12 best tree pruners
Tree Pruners are tools designed for trimming and pruning trees, shrubs, and tall plants. They come in various types and designs, each suited to different pruning tasks. Here are some common types of tree pruners:
Pruning Shears:
- Pruning shears, also known as hand pruners or secateurs, are used for precision cutting of small branches and stems. They are ideal for delicate pruning tasks and come in bypass and anvil designs.
Loppers:
- Loppers have longer handles and are used for cutting thicker branches and stems. They provide more leverage and are suitable for branches up to an inch or more in diameter.
Pole Pruners:
- Pole pruners have an extendable pole that allows you to reach high branches without the need for a ladder. They often come with a pruning saw or bypass pruner at the end of the pole.
Pruning Saws:
- Pruning saws have sharp, serrated blades designed to cut through thicker branches quickly. They are used for branches too large for loppers or hand pruners.
Telescoping Pruners:
- Telescoping pruners combine the features of loppers and pole pruners, allowing you to extend the reach and cut branches at various heights.
Electric or Cordless Pruners:
- Electric or cordless tree pruners are powered tools that make pruning easier for larger jobs. They are typically used for cutting branches with less manual effort.
Ratchet Pruners:
- Ratchet pruners are designed with a ratchet mechanism that multiplies the cutting power, making it easier to cut through thicker branches with less effort.
Bypass vs. Anvil Pruners:
- Bypass pruners have two sharp blades that pass by each other, providing clean and precise cuts. Anvil pruners have a single sharp blade that cuts against a flat surface, which can crush the branch slightly but may be suitable for deadwood.
When using tree pruners, it's essential to follow proper pruning techniques to ensure the health of your plants. This includes making clean cuts, avoiding excessive pruning, and cutting at the correct angle to promote healing. Additionally, always wear appropriate safety gear, such as gloves and safety glasses, when pruning.
The choice of tree pruner depends on the specific pruning needs of your trees and shrubs. Having a selection of pruners on hand allows you to tackle various pruning tasks effectively and maintain the health and aesthetics of your garden or landscape.

Fiskars Pruning Stik Tree Pruner makes it easy to cut high or low with a level of control traditional pruners with exterior ropes can’t match. A long, lightweight pole lets you cut high branches without the hassles and dangers of using a ladder, make low cuts without sore knees from kneeling or back strain from bending and easily reach into dense, prickly shrubs or tight spots. The rope-free design means you can use both hands to maximize your power and accuracy, and an easy-to-grip sliding handle makes the pruning action smooth and simple. An actuating ball at the end of the pole lets you reach even farther and still prune with precision, an included 15 inch saw blade makes it easy to take down thicker branches, and the cutting head rotates up to 230 degrees to let you prune and saw at tough angles. The fully hardened, precision-ground blade stays sharp, and a low-friction, rust-resistant coating makes every cut easier.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the wgt of the unit |
Answer: | 3.8 lb. without the saw. The saw add 0.55 lb. |
Question: | How does one operate the shears part of the tool? On other products I see a squeeze handle at the base of the pole. Don't see one here |
Answer: | The orange handle on the shaft slides up and down to work the shears. When the pole saw is fully expanded and the orange handle is out of reach, there is real strong nylonish-type cable attached to handle t pull for easy operation of the shears. I find that this gives me more flexibility in my posture which is important when using for extended periods of time. This particular Fiskars tool is awesome = in my opinion the best "medium duty" pole pruner, by far for these reasons. (1) It's FAR LIGHTER than other pole pruners; if you are going to be using a pole saw for more than 15-30 minutes at a time, you're gonna love this model (2) Very sharp, and like all Fiskars tools, the blade is made from quality metal that maintains a nice sharp edge. (3) THIS IS AN IMPORTANT ONE - there is no big "knobby thing or pulley set up on the end; this makes it lighter to use but also allows you to get into tighter spaces for finer detailing. (4) The telescoping mechanism works efficiently and very easily (5) One can position the angle of the shears for cleaner, better quality cuts.. I'm a professional botanist, gardening columnist and gardening instructor, and I highly recommend this pole pruner. |
Question: | Where can I get a replacement strap for my Fiskars 9240 telescoping pruning stick |
Answer: | I sent them a request for a replacement strap for my 9240 because it frayed at the end entering the pole when fully extended. I also sent a picture. To my surprise they sent me a new one. Not just the strap but a whole new pruner. Now that’s customer service and lifetime warranty at its best. Thanks Fiaksrs |
Question: | What is the largest sized branch which can be cut with the pruning shear |
Answer: | The pruner blades measure about 1-1/8" apart so it should do up to 1" as stated in the specs. I've cut about 3/4" branches with no issues. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the weight of the GG12 Tabor lopper |
Answer: | Weighed on a Moultrie Digital Game Scale at 3.6 pounds or 1.6 Kilograms |
Question: | Are the handles steel or fiberglass |
Answer: | These loppers have steel handles |
Question: | Do your knuckles smash together with these pruners? Or is there enough clearance |
Answer: | Absolutely NOT! These things totally rock. The mechanical advantage you get with them makes them go through thick branches like a hot knife through butter- even if you are a 5'1" 68 year old lady like me. I have their hedge shears, and they are so good, I bought these. I don't think there is a human alive that would bat their knuckles together with these. As shown, in the photo, the blades are closed. I love Tabor Tools. |
Question: | Is this better than the Cindy Lauper |
Answer: | While Cindy was a cutting edge artist in her day. She no longer seems as sharp. That being said, it is not fair to compare the two. |
Product features
Excellent tool for both green and hard/dry wood
This tool was designed with comfort and functionality in mind, featuring ergonomically contoured grips, innovative mechanisms, and coated blades for a sharper, longer lasting cut.
Because of their design, anvil loppers can often cut thicker branches than bypass. Anvil lopper have one straight blade that cuts as it closes onto a flat edge or ‘anvil’ (think about it like a knife on a chopping board). This makes an anvil lopper an excellent tool for trimming back live wood before making a final, clean cut with bypass loppers.
- GG12A Anvil Loppers are meant for pruning both hard green and dry/woody growth
- Cuts branches up to a diameter of 2”
- Suitable for cut-to-length work
- Suitable for preparatory cuts before making a final, clean cut with bypass loppers.
GG12A - There's no cut you can't make!
Compound Action System
The compound lever system with multiple pivot points and moving parts increases the force applied to the blades. The compound action blade has multiple moving parts which multiplies the force applied to the blades 3 times!
A Clean, smooth cut
The anvil mechanism works like this: the upper blade is narrower and sharper. The wide anvil distributes pressure and supports the branch in order to avoid damaging or crushing the bark. A curved head or swiveling anvil provides an easier cutting action close to the joint.
- Dynamic compound action mechanism
- Makes clean cuts with less resistance
- Perfect for cutting tougher, larger and harder branches

User questions & answers
Question: | How long does it take to charge the battery ? How long does the battery last |
Answer: | Definitely yes! That's why I bought it. In two or three years, the palm trees will probably be too high for it to reach the branches and I'll have to hire someone to trim them, but in the meantime, I'll save probably $200-$300 in costs, and I can still sell this on Craig's List for $50 or so. It's a Win-Win situation. |
Question: | chain stops moving as soon as it touches the surface of the tree & doesn't cut. chain is not too tight and isn't backwards. any ideas why |
Answer: | Completely collapsed the entire unit is 68.5 inches in length and cannot be made shorter than this length. |
Question: | I cut 7 to 8 branches, then the chain came off |
Answer: | 107 inches one inch shy of 9 ft. Added to the average persons height one should be able to cut a branch 15 feet from the ground. Highly recommended good product I paidc $75.99 |
Question: | Can i purchase additional extensions |
Answer: | The 7 lbs. referenced in the instruction manual is accurate and is ready to use including installed chain. Fully extended at max height will feel like twice as much unless you extend your left hand grip on the shaft as far up to the cutting head as you can when raising or lowering the tool. This gives you better leverage. Also retract the shaft when cutting low branches or when trimming limbs. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I am sorry, but my question is very basic (never used any sort of pruner before). In what position the blade should be and how to adjust it right |
Answer: | I found keeping the blade straight and standing back from the tree (instead of right underneath) best for cutting. You pull the blade towards you to cut, lift the blade place it on the branch and pull towards you lift blade and place it into the cut and repeat till cut off. |
Question: | is the woodzig an attachment or a separate tool used to cut larger branches |
Answer: | The woodzig is the long blade used to cut/saw the branches. Everything you need comes in the package. There are no other attachments needed. |
Question: | I have a juniper tree that needs pruning. The branches are about 3" - 4" in diameter. Will the Woodzig saw deal with these branches |
Answer: | I have cut branches that thick, but it was difficult--especially if you have to reach a long distance. Having said that, understand that I am 74 years old. The 9301 can do the job. |
Question: | What is the length of this pruner when it is NOT extended? I'm wondering for storage purposes |
Answer: | Some where over 6 ft with blade folded down (TIP: when you receive pruner, cut two pieces of cardboard from the box you receive it in to make a slip cover for the blade while on pole.. just heavy tape three sides. and then slide blade between the card board at open end.. this protects the blade and you while not in use..) |

User questions & answers
Question: | there are 2 different holes to choose from to screw on the head (either farther/closer to the edge). Which is more effective/what is the difference |
Answer: | The two holes allows you to change the angle of the saw with respect to the pole. It make a difference on the angle you are sawing from and accessiblity to diffeerent limbs. Most of the stuff I saw is no more tha about 15 feet from the ground so I've set mine on the hole closest the the tooth edge of the saw. For a higher limb or to gain better access to a limb that might be partiallym block I would move the saw to less of angle to the pole. It makes a difference on the leverage you can put on the saw and the space you have to manipulate the saw. There isn't a whole lot of difference between the two settings but sometimes a little difference is all you need |
Question: | Do you just pull and hold the rope or is there some kind of motion you need to do. I see no instructions |
Answer: | The rope activates the cutting blade. For small limbs you can hold the shaft in the one hand and pull with the other until the limb is cut, but for the biggest limb that can fit into cutter you will need the brace the end of the shaft on the ground or against you. Blade is spring loaded and resets itself unless a piece of bark wedges between the blade and the guard |
Question: | is the rope detachable from the device for easy opersation when using only the saw part |
Answer: | The rope is easy to detach; however, there is no "only the saw part". I think what you're asking is does the lever, chain and compound pull mechanism interfere with sawing-- It can and does. It also interferes with pruning but the increased force for "pruning" is worth it. I would not want to remove the mechanism from pole, in fact the saw blade attaches to the mechanism. With the increased force the need for the saw is reduced but I kept the pole and saw from my old worn out pruner for when I need to use a pole saw. Overall I'm quite happy with this TP6870 , Corona doesn't make junk. |
Question: | Is a replacement part available for the Plastic Clamping Nut? It WILL crack (I have 3 of these) soon after you have had too long to return it |
Answer: | Terrible engineering is it not? Just drill a small hole 3/32 works good about 2 inches below the nut and insert a bolt. for extending the saw pull it out 3 feet or so and drill another hole and then it will lock securely there as well. another nice thing to do is go to the dollar store and get some small carabineer key chain things and use them to secure the cord that works the lopper , then you can detach is while sawing. do these 2 things and you have a great t tool. |

Question: | Length of rope |
Answer: | the rope is long enough to use with 2 poles & have some left over. not sure about 3 cause I don't hav a 3rd pole, but you could always lengthen it. the pruner itself is great & a professional tool. 100 times better then the ones at home depot or lowes. |
Question: | Type of pole needed? My present head clamped onto my fiberglass pole, will this one also clamp on to the pole |
Answer: | K. Drake - for optimal performance, you will want to use any of the Jameson Fiberglass Base or Extension Poles to use with any Jameson Fiberglass Pole attachment; especially, the JA-34DP-PKG big Mouth Side Cut Double Pully Tree Pruner Kit. Jameson pole models can be used together in a variety of combinations - all have the same ferrules. For highest performance and safety, Jameson recommends using a base pole when using one pole or starting with a base pole when working with multiple poles. Product description
We've looked at hundreds of these and virtually all perform adequately at best. These are different; they are made to incredibly high standards. They use a special ratcheting mechanism, oversized for strength, and equipped with a coated blade. To this, they add telescoping handles (26 to 40" long with 6 pin-locked position stops and rubber grips). Cutting jaw capacity is 2 to 2-1/2". If you are looking for a lifetime arborist's quality tool, look no further. We cannot recommend these enough for heavy work: they are superb. The Bypass Pruner is designed to cut green wood cleanly.
- GREEN WOOD APPROPRIATE – Pruning device works best on wet woods with a cutting jaw capacity ranging from 2” to 2-1/2”
- EXTRA REACH – A telescoping handle allows an expansion from 26” – 40” to trim areas not reachable without assistance
- DOUBLE RATCHETING MECHANISM – This is a specially designed element that is oversized for strength
- LOP OFF BRANCHES – Cuts limbs which measure up to 2-inch in thickness
- CUTTING STRENGTH – It doesn’t take much effort to trim off some undesirable branches off of a small tree or bush as the sharpness of the blades does all of the work

Answer: | We are adding them in the next 2-3 weeks. |
Question: | Is this Garret Wade or a knockoff |
Answer: | I’m not familiar with Garret Wade tools but I’m finding this lopper works great...and I don’t have the strongest hands! |
Question: | Do you get both |
Answer: | If you mean the handle "extensions" the answer is Yes. It is made with telescoping handles. Great tool... My wife loves it! |
Question: | When cutting thin branches, do you have to open the jaws completely and ratchet down multiple strokes thru thin air until it reaches the branch |
Answer: | No, that's not the way this tool works. Open as far as needed and it bites into the work as soon as you close the handles, no ratcheting down. It ratchets, as required, as it opens. |
- EXTRA LONG EXTENSION – Pole extends to a towering 16 feet high, so you can effectively reach all those branches that used to be too high up to take care of.
