12 best sweet corn seeds

Sweet corn seeds are an essential component of any vegetable garden, as they are the starting point for growing one of the most popular summer vegetables. Here's what you need to know about sweet corn seeds in the context of gardening and lawn care:

  1. Varieties: Sweet corn seeds come in a variety of cultivars, each with its own unique flavor, texture, and growing requirements. Some common sweet corn varieties include Sugar Buns, Silver Queen, Honey Select, and Ambrosia.

  2. Planting Time: Sweet corn is typically grown in the warm season and should be planted when the soil temperature reaches at least 50°F (10°C). In most regions, this means planting in late spring to early summer.

  3. Soil Preparation: Sweet corn thrives in well-draining, fertile soil. Prepare the soil by adding organic matter, like compost, to improve its nutrient content. Ensure proper drainage to prevent waterlogging.

  4. Spacing: When planting sweet corn seeds, space them about 9-12 inches apart in rows that are 30-36 inches apart. This spacing ensures adequate room for the plants to grow and pollinate.

  5. Sunlight: Sweet corn requires full sun, which means at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day. Choose a sunny location in your garden for planting.

  6. Watering: Sweet corn needs consistent moisture, especially during the critical pollination period. Water deeply and regularly to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

  7. Fertilizing: Use a balanced fertilizer with adequate nitrogen to promote healthy growth. Fertilize the soil before planting and again when the plants are knee-high.

  8. Mulching: Apply mulch around the base of the sweet corn plants to help conserve soil moisture and control weeds. This is particularly important in hot and dry climates.

  9. Pest and Disease Management: Keep an eye out for common pests like corn earworms and aphids. Employ organic or chemical control methods as needed to protect your crop from damage. Also, practice crop rotation to prevent soil-borne diseases.

  10. Harvesting: Sweet corn is ready for harvest when the kernels are plump and exude a milky substance when pierced with your fingernail. Harvest promptly, as the sugars in the kernels start converting to starch after picking.

  11. Storage: If you have excess sweet corn, you can blanch and freeze it for long-term storage. Alternatively, enjoy it fresh by using it in various recipes, like corn on the cob, corn salad, or corn chowder.

  12. Seed Saving: If you want to save sweet corn seeds for the next growing season, allow some ears to fully mature on the plant. Once dry, remove the kernels, and store them in a cool, dry place.

By following these guidelines, you can successfully grow sweet corn in your garden, enjoying the delicious, sweet, and fresh taste of homegrown corn during the summer months.

User questions & answers

Question: What’s the nutritional content of this hybrid corn
Answer: Dear Mr, We do not have specific measurements for this variety, but sweet corn is high in carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins and minerals. - Burpee
Question: How to harvest for seeds
Answer: Dear Mr, If you want to harvest the seeds for planting you will want to allow they to dry fully on the plant. This is a hybrid variety, however, so the seeds will not produce the same plant, as it was produced from two different parents. Otherwise you can harvest the ears when they are purple and scrape the seeds off to make corn dishes. - Burpee
Question: What year are these packets produced for
Answer: I have been using this for several years. Had to buy a new supply last year and will be using that again this year. I plant in large pots on the south facing side and get corn every year. Because this is in the front of the house, they are more decorative and have other plants with them. (3 sisters type plantings). Current packet was for 2019 with a sell by date of 11/19
Question: Is it round up ready
Answer: Hey Staci, No, this corn is a hybrid sweet corn bred through traditional breeding methods for the home gardener. It is not GMO (none of our products are GMO) and not resistant to Roundup. - Burpee

User questions & answers

Question: Is this corn round up ready
Answer: It is not roundup ready.
Question: Central Fl. , 4/8/20 , 90 degrees. Is it to hot to plant this type of corn in Fl
Answer: Corn loves heat! "Sweet corn is a warm-season crop and must be planted after the soil warms and there is no more danger of frost. If you have room, plant again when the first corn plants have three to five leaves. This usually takes 2 to 3 weeks". I'd water daily to keep the seeds and soil moist (not sodden) at least until the seeds sprout. Also it's recommended you plant sweet corn in blocks or "short rows" instead of long spaced out rows to facilitate cross pollination within the sweet corn patch. Good luck and happy sowing & growing!
Question: Made in USA
Answer: Yes
Question: Is this corn GMO
Answer: My package doesn't say so.
