12 best dressing composts
"Dressing compost" refers to the practice of adding a layer of compost to the topsoil of a garden or planting area. This gardening technique has several benefits and is related to garden soil, soil improvement, and overall garden health. Here's what you need to know about dressing composts:
Soil Enrichment: Dressing compost is primarily used to enrich garden soil. Compost is rich in organic matter, nutrients, and beneficial microorganisms. When you spread a layer of compost on top of your garden soil, it helps improve soil structure and fertility.
Nutrient Boost: Compost contains essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, along with micronutrients. These nutrients are slowly released into the soil as the compost breaks down, providing a consistent source of nutrition for plants.
Enhanced Soil Structure: Compost can improve soil texture by increasing its water-holding capacity and drainage. It helps sandy soils retain moisture and makes clayey soils more friable, promoting better root growth.
Microbial Activity: Compost is teeming with beneficial microorganisms like bacteria and fungi. Adding compost as a dressing encourages a healthy soil microbiome, which aids in nutrient cycling and disease suppression.
Weed Suppression: A layer of compost can act as a natural mulch, helping to suppress weed growth by blocking sunlight and preventing weed seeds from germinating.
Temperature Regulation: Compost can help regulate soil temperatures by insulating the soil. This can be particularly beneficial for protecting plant roots from extreme heat or cold.
pH Adjustment: Compost has a neutral pH, so adding it to acidic or alkaline soils can help bring the pH closer to the ideal range for most plants, which is slightly acidic to neutral.
Application Method: To dress compost, spread a layer, usually about 1-2 inches thick, evenly over the garden soil surface. Be mindful not to bury existing plants or create mounds around their bases. It's best to apply compost in the spring or fall when the soil is not frozen or waterlogged.
Frequency: Dressing compost can be done annually as part of your garden maintenance routine. However, some gardeners prefer to do it more often, especially in areas with poor or depleted soils.
Quality of Compost: The quality of the compost you use matters. Well-aged, fully decomposed compost is preferable to fresh, unprocessed organic matter. Quality compost should be dark, crumbly, and have a pleasant earthy smell.
Homemade vs. Commercial Compost: You can make your own compost using kitchen scraps, yard waste, and other organic materials, or you can purchase commercial compost from a garden center. Both can be effective for dressing compost.
Dressing compost is a valuable practice for maintaining healthy and productive garden soil. It helps improve soil structure, provides essential nutrients to plants, and contributes to overall garden vitality, making it an essential aspect of successful gardening and plant care.

Question: | How long before these bags start to decompose while in use in the kitchen |
Answer: | We live in florida and have been using these bags for both large trash can fir recyclables and smaller kitchen size can for food and other waste products wr cant recycle. They hold up very well for both. |
Question: | Why aren't these suitabl for backyard composting. I bought some then saw the fine print that they can't be used for that |
Answer: | It fits over the lid of a 5 gallon bucket. I use mine along with a toilet seat that fits on the bucket. I keep my spare bags, etc in the bottom of the bucket to support the bag bottom. The bags aren't super long and I don't want them pulling off the rim while being filled. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How many cubic feet of peat moss should I use as topdressing over 2100 sq ft lawn with this spreader |
Answer: | It is very dependent on how thick a layer you intend to put down. About 4-5 of the large bags of peat moss you would find at Home Depot or Lowes (I think they are 3.8 cu ft compressed) is what I would buy for an area that size. According to the peat moss manufacturer, you should apply 1/4 - 1/2 inch over existing lawn. That calculation gets you 45-85 cubic ft. for your area, which seems like a lot for top dressing. I hope my math is right! But 4-5 bags is definitely correct! Feel free to reach out (phone number on our website) if you have any questions or need help. |
Question: | Why is this so expensive since it can be assembled using low tech means using a few pounds of commonly available metal |
Answer: | It is pricy, but I didn't feel like making it from scratch |
Question: | Why is this |
Answer: | It is a rip-off. Write to the manufacturer. |
Question: | Could i use this to screen topsoil while applying it over new grass seed |
Answer: | Yes. I used it to apply compost to my entire yard. Sticks, etc. was left over. |

Stonington Blend Organic Plant Food Ingredients List:
Our Stonington Blend Organic Plant Food is much more than food for your plants. It is also a biostimulant. Biostimulants act on the plant through different pathways to improve crop vigor, yields, quality and post-harvest shelf life/conservation.
We use the following ingredients to make our Stonington Blend Organic Plant Food a diverse and powerful biostimulant.
- Lobster Meal - Lobster meal is rich in amino acids, calcium and chitin which help with cell wall development, stem strength and disease resistance. High in nitrogen, it also helps promote healthy green foliage.
- Kelp Meal - The kelp absorbs nutrients from the ocean and contains 60 or more minerals and trace elements not found in traditional fertilizers. It also contains natural compounds that increase environmental stress tolerance and enhance root growth.
- Fish Bone Meal - High in phosphorous, fish bone meal initiates strong root growth and budding and flowering. The amino acids in the fish bone meal improve the micro flora of the soil thereby facilitating the absorption of nutrients. This in turn increases the growth and vitality of the plant and helps to build and support the plant’s natural immune system.
- Alfalfa Meal - Microorganisms in the soil love alfalfa because of the protein, amino acids, fiber and sugars it contains. Because it is plant-based, it is easily broken down for a quick source of vitamins, and minerals. Alfalfa stimulates plant growth, helps flowering plants bloom faster and longer during the season, and provides drought resistance.
- Feather Meal - A slow-release nitrogen source that when blended into the soil decomposes to make the nitrogenous compounds available to the plants.
- Worm Castings - A slow release organic fertilizer made by earthworms. Castings contain enzymes and other metabolites that assist in increasing the microbial activity in the soil.
- Perlite - The porous surface of perlite provides room for air and water, boosting root aeration which allows for healthy root development.
- Potassium - Potassium sulfate also works as a slow release fertilizer. It has a low salt index, and is the preferred source of potassium in all-natural fertilizers.
- Epsom Salts - Epsom salts are water-soluble and are particularly beneficial to magnesium-hungry crops, such as potatoes, roses, tomatoes, lemon trees and peppers.
Coast of Maine's granulation process ensures you'll get a uniform consistent 5-2-4 NPK nutrient application in every tablespoonful.
When we make Stonington Organic Plant Food, the ingredients are blended together before being extruded and minced into their uniform size. Any pieces that fall under, or over our strict guidelines get recycled back into the next batch, until all the fertilizer is the same size – which means that you can expect the same result from the first scoop as from the last.
How to Use - Planting New Containers
For preparing and planting in new containers, (indoors or out): Fill the container with a premium potting soil or professional growing mix. We recommend Coast of Maine's Stonington Blend Grower's Mix for best results. Then, incorporate 1 teaspoon per 6" diameter of container, or 1 tablespoon per square foot of soil.
How to Use - Feeding Existing Containers
For feeding plants in existing containers, (indoors or out): First water the plant thoroughly , allowing the water to be absorbed prior to feeding. Then work the plant food and a little compost carefully into the soil around your plants. Again, 1 teaspoon per 6" diameter of container, or 1 tablespoon per square foot of soil.
How to Use - Planting New Garden Beds
For preparing new outdoor beds and gardens: Mix 1 pound (3 cups) of plant food per 1 cubic foot bag of compost. We recommend Coast of Maine's Quoddy Blend, Lobster Compost. Apply at a rate of 1 cubic foot of compost per 5 square feet of garden in either the early spring or late fall. Work into the soil to a depth of 3 inches and water thoroughly.
How to Use - Feeding Existing Garden Beds
For feeding established beds and gardens: Combine 1 pound (3 cups) of plant food per 1 cubic foot bag of compost. We recommend Coast of Maine's Quoddy Blend, Lobster Compost. Apply at a rate of 1 cubic foot of compost per 10 square feet of garden as early in the season as possible after the last freeze. If your soil has already been amended with compost, just apply plant food at the same rate of 1 pound per 10 square feet of garden, again as early in the season as possible. Apply again in mid-season if needed

Is this genuine Wiggle Worm product in an actual Wiggle Worm bag?
Yes.
The product you receive will be exactly as is shown in the picture. These are genuine
Wiggle Worm castings, manufactured according to Unco's strict quality control standards.
We order in volume & keep large amounts in-stock so we can ship to you quickly.
Do they smell?
No, Wiggle Worm castings are naturally odor free.
How many cubic feet are in 30 lbs of Wiggle Worm Castings?
Short answer: about one cubic foot
Long answer: Some soil amendments are sold by the pound and others are sold by
volume (i.e. cubic feet or quarts). This can make it tricky to know what you are getting.
Moisture levels, compaction, and other variables can vary, which affects the density of the
product. This makes it difficult to convert between weight and volume as two different bags
of product with the same volume could have slightly different weights or vice-versa. We sell by
weight so that it is easy to validate that you are getting what you pay for. However if you need to
estimate volume to figure out what you need, one 30-pound bag contains roughly one cubic foot
of castings.

User questions & answers
Question: | How long can this be stored when opened |
Answer: | I am not sure BUT they are castigs -poop-! So I think they'll last and last and last unless they get moldy. Mine are still good. I would NOT store them in the fridge . |
Question: | does this soil keep away bugs like white flies |
Answer: | White flies usually look for the dry areas under leaves or certain areas of grass. They're not harmful unless left alone for years. There was a giant hibiscus in my neighborhood for literally 30 years that had whiteflies that never died but the infestation did get pretty sever but it took decades. Just hose the white flies off with water. Whiteflies HATE 2 things, being too cold or too wet. White flies live on a couple of my hibiscus but don't damage anything if kept in check. Also please don't use chemicals to try and defeat them, as chemicals dont work. Just use a hose every 2 to 3 days or so and rinse off all the "hair" but also try to flush out any actual flies and hit them with the hose to kill them . Please watch out for other beneficial insects such as ladybugs and their larvae, lacewings and their larvae, bees, praying mantis, parasitic wasps, etc... Good luck and remember that many insects are our friends and help keep the bad insects in check! |
Question: | Am i suppose to mix with soil or this alone will just work like normal? I am planning to use it for adding it to established potted plants. Thanks |
Answer: | For Established Potted Plants, Window Boxes or Hanging Baskets - Add 1-2 inches of Earthworm castings to top of soil. Mix in taking care not to damage shallow roots - water - repeat every 2-3 months. |
Question: | Is this a good product for lawn grass seed? Im rennovating my yard and want to plant bluegrass this spring |
Answer: | These castings are great for cool season grasses. Much better than regular synthetic fertilizer. I doubt there are any bug repellant qualities. Its a bit pricey, but you don't need much to get great results. |

Wiggle Worm Soil Builder
Soon to be known as the 'World's Greatest Organic Fertilizer'.
PURE earthworm castings are surely Mother Nature's best kept growing secret. You need only use a small amount in or around your houseplants, vegetables and flowers. The miracles of the earthworm are easily seen in the beautiful growth and yields of your plants.
Seeing is believing! Try some today and join the fast growing ranks of Wiggle Worm Soil Builder believers. You'll be very happy you did.
What are Pure Earthworm Castings?
Wiggle Worm Soil Builder Pure Earthworm Castings Organic Fertilizer is an all purpose natural fertilizer that comes to you straight from nature with no alterations whatsoever. Our nightcrawlers are fed a very rich organic material which contains a wide variety of minerals and trace elements. The earthworms digest this material and in its' passage through the worm, it is beneficially altered both chemically and physically. The end product is 'super humus' an extremely fertile organic fertilizer properly conditioned for best root growth, containing in rich proportion and water soluble form, all the elements required of the earth for optimum plant nutrition.
Pure Earthworm castings, as stated, contain rich proportions of water soluble nutrients. This is a primary reason for being able to provide incredible results. Wiggle Worm Soil Builder allows plants to quickly and easily absorb all essential nutrients and trace elements. This is possible because the worm grinds and uniformly mixes the nutrients and trace elements in simple forms, so plants need only minimal effort to obtain them. This is not the case with most other natural fertilizers. Though they may have many nutrients and/or higher analyses, the ability of plants to optimally use them is limited because they are not broken down to the degree in which the earthworm is able to provide them.
As well as an abundance of available nutrients, Wiggle Worm Soil Builder Pure Earthworm Castings also provide a perfect mix of nutrients that are not readily available, but present for long term nutritional needs. This allows plants to feed as needed for weeks and months at a time, depending on the plant.
Chemical fertilizers usually provide only available synthetic nutrients, much of which are quickly lost into the soil with watering, as a plants' root system can only absorb so much. Chemical fertilizers are most often detrimental to soil microbiology, by-passing and often destroying much of its beneficial microbial and bacterial activity. At the same time, many of these synthetic nutrients are absorbed into your plants and food. Chemical fertilizers and pesticides used in both farms and gardens have become our country's leading cause of water pollution.
Another point in favor of Wiggle Worm Soil Builder Pure Earthworm Castings is the high concentration of beneficial bacteria and microbes added to them by the earthworm in the digestive process. These microscopic creatures help different elements of the soil work in conjunction with each other to create healthy, working soil that provides the best possible atmosphere for optimum growth.
Yet another benefit of Wiggle Worm Soil Builder Pure Earthworm Castings is their ability to improve soil structure. These miniature football shaped particles improve aeration of the soil as they don't pack together. This allows roots the ability to grow fast and fibrous which promotes rapid plant growth. It also allows for excellent drainage in soil so roots don't become waterlogged or develop root rot. While improving aeration, Wiggle Worm Soil Builder Pure Earthworm Castings also increases the soil's water retention capacity as they contain absorbent organic matter that holds only the necessary amounts of water needed by the roots, while their shape allows unnecessary water to easily drain.
The simple fact is that Earthworm Castings were created by nature for the purpose of promoting optimum plant growth and everything required to provide it, is found in them. When you concentrate this odorless, non-burning miracle of nature in greater concentrations than usually found in nature, the results are truly spectacular. This is why we offer a money-back guarantee. Demand PURE worm castings. Demand The Best Wiggle Worm Soil Builder earthworm castings.
