7 best earthbox garden kits
EarthBox garden kits are a popular and innovative gardening solution designed to simplify the process of growing vegetables, herbs, and other plants in a contained and efficient manner. These kits are related to Fertilizers Plant Food, Soils Fertilizers Mulches, Gardening Lawn Care, and Patio Lawn Garden. Here's what you need to know about EarthBox garden kits:
Container Gardening: EarthBox garden kits are essentially self-contained, sub-irrigated planters designed for container gardening. They are ideal for people who may have limited space, poor-quality soil, or want a convenient and controlled way to grow plants.
Components: An EarthBox kit typically includes the following components:
- EarthBox Container: This is the main planter box, which has a built-in water reservoir and a cover.
- Aeration Screen: Placed above the water reservoir to prevent soil from clogging it.
- Mulch Covers: These cover the growing media and help retain moisture while preventing weed growth.
- Water Fill Tube: Used for easy watering and to ensure the water reaches the root zone.
- Fertilizer Strips: Pre-measured strips of fertilizer to provide essential nutrients to the plants.
Sub-Irrigation: EarthBox garden kits use a sub-irrigation system, where water is added to the reservoir at the bottom of the container. This water is then drawn up into the root zone as needed, reducing the risk of overwatering or underwatering. It helps ensure consistent moisture levels for the plants.
No Weeding: The mulch covers included in EarthBox kits help prevent weed growth, reducing the need for weeding and minimizing maintenance.
Space-Efficient: EarthBox garden kits are suitable for small spaces, patios, balconies, and even rooftops. They are a great option for urban gardening.
Plant Variety: You can grow a wide range of plants in EarthBoxes, including vegetables, herbs, flowers, and small fruiting plants. The kits are versatile and adaptable to various plant types.
Fertilization: The pre-measured fertilizer strips make it easy to provide essential nutrients to your plants. This helps ensure healthy growth and robust harvests.
Maintenance: EarthBoxes are relatively low-maintenance. Regularly check the water reservoir and refill it as needed. You may also need to replace the growing media after a few seasons.
Longevity: EarthBoxes are durable and can be used for multiple growing seasons, making them a cost-effective option for gardeners.
Benefits: Some of the benefits of using EarthBox garden kits include increased yield, reduced water consumption compared to traditional gardening methods, and the convenience of gardening in a contained system.
EarthBox garden kits are suitable for gardeners of all experience levels, from beginners to seasoned growers. They offer a practical and efficient way to cultivate plants and enjoy homegrown produce, even in challenging gardening environments.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I transfer two small tomato plants |
Answer: | 2 cu feet bag ....the directions specify |
Question: | can i start tomato seeds in these boxes or they only for existing plants |
Answer: | I think you need to use the plastic cover as it will keep the soil from drying out and it is an integral part of the earth box design. I am pretty sure the plants would not survive if the cover is not used. My tomato plant was so robust in the earth box that you could barely see the plastic cover. |
Question: | Can you plant lettuce and/or spinach |
Answer: | Box is at home but measurements are described on listing down on bottom |
Question: | what soil do you recommend buying |
Answer: | Try again! New organization. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone had luck not building a mound of soil (stop at planter height) and using organic mulch instead of the plastic cover |
Answer: | This planter is too small for even 1 regular tomato plant . I use mine for herbs. |
Question: | What is the difference between the organic and the standard fertilizer? Is one any better than the other? Would I have to buy soil to use with this |
Answer: | I believe that you could start seeds in the box by leaving the plastic cover off--mist the topsoil until germination takes place, then thin to a few plants per box--perhaps 2. Add the plastic cover. Tomato plants get very tall and usually require staking. Good luck! |
Question: | Does it have watering holes |
Answer: | Yes you can. Follow the diagram and it will show you what you can plant. In a junior it is mostly herbs or strawberries. Lettuce would be okay. The full-size earth boxes could hold at least 6 plants |
Question: | What is the difference between the organic and the standard fertilizer? Is one any better than the other? Would I have to buy soil to use with this |
Answer: | Garden soil with peat or peat substitute is good. Using plant food/fertilizer is a top treatment to the soil. Instructions should come with it. I have used earth boxes for years and love them |
Question: | Does this include 2 containers as it says in the top “2 planters” or just 1 planter which is shown “1 container” in the discription box |
Answer: | There is no tray to protect the floor. I think this box is generally used outdoors on decks or patio's. When you fill it , there is an overflow opening on the front. When the water reservoir is full, water will spill out the overflow. If you watch it carefully and shut the water off when you first see water in the overflow there will not be a problem. If you are worried about the floor, I would think you could get a shallow plastic storage container to put underneath. |
Question: | Why is this product advertised as "organic" when it is made of plastice |
Answer: | I grow early girl tomatos and English cucumbers in 2 separate boxes and live in the northeast.. I generally get around 30 cucumbers and 35/40 tomatos (depending upon the type of tomatos you grow). Taking into consideration that you have to spend additional money to the buy plants to grow in the box and how much money you would spend on the same produce at your grocer you could possibly break even the first year. Definitely by year 2 . |

User questions & answers
Question: | How does 8-3-5 fertilizer different from 7-7-7? Is it only for certain plants |
Answer: | You can certainly do that! It isn't our tried and true method, but we see a lot of EarthBox gardeners try out their own techniques and are successful! |
Question: | Is this for one or two earth boxes |
Answer: | You do have to buy your own potting soil unless you buy the really expensive version which ships complete with potting soil. If you want to grow organic veggies, buy that version. Otherwise, buy the standard which is cheaper. |
Question: | Does it contain any animal products |
Answer: | I'm not sure what you mean by watering holes. There is no drainage in the bottom. Drainage is afforded with a grate that's installed in the bottom of box. There is a reservoir that you will fill with water to keep your plants hydrated. |
Question: | What size cover is this |
Answer: | Yes you need to buy potting mix, but there are some kits sold on their website that include this. Be sure to buy potting mix that is for containers and not reg. soil that is meant for the ground. Potting mix is much lighter. As for the fertilizer, the difference is that it's organic vs reg, is the ingredients, organic fertilizer is more natural, non chemical. Standard fertilizer contains synthetic chemicals. It's really about what you prefer when it comes to the food you eat. I prefer all organic, so I bought the organic kits on earthbox's website that included everything I need. |
