14 best gardening soils
Gardening soils play a crucial role in the success of a garden. The right soil provides essential nutrients, proper drainage, and a suitable environment for plants to grow and thrive. Here's what you need to know about gardening soils:
Garden Soil Types:
- Topsoil: Topsoil is the uppermost layer of soil and contains a mix of organic matter, minerals, and nutrients. It's typically used to improve existing soil or create new garden beds.
- Potting Soil: Potting soil, also known as potting mix, is specially formulated for container gardening. It provides excellent drainage and aeration, crucial for potted plants.
- Garden Bed Soil: Garden bed soil is a blend of topsoil and organic matter like compost or peat moss. It's designed for in-ground planting and helps improve soil structure and fertility.
- Raised Bed Mix: This type of soil is specifically created for raised garden beds. It typically contains a balanced mix of soil, compost, and other organic materials.
Soil Amendments and Fertilizers:
- Compost: Compost is decomposed organic matter that adds nutrients and improves soil structure. It enhances water retention and provides a slow-release source of nutrients.
- Mulch: Mulch is applied to the soil surface to help retain moisture, control weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Common mulch materials include wood chips, straw, and shredded leaves.
- Fertilizers: Fertilizers are used to supplement soil nutrients, particularly nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK). They come in various forms, including granular, liquid, and organic options.
- pH Adjusters: Some soils may have pH levels that are too acidic or alkaline for certain plants. pH adjusters like lime or sulfur can help balance the soil's pH.
Soil Testing:
- It's essential to test your garden soil periodically to determine its pH and nutrient levels. Soil testing kits are readily available and provide valuable information to guide your soil amendment and fertilization decisions.
Soil Preparation:
- Proper soil preparation involves loosening the soil, removing weeds and debris, and adding necessary amendments to create an optimal growing environment for plants.
Gardening Lawn Care:
- For lawns, soil is a critical factor. Soil compaction can inhibit grass growth, so aeration may be needed. Additionally, specific grass types may require different soil conditions.
Patio Lawn Garden Supplies:
- In the context of gardening soils, it's important to have the right tools and equipment, such as shovels, wheelbarrows, and gloves, to work with soil effectively.
Understanding your soil type, amending it as needed, and providing proper care are fundamental steps to achieving healthy and thriving plants in your garden. Gardening soils should be chosen and treated based on the specific needs of the plants you intend to grow.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the approximate weight (g) of each puck |
Answer: | I bought the big box that grew to a wheelbarrow and it was very light. |
Question: | would this product be suitable for growing succulents |
Answer: | Succulents seem to grow in just about anything and do not need a lot of moisture once they have rooted. Coir by contrast is very good at retaining moisture as well as, shall I say, accepting moisture, i.e. it does not repel water when it is completely dry like other products do. Hence it is excellent for germinating seeds. |
Question: | This can be used in place of regular potting soil |
Answer: | I use it in lieu of potting soil in small window sill pots. It expands to 3 or 4 times its original size when watered, so you need to keep that in mind. |
Question: | I’m a science teacher and looking for a soil that’ll sustain earthworms for a couple of weeks. Do you think that they could be healthy in it |
Answer: | You will need to add nutrients for the earthworms for be happy... compost would be a much better choice. This product was fantastic for my needs... light and small but with water became a big pile (wheelbarrow full, I guess) but I was just adding it to the top of a flower bed and then I added nutrients for the plants... I don’t believe this soil has any nutritional value for earth worms at all... if you need a huge pile, it might work if you add a little compost and then some quickly biodegrading items like bananas so the worms would grow quickly and multiply. That would be great for the students. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this help lawn |
Answer: | Pomegranate plants or trees can use this fertilizer, since their needs are similar, but I read that a 8-8-8 formula would be better formulation. This fertilizer ,Miracle Grow Shake'n'feed for citrus is 13-7-13. |
Question: | Is there any shelf-life? How long can it stay "good" without use? I plan to use around my tree seedlings and some grown trees and shrubs |
Answer: | I am a science teacher and have grown many Avocados from a pit, and have only used this product. Many of my trees are 1-4 years old and doing better than expected. |
Question: | What is the N-P-K rating |
Answer: | The NPK is 8-2-12 |
Question: | I hear something wiggling inside the bag. I live in an apartment; if there are worm in the bag I want nothing to do with them. What should I do |
Answer: | A 12-4-8 NPK ratio is not a good formula for tomato fruit production. It's OK to give it this when the plant is small, but you will not get a good tomato crop if you continue with this ratio. Fruit production requires more phosphorus than this fertilizer can provide. I always have excellent fruit production with 10-10-10. |

Wiggle Worm Soil Builder
Soon to be known as the 'World's Greatest Organic Fertilizer'.
PURE earthworm castings are surely Mother Nature's best kept growing secret. You need only use a small amount in or around your houseplants, vegetables and flowers. The miracles of the earthworm are easily seen in the beautiful growth and yields of your plants.
Seeing is believing! Try some today and join the fast growing ranks of Wiggle Worm Soil Builder believers. You'll be very happy you did.
What are Pure Earthworm Castings?
Wiggle Worm Soil Builder Pure Earthworm Castings Organic Fertilizer is an all purpose natural fertilizer that comes to you straight from nature with no alterations whatsoever. Our nightcrawlers are fed a very rich organic material which contains a wide variety of minerals and trace elements. The earthworms digest this material and in its' passage through the worm, it is beneficially altered both chemically and physically. The end product is 'super humus' an extremely fertile organic fertilizer properly conditioned for best root growth, containing in rich proportion and water soluble form, all the elements required of the earth for optimum plant nutrition.
Pure Earthworm castings, as stated, contain rich proportions of water soluble nutrients. This is a primary reason for being able to provide incredible results. Wiggle Worm Soil Builder allows plants to quickly and easily absorb all essential nutrients and trace elements. This is possible because the worm grinds and uniformly mixes the nutrients and trace elements in simple forms, so plants need only minimal effort to obtain them. This is not the case with most other natural fertilizers. Though they may have many nutrients and/or higher analyses, the ability of plants to optimally use them is limited because they are not broken down to the degree in which the earthworm is able to provide them.
As well as an abundance of available nutrients, Wiggle Worm Soil Builder Pure Earthworm Castings also provide a perfect mix of nutrients that are not readily available, but present for long term nutritional needs. This allows plants to feed as needed for weeks and months at a time, depending on the plant.
Chemical fertilizers usually provide only available synthetic nutrients, much of which are quickly lost into the soil with watering, as a plants' root system can only absorb so much. Chemical fertilizers are most often detrimental to soil microbiology, by-passing and often destroying much of its beneficial microbial and bacterial activity. At the same time, many of these synthetic nutrients are absorbed into your plants and food. Chemical fertilizers and pesticides used in both farms and gardens have become our country's leading cause of water pollution.
Another point in favor of Wiggle Worm Soil Builder Pure Earthworm Castings is the high concentration of beneficial bacteria and microbes added to them by the earthworm in the digestive process. These microscopic creatures help different elements of the soil work in conjunction with each other to create healthy, working soil that provides the best possible atmosphere for optimum growth.
Yet another benefit of Wiggle Worm Soil Builder Pure Earthworm Castings is their ability to improve soil structure. These miniature football shaped particles improve aeration of the soil as they don't pack together. This allows roots the ability to grow fast and fibrous which promotes rapid plant growth. It also allows for excellent drainage in soil so roots don't become waterlogged or develop root rot. While improving aeration, Wiggle Worm Soil Builder Pure Earthworm Castings also increases the soil's water retention capacity as they contain absorbent organic matter that holds only the necessary amounts of water needed by the roots, while their shape allows unnecessary water to easily drain.
The simple fact is that Earthworm Castings were created by nature for the purpose of promoting optimum plant growth and everything required to provide it, is found in them. When you concentrate this odorless, non-burning miracle of nature in greater concentrations than usually found in nature, the results are truly spectacular. This is why we offer a money-back guarantee. Demand PURE worm castings. Demand The Best Wiggle Worm Soil Builder earthworm castings.

Question: | Has it been ph buffered |
Answer: | We are growing cucumbers in it, and our plants are covered in yellow flowers. We planted very late and we unfortunately don’t get enough sun in that area. So far we have just two small cucumbers, but I can’t blame the soil. I recommend using fertilizer when you water. |

One 3 lb. bag will nourish one 4' x 4' raised bed for up to 2 months, be sure to use the entire bag. Just like us, plants get hungry. Make sure you feed them again 8 weeks later! Add 1/4 cup of the good stuff per 1 square foot of raised bed area (1/2 of the bag is 4 cups and will feed a 4' x 4' raised bed). Evenly sprinkle onto the soil and work into the top 1-2 inches of soil. Don't forget to give your plants a big drink of water after feeding them!
When Using Nature's Care Organic Raised Bed Soil to Make Your Bed:
Our soil is great and does wonders for your plants, but like us, plants need more food once they start getting bigger. Use Nature's Care Organic & Natural Raised Bed Plant Food 4 weeks after planting to keep your plants happy and loving life. Simply add 1/4 cup of the good stuff per 1 square foot of raised bed area (1/2 of the bag is 4 cups and will feed a 4' x 4' bed) and lightly work into top 1-2 inches of the soil. User questions & answers
Question: | I'd like to use this for planting tomato and herbs in containers. Do I need to add anything to it? or just use this soil? This is first time plantin |
Answer: | For tomatoes and herbs, you're pretty much good to go with this soil. If you want, you could add a tiny bit of perlite for drainage but this soil is very good as is. Good luck with your harvesting! |
Question: | I have noticed that Miracle-Gro potting soil often has fungus gnats. Has anyone had the same problem with this potting soil |
Answer: | Miracle Grow does have fungus gnats. Especially the nature's cure brand. I've used the Black gold organic potting soil a few times, indoor and outdoor, and have never seen a fungus gnat anywhere. Plus it's more like real dirt rather then the soft and unpredictable coco coir base. Besides grow is a subsidiary company of Monsanto. Monsanto is probably the largest GMO producing company in the world. I wouldn't trust miracle grow organic or not. |
Question: | Is there supposed to be white things all through out the soil |
Answer: | The white things are small pieces of perlite. It keeps the soil loose and helps it stay aerated. Most potting soils will have this. |
Question: | I've had problems with miracle grow and bug infestations. Has anyone had a problem with bugs and this soil |
Answer: | I also had bug problems with miracle grow soil. I bought this product for someone else so I can't say but I didn't get any complaints. I did buy those microscopic worms on amazon and it killed all the bugs. I have bought many different soils and no bug problems |

Improving Soil Quality for Happier Plants
Any garden or planter is only as successful as its soil – the 'home' plants depend on for nourishment and protection. To give your plants the best possible growing conditions while warding off weeds and pests, you need to give their soil a little care and attention. Buying commercial topsoil does not mean that it will contain everything your plants need. Soil should be light and crumbly, giving roots the chance to expand freely. If it’s too dense, add peat moss to lighten it. You also need to ensure soil has the proper nutrients, so treat it with an organic fertilizer and add compost you can make yourself in your garden. Over time, soil will need to be replenished with 'green manure' (the remains of fast-growing plants) and rock phosphate, as well as – of course – ongoing TLC. Your efforts will be swiftly rewarded as your plants grow, thrive, and blossom.

Question: | Does this contain additives |
Answer: | First off this is worm pooh, so you dont want to feed worms there own pooh, this stuff is gardening soil fertilizer. If you trying to raise worms, you want dirt, woodchips/chainsaw shaving and outmeal, and look for a worm tank for best results. If you want good worms to start with go to a local bait store if there is any in your area and get a couple of dozen of them. any produce scraps, as well as fresh cut grass can be thrown in the dirt to feed your worms. Hope this helps since no one is actually telling you the right way to raise worms. |
Question: | Do you have to add any nutrients or is it just add water from seed to harvest |
