13 best soils tests

Soil tests are essential tools for gardeners and lawn care enthusiasts to assess the health and quality of the soil in their gardens or lawns. These tests provide valuable information about the soil's pH level, nutrient content, and other key factors that can influence plant growth and overall garden health.

Here are some key aspects related to soil tests and the tools used for them:

  1. Soil Test Kits: Soil test kits are readily available and come in various forms, from basic home testing kits to more advanced options. These kits typically include components for collecting soil samples and testing them for various parameters.

  2. pH Testing: One of the most critical aspects of soil testing is measuring the soil's pH level.Soil pH affects nutrient availability to plants. A pH level between 6.0 and 7.0 is generally ideal for most plants. Test kits usually include pH testing solutions or strips that change color based on the soil's acidity or alkalinity.

  3. Nutrient Analysis: Soil tests also assess the nutrient content of the soil, including essential elements like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Knowing nutrient levels helps gardeners determine whether fertilization is necessary and in what quantities.

  4. Organic Matter and Texture: Soil tests may provide information about the soil's organic matter content and texture. Soil with good organic matter content tends to be fertile and able to hold moisture well. Texture information helps gardeners understand if their soil is sandy, loamy, or clayey, which can affect drainage and plant selection.

  5. Microbial Activity: Some advanced soil tests can assess microbial activity in the soil, providing insights into the overall soil health. Beneficial microorganisms play a vital role in breaking down organic matter and improving nutrient availability.

  6. Sampling Tools: To conduct a soil test, you'll need basic hand tools like a trowel or soil auger to collect soil samples. These samples are typically taken from various locations within the garden or lawn and mixed together for an accurate representation.

  7. Interpreting Results: Once you've performed the soil test, you'll receive results that indicate the current conditions of your soil. These results will guide you in making informed decisions about soil amendments, fertilization, and plant selection to optimize your gardening efforts.

  8. Frequency of Testing: It's advisable to perform soil tests periodically, typically every 2-3 years, to monitor soil changes and adjust your gardening practices accordingly.

By conducting regular soil tests and using the information provided, gardeners and lawn care enthusiasts can create a more suitable environment for their plants, resulting in healthier and more productive gardens and lawns.

Advantages

• Measures and reports your plant-available nutrient levels

• Uses your field-moist soils in its most natural state to measure nutrient levels

• Recommendations are based on your soil’s nutrient release matched to plant uptake requirements

Why Are MySoil’s Recommendations So Effective?

It’s not the total amount of nutrient in the soil, but that soil’s ability to release those nutrients in forms and amounts that match plant uptake demands during the time they are growing.

Science

Soils often contain an abundance of nutrients that may or may not be in available forms to plants during the time they are growing. Conventional soil analysis methods measure nutrient levels by drying and grinding your soil and extracting nutrients with different chemicals. This is still a "guess" with regards to what chemical extraction may best represent the available nutrient levels in your soil. MySoil uses the customer's field-moist soil to adsorb available nutrients without using chemicals that can over or underestimate nutrient levels and soil release. The MySoil Analysis Method does not require your soil to be dried and ground, two processes that change the physical and chemical characteristics of the natural soil.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it work well? I'd like to buy one for the light meter
Answer: I purchased mine for testing the spoil pH and watering needs and they both seem to be very accurate. I do not know how accurate it is for light testing. I do not know what your application is for, but if it's to see how much light is present for growing a garden, then you need a minimum of 6 hrs of sunlight a day, preferably 8. Of course it also depends on what you are trying to grow, some plants need much more than others.
Question: If my plant falls under the 0-3 red category, does that mean I only water it when the meter indicates that’s where the soil is at
Answer: Hi! I have a moisture meter and its saving me from over watering which I am prone to do. Some plants like to be moist and some are drought resistant and can tolerate a lack of water and others like flowers need to be water more often because they wither quickly. if you have soil that is a mixture of clay then the clay will hold moisture and the plant won't need water as often. You can go on line and there is a wealth of information including how to water and care for any plant you have. I also sent a soil sample off to the North Carolina Dept of Agriculture so they could tell me about fertilizer. Good luck. Its all on line.
Question: Do you always have to wait 10 minutes before checking a reading, and when you toggle to a different reading does the 10 min start over
Answer: Yes, you always have to wait 10 minutes before checking the readings. When you switch to a different reading, start again in 10 minutes.
Question: I can't get the pH to work, but light and moister do work. What am I doing wrong
Answer: Since soil most often is in/close to neutral state (with pH value of 7), when you use it to test the pH value of soil, it is highly likely that you find the needle in display window stay still (because the default pH value is set at somewhere between 7 and 8) . The needle will not swing substantially unless the meter in soil with strong acidity or alkalinity. Customers sometimes are misled by this appearance and hence regard the tester as a defective unit by mistake. Here are the steps of How To Use this soil meter: Step 1: Gently wiped the probes all the way up and down with dry cloth a few times before use Step 2: Push the switch to MOIST or PH or LIGHT position Step 3: Stick the probes into the soil 4-6 inches (2/3 of the probes) or more deep Step 4: Adjust the position of the probe until the pointer on the dial swing slightly Step 5: Note moisture/pH/light level in the dial Step 6: Remove probes from soil and wipe clean with dry cloth after each use Tips: This soil meter is designed to measure moisture and ph level of soil, so it CAN ONLY be used in soil, it CANNOT be used to test any liquids, such as pure water, lemon juice, vinegar and so on, or the probes may be damaged.

User questions & answers

Question: Is there an additional cost to mail in or is postage included in the price of the kit
Answer: dont wast your time with this company or its product. i never received the results back and they didnt return any calls or mssgs.
Question: Can this be used to determine "soil percolation" capabilities of a person's yard ? Can it tell makeup % of clay, sand, loam, organic
Answer: I don't think so. If you would like to know about the percolation rate of the soil in your yard, the most reliable method is a field measurement where you dig a hole in the soil and fill it with water. Return every few hours to monitor the rate at which the water level goes down. I recommend staking a cheap yard stick in the hole. It is relatively simple to calculate the percolation rate in inches/hour. Ideally, this would be done when the surrounding soil is moist, so you should refill the hole a few times and use the percolation rate from the third filling. Alternatively, wait for the rainy season. If you would like to know the distribution of particle sizes in your soil, you might try a basic "jar test". All you need is a jar and water. This will give you a very rough idea about the texture of your soil.
Question: Does the envelope need a stamp
Answer: Yes, you will have to buy a priority mail stamp for about seven bucks
Question: Does it test for sulfur
Answer: Thank you for your question about the Whitetail Institute Laboratory Soil-Test Kit. According to the manufacturer, "No, this test does not test for Sulfur, but it does test for other nutrients like Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K), Calcium (Ca), and Magnesium (Mg)." Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns. Thank you again, and have a wonderful day!

Ensure a Successful Food Plot

Testing your soil is the MOST IMPORTANT STEP for ensuring food plot success. It ensures the most attractive, nutritious, and productive food plot possible.

Whitetail Institute's Soil Test Kit is very easy to use and everything that you need is included.

Furthermore, you will receive your results by mail or email within one week. The results are very easy to understand as well.

Learn About Your Soil

Not all soils are the same. Some soils are heavier, some are lighter, and some hold lime and fertilizer longer than others.

Most high-quality forages grow best in soils with a neutral soil pH between 6.5 and 7.5. If soil pH is below that (and most fallow soils are), nutrients are bound up in the soil and the plants cannot access them. In this instance of the pH being below 6.5, you would need to add lime to raise the soil pH level. Without a Soil Test Kit, you would not know how much lime and fertilizer are needed to ensure the greatest health of your forage.

Make Informed Decisions from the Results

Different types of forages have different fertilizer requirements.

The scientific precision of the Whitetail Institute's Soil Test Kit allows you to make informed decisions on how much fertilizer and which kinds are needed.

This is because a laboratory soil test such as Whitetail Institute's Soil Test can tell you very precisely what your existing soil nutrient levels are. You will be able to see how much Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K), Calcium (Ca), and Magnesium (Mg) are in your soil. With all of this information, you will be able to move forward with confidence knowing you are really providing your soil with what is needed so that in turn your soil can provide you with the best possible forage.

Save Money and Time

Whitetail Institut's Soil Test Kit tells you exactly how much lime and fertilizer is needed for optimum results (saving you the time you might have spent trying to guess how much is needed) and makes sure you don't buy more than you need.

It also ensures that your money is not wasted.

For example, let's say the soil pH in your plot is 5.0, which is highly acidic. If the soil pH is below 6.5 then the nutrients in the soil are bound up and the plants cannot access them. If you fertilize and plant without adding lime to raise the soil pH first, the plants will only be able to access about half of the nutrients in the fertilizer you put out. That means that however much you spent on fertilizer, you just wasted half of your money. A soil test can prevent this from happening.

User questions & answers

Question: I have 4 disctinct areas around my house where i'd like to test the soil. does this kit have enough to test all those areas
Answer: "40 tests" means that it has enough materials for 10 tests each for pH, N, P, and K.
Question: whats , N, P, K
Answer: N=nitrogen P=phosphorus K=potassium.the same order on a bag of fertilizer. 10 10 10 means.10(N) 10(P) and 10(K)
Question: If used properly, is there enough reagent (solutions) to conduct the claimed amount of tests? Many complaints about how many tests
Answer: There is not enough solution to do the number of tests claimed. The pH test solution appears to yield a result consistent with my pH probe. The remainder of the tests yielded no results, ie. there were no color changes present to compare against the chart on the nitrogen or phosphorus tests, there was no cloudiness detected on the potassium test. These results were inconsistent with prior soil testing and my crops show no signs of the deficiencies that would be present if the tests had been accurate. I had purchased this test kit in 2014, I think, and it had appeared to work accurately. The kit I purchased in 2017 performed completely differently. I won't be buying this kit again.
Question: Where can I get the replacement chemicals and how much do these cost with shipping and handling
Answer: I've looked everywhere and you can't find any replacement chemicals for this set.

User questions & answers

Question: what does "plug and read" mean? I'm wondering if there are no batteries, does this have to be plugged in, does it charge from an outlet
Answer: Hi, After dipping your test strip into the soil/water mix the test strip pads should match one of the vertical columns on the color chart which will correspond to a given pH number. If you are have trouble interpreting the results we are glad to take a look at a picture. You can reach us using the contact information on the box that the test strips came in or through the Amazon messaging system. We do this all the time for customers. We also have example test pictures and a troubleshooting guide on our support site listed on the booklet and label. Please know that we stand behind our products so rest assured we will make sure you are satisfied or we will refund your purchase. Best, Angus
Question: Soil ph is reading an 8 on every soil does anyone have issues with the soil ph. i even tried in a soil that's ph is
Answer: The Garden Tutor Soil pH Test Strips are calibrated for soil testing only, so just dipping the test strips into straight water won't give you an accurate pH reading of the water. The strips use reagents that react to the presence of dissolved solids/minerals found in soils.
Question: My meter just came in and it is showing wildly different readings when I test the same exact spot
Answer: Hi, Thank you for your question. The Garden Tutor pH test strips are designed to help you zero in on your soil's pH level. So if you are getting truly inconsistent readings, it could be that there are contaminants in your soil that are skewing the results. You should also double-check your results and make sure you are following the test instructions and interpreting your results correctly. The goal is to find the column on the color chart that best matches the colors on the pH strip from top to bottom. This can take a little work. If you think you are getting inconsistent results or want help with interpretation, please reach out to us from our Amazon seller profile and click "Ask a question" We can respond with details on how we can help interpret your results. Please know that we always stand behind our products, so if you are not satisfied, we will make sure you get a full refund Best, Angus
Question: Can you use this also to check the ph in water before you water your plants or just soil
Answer: Thank you for your excellent question. The pH of the water can affect your results. In areas that have excessively hard water (water with lots of minerals in it), the pH of the water will be strongly alkaline (pH of 8.5 and higher), and this can impact the reading you will get from your Garden Tutor Soil pH Test Strips. The impact is typically about .5 of a point for pH, but the drift can be up to 1 point. For most gardeners getting a pH reading within .5 of a point is sufficient. Most municipal tap water has a pH of 6.5 to 8.5, so using tap water will be OK but may cause your reading to be off about .5 of a point. If you want to get the best reading possible from your test strips, it's a good idea to use fresh unopened distilled water. You can check the manufacturing date on the unopened distilled water container, and if it is under 30 days old, it should be about a 7.0 pH. When using distilled water, you can be assured that you will be getting the most accurate soil pH reading possible. One of the main reasons distilled water is used for soil pH testing is that it has a low "buffer capacity" and will not meaningfully impact the actual pH reading of a soil sample. It is important to note that the Garden Tutor Soil pH Test Strips are calibrated for soil testing only, so just dipping the test strips into straight water won't give you an accurate pH reading of the water. If you have additional questions, please let us know. We are glad to help. Angus Junkin Garden Tutor

Question: Can you also use this to test water
Answer: Hello! Wet & Forget will only remove organic growths such as moss, mold, mildew or algae. It will not remove mineral deposits. If you have further questions feel free to contact us 888-727-8524. The Wet & Forget Team
Question: Each color on the strip matched a different pH. The blue matched up with 6.0, the yellow with 8.0, the green with 5.5 etc. How to interpret
Answer: No. My mold is still there after using for many months. This product is "Septic Safe" (which hard to find) so no bleach etc.
Question: Could the ph of the water used have an affect the results? If so, how would you correct it
Answer: I used it on brick and in one day the moss was gone and has not returned. For you I would try it on a piece of plastic like a baggie first seems save to me.

Most plants prefer a pH of 6.5

Soil pH determines its acidity (sourness) or alkalinity (sweetness). For gardening, most plants prefer a soil pH between 6 and 7 with 6.5 being your target soil pH.

Maintaining proper soil pH prevents "nutrient lockout"

If soil pH is too extreme for plants, it creates an unhealthy environment by limiting the nourishment that is available to the plants.

Maintaining proper soil pH helps promote growth and vigor

Plants under stress are much more prone to poor health. Keeping pH at the proper level for the plants in your garden is one way to help.

Step 1: Collect a representative soil sample

Using a garden trowel or spade, dig a small hole (about 6 inches deep) and slice a sample from the edge of the hole as if you were cutting a thin slice of cake. Put this sample in a bucket or large container. Repeat this process a few times around your garden site. Mix soil samples thoroughly and remove any stones, grass, etc.

Step 2: Add soil to a cup or testing jar

Using a tablespoon put 8 level tablespoons (4 ounces) of the mixed soil into a clean plastic cup or testing jar and thoroughly mix with 8 level tablespoons (4 ounces) of water for 30 seconds.

Step 3: Dip strip into solution

For best results, let the soil/water solution sit for 20 minutes before testing. Briefly mix solution one more time and wait 10 seconds for the soil to settle a bit and then dip one pH test strip into the solution. Hold the strip in the solution for 3 seconds.

Step 4: Match color pads to color chart

Remove the pH test strip and shake it vigorously to remove any dirt on the pads. Depending on soil pH, some or all the color pads will change color. Match the resulting color(s) with the color chart that accompanied the pH test strips to determine your soil pH. If you are having difficulty choosing a pH, use our simplified chart to zero in on your soil pH.

User questions & answers

Question: pH tube is mostly purple (bottom 9/10 of tube) or simply cloudy. How do I read this? I have tried 5 tests without conclusive results
Answer: A lot depends on the type of soil you're testing. Some soils simply take longer to settle than others. Letting the sample rest overnight has worked for me when I had this problem. Even then - depending on how clean the soil sample is (i.e., trash, small gassy particles, etc.), you may some "small" particulates in the tube. You van still use the sample by "slowly" extracting the liquid ensuring you don't capture any of the particulates.
Question: What is the shelf life of the product
Answer: Most liquids are good between 6months to a 1 year.
Question: is there a refill kit available
Answer: Yes, we do now offer refill kits! You can order them by searching Amazon for "B08BJ9CS2H" . Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with!
Question: Do you sell any other soil testing kits that are reliable that can travel by air
Answer: Honestly this product is regarded by many as the gold standard for soil testing soil at this price point. LaMotte also makes a kit for NPK ( B0080GQY56 ) but that kit does not include pH and is qualitative (low, medium, high readings) not quantitative, unlike this test. I am not sure where your end destination is but another potential option is to have it shipped there if you are going to Canada or Mexico. There will likely be brokerage fees and shipping would be more costly but that is another potential option. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with and have a great day!

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used to test ph in water as well
Answer: No, you better not do this.Kindly Note: Do not use it to test pure water or other liquids. It can only be used to measure soil.
Question: Should the plant be watered when it is at the corresponding number or below the corresponding number
Answer: Yes, our manual has parameters. The test value is lower than this parameter. Please water your plants.
Question: The needle on my 3 in one soil tester does not move at all. I can’t tell that it measures anything. Followed instructions exactly. Help
Answer: It should be pre-calibrated to 7 (neutral). Since most soil is neutral, you may not see the needle move much, even after ten minutes. It will take at least ten minutes to give you an accurate reading, at any rate. If you add egg shells (to make it more alkaline) or coffee grounds (to make it more acidic) and wait another ten minutes, you should see a slight change. Try a sample of 50% soil to 50% coffee grounds to see if you can get a more extreme response.
Question: Can this probe be used to measure the PH of other things such as shampoo
Answer: No, it can't. This soil meter is designed to measure moisture or ph level of the soil and sunlight level, so it can only be used in soil, it cannot be used to test any liquids(such as: pure water, vinegar, lemon juice and so on), or the probes may be damaged.

User questions & answers

Question: Why isnt there any mention of the canister liquid and if it should be discarded or not in the instructions? I lost about 1/3 of the liquid opening it
Answer: I had to go to the company website and then go to their "frequently asked questions" section. The very LAST questions was: "QUESTION: Should I remove anything from the jar filled with liquid? ANSWER: No, please DO NOT remove the water or the Soil Savvy synthetic plant root capsule from the vial."Update May 13, 2017: The company did in fact add a very detailed explanation to their FAQ (frequently asked questions) on their website explaining the purpose of the liquid and resin capsule inside the soil sample container (i.e., both are needed to soak and process your soil sample), AND they moved that answer to the #1 (first) position to make it easier for customers to find. Great job!
Question: why can nobody be reached at this company? why no test results? why no response to emails? why do they have two dead phone numbers? ripoff
Answer: Many others are in the same boat. I think the best approach is to file a formal complaint with the Better Business Bureau, They are compelled to answer an inquiry from them, they can ( and do) just ignore us. You can search BBB for Unibest International and see that they are a C- rated company. There are a couple complaints already on this topic and they told BBB in mid-February that the problem was corrected...…..

Answer: Amazon is blocking my one star reviews on this product. I bought it and sent my sample back in December 2019. Emails to the company were finally answered with something like "we were hacked and we don't have deep pockets to fix this" We will send your results to your email address. Well, I'm still waiting and today it's March 13th 2020. I think we all threw our money away. The LCN recommended this company, but I have not heard him apologize for what is happening to his followers.
