The wood is good as long as it ALWAYS has water in it (full - like a whiskey barrel), but when it is full then empty the wood shrinks back up and leaks. Plastic that looks like wood is better for water. If you want real wood for something other than liquid, then wood would be great.

Question:	So a buddy gave me one of these today. My guess is its rocking Gerbers awesome Mystery steel
Answer:	The blade, handle, and sheath display nothing as to country of manufacture. On the back of the box, in small letters, it says "Product of China," with "Printed in China" under that. Don't know if that is about the machete or the box. The quality of the machete and sheath is quite good. It has been used for brush clearing, and so far has performed admirably. There are some good heavy duty testing videos on YouTube which are worth the watch if you are considering purchasing one.

Answer:	The knife will come uniformly sharp, end to end. You can sharpen the tip and the area near the handle to be more acute. Thats what I do with all machetes and large choppers. I always spend about 2 hours doing that to a new blade.Shea, the areas mentioned need to be sharper than the chopping area so that fine carving and cutting can be done. Read up on how native people use their knives.

Answer:	I can't imagine a plastic sheath hurting a hardened steel edge. If it does then the blade is not heat treated properly. If the blade can withstand hitting hardwood without rolling the edge then it shouldn't get hurt by some plastic.

Answer:	This knife is made in China from Chinese 65Mn, high carbon, non-stainless steel.

Answer:	Well, here's the thing... You have another case of trying to make one tool do it all. There are always trade offs. It is a long and thin knife the shape of a machete. Machetes are typically made of thin, underhardened or lower carbon alloys that are very flexible and ductile, but not hold a keen edge and are more likely to roll than chip or break. Knives, with the exception of fillet or many kitchen knives, are made of thicker, harder alloys designed to keep their shape better and hold an edge longer. They tend to be higher in either carbon content or hardness, or both. This tool is a long thin knife more than a machete, as it has a higher carbon content and holds an edge significantly better than most of my machetes. It's not much thicker, but it is, and the weight and feel in hand shows. It is also far stiffer than most of my machetes. It is also quite comfortable in hand, but I'm not sure yet about durability of the handle - only time will tell. Since it holds a better edge, it serves my purposes more fully, in spite of being more brittle, for accompanying my pruning shears for clearing Himalayan blackberry bushes, a pest here in the Pacific Northwest. I use a Cold Steel machete or Tramontina in the tropics. I use my axes and hatches, or larger Ontario sp's or my Becker bk9 on stiffer, thicker, woodier materials. A thin, higher carbon hard tool steel tempered like this, especially when it has lots of contaminants as "dirty" Chinese usually does, will be far more prone to breakage with lateral forces. I have found mine to not chip as much as roll, so they've done a fairly good job on these. Overall, knowing what I was getting into, I'm fairly satisfied with these tools (10 and 18 inch).
