 way for the home owner. It has 24d, dicamba, quinchlorac, and sulfantrazone (dismiss). spelling. they sell it on amazon and lowes. |
Question: | can i apply over |
Answer: | The official answer is no for most herbicides. Depending on what you're trying to control. Here is a link to one of the best reports I have found - http://archive.lib.msu.edu/tic/golfd/article/2012oct33.pdf. This report shows great results with mid-80 degree temperatures in the control of POA ANA (Which is what I'm challenged with controlling). The general rule of thumb with Tenacity is the higher the temperatures the more applications (small dosage) needed for control. Tenacity has a half-life of 5-15 days depending on the temperatures - the higher temperatures the lower the half-life. The report and other reading also indicates that Tenacity needs to stay in the plant at or above the half life levels for ~ about 14 days or so to gain a high level of control. My advice would be to look for a week when temperatures are expected to average below 90 degrees and make a couple applications during that week and observe the control that you achieve - then goo from there. I experimented for a couple seasons using this report to get a feel for the best application frequency, rates, temperatures and timing (time of year). I hope this is helpful. Good luck and all the best. |
Question: | what is surfactant? Is it included with tenacity |
Answer: | A surfactant is a separate product that you add to your applicator tank. It helps the Tenacity stick to leaf blades and better kill the weeds. I used Bonide Turbo spreader sticker. It, or something similar is available in small bottles in garden centers. The ratio I used for nimblewil was 1 teaspoon of Tenacity and four teaspoons of surfactant per 1 gallon of Water. |

Step 1:
Shake container well before using. Connect a garden hose to the sprayer nozzle. Make sure switch is fully forward in the "off" position.
Step 2:
Turn on water at faucet. Extend hose to the farthest area to be treated and work back toward the faucet so you don't come in contact with the treated area. Remove safety tab from sprayer’s right side by pulling straight out. Discard or keep for future re-use.

Question: | Will this get rid of quackgrass |
Answer: | yes |
Question: | How much do I use for crabgrass |
Answer: | This stuff contains Quinclorac which is the same stuff we used commercially with good results. The thing about crabgrass, (or any undesirable grasses), is they take a long time to kill. You can up the dosage but take the risk of killing the good grass as well. When Crabgrass starts to die, it first turns colors or red, purple or orange. It will not disappear completely like dandelions or any broadleaf. However it will not come back the next year. That said, this Quinclorac does not prevent any new seeds from sprouting which is what you might have had. Crabgrass puts out a tremendous amount of seeds each year if not killed early enough. (They only spread by seeds and all of it dies at the first frost. ) The key is to hit it hard and often early when it first sprouts before it goes to seed. Any weed seeds can last up to 5 years in the soil before they germinate depending on the soil moisture and temperature. This is why you may see new weeds when you disturb the soil in any way. A lush thick lawn will keep the soil temps down and many seeds will rot before germinating. This is why crabgrass and other weeds tend to sprout next to driveways, etc. because the temps are higher. A neglected, (problem) lawn can take 3-4 years of constant attention to become weed free. Your first application in the spring should be a strong fert with pre-emergent. This will kill off any seeds, (including grass seeds), that try to germinate. Pre-emergent lasts about 90 days. As the temps get hotter, back off on the fert, (unless you water in between the raindrops), and spot treat weeds as needed. No need to weed control the whole lawn as this is a waste. In the fall as temps drop and rain comes back, step up the fert and weed killer again. If you plan to spread new seed wait until fall. The temps are lower, there is usually more rain, the pre-emergent is done, and traffic on the lawn is mostly done. When reseeding, stay off the lawn as much as possible. No foot traffic, dogs, or weed control. I always told my customers to seed an area that they could cover with a few sprinklers and an automatic timer. Otherwise the seed won't take. Also, stay off the lawn when there is frost on it as you can kill the grass. Unfortunately, a very lush, thick lawn is fairly expensive as it can require a lot of water and or chemicals. A full sun lawn requires much more water than a shaded lawn, but recovers from damage quicker. The best lawns I have seen had an underground sprinkler system and had a good, timed lawn care service. Once we got the weeds under control in such a lawn, they required little, if any, weed killer. |
