6 best food grades

Food grades, in the context of gardening and agriculture, refer to the quality and suitability of fertilizers and soil amendments for growing food crops. These grades ensure that the products meet specific standards and do not contain harmful contaminants that could affect human health or the environment. Here are some key points about food grades in gardening and agriculture:

  1. Food-Grade Fertilizers: Food-grade fertilizers are those that meet strict safety and quality standards, making them safe for use on food crops that will be consumed by humans. These fertilizers are tested and certified to ensure they do not contain harmful levels of heavy metals, pathogens, or contaminants.

  2. Certification Agencies: Various certification agencies and organizations, such as the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) and OMRI (Organic Materials Review Institute), provide certifications for fertilizers and soil amendments to verify their suitability for organic and conventional food production.

  3. Organic vs. Conventional: Organic food-grade fertilizers are specifically formulated to meet organic farming standards. They are derived from natural sources and are free from synthetic chemicals. Conventional food-grade fertilizers may also be used in non-organic farming but must meet safety and regulatory standards.

  4. Testing and Analysis: Food-grade fertilizers undergo rigorous testing and analysis to ensure that they do not contain harmful levels of heavy metals like lead, cadmium, or contaminants such as pathogens or pesticide residues.

  5. Labeling: Food-grade fertilizers are typically labeled as safe for use on edible crops. Look for certifications and labels on the product packaging that indicate its suitability for food production.

  6. Application: When using food-grade fertilizers, it's essential to follow the recommended application rates and guidelines to ensure the safety and health of both the plants and the consumers.

  7. Compost: Food-grade compost is another important aspect of food production. Compost used in growing food crops should be properly composted and free from contaminants to prevent the introduction of harmful substances into the soil and ultimately into the food.

  8. Regulations and Standards: Different regions and countries may have specific regulations and standards governing the use of food-grade fertilizers and soil amendments. It's important to be aware of and comply with local regulations when using these products.

In summary, food grades in the context of gardening and agriculture ensure that fertilizers, soil amendments, and composts used in food crop production meet strict safety and quality standards. This helps ensure that the food produced is safe for human consumption and free from harmful contaminants, contributing to food safety and overall agricultural sustainability.

User questions & answers

Question: Has anyone tried this for sous vide cooking? How did it work out
Answer: I purchased a 7" and a 10" for Sous Vide. I agree with the other comment that it is difficult to get all of the air out with these. With ziplock bags, the bag molds itself to the food as you submerge it under the water. The Sasher bags are too thick for that. So the only way I see them working is if you put something metal in the bag to weigh it down. Don't plan on trying to use it with Sous Vide again.
Question: How much can a bag store? I'm interested in volume so I can freeze soups (stacked flat in freezer). Is this product appropriate for that
Answer: The snack size stasher holds 9.9 fluid ounces, the sandwich size holds 15 fluid ounces, and our half-gallon stasher holds 64.2 fluid ounces. Stasher is great for freezing soups, however we recommend that you not stack anything on top of a full bag until the contents are frozen.
Question: how many bags for this price
Answer: My first response was removed. (keep this in mind when reading the reviews) so I'll answer very succinctly. Yes, the prices are for one bag, unless you get the 7-pack of mixed sizes which, as of today, is about $95. In my opinion glass is far less expensive, safer, and longer lasting. (16 or 32 oz Ball jars cost less than $1/each if you shop them, 1/2 gallon is maybe $2.) There are good deals on Amazon for glass container sets too. The German/France LFGB method of testing is more comprehensive and strict than FDA. When I pay a premium for my silicone I accept nothing less than LFGB food grade, and the premium is usually only a few dollars more, eg, LFGB silicone ice cube trays are about $5 more for a set of 2 ($17 vs $12). This might be a reasonable price for a set of two of these bags. Search for the difference between FDA and LFGB food grade at Just Smart Kitchenware (& checkout the pinch test while you're there.) In time these will get knocked off and the prices for silicone bags will likely come down. A lot. Just as they did for silicone stretch lids and cookware. Competition will probably eventually emerge with LFGB food grade silicone bags as an option as well, and at competitive prices. If this answer gets removed I'm going to the mat, and I'll likely turn it into a review. ;)
Question: Where are these manufactured
Answer: I agree that I hesitate to buy these because they are made in China. Due to manufacturing policies there it is not possible to be 100% sure that the materials being used are as advertised. There have been too many recalls from China for me to want to use any unknown material for food. Especially because in a food storage bag, the food will sit for some time, exposing any unknown contaminants to the food.
Question: Will it kill our honey bees
Answer: Very possibly. It is used as a pesticide. It is non-toxic, but it causes insects to dehydrate and die. Here is a link to the fact sheet about DE. http://npic.orst.edu/factsheets/degen.html. One thing to consider is where you intend to use it and how the bees would be exposed to it. You could probably sprinkle it on the ground around your tomato plants since bees are unlikely to find anything attractive there; use it in your house to kill fleas, etc.
Question: Has anyone use this on their pets for fleas? Thank you
Answer: Yes, Diatomaceous Earth bag is labeled to kill fleas. Thoroughly treat the floor and bedding in and around pets' sleeping quarters. Treat surrounding cracks and crevices, baseboards, carpeting and wherever fleas are suspected. It is also recommended to treat your pets with a product registered for flea control, such as Flea Spray.
Question: This is ok around animals right
Answer: My vet told me not to apply it on the cats because it gets into their lung through breathing. Diatomaceous Earth is siliceous sedimentary rock reduced to powder, as such is an abrasive, it kill insects that repeatedly walk on it buy sanding and slashing their exoskeletons. So if apply to animals can damage their lungs in the same manner. I used in my garage after Flea treatment, but I vacuumed thoroughly before letting my pets inside the premises. I also use it in flower beds but don't let cat in the area till after the rain disperse the powder.
Question: will this work for bed bugs
Answer: We had a problem with bed bug but were able to conquer them with heat and bed bug foggers. Our electricity was high but bed bugs were gone.

User questions & answers

Question: So this helps with all roaches
Answer: Read on this page under 'Our Story' and it tells you how they got rid of cock roaches and water bugs at the white house in 1924.
Question: How well does this work on Camel or cave crickets
Answer: Very well
Question: does it kill bedbugs and fleas
Answer: YES this does kill bedbugs. Here's my horrific bed bug story. I realized we had bed bugs early because my nephew had them so I knew it was just a matter of time before I ended up w them. So I did a bunch of research on this product. It was recommended to me by the terminx guy on the phone. His fee was outrageously expensive. 1200 for 1 bedroom of my house and my living room furniture. So we put this product all over our bedrooms and living room. It was like living in filth for 4 weeks straight. But the bed bugs died. It takes two weeks for this to kill them. It's not a contact kill. We also put new box spring and mattress covers on that were bed bug proof. And covered our bed and living room. My sister had a bigger bed bug problem and she used this and temprid sc. Hope this helps!!!
Question: I used a hand-made shaker last time. Is it worth the extra $ to get the powder duster
Answer: I used a old ketchup bottle and filled it 1/3 and squeezed it that way to spread it. It worked better than the powder duster.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it kill fleas on cats or dogs
Answer: Either! A flea is a flea. I have cats but I know it will kill fleas on dogs. Make sure to powder them up well! Also you can treat your carpeting and dog bedding as well.
Question: How does it detox ?or what does it remove from your body
Answer: Like bentonit clay, DE has a uniquely strong negative ionic charge which causes it to `magnetically` attract any substance with a positive ionic charge (i.e., bacteria, toxins, virus' metals, etc.) These substances are both adsorbed (sticking to the outside like Velcro) and absorbed (drawn inside) by the DE molecules. Your body doesn`t digest the DE in its entirety, so it passes through your system, collecting the toxins, scrubbing your intestines, and removing positively charged bugs (not your negatively charged good gut bacteria though :) as the clay is eliminated. What you don't pass is absorbed into your body, or rather your body leeches minerals from the silica as it needs it. Silica is literally the stuff that makes our bodies. It's composed of some 14 essential trace minerals and often we are extremely deficient in silica. It's some pretty neat stuff and has a wide range of uses.
Question: there are no instructions on this mom-pop/home-business bag it came in. Please advise
Answer: Depends on what you use it for, be careful it is like powered sugar, but do not breath in the dust or get it in your eyes. I put a little dust in my cupboards to keep out anything that crawls, I dust the dogs bed with a small handful to keep fleas from making a home, a little dust in the dogs ears or a cats ears helps keep the pet free from mites ,ticks, and fleas. This product has many uses, just google and it will give you many ideas. If you have ants invading your home, a line of the power when the ants walk, and they die within 4 to 5 hours. They will avoid it after a day. Good luck, hope this helps
Question: How long does this take to work on fleas? Have had on my dog and cat for over a week now and I'm not seeing any results
Answer: For fleas, I did not see results with DE. At all actually. We took in a stray cat years ago, the vet said she had no fleas, but she did!!!! I tried and exhausted all natural methods first, none of them worked. Here's what I did; clean all carpets with a professional carpet cleaning machine, you must must must use RUBBING ALCOHOL and soap,ALOT of rubbing alcohol, this kills all of the fleas and more importantly the uh, babies,if you will. Quarantine your cats, while the carpets are being cleaned and dried, bathe them with a flea shampoo and physically remove and kill all fleas you can see, then unfortunately you do have to have them wear a flea collar for at least six months. I wanted to avoid chemicals but it was the only thing that worked. So this was the method that worked, it may help you . Good luck!!

User questions & answers

Question: Does this come with an applicator
Answer: Yes, it comes with an applicator but it was at the bottom of the bag and at first I thought it didn't have one.
Question: how do you apply it for a large area of the yard
Answer: I use the little puffer that comes with the order, It can truly put out the dust. I use it because of my neighbor's dogs fleas. Word of advice! WARE a good mask, I did not and had lung problems for a few months.
Question: I heard this stuff works for killing fleas. Is this true
Answer: Yes it definitely worked for getting rid of fleas on my cat and dog. Make sure is specifically Food grade. What i did was first was flea comb the pet, wetting the comb in a very mild solution of dishwashing soap and water in order to kill the flea larvae and physically disable the fleas that come in contact with the comb. Combing with a mild dishsoap solution also prevent the adult fleas from jumping away so that you can discard them into the solution. After catching all the fleas in a sitting i run my fingers quickly through their fur to rid of any dampness. Beforehand I like to spray them with a 1:1 solution of apple cider vinegar to discourage fleas from the environment hopping on them. Then finally, I finish by rubbing a light amount into their dried fur. Do this daily until you no longer comb out any fleas. When no more fleas are combed out check back with the comb and solution every 2 or 3 days reapplying the dust into dried fur after each time. Be careful about using too much powder in order to minimize or avoid breathing it. When i first detected fleas on my cat and combed him with the dishsoap solution i caught 22 fleas on day one, 14 fleas on day two, 4 fleas on day 3, and none on day four. I found that after day 1, the fleas were looking smaller and less acrive. Flea Combing in combination with treating the environment eliminated the fleas effectively. When you detect fleas, youll have to treat the environment with the food grade diatomaceous earth at the same time in order to be effective. For the environement first clean your place to minimize air pollutants like excess dust and debris, then lightly dust this stuff everywhere. After 2 or 3 days, vacuum it all up and then lightly redust again. Repeat this for a month. You will have sucessfully elimated fleas so long as you treated all the problem areas at the same time. Youll notice the majority of the pest population dead after first vacuuming but The reason you need to repeat dusting and vacuuming for at least a month is so that the hatchlings come in contact with dust. Egg larvae doesnt get killed by the stuff but it does create an inhospitable environment for when they hatch. I think i read surviving eggs may hatch within 7-14 days after being laid or something. You just need one surviving female flea to lay eggs for the nightmare to begin again, so its better to be thorough and treat for at least month. Note, This treatment will also rid of bedbugs, mited, roaches, ants, etc. You can put this stuff everywhere pests come into contact. Its pretty amazing. Again, Just dont use too powder at a time. you really dont need to see it everywhere for it to work and its not good to breath in. You and your pets will survive month of it and there wont be permanent damage but still, its not good to breath. I also read pests will avoid walking into obvious areas of powder and will instead go around it, so you want to create a very fine and light layer of it everwherr so that they hop into it unwittingly. To apply to the environment there many clever dusters out there, even ones you can make yourself using common household items, like a sock. Using your hands to sprinkle will creatr uneven mess with a lot of wasted excess, and most likely will cause respiratory irritation so I would invest in a smart duster made for this sort of stuff.
Question: Does it kill fireants
Answer: A better solution for ants is a product called A M D R O which is an ant bait which works by having the worker ants feed it to the queen, who then dies, and when the queen is dead the worker ants all die. Simply put a few grains in the path of any ants you see, or broadcast a small amount in the yard after each rain, and you will no longer have an ant problem. This method does take 2 weeks or so to work, but with this method, you DO kill the queen, who is busily producing more ants if you simply kill the visible worker ants!
