12 best unknown shade grass seeds
Unknown shade grass seeds do not refer to a specific type of grass seed but rather a generic term used when the exact species or variety of grass seed is not known. These seeds are typically sold or used when someone wants to establish grass in a shaded area of their lawn or garden but may not have specific information about the type of grass that will thrive in that particular environment.
In such cases, gardeners often opt for shade-tolerant grass seed blends that are designed to grow well in low-light conditions. Some common grass types that are known for their shade tolerance include:
Fine Fescue: Fine fescue grasses like creeping red fescue, chewings fescue, and hard fescue are excellent choices for shaded areas. They are known for their ability to grow well in low-light conditions.
Kentucky Bluegrass: Certain varieties of Kentucky bluegrass, such as shade-tolerant cultivars, can also adapt to shaded environments. However, they may require more maintenance and care in such conditions.
Perennial Ryegrass: Some types of perennial ryegrass are known for their shade tolerance and can be included in shade grass seed blends.
Poa Supina (Supina Bluegrass): Poa supina is a shade-tolerant grass species that performs well in areas with limited sunlight.
When purchasing unknown shade grass seeds, it's important to check the product label or description to see if it contains any of the above-mentioned grass types or if it's specifically designed for shade tolerance. Additionally, following proper planting and maintenance practices, such as providing adequate water and soil preparation, can help ensure the success of your lawn in shaded areas.
Remember that the success of your lawn will depend on various factors, including the specific conditions of your shaded area, climate, and local soil conditions. It's always a good idea to consult with local gardening experts or extension services for advice tailored to your region.

Question: | What kind of grass is this? Would like to see the back of the bag to see |
Answer: | How do I take a picture? There are 9+ ingrediences. I love the grass. Thick and a beautiful shade of green. That's about all I can say. I love it and it was my first time planting grass seed. I'm very pleased with the grass. |
Question: | What variety of grass seed is in this mix (i.e. %s |
Answer: | Hi, I am so I can't give you percentages of mix. The seeds are covered with a blue coating of fertilizer, which stays on for about 5 days even watering 3 times a day. This also keeps the birds from eating 20% of it. This is the 5th bag I have ordered as I have 1/3 acre of all weeds and dirt when I recently bought my house. It is an excellent blend and covers very well and spreads out and fills in. I have large areas that get 90% shade and it grows almost as fast as the seeds in full sun. Very happy with this seed. Can't tell you the blend, but it looks beautiful and no weeds at all. The grass comes up fast and full. I think You would be very happy with this product. Sincerely, Mark |
Question: | Is this grass okay for Arizona,s dry climate |
Answer: | No. The grass is similar to a winter rye grass that that does OK in the cooler winter months, but died in Texas as soon as it got hotter and dry. I would not recommend this grass for any southern hot and dry climate. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone tried growing this in southern Idaho |
Answer: | Not sure, but you may ask golf courses there... |
Question: | Would I be able to get a Phytosanitary certification on this product |
Answer: | It's not an import, and you'll only need it if you're exporting to another country. |
Question: | What type of zoysia is it? That question was not answered |
Answer: | Zoysia grass. The kind Scott sells. |
Question: | Is scotts zoysia grass ok for central il? neighbors appear to have it (telltale yellow in winter). i plan to seed into fescue/ bluegrass w/ 5-6hr sun |
Answer: | It will be probably be ok in Illinois. I have it in PA and it does fine. But it does turn white in early winter and stays that way till May till all of the dead grass disappears. The advantages in my opinion far out way the that. They are, when it fully takes hold, the thickness, slow growing, drought resistance, and it chokes out weeds because it is so thick. However I did not have good luck with this seed and planting plugs are a pain in the but. Hope this helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | can this be used in hydroseeder |
Answer: | Not familiar with a hydro seeder so I cannot answer that. |
Question: | How long it can grow after plant |
Answer: | WwR, it will take up to 21 days for all the grass seeds in the Scotts EZ Seed Patch and Repair Sun and Shade to germinate. |
Question: | Can this be spread in the fall |
Answer: | What Zone you are in. If you are in the North, probably not but better wait till late Winter or early Spring. However I had bad experience with Scott on this Bermuda Seed package. If you read carefully, the 10 lb package actually has less than one lb of seeds. Small percentage is fertilizer. 99% are mulch which you can purchase it much less price. It also depends how many sq. ft to plan to cover. This 10 lbs package covers less than 200 sq.ft. It also stated gauantee to germinate in any temperature, even exreme heat, it did not happened that way. |
Question: | Does this grass reproduce or spread |
Answer: | No, Tall fescue is a "bunch grass" and does not spread. Over the years a healthy "bunch" will get a bit bigger to help fill in, but not really spread |

Prep, Apply, Water
Scotts EZ Seed is a revolutionary seeding mix that takes care of the seed for you, so you can grow thick, beautiful grass anywhere!* Scotts unique growing material absorbs water like a sponge, expanding to surround the seed in a moist, protective layer. Just prep the ground, put it down, water and let it go to work!
*Subject to proper care.
Prep
Prepare the area you want to grow grass by removing dead grass and loosening hard soil to help tiny seedlings root.
Apply
Evenly apply EZ Seed so the area is mostly covered, but bare ground is still visible, so that seed can reach the soil. The mulch will expand 4x upon watering to help cover the seed and keep it moist (use half as much for thin areas). Only apply the recommended amount so that seedlings have enough space to access water and nutrients. The seed germinates best when daytime temperatures are between 60°F and 80°F.
Water
A deep and thorough watering is the key to success. Gently water the area until EZ Seed is completely saturated and no more water is being absorbed (this may take several minutes). Avoid pooling water. When EZ Seed begins to turn light brown, it's time to water again. Keep kids, pets and lawn mowers off newly planted seedlings until the grass is 3 inches high.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the advantage of Scotts exclusive grass seed coating?
A: Scotts WaterSmart PLUS Coating Technology absorbs water, feeds and protects your newly planted grass seed.
It absorbs twice as much water, and holds it twice as long, as uncoated seed to help prevent the seed from drying out – even if you miss a day of watering.
It feeds with essential nutrients that jumpstart growth, resulting in taller, thicker, greener grass.
It protects with a fungicide to help keep seedlings safe from harmful diseases that can attack newly planted areas.
Q: How long does it take for my newly planted grass to begin growing?
A: Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Dense Shade Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns will begin to grow in 6-14 days, but can take 30-60 days to become established depending on seasonal conditions. Make sure you continue to water as directed.
Q: How much do I need to water my new grass?
A: Watering is crucial for seeding success. Water daily or as needed to keep the soil surface moist until the seedlings reach at least 2 inches tall.
Q: When is the best time to plant Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Dense Shade Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns?
A: Cool-season grasses grow best when temperatures are between 60-80°F. Early fall is the best time to seed because of its shorter days, cooler nights and heavier dews. Your most successful seeding time is right around Labor Day. Seeding 2 weeks before or after that easy-to-remember holiday gives your new seedlings time to build strong roots before the winter. Spring is also a great time to plant cool-season grasses because of its moderate temperatures and heavier rainfall.
Q: How soon can I mow after planting new grass?
A: You can mow the seedlings when they reach 3 inches in height.
Q: When can I use weed killers and/or weed preventers on my new grass?
A: If you want to prevent weeds from invading while growing new grass, we recommend using Scotts Turf Builder Starter Food for New Grass + Weed Preventer. Never apply weed preventers to your lawn before planting grass seed unless they have been designed to be used when seeding.
All weed control products are different, but in general, it is recommended to wait until the new grass has been mowed at least 4 times before using a crabgrass preventer or other weed control product (unless the product is designed to be used when seeding). Always refer to the product label for specific information related to weed control products you are using.
Q: What types of grass seed are contained in Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Dense Shade Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns ?
A: The Dense Shade Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns contains specially selected seed varieties.
Tall fescue is a wide-blade grass that grows in clumps, has deep roots and grows in both areas of sun and shade. Tall fescue thrives in high-traffic areas and has low water requirements.

Answer: | That depends on your water quality. |
Question: | What is in the mix? Specifically what and in what percentages. I wonder why this information isn't given |
Answer: | These do not filter as well as expected. Have used throughout the summer here in Phoenix, AZ (since June 10th, 2020) for my misting system. Use 1-2 times a week (mostly just once a week). Water is still "hard" and leaves white spots/drips on furniture/tables/chairs/etc. I will try another inline filter next year. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this grass get too much sun? Some parts of my lawn get full sun while others very little and I'd like to use one type for overseeding |
Answer: | I have a small area (about 12x15) that gets very little sun due to trees and shrubbery. I tried this grass seed twice with no luck. However, to be fair, even other shade grass seeds didn't do well there either so it may work fine somewhere else. |
Question: | Does it contain Kentucky Blue Grass |
Answer: | It's tall fescue & kentucky mostly tall fescue |
Question: | Is this suitable for Seattle washington area |
Answer: | I used it in Anchorage Alaska and though it took a little longer to initially sprout (probably due to temps) it has done really well and is now the most dense patch and green area of of grass in my lawn even though it is in the shade and so far year 1 seems to be winning against the chick-weed. So I plan on spreading some across my entire lawn next year hoping to thicken it up. |
Question: | What type of grass seed is this? Centipede, st augustine |
Answer: | Mixture of perennial rye,fescue. |

Frequently Asked Questions
What month is best to apply bare spot repair mix?
The best time to repair bare spots in your lawn will depend on the type of grass and climate in which it is being planted. Most warm-season grasses should be planted in late spring to early summer, while cool-season grasses are better repaired in the fall. However, before repairing your bare spots, we recommend that you ensure that soil is healthy. Patchy spots are sometimes indicative of unhealthy soil. A frequent cause of this can be from pet urination.
How do I fix bare spots caused by dog urine?
If the bare spot was caused by dog urine, water thoroughly prior to planting. Flushing the area will dilute the concentrated salts and help the seed fully establish.
Are One Step Complete products harmful to pets?
We have no reason to believe that our One Step Complete products are harmful to pets. It includes fertilizer so we recommend that the product is watered in and has thoroughly dried before allowing pets to re-enter the area.
Step 1: Prepare
Remove debris, then rake the soil to loosen and smooth the top layer.
Step 2: Apply
Spread seeding mix approximately 1 cup per sq. ft. everywhere thick, beautiful grass is desired.
Step 3: Water
This is the most important step! Keep the soil moist by watering daily (twice a day if you have to) until grass sprouts and reaches about 3" tall.

Question: | It is not clear to me just what is lncluded. Is it 1 item or 2 and just what of each |
Answer: | 1 item |
Question: | Can you apply in fall in the deep south or should i wait till spring? thanks |
Answer: | You should be able to apply it in the fall as long as you are watering sufficiently. People often make the mistake of not watering plants just because it's cool. Fall planting would actually give the plants more time to get started. I planted Bermuda grass with my centipede knowing that centipede "sleeps, creeps and leaps" and takes a number of years to get thick and established enough to crowd out other weeds and grasses. |
Question: | Does this contain fertilizer ? If so, what is the Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potassium equation |
Answer: | Just seed from what I could tell. Mine didn't grow tho, and I tried twice. |
Question: | how long do I wait to planr seed afte using a weed and feed product not designed for new seed |
Answer: | I have read 3-4 days |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this grass annual or semiannual |
Answer: | I just spread it on soil that was very sandy and watered it in. I think it will do well in any soil as long as it is covered lightly with dirt and kept moist. |
Question: | is fescue a perennial seed |
Answer: | It really depends on how thick you sow it. I did an area about 12'x4' plus a smaller area 6'x3'. It came up fairly thick and did ok until late summer. The next spring it was pretty thin. This was the only seed I've had any luck with under 50 year old trees, but it took a lot of watering to get it started. I just decided it wasn't worth the cost and effort after planting it two years in a row. |
Question: | Will it grow well in sandy soil? I live in florida. Zip code |
Answer: | It work ok for me but still not great my area has very limited sun. Less than the 3 hours a day limit that that use as a guide. So I am still looking for a good seed in full shade my self. Were you have zero sun i would say it wont work maybe someone else has had better success than I ? |
Question: | Has anyone used this in Texas? Any luck with it |
Answer: | The one I got from Amazon was 14.64% Endeavor II Tall Fescue, 14.63% Faith Tall Fescue, 14.62% Gazelle II Tall Fescue, along with 4.85 Wendy Jean Creeping Red Fescue. 0.01% were weed seeds with no noxious weeds found. 50% of the ingredients were the coating, 1% inert, and 0.25% was other crop. The batch I got in a 3-lb bag from my local Ace Hardware was 17.06% Endeavor II Tall Fescue, 17.05% Duration Tall Fescue, and 14.63% Gazelle II Tall Fescue. The 7-lb bag there was 17.06% Gazelle II Tall Fescue, 17.05% Endeavor II Tall Fescue, 9.74% Faith Tall Fescue, and 4.89% Dynamic II Tall Fescue. I'm undecided as to how I feel about that bit of creeping red in there, but I'm a little happier with the locally bought mixes versus the one from Amazon. |
