11 best hydroponic nutrients
Hydroponic nutrients are specialized formulations of essential elements and minerals that are used in hydroponic systems to nourish and support the growth of plants without the use of soil. Hydroponic gardening is a method of cultivating plants in a water-based nutrient solution, and because there is no soil to provide nutrients naturally, hydroponic growers rely on nutrient solutions to ensure plants receive all the necessary elements for healthy growth. Here's what you should know about hydroponic nutrients:
Essential Elements: Hydroponic nutrients contain all the essential elements required for plant growth. These elements include macronutrients like nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), as well as micronutrients like iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and zinc (Zn). The precise formulation can vary depending on the stage of plant growth and the type of plants being cultivated.
N-P-K Ratio: The N-P-K ratio on hydroponic nutrient labels indicates the relative proportions of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) in the formula. Different stages of plant growth may require different N-P-K ratios, so growers may adjust their nutrient solution accordingly.
Micronutrients: In addition to the macronutrients, hydroponic nutrients also include a mix of micronutrients to ensure that plants receive trace elements necessary for overall health and development. These micronutrients are typically included in chelated forms for improved plant uptake.
pH Regulation: Hydroponic growers need to monitor and adjust the pH of their nutrient solution regularly. The pH level affects nutrient availability to plants. Most plants prefer a slightly acidic pH range, typically between 5.5 and 6.5, but this can vary depending on the specific plant being grown.
Water-Soluble: Hydroponic nutrients are water-soluble, which means they dissolve easily in water. This allows for precise control over nutrient concentrations in the solution.
Formulations for Growth Stages: Some hydroponic nutrient brands offer different formulations for specific growth stages of plants, such as vegetative growth and flowering. These formulations may have varying N-P-K ratios to meet the changing nutritional needs of plants during different phases of their life cycle.
Organic vs. Synthetic: Hydroponic nutrients are available in both organic and synthetic formulations. Organic hydroponic nutrients are derived from natural sources and can provide a more sustainable option for environmentally conscious growers.
Customization: Experienced hydroponic growers often customize their nutrient solutions based on the specific needs of their crops and the conditions in their hydroponic systems. This level of customization allows for fine-tuning of plant nutrition.
Nutrient Strength: Nutrient strength, also known as electrical conductivity (EC) or total dissolved solids (TDS), measures the concentration of nutrients in the solution. Monitoring and adjusting nutrient strength is crucial to prevent overfeeding or underfeeding plants.
Balanced Nutrition: Properly balanced hydroponic nutrients help promote healthy plant growth, optimize crop yields, and reduce the risk of nutrient deficiencies or imbalances that can negatively impact plant health.
Hydroponic nutrients are a key component of successful hydroponic gardening. To achieve the best results, hydroponic growers must carefully manage nutrient solutions by monitoring pH, adjusting nutrient strength, and choosing the right formulation for their specific plants and growth stages.

User questions & answers
Question: | Do i add this to water that is already balanced or do i mix it then set pH for my needs. I guess what im asking is is it neutral |
Answer: | I have to very slightly adjust PH, down, as always, after adding nutes. My tap water has a TDS of 90-ish ppm and a PH of 8 out of tap. When mixed in 5 gallon buckets... I add 20 ml of each ( Micro, Grow, Bloom: in that order) I end up with a TDS of 480 - 500 ppm and a PH of 6.2 ish. Growing hydro lettuce (Kratky and DWC) So I drop 4-5 drops of PH Down in the bucket and things look good, dropping PH into the high 5's. |
Question: | I dont see how often you apply just the strenght |
Answer: | On the website it says that if you dump your reservoir once a week then you can top it off with just plain water in between. The table on the bottle is not for any photoperiod plants so please check their website as they do have a feeding schedule for photoperiod plants, such as medical marijuana. They will not answer any questions regarding marijuana so never say or use any term referring to marijuana. So far this may be my favorite hydro fertilizer I have used, it's easy to use, helps stabilize PH and has made my plants grow much faster, not to mention how great the root growth is. |
Question: | Approximately how many gallons of nutrient solution will this make |
Answer: | 1 (US) fluid ounce, equals 6 (US) teaspoons. So it's 6 times the amount of ounces in bottle for the total amount of teaspoons telling you how many gallons you can get. With a 32 oz bottle if you use one teaspoon per gallon of water that's 102 gallons of mix. 204 gallons of mix if you only use half a teaspoon. |
Question: | Is it necessary to mix 2 tonics together? How much tonic do I use if I have a 20 gallon reservoir |
Answer: | I grow in soil. The soil I use is already rich in nutrition "Happy Frog". I use about 1/2 teaspoon of FloraGro & 1/2 teaspoon FloraMicro per Gallon of water. I water every 3 to 4 days depending on the Moisture of the soil. Every 3rd feeding I flush the plants with pure water and let the soil to dry until I notice stress in the plant and resume feeding. When it's time to induce flowering I quit using FloraGro. And start using 1 teaspoon FloraBloom and 1 teaspoon FloraMicro and follow the same feeding schedule as above. The FloraMicro is very important for overall health and vigor of the plant. About 10 days before harvest I flush with a 1/2 teaspoon FloraBloom and FloraMicro, 5 days before harvest I flush with pure water and let dry out for 5 to 6 days then harvest. Very IMPORTANT! Is the Ph of your water after adding your fertilizer and when you flush with pure water. I keep my Ph @ 6.0 Just a helpful hint. Happy growing! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it change the PH a lot up or down |
Answer: | MaxiGro 10-5-14 dropped my 9.5 pH water (147 ppm) to 6.0 pH when using about 5.5 grams per gallon (about 1 flat tsp / gallon). |
Question: | is this stuff the full package ...do i have to ph the water or is it phed by adding this |
Answer: | Ph water. Ph drops with this product. |
Question: | Has anyone tried using this in a Tower Garden |
Answer: | I use this in my tower garden, I mix it in plastic 1 gallon milk container 1 tablespoon maxigro. I was wondering how much maxibloom can I add along with maxigro? |
Question: | How many gallons of nutrient solution will the 2.2 lbs. of MaxiGro serve |
Answer: | The directions say 1-2 tsp (or 5-10 grams) per gallon of water. The package net weight is 1 kg or 1000 grams. So do the math 1000 grams divided by 5 grams = 200 maximum servings. Therefore, a 2.2 lb package can make at most 200 gallons worth of nutrient solution. |

User questions & answers
Question: | shelf life of this combo product |
Answer: | I would alternate with the age old bloom. All of their products are amazing and each one does something unique. If you are looking to get a heavier kid of figs I would use grow early in the season and then bloom following that, then alternate until it is harvest time then use their barley supplement to feed the plant to continue producing longer and a heavier yield. You really can't go wrong with these products and do use bloom as a foliar spray- you'll be impressed. Have used this on thousands of trees from fruit trees to pines over 15 years and is astonishing. Best plant food hands down |
Question: | May I use this fertilizer for chili pepper plants growing in the ground |
Answer: | My GH rain forest has no issues using Age old products. My peppers and cilantro do very well in it. Its the highest ratted 12-6-6 out there. enjoy |
Question: | Does this generally tend to raise or lower pH |
Answer: | One serving is listed as 1/4 tsp. per day. It is not measured in drops. Please click on the bottle, which can be seen in this listing, and it supplies this information. This 1/4 tsp. dose supplies 50,000% daily value, a hefty dose of B12. Very good for you. I swear by it. I've been taking B12 for decades, and it really gives me extra concentration and energy. Even a couple small drops a day would provide a lot of B12, since a tiny 1/4 tsp. supplies 50,000% daily value. |

Twin Canaries Liquid Volume Conversion Chart
Soil Feeding Schedule
Use your preferred FoxFarm potting soil when transplanting seedlings into larger containers. We recommend a two gallon size or larger. FOR BEST RESULTS: Feed up to two times per week. Maintain a pH of 5.6 to 6.8 to prevent nutrient lockout and reduce stress on plants. Never mix pure concentrates together; always add water first. Should plants show signs of stress or color irregularities, flush your system. When using coco-based media, flush every two weeks during the flowering cycle as coco has a tendency to retain unwanted salt residue more than peat-based soils.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you use General Hydroponics FloraGro for your Aerogarden herbs |
Answer: | Lowers the ph . If I use my tap water which is about 8.3 it ends up perfect at 5.6 to 5.9 . If I use rain water which is closer to 7 it ends up a tad too low so I add ph up. |
Question: | how often do you use this every time you water |
Answer: | I always use the recipe on the packaging: 2.4g MasterBlend, 1.2g Magnesium Sulfate, 2.4g Calcium Nitrate, all times the number of gallons. It isn't amazing for any of my plants, but it works REASONABLY well for ALL my plants. And I sure as heck won't be tweaking the recipe for each individual plant. Imagine how big a pain that would be if you grow 20 different things! Anything that won't grow in this recipe is something I'll just buy at the store. |
Question: | How much is needed per gallon? Just trying to compare to another product |
Answer: | Our staff ISA-certified arborist typically suggests 1.5 ounces of GROW per gallon of solution per diameter inch at breast height (DBH) drenched into the soil around the tree--preferably in the area that is mulched. As an example, a 4-inch tree would need 6 ounces of GROW in 4 gallons of water. You can water after that with another 4 gallons, or wait until the next rain event. Thanks and let us know if you have any further questions! |
Question: | How do I use this product? It says "Forlamicro mix with with water" first, and then "floragro" on the label. Do I have to buy other stuff |
Answer: | We grow a variety of indoor plants with our Age Old Grow. It should work beautifully for your ficus. Happy growing! |

Question: | For sealed containers what is the shelf life |
Answer: | The bottle says 1/4 tsp tp 3 tsp depending on the type of plants. I average using 2 tsp per gallon and have been very happy with the results. |
Question: | how much those three bottles weigh together |
Answer: | Depending on what you are growing, you may need Florabloom, and Floramicro. I was growing lettuce, so I did not require the Florabloom or the Floramicro. |
Question: | At what strength should these be used with cannabis |
Answer: | I take mine and fill up one of each in smaller resealable containers then reseal the bigger bags and have not had any issues at all that way. |
Question: | What does 0 5 4 mean? i thought it was supposed to be 20 20 20 for npk ratios |
Answer: | I don't know about in the ground, but I've got a chili pepper plant that's been living in this stuff for six months, and it's in good health. Almost ready to harvest, but man this plant is slow! |

Question: | Is there a pumper you know of that fits these containers |
Answer: | I use it this way Beginning(growth stage) 2tsp green, 1 tsp red, 1 tsp pink Flowering 1 tsp green, 1tsp red, 2 tsp pink Been using for 2 years |
Question: | What are mix rates |
Answer: | You need to do a LOT more research. 20 20 20 (N-P-K) would burn a lot of plants depending on their current growth phase. You need to refrain from purchasing any nutes. Do more research on N-P-K AND micronutrients. |
Question: | can you use this with aquaponics |
Answer: | Yes I use them with my Aerogardens growing peppers and love them! |
Question: | Hi what is the expiration date |
Answer: | I use it every other watering, so about every other week, but that is just based on my needs and there are probably a bunch of variables that would determine how often you would want to use it. I know certain plants recommend more or less frequent fertilizing. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this product settle out easily |
Answer: | Great question! Your Idoo will hold about 1.3 gallons of water. If you choose not to mix the entire packet of grow mix and store it for later refills (keeping it in a covered bucket out of direct light), the mix ratio is a slightly rounded tsp per gallon. So we'd add a heaping teaspoon for 1.3 gallons. Our Grow Mix is very forgiving so no need to stress if you add a little more or less. We recommend adding it whenever you add water to your system. Every 6-8 weeks or at plant changes we recommend you dump the reservoir and start fresh. Our customer service line is always there to help 678-435-9494 if you have more questions - Cindy for Go Grow Planters |
Question: | What is the ppm number that i am trying to achieve |
Answer: | Thanks for your question - it is one we get asked a lot. The short answer is the plants will tell you! As long as you have nutrient solution dripping from the roots of the plant with the shortest roots, the level of nutrient solution is enough. There is plenty of food in the solution to keep your plants healthy if the roots can reach it. Once the solution drops to a level the roots can't reach it is time to mix up some Grow Mix and fill the planter back up. When the weather is hot, we alternate straight water with nutrient solution every other time. |
Question: | How many gallons of this solution do I need per lettuce plant? Also how many times do I need to replace solution during plant growth |
Answer: | Top Performance Plastic Pet... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001VP59KO?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share These fit |
Question: | What is the N-P-K ratio for this product |
Answer: | The amount is on the side of the container for the different growth stages I mix all three of them in the water together and use the amount that is on the container |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this product be mixed beforehand and stored for use later on |
Answer: | The gallons needed will demand on the size of the method of hydroponics you are using. I am using the Kratky method were the lettuce plants are in mesh pots inserted into a 1" thick sheet of styrofoam that floats directly on the nutrient mixture in a low sided tub. You should mix your solution as per the directions on the 2 part packages. The solution I us in the Kratky method I use it lasts from the time I first time I put the plants into contact with the solution for the complete cycle until I harvest the plants about 6 weeks later. Other methods such as aero ponies with use more solution and as your reservoir slowly empties you will have to mix another batch of the solution. |
Question: | Hello...viewing the label iron is not listed. Is it present in the recipe |
Answer: | Hi, seller here. When folks ask this question we want to make sure they are not combining this with other nutrients. This is a complete formulation with ALL macro (N,P,K,Mg,Ca) and all micronutrients (Fe,Mn,Mo,Cu,Zn,B) that are necessary for optimum growth for this type of plant and we do provide the very detailed mg/L of each of these on our website... and the NPK can be calculated from that, but it does not provide the complete picture. With that said, the NPK is 24:6:25, or 185mg/L soluble nitrogen, 50mg/L phosphorus, 200 mg/L potassium. |
Question: | When base a and base b is used? both used at the same time |
Answer: | Interesting question - Our Grow Mix is granular so the pH comes almost entirely from the water you use to mix it into solution. We've tested all types of water from Georgia to Ghana, from well to city to filtered to softened to rain. We've found that the pH of water runs from 5.4 -7.3. Most plants thrive in a pH of 6-7. The Grow Mix has worked well in all the types of water we have tested and has very little impact to the pH. Our local tap water runs about 6.8. When we add the Grow Mix is drops it slightly to 6.2. It is so benign that I mix it with my hand - I rinse afterwards much like I would do with saltwater. Hope that helps answer your question, Cindy for Go Grow Planters |
