14 best seeds needs
"Seeds needs" refers to the specific requirements and conditions that seeds require to germinate and grow successfully. It is a critical aspect of gardening, whether you are involved in indoor gardening, hydroponics, traditional gardening, or lawn care. Understanding and meeting the needs of seeds is essential for ensuring healthy plant growth. Here are some key factors related to seeds' needs:
Moisture: Seeds need moisture to initiate the germination process.Adequate moisture softens the seed coat and triggers the embryo to start growing. The level of moisture required can vary depending on the type of seed.
Temperature: Different plant species have specific temperature requirements for germination. Some seeds require warm temperatures, while others need cooler conditions. Providing the appropriate temperature range is crucial for successful germination.
Light: While some seeds require light to germinate (e.g., lettuce, petunia), others prefer darkness (e.g., carrots, radishes). Understanding the light requirements of the seeds you are planting is essential for proper germination.
Soil or Growing Medium: The choice of soil or growing medium is crucial for seeds' needs. It should be well-draining, loose, and nutrient-rich to support healthy root development. In hydroponics, seeds are often started in a soilless growing medium like rock wool or coco coir.
Aeration: Proper aeration of the soil or growing medium is essential to ensure that oxygen reaches the seeds and developing roots. Overly compacted soil can hinder germination.
Nutrients: Although seeds contain their initial supply of nutrients, they will require additional nutrients as they grow. Fertilization with a balanced nutrient solution is necessary for hydroponic systems, while traditional gardeners may amend the soil with organic matter or fertilizers.
pH Level: The pH level of the soil or nutrient solution plays a critical role in seed germination and subsequent plant growth. Different plants have varying pH preferences, and it's important to maintain the appropriate pH range.
Seed Depth: Planting seeds at the correct depth is crucial. Some seeds need to be sown deep in the soil, while others should be sown just below the surface.
Humidity: Maintaining a suitable level of humidity around the seeds or seedlings can improve germination rates and prevent drying out.
Airflow: Good air circulation helps prevent mold and fungal issues that can affect germinating seeds.
Container or Tray: When starting seeds indoors, using seed trays, pots, or other containers with adequate drainage is important.
Timing: Planting seeds at the right time of year for your region and following the recommended planting schedule for specific plants is essential for successful growth.
Protection from Pests and Diseases: Monitoring for pests and diseases and taking preventive measures, such as using organic pest controls or fungicides, can protect emerging seedlings.
Hardening Off: Before transplanting seedlings outdoors, they need to be gradually acclimated to outdoor conditions in a process called "hardening off."
By understanding and addressing these "seeds needs," gardeners can significantly improve the chances of successful germination and healthy plant growth, whether they are engaged in indoor gardening, hydroponics, traditional gardening, lawn care, or patio gardening.

Answer: | I live in SoCal too: I bought a few common milkweed which grew well and self-seeded but since I wanted more I collected a lot of seeds which I had no trouble germinating and have planted out 90 all of which are now starting to flower early Feb - are they the highest quality? I think not so also for variety am buying seeds but growing my own from seed wasn't a problem and I never put them in the fridge. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How many packets are included for |
Answer: | Hi Joshua. YES! This is 25 lbs of 100% black oil sunflower seeds. You won't be disappointed. Wagner's is a really good brand and Amazon is the best with prime membership. Sincerely, Diane E. |
Question: | How many pounds/ounces of seeds is this? I’m looking to fill 25ml glass jars for wedding favors |
Answer: | Hello I am a backyard birder and would go thru one bag every 2 weeks. I believe that they put expiration dates on their products. I have been purchasing these Sunflower seed from Amazon and they have always been fresh. They always have an expiration date on their bags. I purchase other seeds from this manufacturer. I order the Nyjer seeds from them and currently have a bag with an expiration date of 9/20/19. Seeds should always be kept in cool places. I have approximately 53 goldfinches, a lot of morning doves, Baltimotr Orioles hummingbirds etc. I have never had any problems with any seeds I purchased from this manufacturer |
Question: | Could I fit the larger seeds through a jar opening that is 1/2 inch |
Answer: | The only answer that makes sense to me is this: The shipping weight is in metric units where a metric pound is 500 grams. The "Wagner" weight is in imperial units. where an imperial pound is approx. 450 grams. So a metric shipping weight of 18 pounds (where a pound is 500 grams) is the equivalent of approx. 20 lbs in imperial units (where a pound is approx. 450 grams. Thus the metric shipping weight can be less than the imperial "Wagner" weight. |
Question: | Does "Intended for the current and the following growing season." mean |
Answer: | Don't know why it's now more per-pound in the larger bag. Doesn't make sense. When I bought it, the 40-pound bag cost less than it does now, maybe around $35 (don't remember the exact price). It's sounds like either Wagner's thinks consumers are dumb or that the company has just mispriced it. If the pricing continues as is, I'd just buy two 25-pound bags. That's a dollar a pound, instead of $1.125 a pound, and the 25-pound bags are easier to handle, too. Assuming you have Prime, shipping is free. I'd also check the price at your local Lowe's, Home Depot or similar -- sometimes they have better deals than Amazon. |

Question: | How many seeds should you plant in a small pod |
Answer: | these are not recao seeds we don't know what they are.! If you have the real recao seeds plant as many as you wish as they are really small and take up 40 days to sprout. Also very fussy about environment!! |
Question: | This is actually what we call "Shadow Benny", correct |
Answer: | Yes, it's Shadow Beni, Chadon Beni, Recao, Culantro, [xyz] Coriander...all the same |
Question: | Hi-can I grow these indoors anytime of year |
Answer: | Oh yes definitely, that's how i'm growing them currently. You'll need a good grow light as well as a seed warmer to get them started. Also you'll need to keep the temp above 75 for optimal growth. If at all possible, arrange a sort of semi-shade for them - even though they're under a grow light - as they tend to do better in slightly shaded areas. Good luck! |
Question: | How many packets are included |
Answer: | I would not know because I still have not received them. Don’t buy’ |

Though most people consider the Mexican Sour Gherkin (Melothria Scobra) to be a part of the cucumber family, it actually belongs to the Melothria family. Though it looks much like a tiny watermelon, and goes by nicknames such as cucamelon, mouse melon, and little watermelon, this cute little Mexican Sour Gherkin was more or less adopted into the honorary title of cucumber. As the name suggests, the Mexican Sour Gherkin is native to Mexico and Central America, and had been a staple of the Mexican and Central American diets since pre-Columbian times. It was the French botanist, Charles Victor Naudin, who was the first person from the modern world to have described them in 1866.
- Quality Cucamelon seeds packaged by Seed Needs. All Tomato seeds sold by Seed Needs are Non-GMO based seed products and are intended for the current & the following growing season. All seeds are produced from open pollinated plants, stored in a temperature controlled facility and constantly moved out due to popularity.
- Cucamelons have the taste of a cucumber that is citrusy and tangy rather than sweet. This is a slow growing vine plant that can grow up to 10 feet under the right conditions. The fruit can grow to be 1 to 2 inches, but should be cultivated before it reaches 1 inch to prevent the fruit from becoming too seedy if used for cooking.
- The vine also produces small yellow flowers and does well climbing up trellises, taking about 60 to 70 days.
- Compared to cucumbers, the Mexican Sour Gherkin is more resistant to pests and tolerant to drought and mild cold (but not frost). You can treat Cucamelon as a perennial, and though the fruits are not particularly high yielding, they produce their fruits yearly.
- Each seed packet measures 3.25" x 4.50" in dimension. The front displays a colorful illustration of the flower and the back displays detailed sowing instructions to grow them.

User questions & answers
Question: | Over how small of an area should these be cast to allow enough room for all of them to grow and blossom well? 100 sq ft, 10 sq ft or |
Answer: | The rule of thumb is 50 - 70 seeds per square foot. So, 30,000 seeds is perfect for 500 square feet. However, I always assume that there are a number of seeds that will not germinate. So, I use this size for my 250 square foot area. |
Question: | How many packets of seeds are included in this item |
Answer: | One package. It is a mix of seeds . They are in good shape and the delevery was fast . |
Question: | How many guest favors can you make out of these seeds |
Answer: | You mean before of after planting? I am thinking I wouldn't want to divide to more than 1000 seeds for a person (30) , but you would probably want to add more filler. We planted these between the bottom of a retaining wall and a fence so we wouldn't have to mow. I started on outsides and planted more every few weeks (working in ). This made a "V" shape of flowers and blooms spring through fall. |
Question: | How many seeds did you put in a hole |
Answer: | U didn't put them in a hole just raked soil and spread. Them when. They bloom I'll transplant some of them |

Question: | How Much Protein Per Serving |
Answer: | Vegetables DO have protein in them. I looked up the nutrition info on Romaine lettuce - in one 85 grams (approx 1 1/8th cups) and there is 1 gram of protein in that amount, among other nutrients. However - protein is not the only necessary nutrient that you need ... google search the items you are interested in - I use "nutrition information in XXX" and the information comes up and many sources provide information on all of the nutrients from that item. Healthy eating!!! |
Question: | Another company told me I could grow lettuce inside if I started w a greenhouse, but to not attempt iceberg. are there others i should avoid |
Answer: | Don't waste your time growing iceberg lettuce it has no nutrients . Grow at this time kale, spinach, swiss chard. These do well in cold weather. Some lettuce does ok now but don,t expect everything to grow even in a greenhouse. I have a permanent greenhouse and I won't start it outside or in the green house. I start inside until it is hardy enough. Although I love seeds needs company, these seeds did not grow and I am an experienced gardener. |
Question: | Are these heirloom? Can I take the seeds after they bolt |
Answer: | Yes these are heirloom. I grew them in my aero garden, and they all sprouted in just two days ! I got many cuttings from them over a period of 3months before I replanted. I can’t answer the second question, as they didn’t bolt. You won’t be disappointed with these lettuce seeds. |
Question: | are these seeds heat tolerant |
Answer: | Warm temperatures and humidity shorte seed life. If you are asking about the plants themselves, lettuce tends to grow best between 45 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Hot weather will make them bitter and bolt to seed. |

Black Seeded Simpson
A proven winner, with a delicate flavor and bright green curly leaves, this heirloom variety has been a favorite for over 150 years. Simpson is well adapted to a wide range of climates and is still the best for early spring sowing. This variety of lettuce is suitable for both garden sowing and container planting. The secret to producing sweet, crisp leaves is plenty of water and fertilizer. Harvest as soon as the leaves are big enough for your use. Use scissors to snip off desired amount, and watch the plant continue to produce. For a seemingly endless supply of summer goodness, plant successive crops every few weeks.
Iceberg
Iceberg Lettuce is an heirloom variety, which dates back to the late 1890's. It's crisp leaves range in colors from dark green to light green, sometimes turning almost white as you reach the center. This variety is excellent for salads & fresh burgers, and is one of the most popular selections for many produce markets, & supermarkets alike. It mixes well with Romain, carrots, cabbage and other salad, crop additives. The plants will mature in a matter of 75 days, producing large, 8 to 10 inch, round heads.
Lollo Rosso
Who says Italian food must include pasta? With Lollo Rosso (Lactuca sativa) lettuce, you can have healthy, colorful, and delicious Italian fare in your salad. Not only does it make your salad beautiful, Lollo Rosso provides Vitamins A and C, folate, and iron. According to University of Glasgow scientists, it also has 100 times the antioxidants as common lettuce. In addition, the quercetin in Lollo Rosso leaves act as a natural antihistamine to relieve allergy and asthma symptoms.
Oakleaf
Oakleaf is a great selection to add in a variety of salads. The crops remain tender and tasty throughout heat and drought and are also quite attractive as well. The rosette shaped heads will display tightly packed, green, oak leaf shaped lobes. They grow to a mature height of roughly 8 to 12 inches tall, spreading a good 6 to 12 inches in diameter. Each crop will be ready for harvesting in roughly 30 days for baby sized leaves, and around 60 days for mature leaves.
Parris Island COS Romaine
Parris Island COS is a heirloom variety that was introduced in the 1950's by Ferry Morse seed company. The sweet and delicious leaves make the perfect additive to any salad. The upright leaves are rather heat tolerant and this variety is slower to bolt than other Romaines. Parris Island COS is usually ready for harvesting within 65 to 70 days after first sprouts appear.
Prizehead
Prizehead is a heirloom variety that produces loose-leaf heads in a brilliant combination of green and maroon colors. The leaves are tender, with a frilly texture. Prizehead goes great in salads to add a bit of color, before a large meal. Prizehead Lettuce, like all lettuce is an annual crop. These annuals grow quickly from freshly harvested seeds, producing heads of delicious leafy greens. This variety is best established in early Spring, or in the Autumn season, since it grows best in cooler weather. Prizehead is slow to bolt, but usually bolts quicker with warmer weather.
Red Romaine
Red Romaine is a heirloom variety that has been passed down from generation to generation. Like most lettuce varieties, it goes great in salads, adding a tart flavoring, with a mild crunch. The leaves are green to red, resembling the Lollo rosso variety. Red Romain prefers a cooler season, and will develop the best flavor and color within the Spring season, and in the early Months of Autumn.
Ruby Red
Ruby Red is a delicious heirloom that produces semi crispy, ruby red leafs. The heads form much like romaine, in an upright formation, with it's stems leading down to it's loose core. Ruby Red is an early variety that is ready for harvesting in roughly 40 to 53 days. It's early harvest makes it a perfect choice for Northern gardens, with shorter growing seasons.

User questions & answers
Question: | What time of year did you plant these and did you plant directly outdoors |
Answer: | I planted them in the fall, but I live in Hawaii. Also, climate change, I feel, affected my success. It would sprout, and either it would down pour for days, drowning the fragile shoots or slugs attacked the babies. I’ve tried only twice. The weather is very dreary right now, raining, barely sun. Maybe I’ll try again in a couple weeks. |
Question: | How much water do these need |
Answer: | when you first planted i watered them everyday for half hour for two weeks. |
Question: | What is the square footage covered by the bulk Crazy Mix Cosmos seeds |
Answer: | Alot I can tell you that 6 seeds covered about 6 ft. These flowers get over 5 ft tall and 2 or 3 ft wide with tons of flowers, very airy looking. |
Question: | what is the approx weight for this package of 7000 seeds |
Answer: | I would estimate it at 1.5 ounces. It's incredibly light. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the germination percent on the seeds |
Answer: | 100 percent so far. |
Question: | Hi, Can these be grown in pots |
Answer: | I can’t speak for this particular brand of seeds but I have been growing beets in containers for three years now. I use everything from felted planting bags to the large plastic buckets found at Target and party supply stores. My felted bags are from Amazon. I started with 10-gallon bags and got 20 gallon the next year. After each growing season I empty the bags, machine wash and hang dry. I’ve been using some for three years now with no problem of bag integrity. The party tubs are deeper than the bags. They also give you some control over drainage. On the other hand, exposure to sun and Southern California summer heat makes them brittle so the length of useability can be a factor. I may try 5-gallon buckets from a home improvement store. I never said but with the plastic buckets I drill holes in the bottom and sometimes on the edge where the bottom and side come together. Check out nursery containers young trees are sold in. Good luck. Homegrown beets are one of those gardening surprises. They do taste even better than store-bought. |
Question: | Are these considered heirloom? are they non-gmo |
Answer: | If you don't sign a contract to buy seeds, they are not GMO. GMO seeds are not available to retail consumers, only commercial farmers. If your planting less than 40 acres, you won't be buying GMO seeds. |
Question: | Are the different varieties separate in individual packets |
Answer: | No |

That's right, you guessed it, your favorite bath sponge is actually a Gourd! Luffa Gourds can be grown from freshly harvested Luffa aegyptiaca seeds in the Summer for an Autumn harvest. Luffa Gourds are primarily grown on a trellis in order to save on gardening space, since the fruits aren't very heavy. The outer shell is dark green, while it's inner core is soft and string like. Peeling the outer shell away will expose the usable bath sponge that you know and love. The plants can grow anywhere between 6 to 12 feet long, and grow to a mature height of about 24 to 30 inches tall. The leaves resemble that of a Pumpkin plant, and each vine will develop yellow flowers, prior to your Luffa Gourd fruits formation.

- Luffa Gourds can be harvested within 90 days after the first sprouts appear.

A Note From The OwnerGreetings to all of my valued customers and online guests!
My name is James, and I am the owner of Seed Needs LLC. First and foremost, I'd like to thank everyone for checking out the site. I'd also like to thank you all for your continued interest in our seed products as well. I can't express how grateful I am to have such wonderful customers.
My dream of becoming an entrepreneur and someday owning my own business came to me early on, at the age of only 15 years old. It all started with juggling high school with a part time job, as well as managing my own online shop. As time went on, I quit my part time job and began to focus solely on Seed Needs. Eventually I listed to Amazon, and to my surprise, customers loved my seed packets and seed products. From that admiration I was driven to better my products and services even further.
Through the years, I have gained so much knowledge, not only from the farming and seed industry, but from all of you as well. I have taken constructive criticism and turned it into the products that you now see today.
"The sky is the limit, said those who never dreamt of reaching for the stars."
- James Ev

User questions & answers
Question: | Just received the pods plant food and domes. where am i supposed to place the pods? no container came with it. did i get a shorted kit |
Answer: | The seed pods go in the Tray Deck of your Aerogarden. Our Aerogardens all come with a free seed pod kit. Please reach out to our Customer Service Team on our website if you feel that you are missing an item from your order. |
Question: | I have a three pod Aero Garden. If I purchase the 7 pod kit, how do I store the remaining pods until future use |
Answer: | I, too, have a 3 pod aero garden & I purchased a 7 pod kit. Since the pods remain unopened and are tight inside the pod, I have left them alone until I needed another one, which I did the other day. Nothing was wrong & it germinated beautifully. I had no problems and, hopefully for you, you shouldn't either. |
Question: | Will these pods work in the kids’ aerogarden version |
Answer: | The kids garden, the Herbie, does not use the plastic basket portion of the seed pod. You can use these seed pods, just remove the sponge from the basket, then insert the sponge into the Herbie. |
Question: | What can I do when the pod fails to grow |
Answer: | I found that when I use filtered water one in every 12 pods fail. Aerogarden recommended DI water, tried that for a year and it went from 1 in 12 to 1 failure in 3. Went back to filtered water and success rate is back to 1 failure in 12. DO NOT USE DI WATER!!! As for the ones that do fail. Don't bother trying to have them replaced. You will get sick and tired of constantly calling Aerogarden. Also, they will send you a single loose replacement (not a sealed kit). By the time you get it, it will have been through the ringer with the seeds having fallen out and not be likely to grow. I think the reason the fail rates are so high is because they are making these things in Mexico with nearly zero quality control. These days I reuse my plastic holders, buy the growing medium online (50 for $10), buy my own seed, and grow my own. Guess what? Hardly ever have a failure anymore! |
