12 best fertilizer lawns

Fertilizing lawns is a crucial aspect of lawn care, promoting healthy growth and vibrant green grass. Here are key points related to fertilizing lawns:

  1. Types of Fertilizers:

    • Fertilizers for lawns come in various formulations, including granular and liquid. They contain essential nutrients like nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), commonly referred to as N-P-K ratios.Different formulations cater to specific needs such as promoting root growth, green foliage, or overall plant health.
  2. Application Timing:

    • Timing is essential when applying fertilizers to lawns. Spring and fall are common times for fertilizing cool-season grasses, while warm-season grasses are often fertilized in late spring or early summer. Understanding the growth patterns of your specific grass type helps determine the most effective timing.
  3. Grass Type Considerations:

    • Different grass types have varying nutrient requirements. It's essential to choose a fertilizer that aligns with the needs of the specific grass species in your lawn. For example, cool-season grasses like Kentucky bluegrass may have different requirements than warm-season varieties like Bermuda grass.
  4. Slow-Release vs. Quick-Release Fertilizers:

    • Fertilizers can be categorized as slow-release or quick-release. Slow-release fertilizers provide a steady nutrient supply over an extended period, promoting sustained growth. Quick-release fertilizers deliver nutrients rapidly but may require more frequent applications.
  5. Environmental Considerations:

    • Responsible fertilizer application involves considering environmental impact. Excessive use of fertilizers, especially in the form of runoff, can contribute to water pollution. Following recommended application rates and guidelines helps mitigate environmental risks.
  6. Soil Testing:

    • Conducting a soil test helps determine the specific nutrient needs of your lawn. This allows for a more targeted and efficient application of fertilizers, addressing deficiencies and avoiding over-fertilization.
  7. Proper Application Techniques:

    • Whether using granular or liquid fertilizers, proper application techniques are crucial. Spreading granular fertilizers evenly and watering thoroughly after application helps ensure uniform nutrient distribution. Liquid fertilizers may require dilution and careful application to prevent burning.
  8. Lawn Health Monitoring:

    • Regular monitoring of your lawn's health helps assess the effectiveness of your fertilization program. Adjustments can be made based on visual cues such as color, thickness, and overall vitality of the grass.

Remember to follow product instructions, adhere to local regulations, and tailor your fertilization approach to the specific needs of your lawn for optimal results in terms of health and aesthetics.

User questions & answers

Question: I’m still waiting on my order that was supposed to be here We’d
Answer: It's seasonal use and will state on the back of the bag directions for use.
Question: Can you use this in Florida
Answer: You can use a Scotts Drop Spreaders available thru amazon, that is what most folks do. I hand throw mine, but I have had years of experience and do it well. I'd say, for you, buy a spreader.
Question: is this product good for St Augustine grass for dallas tx, in month of May
Answer: Well, I'm not sure. I had not noticed it. I am a firm believer in Scotts products . I have seen the transformation of my yard from weed forest when we bought our home to luxury lawn. So I use them every year. I do go to the manufacturer site each year to assure I am using the right products at the right time. They may provide the information you want. I then go to Amazon to buy the product.
Question: What is the N-P-K on this product
Answer: Others are wrong.I use this every two months.my scotts mini broadcast at 2.5 setting.my yard is thick and lush.I also have St Augustine grass.st Augustine likes water but not sitting in it for long periods.it also likes fertilizer.I found the starter applied in the spring and the southern after that the rest of the year works fantastic.Do not use bonus s fertilizer.neighbors have had terrible results with that.As Efraim said do not go by recommend settings.go by half recommend setting.I found 2.5 best on broadcast scotts spreader.also use a liquid weed killer for Augustine grass and only treat problem areas.the grass will grow in thick and choke out future weeds.also at least once a year use a fungicide.scotts disease ex works great.all my neighbors have brown spots i do not.remember here in houston we have very sandy soil so fertilizers dissipate into soil quickly.other areas may require less fertilizing intervals as soil retention may be better.

Product features

Particle Size Matters

Unlike the pebble-sized particles in a typical 10-10-10 fertilizer that can be found at your local hardware store, PGF Balanced particles are extremely fine. In fact, the particles are so small, PGF Balanced provides more than double the coverage of your average granular fertilizer. Significantly better coverage ensures every square inch of your lawn or garden is receiving the nutrients it needs for an even feeding.

New or Established Lawns

PGF Balanced can be used any time during the growing season but is ideal for use in early spring and fall when high nitrogen levels are not as desirable. Lawns can be established or recently seeded. PGF Balanced can also be used during sod installation.

Gardens and Flower Beds

Gardens can benefit from this perfectly balanced formula by mixing the PGF Balanced fertilizer into the soil while turning or tilling at the beginning of the growing season. Continue with PGF Balanced applications every 3 weeks, or as needed.

Trees and Shrubs

Trees and shrubs in landscaped areas will appreciate a nutritional boost from PGF Balanced. For established plants, apply PGF Balanced one to two times each year at the base. For new trees and shrubs, work PGF Balanced into the soil when planting.

Application Recommendations

One 18 lb bag of PGF Balanced fertilizer will provide up to 5,000 sq ft of coverage. While this formula can be applied any time during the growing season, it is ideal for spring and fall applications. Be sure to sweep or blow off sidewalks and driveways as the added iron can leave rust marks. If you have left over product, seal the bag completely and store in a dry, climate controlled area.

User questions & answers

Question: said usually ships in 2 days please check and expedite this order when will this ship
Answer: Maxine, EcoScraps Berry Plant Food can be used on all types of edible plants.
Question: I have a fresh new lawn(4 weeks). I have cut twice and feel it could use something. Will this product harm my lawn being that its so new
Answer: All last year, I used this for strawberries I'm growing inside cinderblocks and it really helped them. I didn't realize at first how poor the soil that I planted them in was, and this kept them alive and well. I will say that it is a bit "slow acting" so it's best to add it before a problem starts and keep adding it every few months or so. Also, it works better when worked into the soil a bit, and not as a top dressing (other eco-scraps products suggested it could be used that way).
Question: Is this a fast or slow release nitrogen lawn food or a combination of both
Answer: Per back of bag: New plants: work 1-2" into top 6" of soil. Existing plants: work 1/4 cup into topsoil. Potted plants: 2 ½ tablespoons for 6" pot. 1 cup for 12" pot.
Question: What is the N-P-K ratio printed on the 15,000 sq ft bag
Answer: EcoScraps for Organic Gardening Berry Plant Food, when used according to label directions, is perfectly safe and effective on all edible plants, including blackberries!

User questions & answers

Question: It is ok to put Weed and Feed after putting this product but before 30 days are over. Says at the back to wait for 30 days before another application
Answer: You would want to wait the entire time before applying another product with fertilizer. If you have broadleaf weeds now, you can spot treat with Ortho Weed B Gon.
Question: I just applied Crabgrass preventer. How long must i wait to lay down seed to grow grass
Answer: In what I’ve read before, 6-8 weeks. At that point you should wait until fall, which is there ideal grass time in most climates. It gives the grass a chance to start growing on top, then winterize and grow strong roots so that spring will be awesome. About 3 years now I’ve been applying this strategy and find my grass is greener than all the neighbors. There is one neighbor who has a thicker lawn but he has a different slope in his yard and has been at it much longer. I will overtake him!
Question: How soon can I throw down some new seed? I would like more kentucky blue in my lawn
Answer: you have created a force field. only way is to put down new loam 1/2'' thick then seed . late august aerate lawn then seed,& do it like your feeding the chicken & those hens are hungry. next year you will not believe, keep your deck clean & blades sharp. GOOD LUCK
Question: Okay to use in August
Answer: I have Poa Annua and have been doing a lot of research on it. Many websites with information about Poa Annua say for effective control, besides Spring treatment it is good to put pre emergent down in August/September. Here is a quote from the Purdue University Extension website: "Poa annua is a winter annual that germinates in the late summer/early fall once soil temperatures fall below 70o F. Seedlings mature in the fall, overwinter in a vegetative state, and flower and produce seed in late spring and early summer." I just chatted with Scott's website and they said this product can be effective when used in this manner. I plan to apply it then AND next Spring. Most of the lawns in my development have been taken over by Poa Annua but I am still fighting the fight and hope to win or at least keep it to a minimum.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this product be utilized with the 7-1-2 Innova Organic Fertilizer
Answer: Yes definitely. 7-1-2 is an organic fertilizer which it would not burn your lawn.
Question: I'm working to correct my soil ph. it is very acidic and therefore having trouble taking up nutrients. would you recommend waiting until ph is fixed
Answer: Yes, we would recommend you to wait your pH back to the neutral state first before apply PGF. We would recommend you check out Humic acid and Innova organic fertilizer product.
Question: setting on my Scott's edgeguard for the 18 pound bag only got me coverage of barely 3,000 square feet. I don't see how that would treat 5k sq ft
Answer: Lower your spreader setting or walk faster. Either will thin out the application a bit for a broader coverage. I'm rather OCD and I use a lower setting and do a pass in one direction with half the bag, then put the other half in and go across the lawn at a 90 degree angle for a more even distribution. Also, I recommend buying the larger bag as it is cheaper per pound, then just roll up the top and tape it and stick it in the garage or shed for the next application. I first used this in 2020, and the larger bags were not available, which means I need to probably go ahead and start looking for some now. Look at big box stores over the winter when they are trying to clear shelf space for the holidays and you can find lawn care stuff frequently at reduced rates. This left darker green stripes on my lawn which wasn't the fault of the product, but my lawn was deficient in iron. If you have this happen, adding more iron should help even out the color. Ironite is one popular choice. There are also spray on liquid iron applications if you need a quick fix for a lawn party or something.
Question: Can i safely add this to my normal lawn care treatments? in other words, if i'm putting weed and feed down in may, can i also add this as well
Answer: Two partial answers....the real answer is maybe. Each turf type requires a certain amount of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, which are the 16-4-8, meaning if you had a 100 pound bag of this fertilizer, 16 pounds would be nitrogen, 4 pounds would be phosphorus, and 8 pounds would be potassium. Different turfs require different amounts of these nutrients each year. For example, my Zoysia requires 2-3 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft. per year, and the other 4/8 in the bag would be good ranges as well for my turf type. Yours may be different. You want to spread the lawn feedings across the growing season, and not feed the lawn when it is about to go dormant, which is when the weather turns cooler for warm season grasses, and when the weather is getting hottest for cool season grasses. Some people feed their lawns twice a year, some 3-4-5 times a year or more, depending on how evenly you want to spread the nutrients through the growing season. However many times you plan on putting down fertilizer each year, figure out how much you need each year based on your turf type (Google "Lawn Care Academy" and look up your grass type) and divide that by how many times you plan to feed. If the Weed-N-Feed plus this is in the general correct range for that feeding, you can apply both. Generally I apply fertilizer throughout the year and put down some Ironite a few times to deepen the green in my lawn, and some Milorganite (some nitrogen and a lot of organic matter for the soil bacteria to feed on), and with a pre-emergent program (Prodiamine or similar product), that will keep most weeds away. 2, 4D and Quinclorac will take care of most weeds and crabgrass. There is a spectracide product that contains those along with Dicamba and Sulfentrazone. if these are safe on your turf type, I'd use that as a follow up to spot treat remaining weeds. Once the bulk of the weeds are managed, which will be 95% of them, I use an envelope moistener with a sponge and put glyphosate in it with some surfactant and apply directly to any remaining weeds to kill them. Stick with a proper pre-emergent program and that will keep 99% of the future weeds from popping up.

User questions & answers

Question: when is best month to apply
Answer: Directions indicate early and late fall application of this product. There is another turf builder product with crabgrass control meant for early spring application.
Question: May I apply it now (today is June
Answer: If you apply this fertilizer that contain 34-0-10 then the nitrogen will stimulate top growth which is not what you want in the winter time due to freezing weather. It's better to apply like 10-2-7 in winter. That way the roots are stimulated and not top growth.
Question: Is it safe to apply this fall lawn food to newly sprouted grass seed? The grass is about 2 weeks old
Answer: Instructions say "apply to new seeded or sodded lawns only after the fourth mowing so I would say no do not apply. It also says not to add new seed or sod for at least one month after applying.
Question: What is the amounts of nitrogen, phosphours and potassium
Answer: 32-10-0 per back of bag - see pic for yourself

User questions & answers

Question: Should you water lawn after application in spring time
Answer: When I apply the three, I have just started with one right after the other. Then I water for just 10 minutes per zone ( how my lawn is set up). This is in addition to the regular watering, not instead. I always apply the day before a regular water day so it can settle in with the 10 minutes and the next day get it's full water. It has worked really, really well for me! I only do the three products once a year and then rotate the two each time after.... until fall. Hope this helps!
Question: will this fertilizer burn your grass without watering in
Answer: From what I can tell, the product is 100% natural. With any fertilizer or pesticides, I'd wait until it's dry regardless of any specifications from manufacturer. Whether it's the right amino acids for morning glorys, I can't answer to whether you'll have perfect results. But yes, it would work.
Question: Does this have phosphorus in it
Answer: I usually apply once during the early summer and early fall. We do not get much rain where I live and sometime I need to apply more often. Depending on your lawn condition (lots of rain), this should work well for you.
Question: Why does this product not have enough rating or reviews when it seems to have good NPK values with iron and up 3 months feeding
Answer: Hello, Yes absolutely, Our Lawn Energizer 32 ounce sprayer fertilizer can be refilled by our gallon Lawn Energizer Booster Fertilizer. You may use a funnel while pouring to prevent spillage. Great Question. Thank you for asking. Happy Green Grass :)

Answer: Not sure what the ratio would be but if you contact them I'm sure you'll get a prompt answer, customer service is great
Question: How much area covered by one bottle
Answer: Hi there, The bottle will cover up to 3,200 square feet.
Question: Can you also use on a garden
Answer: If you apply monthly. the lawn begins strengthening. In time you will notice less stress to your lawn from the heat and lack of water during the hot days. This is mainly due to the Organic kelp found in this product. Look at label and keep away from Muriate of potash if its in your Label. That is basically Chlorine and that will dry out your soil and kill microbes that turn organic waste into food for Roots. Does the same for Gardens Too

Question: How is it to be applied
Answer: Maryland passes law to reduce pollution from lawn fertilizer.
Question: Why does scotts turfbuildedr seem to hide the fertilizer grade (%n, p2o5 and k2o) on the turfbuilder products? the first thing one needs to know
Answer: I use this product by pouring into a 1 gal jug with about a half gallon of water. I shake it every few minutes to ensure the product fully dissolves. At this time I also water the gas for about 15 minutes. I then add the contents to my 4 gal sprayer with surfactant and more water. Spray using your normal pace to empty the contents on your measured sqft. After emptying, I wait 15 minutes and then water the lawn for 15 minutes.
Question: Can this apply on texas area sod augustine
Answer: The Miracle Gro Lawn food is in granules and no I don't think a spreader is a good idea because the pouches it comes in isn't very much. You could spread it with your hands though, say in a 20x20ft space and then saturate with water to dissolve the granules. I use Miracle Gro plant food that way.

Regularly fed lawns absorb water and nutrients better than unfed lawns. Use Scotts Turf Builder Southern Lawn Food to help your lawn be more efficient at using available water.

Tips For Lawn Care Success

First, regular feedings help your lawn look it’s best and provide the nutrients it needs to withstand the stresses of weeds, weather and activity. Secondly, after you mow leave the grass clippings on the lawn. This allows grass to use water more effectively. Finally water, utilize nature’s sprinkler as much as possible. When you do have to water, do it between 6 and 10 am - less water is lost to evaporation and more reaches the roots.
