13 best bermuda grass fertilizers

Bermuda grass is a popular warm-season grass used for lawns and sports fields due to its resilience and heat tolerance.Proper fertilization is essential for maintaining a healthy Bermuda grass lawn. Here's what you should know about Bermuda grass fertilizers:

  1. Nitrogen-Rich Fertilizers: Bermuda grass typically requires nitrogen-rich fertilizers to thrive. Nitrogen promotes leafy growth, which is important for a lush, green lawn. Look for fertilizers with a higher nitrogen content, often expressed as the first number in the N-P-K (Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potassium) ratio on the fertilizer label.

  2. Granular vs. Liquid Fertilizers: Bermuda grass can be fertilized using both granular and liquid fertilizers. Granular fertilizers are often more convenient for homeowners because they can be spread evenly over the lawn. Liquid fertilizers are usually faster-acting but may require more frequent applications.

  3. Seasonal Application: Bermuda grass has a growing season during the warm months of the year. Fertilize Bermuda grass in late spring to early summer when it's actively growing. Avoid fertilizing in the winter when the grass is dormant.

  4. Slow-Release Fertilizers: Consider using slow-release fertilizers for Bermuda grass. These gradually release nutrients over time, providing a more consistent supply of nutrients to the grass and reducing the risk of over-fertilization.

  5. Soil Testing: Before applying fertilizer, it's a good practice to conduct a soil test to determine the specific nutrient needs of your lawn. This can help you choose the right fertilizer and avoid over-fertilization, which can harm the grass and the environment.

  6. Phosphorus and Potassium: While nitrogen is crucial, Bermuda grass also requires phosphorus and potassium, which are represented by the second and third numbers in the N-P-K ratio. Phosphorus supports root development, while potassium helps with overall plant health and stress resistance.

  7. Follow Instructions: Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific fertilizer you choose. Over-fertilization can lead to excessive growth, thatch buildup, and increased susceptibility to pests and diseases.

  8. Watering: After applying fertilizer, be sure to water your lawn adequately. This helps the grass absorb the nutrients and prevents fertilizer burn, which can occur if the fertilizer remains on the grass blades without sufficient watering.

  9. Weed and Feed Products: Some fertilizers are combined with herbicides to control weeds while feeding the grass. If you have weed issues in your Bermuda grass lawn, consider using a "weed and feed" product that addresses both concerns.

  10. Consistency: Fertilizing your Bermuda grass lawn consistently and according to its specific needs will help maintain its health and appearance over time.

Remember that the specific fertilizer requirements for Bermuda grass can vary depending on factors such as climate, soil type, and maintenance practices. Conducting a soil test and consulting with a local gardening or lawn care expert can provide tailored guidance for your lawn's fertilization needs.

Answer: Not sure what the ratio would be but if you contact them I'm sure you'll get a prompt answer, customer service is great
Question: How much area covered by one bottle
Answer: Hi there, The bottle will cover up to 3,200 square feet.
Question: Can you also use on a garden
Answer: If you apply monthly. the lawn begins strengthening. In time you will notice less stress to your lawn from the heat and lack of water during the hot days. This is mainly due to the Organic kelp found in this product. Look at label and keep away from Muriate of potash if its in your Label. That is basically Chlorine and that will dry out your soil and kill microbes that turn organic waste into food for Roots. Does the same for Gardens Too

Question: How is it to be applied
Answer: You can use a Scotts Drop Spreaders available thru amazon, that is what most folks do. I hand throw mine, but I have had years of experience and do it well. I'd say, for you, buy a spreader.
Question: Why does scotts turfbuildedr seem to hide the fertilizer grade (%n, p2o5 and k2o) on the turfbuilder products? the first thing one needs to know
Answer: Well, I'm not sure. I had not noticed it. I am a firm believer in Scotts products . I have seen the transformation of my yard from weed forest when we bought our home to luxury lawn. So I use them every year. I do go to the manufacturer site each year to assure I am using the right products at the right time. They may provide the information you want. I then go to Amazon to buy the product.
Question: Can this apply on texas area sod augustine
Answer: Others are wrong.I use this every two months.my scotts mini broadcast at 2.5 setting.my yard is thick and lush.I also have St Augustine grass.st Augustine likes water but not sitting in it for long periods.it also likes fertilizer.I found the starter applied in the spring and the southern after that the rest of the year works fantastic.Do not use bonus s fertilizer.neighbors have had terrible results with that.As Efraim said do not go by recommend settings.go by half recommend setting.I found 2.5 best on broadcast scotts spreader.also use a liquid weed killer for Augustine grass and only treat problem areas.the grass will grow in thick and choke out future weeds.also at least once a year use a fungicide.scotts disease ex works great.all my neighbors have brown spots i do not.remember here in houston we have very sandy soil so fertilizers dissipate into soil quickly.other areas may require less fertilizing intervals as soil retention may be better.

Unlock Your Best Southern Lawn Any Season

When you feed with Scotts Turf Builder Southern Lawn Food, you’re building strong roots that can handle the stresses caused by activity and weather.

Help Your Lawn Absorb Water and Nutrients

Regularly fed lawns absorb water and nutrients better than unfed lawns. Use Scotts Turf Builder Southern Lawn Food to help your lawn be more efficient at using available water.

Tips For Lawn Care Success

First, regular feedings help your lawn look it’s best and provide the nutrients it needs to withstand the stresses of weeds, weather and activity. Secondly, after you mow leave the grass clippings on the lawn. This allows grass to use water more effectively. Finally water, utilize nature’s sprinkler as much as possible. When you do have to water, do it between 6 and 10 am - less water is lost to evaporation and more reaches the roots.

User questions & answers

Question: So anderson's innova 7-1-2 (soy meal) contains amino acids but andersons super juice 7-1-2 does not
Answer: Yes, Innova which is SOY based, granular, organic fertilizer has amino acids. Completely different product from the spray Super Juice.
Question: Cancel other service
Answer: Yes
Question: Could you spray this through a backpack sprayer
Answer: You could but we would not recommend.. here is why. 1) There is a good chance you’ll have clogs. They have TINY holes. 2) You’ll be putting down the mix in a very concentrated spray ratio of water / Super Juice. It’s better to use MORE water which will not only cover the blades of grass but also send some to the roots. Example: Many professional lawn chemicals such as pre-emergents give you recommended gallons of water per 1000 sq ft to use when applying. This not only prevents plant damage but helps deliver the chemicals to the correct areas.
Question: Full strength is .0437lb of n per 1k at a 14-2-4;half rate of 7-1-2 is .0219 lb of n per 1k. i need to apply near 1/8 lb of n per 1k is that
Answer: I have a 4500 sqft yard, the product states that it covers 42000 sqft. 42000/4500 means I can apply this to my yard just over 9 times. 9 applications * .14 lbs of nitrogen = 1.3 pounds of nitrogen for my entire yard for 80 dollars... definitely more expensive than, but i guess you're paying for the micros

How much water to use?

It does not matter if you use one gallon of water to apply or three gallons of water to apply.  You will still be applying the same amount of (dry mix) nutrients to the lawn.  The only difference is that you can take your TIME spraying it on and not be running around like a mad man out of breath at the end.

How much dry mix to use?

Most people will apply at a 14-2-4 ratio in the spring and fall, then switch over to the 7-1-2 during the summer months.  If you want to apply at a 14-2-4 ratio, use 1/4 of a bag.  You can also convert to CUPS if you want. 1 CUP of DRY mix will treat approx. 1500 sq ft at a 14-2-4 rate. If mixing at 7-1-2 ratio then one cup will treat roughly 3000 sq ft.

User questions & answers

Question: Can it be used on thin bladed fescue in the middle of summer when daily temps are over
Answer: That is a tough question as I do not have Fescue. However, I think that if you sprayed it in the evening as temps are going down and then give your lawn a good watering it should be okay. Or maybe pick an evening when rain is expected the next day. Just a thought.
Question: how often should I apply
Answer: You may apply once a month or as needed by nutrient deficiency. Always feel free to contact us directly with pictures and information on your grass type. We can help make a custom fertilizer schedule for you! :)
Question: Trying to figure out how many lbs of N this will put down per gallon. What is the weight per gallon of product or the lbs/n per gallon
Answer: From what I can tell from the product description, the product weight is 26.4lbs. This is consistent with some other products at 2.5gals (320oz). Doing the math, 26.4lbs/320oz=0.0825lb of product per oz X 0.15%N that will come out to 0.012lb of N per oz of product. So about 20oz of product per gal of water to get down 1/4lb N to 1000sqft.
Question: Can you use this on cool season grasses, like fescue, rye, and KBG mixes
Answer: yes works great on all grass types!

User questions & answers

Question: How many days before rain should this be applied
Answer: Scatter lightly. This stuff is great! And yes, water for about three days, not heavy, but enough. Then you'll notice a big difference. Good luck. My lawn has never been greener.
Question: Can i use 3-18-18 fertilizer, 0-0-25 lawn food, & growth booster w/ jonathan green 10-0-20 winter survival fertilizer or would that be too much fert
Answer: Thank you for your inquiry! GreenView Fall Lawn Food is intended for lawns and would not be what a shrub needs as far as nutrients. A shrub fertilizer would be a better alternative and would provide the information on the amount of fertilizer to use. Woodace 12-3-6 on our GreenView fertilizer site would be a suggestion. If you do not need this amount of fertilizer you can also use Natural Start by GreenView All Purpose Plant Food.
Question: Is this product clear
Answer: Thank you for your inquiry! The GreenView Fall Lawn Food is a straight fertilizer with no weed killer in the product. If you choose to apply a product to control weeds we would suggest a straight weed killer and nothing that is a weed and feed. A weed and feed product would have a fertilizer in it and you could potentially over fertilizer your lawn.
Question: Can I add the soil loosen solution to this and spray them together
Answer: GreenView 2131173 GreenSmart Enhanced Efficiency Fertilizer Fall Lawn Food 22-0-10

The Andersons

Based on 2 reviews Check latest price

Product description

  • Lower nitrogen strength allows you to apply more particles per square foot.
  • Slow release and feeds for up to 8 weeks.
  • Humic DG (humic and fulvic acid) which helps enrich your soil and allows plants to process nutrients better.
  • Not sold in California and South Dakota.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this product be utilized with the 7-1-2 Innova Organic Fertilizer
Answer: Yes definitely. 7-1-2 is an organic fertilizer which it would not burn your lawn.
Question: I'm working to correct my soil ph. it is very acidic and therefore having trouble taking up nutrients. would you recommend waiting until ph is fixed
Answer: Yes, we would recommend you to wait your pH back to the neutral state first before apply PGF. We would recommend you check out Humic acid and Innova organic fertilizer product.
Question: setting on my Scott's edgeguard for the 18 pound bag only got me coverage of barely 3,000 square feet. I don't see how that would treat 5k sq ft
Answer: Lower your spreader setting or walk faster. Either will thin out the application a bit for a broader coverage. I'm rather OCD and I use a lower setting and do a pass in one direction with half the bag, then put the other half in and go across the lawn at a 90 degree angle for a more even distribution. Also, I recommend buying the larger bag as it is cheaper per pound, then just roll up the top and tape it and stick it in the garage or shed for the next application. I first used this in 2020, and the larger bags were not available, which means I need to probably go ahead and start looking for some now. Look at big box stores over the winter when they are trying to clear shelf space for the holidays and you can find lawn care stuff frequently at reduced rates. This left darker green stripes on my lawn which wasn't the fault of the product, but my lawn was deficient in iron. If you have this happen, adding more iron should help even out the color. Ironite is one popular choice. There are also spray on liquid iron applications if you need a quick fix for a lawn party or something.
Question: Can i safely add this to my normal lawn care treatments? in other words, if i'm putting weed and feed down in may, can i also add this as well
Answer: Two partial answers....the real answer is maybe. Each turf type requires a certain amount of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, which are the 16-4-8, meaning if you had a 100 pound bag of this fertilizer, 16 pounds would be nitrogen, 4 pounds would be phosphorus, and 8 pounds would be potassium. Different turfs require different amounts of these nutrients each year. For example, my Zoysia requires 2-3 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft. per year, and the other 4/8 in the bag would be good ranges as well for my turf type. Yours may be different. You want to spread the lawn feedings across the growing season, and not feed the lawn when it is about to go dormant, which is when the weather turns cooler for warm season grasses, and when the weather is getting hottest for cool season grasses. Some people feed their lawns twice a year, some 3-4-5 times a year or more, depending on how evenly you want to spread the nutrients through the growing season. However many times you plan on putting down fertilizer each year, figure out how much you need each year based on your turf type (Google "Lawn Care Academy" and look up your grass type) and divide that by how many times you plan to feed. If the Weed-N-Feed plus this is in the general correct range for that feeding, you can apply both. Generally I apply fertilizer throughout the year and put down some Ironite a few times to deepen the green in my lawn, and some Milorganite (some nitrogen and a lot of organic matter for the soil bacteria to feed on), and with a pre-emergent program (Prodiamine or similar product), that will keep most weeds away. 2, 4D and Quinclorac will take care of most weeds and crabgrass. There is a spectracide product that contains those along with Dicamba and Sulfentrazone. if these are safe on your turf type, I'd use that as a follow up to spot treat remaining weeds. Once the bulk of the weeds are managed, which will be 95% of them, I use an envelope moistener with a sponge and put glyphosate in it with some surfactant and apply directly to any remaining weeds to kill them. Stick with a proper pre-emergent program and that will keep 99% of the future weeds from popping up.
