13 best japanese maple trees
Japanese maple trees, scientifically known as Acer palmatum, are popular ornamental trees prized for their stunning foliage, graceful form, and vibrant autumn colors. Here is some information about Japanese maple trees related to Trees, Plants Seeds Bulbs, Gardening Lawn Care, and Patio Lawn Garden:
Varieties: Japanese maple trees come in a variety of cultivars, each with its unique characteristics. Some popular cultivars include the Bloodgood, Emperor I, Coral Bark, and Red Dragon.
Foliage: One of the most distinctive features of Japanese maples is their intricately lobed leaves. The foliage can range from deep red and burgundy to green and variegated. The leaves are often deeply cut, giving the tree a delicate and lacy appearance.
Size: Japanese maples come in various sizes, from small dwarf varieties that reach only a few feet in height to larger trees that can grow up to 25 feet tall. The size and shape of the tree can be influenced by pruning and training.
Growth Habit: They have a slow to moderate growth rate and a graceful, weeping or upright habit. Some varieties have a cascading or pendulous form, making them ideal for adding an elegant touch to gardens or as focal points in landscapes.
Sun and Soil Requirements: Japanese maples thrive in well-drained soil with good organic content. They prefer partial shade to full sun, although some varieties can tolerate more sun than others. Providing some shade during the hottest part of the day can help protect their delicate foliage.
Seasonal Interest: Japanese maples offer year-round interest. In spring, they produce small, inconspicuous flowers. During the summer, their vibrant foliage provides a striking display. In the fall, the leaves often turn brilliant shades of red, orange, or yellow, making them a standout feature in the garden.
Care and Maintenance: Proper care includes regular watering to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Pruning can help maintain their shape and remove dead or crossing branches. Mulching around the base of the tree helps retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
Disease and Pests: Japanese maples are generally hardy, but they can be susceptible to aphids, scale insects, and fungal diseases. Regular inspection and early intervention can help prevent these issues from becoming severe.
Landscape Use: These trees are versatile and can be used in various garden settings. They make beautiful focal points, work well in containers, and are often used in Japanese-inspired gardens. They can also be planted as a hedge or in a group to create a stunning display of color and form.
Symbolism: In Japanese culture, the Japanese maple tree is highly regarded and symbolizes beauty, grace, and the changing seasons.
Japanese maple trees are a beloved addition to gardens and landscapes, valued for their aesthetic appeal and the peaceful ambiance they bring to outdoor spaces. Proper care and attention can help ensure their health and longevity, allowing them to thrive and continue to enhance the beauty of any garden or patio area.

User questions & answers
Question: | I purchased these seeds previously but didn't receive growing instructions. How can I have those sent to me |
Answer: | I had instructions on the seed package. Do not use miracle grow use organic soil. I soaked the seeds in hot water for 48 hrs. Change the water every few hours . You want to soften the shell of the seeds. After 2 days I scratched the shell seedlings with a nail file just enough to expose the seed inside then I put them in started pots using organic soil. I put them all on a tray and covered them with plastic wrap to give it a green house effect & they get moisture that way. |
Question: | How long to grow |
Answer: | I would assume a couple of months to get stable/usable seedlings. I haven’t started mine yet, I was going to use the natural grow cycles for maples in our area. After that I can only guess at least another year or more to get something you can start shaping. |
Question: | Do the seeds need stratification |
Answer: | Yes they do need to be refrigerated for 60 days then you can plant. It says you will get better results |

The art of bonsai begins with a tree! This appealing germination kit gives the bonsai enthusiast everything needed to start a tree from the very beginning — from seed. That means total control for shaping the tree into an utterly unique bonsai masterpiece! This kit is stocked with Japanese Maple seed — a tree species known for its pleasing bonsai qualities and suitability for shaping. 100% guaranteed and perfect for both the novice and bonsai expert!
About Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum): One of 21 species of Maple native to Japan, Japanese Maples have the most airy and delicate aesthetic of all Maples. Though no species has produced as many varieties, our "common" Japanese Maples have not only an uncommon grace and beauty, they are more rugged (withstanding more sun and wind), faster growing, and more drought-resistant than named forms.
The leaves of Japanese Maples are 2 to 4 inches long with 5 to 9 deeply cut fine-toothed lobes, and are the source of the Japanese common name for the species, "Kaede" (meaning "frog paws"). The slow growing Japanese Maples stay fairly small (usually around 25 feet tall), and provide year-round interest. Young spring growth is glowing red; summer's leaves are soft green; fall foliage is scarlet, orange, or yellow; and slender, leafless branches in greens and reds provide winter appeal. Hardy enough to succeed in most climates, Japanese Maples prefer filtered sunlight and little wind.

User questions & answers
Question: | where is the ebook? I got my seeds today but I cant seem to find the download button |
Answer: | Hey there! Since you are starting your trees from seed, it will take them quite a bit of time to grow into mature trees. You can begin maintenance pruning as early as a few months but it will be at least a year before you are able to begin structural pruning and using wiring techniques to shape your bonsai tree. With proper care and maintenance, you will be able to enjoy your bonsai trees for many, many years. Feel free to reach out to us directly with any questions that you may have throughout your growing journey and we'd be happy to help! - Ava@ShopGardenRepublic |
Question: | How long before trees mature enough for prunig?r pruning |
Answer: | Hey there! You can use either a Bonsai specific soil mix, we recommend a mix of Akadama, pumice, and lava rock in a 2:1:1 ratio, or any all-purpose soil as long as it has nutrients added. Akadama is a Japanese clay with a gritty texture that helps absorb more water while the lava rock allows more drainage. This mixture will require less watering for you since the Akadama ratio is higher. You can also use any sort of potting soil as long as it has nutrients for germination to get your seeds started and then re-pot them into the Akadama mix later on once they've sprouted and grown a few inches. I hope that this helps! Feel free to reach out to us directly with any other questions you might have and we would be happy to help. Kind regards, Ava@ShopGardenRepublic |
Question: | What kind of potting soil should I prepare for these seeds to germinate |
Answer: | Hi there! The stratification method that we've found to be the easiest is to soak all of the seeds in hot water for 16-24 hours and then plant immediately into moist, not overly wet, nutrient-rich soil. For the Delonix Regia seeds, you can either clip the rounded end of the seed or use a piece of sandpaper to sand down the rounded end prior to soaking. This will help increase the chances of germination by removing the outer layer of the seed so the sprout can emerge easily. There are a ton of different stratification methods out there, so you can also do a bit of research before planting your seeds to see what works best for you. You could even apply different methods to the seeds to see which ones yield the best results! The most important factor for successful germination is to keep the soil warm and moist during the germination periods, which will be listed on the back of each seed packet. Feel free to reach out to us directly for help during your growing journey and we'd be happy to keep you growing in the right direction. - Ava@ShopGardenRepublic |
Question: | Are there instructions on for each tree (stratification, scarification, etc |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this grow in Hawaii zone 11a |
Answer: | I think it would depend on the type of maple, seller usually suggest where to grow purchased maple. If it should be full sun or partial shade. It's the first time getting Kamagate maple and got a little tip burn from summer heat. I think it will do better in the cooler months and I placed under a tree. Maple is still living and I have had it for couple months. Only heard of a few people growing maples in Hawaii and hard too purchase here. |
Question: | Is this already potted |
Answer: | Was not potted and was poor quality, plant died shortly after it was potted. |
Question: | How tall and wide is the plant at the time you will ship |
Answer: | Mine was only about 12 inches tall and width was not anything, it was sort of a twig. It has doubles in size since spring and started its branching |
Question: | Are these deer resistant |
Answer: | Deer will cause some problems for many shrubs. If deer are around you can use repellants. Search on U-tube for solutions. |

Question: | Mine did not come with instructions. Where can I get them |
Answer: | Ours didn’t come with instructions or food. I had to contact the company thru Amazon. |
Question: | Is this okay for north eastern climates |
Answer: | I live in New England and we are growing ours indoors. I planted all 4 varieties on October 15th 2020 and only have had success with 2 of the 4 . Here we are at almost 2 months later and I can see what looks like a 1 1/2 inch weed growing (the weed looking growth showed itself about a month in) and I am hopeful that they somehow transform into 2 trees in time. I am disappointed that nothing happened with the other 2 varieties. |
Question: | Do I put all of each kind of seed in the pot and thin once sprouted? Or do I put one seed per pot and save others, just in case |
Answer: | I think all in one pot. I think the sprouts intertwine to make the trunks thicker |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you plant those in the ground in Massachusetts |
Answer: | I believe so, but only once the ground is warmed up in late spring...mine do very well outside, in the winter, here on the east coast they go to sleep at the first frost, the leaves fall off but they will come back in the spring...we have a huge one and a smaller one on the yard, minimal care, just prune a bit once the leaves are off. I tried growing them in the house also, as smaller plants, no luck with that |
Question: | How does this plant come? Is it an actual plant or seeds or bare root |
Answer: | I received a small tree with leaves and branches, over 24" tall, root with soil was in small plastic pot. Mine is planted and appears to be thriving. |
Question: | Do you fertilize if so how much and when |
Answer: | I do not fertilize. I mulch and water. In the summer it takes a lot of watering the first several years to get plants established and the mulch helps the plant stay moist longer and keeps the weeds to a minimum. |
Question: | What kind of Japanese Maple is this |
Answer: | This is a red maple that does not grow does not get any higher you receive it as a stick you think it’s a joke I’ve had it for several months if not years it’s ridiculous do not purchase |
