Answer:	You can separate the halves with your hands. They are friction fit together but not under any significant pressure. I use them for my two Z axis screws on my 3D printer (motors at bottom) which are always under pressure from the X carriage and they have never separated after 1000+/- prints.

Answer:	Local codes apply in all cases first before you attempt any advise. If you need length on a one way drain from a washing machine or sink try a check valve that can be easily inspected if it clogs with pipe sludge. Otherwise, get 2 couplings and cut in a section of common pipe and score the inside edges of pipe at an angle to prevent hair and the such collecting in the extended section. YouTube is a great help for a visual on this.
