14 best fertilizers
Fertilizers are substances used to enhance the growth and health of plants by providing essential nutrients. They are a crucial component in agriculture, gardening, and horticulture. Here is some information about fertilizers:
Nutrient Enrichment: Fertilizers are primarily used to enrich the soil or growing medium with essential nutrients that plants need for their growth and development. These essential nutrients are categorized into three main types:
- Macronutrients: These include nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), often referred to as NPK. These are required by plants in larger quantities.
- Secondary Nutrients: Calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and sulfur (S) are secondary nutrients required in moderate amounts.
- Micronutrients: These are trace elements such as iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), boron (B), and molybdenum (Mo), needed in very small quantities.
Synthetic vs. Organic Fertilizers: Fertilizers can be categorized as synthetic (chemical) or organic. Synthetic fertilizers are manufactured chemically and provide nutrients in readily available forms. Organic fertilizers are derived from natural sources like compost, manure, bone meal, or fish emulsion and release nutrients slowly as they decompose.
Application Methods: Fertilizers can be applied to plants in various ways, including broadcasting over the soil, side-dressing (applying near the base of the plant), foliar spraying (on leaves), and incorporation into the planting hole or potting mix.
Timing: Proper timing of fertilizer application is essential. Fertilizers can be applied before planting (pre-plant), during planting, or as ongoing maintenance (top-dressing). The timing depends on the specific needs of the plant and the type of fertilizer used.
Soil Testing: Soil testing is crucial to determine the nutrient content and pH level of the soil. This information helps gardeners and farmers choose the right type and amount of fertilizer to achieve optimal plant growth.
Slow-Release Fertilizers: Some fertilizers are designed to release nutrients gradually over time. Slow-release or controlled-release fertilizers reduce the risk of over-fertilization and provide nutrients to plants consistently.
Environmental Impact: Overuse or improper application of fertilizers can lead to environmental issues such as water pollution. Excess nutrients can leach into water bodies, causing problems like algal blooms.
Specialized Fertilizers: There are specialized fertilizers for specific types of plants or growing conditions. For example, acid-loving plants like azaleas may require fertilizers with lower pH levels.
Storage and Handling: Fertilizers should be stored safely, away from children and pets, and in a cool, dry place. Proper handling is important to avoid skin or eye contact and inhalation of dust.
Regulation: Fertilizers are subject to regulation in many countries to ensure their safety, quality, and accurate labeling.
In summary, fertilizers play a vital role in agriculture and gardening by providing essential nutrients to plants. Gardeners and farmers need to choose the right type of fertilizer, apply it at the appropriate time, and consider factors such as soil testing and environmental impact to promote healthy plant growth while minimizing negative effects on the environment.

User questions & answers
Question: | My year old rhodendrons and forester grass plants outside are not growing well, can i use these outside |
Answer: | I use them for indoor plants. I don't know why it wouldn't be okay, but you would probably need to use so many of them. My indoor plant is 15 years old. I use the liquid miracle grow for plants outside. I add it to the water. Wish I could be more help. |
Question: | Has anyone used these for ferns or spider plants |
Answer: | I am currently using them for 3 spider plant pots I have. They are growing so fast and 2 of them are flowering. |
Question: | Would it be ok to use these with succulents |
Answer: | Most succulents are not heavy feeders. I rarely, if ever, fertilize them. When I do, it's only in the spring when they flower and start putting on the most growth and I use a water soluble fertilizer at half strength, at most. |
Question: | How accurate is the two month Claim? Does it mean 2 month for the entire pack? or 2 month for each sitck |
Answer: | It's 2 months each spike. Here's some dos and don'ts.. DO NOT push the spikes directly into the roots of the plant, instead circle around the planter.. ie. in a 10 inch pot I use 3 spikes spaced the same distance from each other about a 1/2 inch from the side of the pot. Push the spikes down about an inch into the soil and water. I have never used a Miracle - Gro product I didn't like. Hope this helps.... |

Particle Size Matters
Unlike the pebble-sized particles in a typical 10-10-10 fertilizer that can be found at your local hardware store, PGF Balanced particles are extremely fine. In fact, the particles are so small, PGF Balanced provides more than double the coverage of your average granular fertilizer. Significantly better coverage ensures every square inch of your lawn or garden is receiving the nutrients it needs for an even feeding.
New or Established Lawns
PGF Balanced can be used any time during the growing season but is ideal for use in early spring and fall when high nitrogen levels are not as desirable. Lawns can be established or recently seeded. PGF Balanced can also be used during sod installation.
Gardens and Flower Beds
Gardens can benefit from this perfectly balanced formula by mixing the PGF Balanced fertilizer into the soil while turning or tilling at the beginning of the growing season. Continue with PGF Balanced applications every 3 weeks, or as needed.
Trees and Shrubs
Trees and shrubs in landscaped areas will appreciate a nutritional boost from PGF Balanced. For established plants, apply PGF Balanced one to two times each year at the base. For new trees and shrubs, work PGF Balanced into the soil when planting.
Application Recommendations
One 18 lb bag of PGF Balanced fertilizer will provide up to 5,000 sq ft of coverage. While this formula can be applied any time during the growing season, it is ideal for spring and fall applications. Be sure to sweep or blow off sidewalks and driveways as the added iron can leave rust marks. If you have left over product, seal the bag completely and store in a dry, climate controlled area.

User questions & answers
Question: | I have a container grown mandarin orange tree (40" tall). Should I use the all purpose food or find a better N,P,K formula for citrus only |
Answer: | If you already have the all purpose spray use it. Spray the leaves, stems and roots once a week for a month, then decide for your self. If you can't see a difference it's not working for your tree. All my plants are under 4 feet, but my climbing roses. My small figs, goji berries, honeysuckle, hibiscus, jasmine and roses respond to miracle. My other plants do not respond, try and learn. I hope this was helpful. Keith central Florida |
Question: | Anybody have a good experience feeding this to their potted Sago's |
Answer: | YES, I was a over the road trucker for 24 years. I know nothing about plants. This product WORKS, everything under 4 feet needs it. We have reordered 3 X 10 pound to last all year. This and black cow are the two most important things growers need. Hope this was helpful, good luck and GOD bless... Keith and Mary |
Question: | how much fertilizer per water |
Answer: | The product comes with directions For garden plants outside use one tablespoon per gallon. The spoon comeswith the product. For use on inside plants use the small side of the spoon about 1/2 tsp pergallon. for tomatoes use tomato fertilizer, use mir gro 2000421. If you need more help please ask? If you have cabbage problems use a BT product, the little bugs hate it. If you want some spendy stuff use a worm compost tea solution. It is natures organic worm castings, amz sells it good stuff, I think 5lbs for $16.00, Goes a long way. Surprise your neighbors who have a garden. |
Question: | do you have to dilute this in water? I am looking for a sprinkle on and forget about it pellet |
Answer: | You can sprinkle it on and then water it in. Make sure you don't get it to close to the truck (base of the plant) or the leaves as it may burn them. I don't use it without diluting on seedlings. Just on established plants. The problem with sprinkling on is remember it only takes a small amount of the Miracle Grow to make a gallon of water so don't put a lot in the pot. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used for pomegranate plants |
Answer: | Pomegranate plants or trees can use this fertilizer, since their needs are similar, but I read that a 8-8-8 formula would be better formulation. This fertilizer ,Miracle Grow Shake'n'feed for citrus is 13-7-13. |
Question: | Has anyone used this product on avocado trees |
Answer: | I am a science teacher and have grown many Avocados from a pit, and have only used this product. Many of my trees are 1-4 years old and doing better than expected. |
Question: | What is the NPK ratio for this fertilizer |
Answer: | The NPK is 8-2-12 |
Question: | What is the n-p-k ratio of this product? why are we having to ask this, this is basic |
Answer: | A 12-4-8 NPK ratio is not a good formula for tomato fruit production. It's OK to give it this when the plant is small, but you will not get a good tomato crop if you continue with this ratio. Fruit production requires more phosphorus than this fertilizer can provide. I always have excellent fruit production with 10-10-10. |

In garden applications, scientists have discovered that these microbes actually clean the soil, returning it to a healthier, more natural state. Jobe's Biozome contains a proprietary species of Archaea that quickly breaks down complex hydrocarbons & minerals into basic nutrients & trace elements that plants readily absorb. Mycorrhizal fungi expands the surface-absorbing area of the roots by 100 to 1, 000 times, sending out filaments that act as extensions of the plant's root system, helping plants absorb more water & nutrients. In return, the fungi receive essential sugars & other compounds from the plant roots, fueling their own growth. Finally, the healthy bacterial strain in Biozome improves the soil structure & quality, keeping nutrients near the roots. Jobe's Organics vegetable & tomato granular fertilizer is OMRI listed & may be used in certified organic food production according to the USDA national organic program. Question: | For a potted meyer lemon tree, how much should I use |
Answer: | My lemon tree is only about 2 ft. tall and has been inside all winter. I added 1 3/4C. Jobe's fertilizer and watered it well. that was two days ago and it appears to be doing very well. Because my tree has been inside I have been misting the leaves every day.It had about 50 blossoms on it and is very healthy. I hope to plant it in the ground in April or May., |
Question: | What is the percentage of nitrogen, phosphate and potassium in the fertilizer |
Answer: | This fertilizer is 4-4-4. The first number indicates 4% nitrogen, second 4% phosphorus and the third 4% potassium. The best way is to incorporate 4 pounds of 4-4-4 per 100 sq.ft. prior to planting. This kind of fertilizer is called "all purpose" fertilizer. My recommendation is that you analyze your soil with an inexpensive test kit (Amazon has them). Then decide what you want to grow and research on-line what the optimum fertilization ranges are for your specific plants or vegetables. Then, if you incorporate the all purpose fertilizer into you soil before planting you can spot supplement with specific fertilizers as needed. There are many organic solutions available to you. The great thing about Jobe's -09526 is that it is organic so you will be starting off the right way. Lots of luck with your plants. |
Question: | what are the actual ingredients |
Answer: | Protein Hydrolysate from feather meal, bone meal, composted poultry manure, sulfate of potash and various bacteria, endomycorrhizae, ectomycorrhzae and archaea. |

Question: | when is best month to apply |

Question: | May I apply it now (today is June |
Answer: | If you apply this fertilizer that contain 34-0-10 then the nitrogen will stimulate top growth which is not what you want in the winter time due to freezing weather. It's better to apply like 10-2-7 in winter. That way the roots are stimulated and not top growth. |

Tips For Lawn Care Success
First, regular feedings help your lawn look it’s best and provide the nutrients it needs to withstand the stresses of weeds, weather and activity. Secondly, after you mow leave the grass clippings on the lawn! This allows grass to use water more effectively. Finally, water; utilize nature’s sprinkler as much as possible. When you do have to water, do it between 6 and 10AM - less water is lost to evaporation and more reaches the roots.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this product be utilized with the 7-1-2 Innova Organic Fertilizer |
Answer: | Yes definitely. 7-1-2 is an organic fertilizer which it would not burn your lawn. |
Question: | I'm working to correct my soil ph. it is very acidic and therefore having trouble taking up nutrients. would you recommend waiting until ph is fixed |
Answer: | Yes, we would recommend you to wait your pH back to the neutral state first before apply PGF. We would recommend you check out Humic acid and Innova organic fertilizer product. |
Question: | setting on my Scott's edgeguard for the 18 pound bag only got me coverage of barely 3,000 square feet. I don't see how that would treat 5k sq ft |
Answer: | Lower your spreader setting or walk faster. Either will thin out the application a bit for a broader coverage. I'm rather OCD and I use a lower setting and do a pass in one direction with half the bag, then put the other half in and go across the lawn at a 90 degree angle for a more even distribution. Also, I recommend buying the larger bag as it is cheaper per pound, then just roll up the top and tape it and stick it in the garage or shed for the next application. I first used this in 2020, and the larger bags were not available, which means I need to probably go ahead and start looking for some now. Look at big box stores over the winter when they are trying to clear shelf space for the holidays and you can find lawn care stuff frequently at reduced rates. This left darker green stripes on my lawn which wasn't the fault of the product, but my lawn was deficient in iron. If you have this happen, adding more iron should help even out the color. Ironite is one popular choice. There are also spray on liquid iron applications if you need a quick fix for a lawn party or something. |
Question: | Can i safely add this to my normal lawn care treatments? in other words, if i'm putting weed and feed down in may, can i also add this as well |
Answer: | Two partial answers....the real answer is maybe. Each turf type requires a certain amount of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, which are the 16-4-8, meaning if you had a 100 pound bag of this fertilizer, 16 pounds would be nitrogen, 4 pounds would be phosphorus, and 8 pounds would be potassium. Different turfs require different amounts of these nutrients each year. For example, my Zoysia requires 2-3 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft. per year, and the other 4/8 in the bag would be good ranges as well for my turf type. Yours may be different. You want to spread the lawn feedings across the growing season, and not feed the lawn when it is about to go dormant, which is when the weather turns cooler for warm season grasses, and when the weather is getting hottest for cool season grasses. Some people feed their lawns twice a year, some 3-4-5 times a year or more, depending on how evenly you want to spread the nutrients through the growing season. However many times you plan on putting down fertilizer each year, figure out how much you need each year based on your turf type (Google "Lawn Care Academy" and look up your grass type) and divide that by how many times you plan to feed. If the Weed-N-Feed plus this is in the general correct range for that feeding, you can apply both. Generally I apply fertilizer throughout the year and put down some Ironite a few times to deepen the green in my lawn, and some Milorganite (some nitrogen and a lot of organic matter for the soil bacteria to feed on), and with a pre-emergent program (Prodiamine or similar product), that will keep most weeds away. 2, 4D and Quinclorac will take care of most weeds and crabgrass. There is a spectracide product that contains those along with Dicamba and Sulfentrazone. if these are safe on your turf type, I'd use that as a follow up to spot treat remaining weeds. Once the bulk of the weeds are managed, which will be 95% of them, I use an envelope moistener with a sponge and put glyphosate in it with some surfactant and apply directly to any remaining weeds to kill them. Stick with a proper pre-emergent program and that will keep 99% of the future weeds from popping up. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have some leftover. Can I use this in the spring |
Answer: | Thank you for inquiring about Scotts Turf Builder WinterGuard Fall Weed & Feed 3, 5,000 sq. ft. This may also be applied in late spring (April, May or June) when weeds are actively growing with temperatures between 60° - 90° but the nutrient content is specifically geared for a fall application. |
Question: | What size is this/coverage/square footage |
Answer: | 15M - "Covers up to 15,000 sq. ft." |
Question: | Can this be applied with the scotts winter guard? If it isn’t which should I apply first and how long should I wait in between |
Answer: | Recommend you verify with Scott’s on line or telephone Customer Service. My understanding is these products should not be used together in one season. One is fertilizer plus weed killer. The other just fertilizer. Use of both in a short interval will burn the turf. Again, check with the experts at Scott’s. |
Question: | What is the N-P-K of this product |
Answer: | 28-0-6 |

Tips For Lawn Care Success
First, regular feedings help your lawn look it’s best and provide the nutrients it needs to withstand the stresses of weeds, weather and activity. Secondly, after you mow leave the grass clippings on the lawn! This allows grass to use water more effectively. Finally, water; utilize nature’s sprinkler as much as possible. When you do have to water, do it between 6 and 10AM - less water is lost to evaporation and more reaches the roots.

User questions & answers
Question: | Would I have to apply seed if there wasn’t any grass |
Answer: | Assuming this is a joke. If you’re seeding don’t use any fertilizer to start. The grass seed needs to germinate before ever applying fertilizer. |
Question: | Can i use it with a tow behind sprayer? What would be the mix ratio |
Answer: | Not sure what the ratio would be but if you contact them I'm sure you'll get a prompt answer, customer service is great |
Question: | How much area covered by one bottle |
Answer: | Hi there, The bottle will cover up to 3,200 square feet. |
Question: | Can you also use on a garden |
Answer: | If you apply monthly. the lawn begins strengthening. In time you will notice less stress to your lawn from the heat and lack of water during the hot days. This is mainly due to the Organic kelp found in this product. Look at label and keep away from Muriate of potash if its in your Label. That is basically Chlorine and that will dry out your soil and kill microbes that turn organic waste into food for Roots. Does the same for Gardens Too |
