I found that from a distance of 12" the light from 1 light fixture for each 10" x 20" seedling tray was inadequate resulting in significant "plant streching" that led to each seedling toppling over. Answer:	I don't know? I kept my grow light about 9" to 12" inches above the plants. They survived a very cold winter inside. Of course, outside in the summer, they thrived.

Question:	ok whats the secret to auto timer? i plugged in unit, seems to operate as it should,turned on 12hr timer,turned off went to bed, did not turn back on
Answer:	It took two attempts for me but timer is now working. Turn light on at time of day you want lights to come on each day. Then touch the timer button to desired length of time (once for 3 hrs, twice for 8 hrs, etc). Timer should then be set.

Answer:	I honestly don't know what that recommended distance is. I can tell what is working for me. I have a 3 tiered shelf for my plants. One arm is positioned about within a few inches from the top shelf. The second shelf is violets and the arm is 4-6 inches away. The third shelf is plants that tolerate low light and the arms is about 6 inches, but more too the side. All of the plants are doing well. I really think it depends on the type of plants.
