8 best insect control for lawns
Insect control for lawns is an important aspect of lawn care and maintenance. Keeping your lawn free from harmful insects can help promote healthy grass growth and prevent damage. Here are some key points about insect control for lawns:
Identification of Lawn Insects: The first step in insect control for lawns is identifying the specific types of insects that may be causing damage. Common lawn insects include grubs, chinch bugs, armyworms, sod webworms, and various species of beetles and ants.
Damage Assessment: It's essential to assess the extent of damage caused by lawn insects. Signs of damage can include brown patches, thinning grass, and irregularly shaped dead areas in the lawn.
Preventative Measures: One effective way to control lawn insects is through preventative measures. These may include using insect-resistant grass varieties when planting or overseeding your lawn. Proper lawn maintenance practices, such as regular mowing, watering, and fertilizing, can also help prevent insect infestations by promoting healthy grass.
Chemical Insecticides: In cases of severe infestations, chemical insecticides can be used to control lawn insects. These products are available in granular or liquid forms and can be applied to the lawn according to the manufacturer's instructions. It's essential to choose an insecticide that targets the specific insect causing the problem.
Organic and Natural Options: Some homeowners prefer to use organic or natural insect control methods. These can include beneficial nematodes, which are microscopic organisms that target and kill lawn-damaging insects. Neem oil, diatomaceous earth, and insecticidal soaps are also natural options.
Timing of Treatment: The timing of insect control treatment is crucial. Many lawn insects are more active during certain seasons or life stages. For example, grub control is often most effective in late spring or early summer when grubs are young and close to the soil surface.
Application Methods: Whether using chemical or natural insecticides, it's important to follow the recommended application methods and rates. Overusing insecticides can harm beneficial insects and the environment.
Follow-Up: In some cases, a second application of insecticide may be necessary to ensure complete control of lawn insects. Regular monitoring of your lawn for signs of reinfestation is essential.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM): Implementing an Integrated Pest Management approach can be an effective strategy. IPM combines various strategies, including cultural practices, biological controls, and chemical treatments, to manage lawn pests while minimizing environmental impact.
Consulting with Professionals: If you are unsure about the type of insect infestation or the appropriate treatment, it's advisable to consult with a professional lawn care service or a local agricultural extension office for guidance.
Insect control for lawns is essential to maintain a lush and healthy lawn. Choosing the right approach and products, based on the specific insects and conditions in your area, can help you effectively manage and prevent infestations, ensuring your lawn remains beautiful and pest-free.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you use this in vegetable garden |
Answer: | You probably "could" use it to prevent/kill grubs (and other insects), but probably should not use it in your garden(s) if you intend to eat the veggies you grow, since it IS a chemical. Grubs typically won't eat most veggie or flower roots anyway as they tend to be a bit "hard" and "biter" for grubs liking, so you shouldn't even need to use any in your veggie or flower beds or garden areas, they do however enjoy grass roots as they tend to be much thinner, softer and "sweeter" to grubs, so use it only on your lawn/grass. You can also heavily apply this product and NOT worry about any lawn damage. I double the recommended spreader setting and it never negatively affects my lawn and I never get grubs anymore. Good Luck! |
Question: | will it harm earthworms |
Answer: | Grubex will not harm earthworms, nematodes or soil bacteria and does not pose a health risk to wildlife when applied according to label instructions. |
Question: | Can I use with crabgrass preventer |
Answer: | Yes, you can apply at the same time, I have for years! I apply this product each year 7 to 10 days after the LAST frost (usually early to mid March in my area of NYC), that way the soil has started to soften up and the products can get down and do their job, at the same time I apply a "Scotts" brand Crabgrass Pre-Emergent (which only kills/prevents SOME weed types) and so I also throw down a broader spectrum weed n feed to combat most/all other types of weeds and I also get a lawn food and a soil food down as well and I always overseed heavily each fall. Since figuring out my lawn and soil, what it needs and what works best for me, I have not had any grub or carbgrass issues in about 12 years. Good Luck |
Question: | Does this kill Vine Weevil grubs? Thank you |
Answer: | GrubEx1 will control the grub larvae of following insects: Japanese beetles, Asiatic garden beetles, Black turfgrass ataenius, Aphodius spp., European chafers, Green June beetles, May/June beetles, Northern masked chafers, Oriental beetles, Southern masked chafers, Caterpillars (including Armyworms, Cutworms, Sod websorms), Billbug grubs and crane fly larvae (including European Crane Flies). It will also suppress chinchbugs. |

User questions & answers
Question: | can I use this spray for the fruit trees |
Answer: | I would not its for lawns and might not be good for fruit trees or vegetables. for fungus try, Daconil Fungicide Concentrate 16 oz. . Insects try, Ortho Flower, Fruit and Vegetable Insect Killer Concentrate, 32-Ounce or insecticidal soaps . if you will eat anything you spray. |
Question: | How long after applying can you use a fertilizer like weed and feed |
Answer: | Hello, because this product is intended to be used around cracks and crevices and deals with fungus and insect control, it shouldn't have any affect on your application of weed and feed. Please keep in mind this product should be used in very limited ways, ie., avoid runoffs, and try to apply it so it does not affect bee activity. Immunox can be re-applied every couple of weeks when needed. |
Question: | Does it work for grubs |
Answer: | Short answer: No, it is not effective for grubs. I used to use Spectracide's Immunox for treatment and prevention of lawn fungus, until they put a broad spectrum insecticide in there. The Immunox currently sold will not only treat Fungus and insect pests, but will kill beneficial and vital insects like bees, ladybugs, butterflies, preying mantids, etc. So there is no longer any good reason to use Immunox. For Fungus, consider one of the generic offerings of Propaconizole offered here at Amazon and elsewhere. Very effective and gentle on the lawn. For grubs, consider Bayer "24 Hour Grub Killer Plus" with Dylox. Apply it when grubs are active, and water it in heavily right away. It is extremely and quickly effective, and then degrades in 48 hours to a week so that you do not have long lasting effects on beneficial insects. Only if you can keep it out of your gardens and flowering trees, you can use Merit or Adonis for season long control of grubs in your lawn. |
Question: | will this be safe for Zoysia grass |
Answer: | Zoysia is a turf grass as is St Augustinegrass so it should work. Do a little more research. |

Ants
Ants are common pests throughout the world. They are a nuisance, largely because of the annoyance caused by their presence - constructing mounds in the lawn or invading the home from the yard in search of food.
Fleas
Adult fleas are no larger than 1/8 inch long. They are reddish-brown, wingless insects that are laterally compressed, so they look as if they are walking on edge.
Ticks
Although ticks are commonly thought of as insects, they are actually arachnids like spiders and mites. They have 4 pairs of legs and no antennae. They lie in wait for a passing deer, pet, or person to walk near the shrub or grass they are perched on.
Spiders
Spiders can be found throughout the country. If you have the occasional fly or gnat in the house, chances are you’ll also have spiders in the house. Spiders live on bugs, but not enough to be considered for pest control.
Chinch Bugs
Adult chinch bugs are about one-fifth of an inch long and black with white wings folded over their backs. Chinch bugs feed on many kinds of lawn grasses, but St. Augustine grass and Zoysia grass are favorites.
Cutworms
If you see spots of brown grass and birds pecking at your lawn, you could be facing a cutworm infestation.
Mole Crickets
Mole crickets can be twice as long as their singing cousins - and their tunneling can ruin your lawn.
Sod Webworms
Sod webworms are the larvae of lawn moths. They live in the root level of your lawn and munch up the grass leaves. At root level, you’ll see small white tubes made of silky web. At dusk, you might even see the worms themselves.
