14 best hand post hole diggers

Hand post hole diggers are manual tools used in gardening, lawn care, and other outdoor activities to dig holes in the ground for various purposes, such as installing fence posts, planting trees or shrubs, or setting up signposts. They consist of two sharpened metal blades attached to long handles.

Here are some key points about hand post hole diggers:

  1. Design and Components: Hand post hole diggers typically consist of two blades (or scoops) joined together at the base, forming a clamshell-like shape. The blades are made of sturdy metal and are designed to dig into the soil when pressure is applied. The handles are attached to the blades and are used to manipulate and lift the soil.

  2. Usage: These tools are manually operated by individuals who drive the blades into the ground by pressing the handles together and then pulling the handles apart to remove the soil from the hole. The digging process is repeated until the desired hole depth is achieved.

  3. Applications: Hand post hole diggers are commonly used in gardening, landscaping, and construction for tasks like installing fence posts, gate posts, mailbox posts, or any other vertical structure that requires a hole in the ground.

  4. Advantages:

    • Hand post hole diggers are portable and easy to maneuver, making them suitable for small-scale projects or areas with limited access.
    • They do not require fuel or power, making them environmentally friendly and cost-effective.
    • They offer control and precision, allowing the user to dig holes of specific sizes and depths.
  5. Considerations:

    • Soil conditions and type can impact the effectiveness of hand post hole diggers. They work best in loose, well-tilled soil.
    • The user's physical strength and stamina can affect the ease and speed of digging.
  6. Maintenance: Keeping the blades sharp and clean is essential for efficient digging. Regularly inspect and, if needed, sharpen the blades to maintain optimal performance.

In summary, hand post hole diggers are manual tools used for digging holes in the ground for various outdoor applications, particularly in gardening, lawn care, and construction. They consist of two blades attached to handles and are valuable for their portability, ease of use, and precision in hole digging.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the country of orgin? Where is this made
Answer: Don't know. Try GOOGLE ----that search engine knows everything!
Question: My digger arrived with the handles slightly going past each other instead of meeting perfectly together. Is this normal
Answer: That should not be a problem. Mine also were slightly overlapping and have used them quite a bit.
Question: Are there original replacement blades for it
Answer: You should be able to get replacement parts through Seymour Midwest. However many of their tools come with a limited lifetime warranty which I believe this one to fall under.. This PHD is so heavy duty I cannot fathom the idea of issue with the blades.
Question: were are these hole diggers made
Answer: I don't know where they were made but I can tell you that they are the best posthole diggers that I have seen. They busted through buried rock and brick with no problem and no damage to the diggers.

User questions & answers

Question: Can i get handle replacements for my dig ez
Answer: I don't know if you broke the handles using these things are heavy,I don't know if you can get replacement handles are not .
Question: Is this the "X shaft" style or the old straight shaft style
Answer: It is somewhat of an X shaft design, but not in the same way that the Fiskars ones are. It is designed more with a lever action similar to bolt cutters. In this design the handles don’t need to be spread as far open as traditional post hole diggers to grab ahold of the dirt and it grabs the dirt with more holding force and therefore is less likely to drop the dirt as you are lifting it out of the hole.
Question: Can i get handle replacements for my dig ez
Answer: I have never had a handle break so I do not know if you can get a handle replacement and my oldest unit is 15 years old
Question: How deep a hole will it dig
Answer: I dig 42” holes with it all the time with no problem. Can go deeper too, but I am a deck contractor and that is the depth we are required to go here in CT to be below the frost level.

User questions & answers

Question: Can it penetrate roots up to a certain diameter
Answer: It can cut small roots but I haven't had it encounter larger roots. Most of the ones I had were 1/4 " across or smaller. I had gravelly soil and it worked great for me the times I used it.
Question: what is the diameter size hole that this digs
Answer: In the description: Blade size: 6". It will dig a 6" diameter round hole as you turn it while pushing down. When the auger fills, you pull it up and dump it, start again. It works quite well unless you have ground full of large rocks.
Question: how do you extend the auger coupler
Answer: I dug a 30' shallow well with the auger. You ideally would use stainless steel 3/4 inch couplers and 10' galvanized pipe additions. Don't use too many couplers as you might break the pipe or coupler as you bring it up to empty it. I broke one and had to replace the pipe once in my 30' digging. Hope that assures you. It looks like there are a couple of ways to go, as stated by others.
Question: Does this only cut 6" diameter holes? Seems like that wouldn't be enough for a 4"x4" fence post where 10" diameter holes are the norm
Answer: The hole ends up about 8". You can get 8" and 10" blades. I have dug many, many holes for 4X4 posts 3' deep including putting quikrete in some I have never known the need for 10" diameter holes for fences.

User questions & answers

Question: can you add extensions onto the handle to dig deeper holes
Answer: No You cannot add extensions
Question: What is the diameter of the bit, and what is the diameter of the finishec hole
Answer: 4 inches for bit 4 inches for post hole
Question: what is the diamiter of the auger
Answer: I would say about 6 inches. The shaft prevents measuring through the very center, so it may be 6.5 inches or thereabouts. AND this product has worked really, REALLY well for me - I'd say its about a 1000 times better than a post hole digger.
Question: Will i be able to dig 2 foot deep post holes with this auger
Answer: I measured my auger and from tip to handle is approximately 43 inches. I used my auger to dig holes 18 inches deep - it worked marvelously. Undoubtedly, as the auger handle gets closer and closer to the ground, the ability to actually turn the handle diminishes, but I am confident that had I wanted to dig a two foot hole, I could have done so. I have used standard post hole diggers, and what I like about this auger is that one gets a hole that is almost a perfect circle - a little more than 6 inches
Question: Can I get more rods and the piping for the well? How deep can this unit go
Answer: Yes you can. They come at 4', 3', and 2' and available on our website. You can go as deep as 50'.
Question: Are plans available to build this
Answer: Paul, Thank you for your interest in the Drilling Rig. New Drilling Rig is available for shipping in 10 days after placing your order on amazon. In another word if you place your order today December 1ST, It will be shipped on Monday December 11.
Question: Another question is that if you hit rock do u have some kind of special auger for rocks
Answer: Yes, we do have an auger head for drilling into thin rock layer or hard materials available on the website. This auger head can drill thru occasional rock type materials such as Florida soft to medium limestone.
Question: Where can i get a 6" auger for a 6" dia. pvc to accommodate a 4" dia. submersible pump
Answer: The auger head cylinder is approximately 4 1/8” in diameter. The two blades are flared out 1/2” each or more to minimize friction with well wall, therefore require less torque to turn the auger head. The minimum diameter of the hole is approximately 5 1/2”, but after cleaning the hole up and down, the hole enlarge to approximately 6” depending on soil type.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this auger work in very sandy soil
Answer: I live on the coast and have sandy soil. This auger works great, I'll never use post hole diggers again.
Question: how do you adjust it for different hole sizes
Answer: There is a bolt on each side. The blades have three position holes. Loosen the bolt and move to a different hole.
Question: Are you supposed to turn this thing clockwise or counter-clockwise? My soil is rocky and I'm really struggling with it
Answer: We always dug clockwise, but when we had to get through rocky spots we would turn counter-clockwise intermittently to loosen up the rocks to help break through. You will most likely need a breaker bar and a clamshell digger in conjunction with this auger to get your holes dug. We had all three pieces of equipment to use in our most difficult holes.
Question: Is the cutting bit on the end threaded to accept extensions of threaded pipe to dig deeper holes
Answer: Yes, I was digging a well. Usually about 18-22 feet is our water table (the shallow one). It digs extremely well, but the gumbo clay gets stuck. You have to pull the bit out and clean it on each effort. Talk about crossfit training. I will go back to my old way of adding water through the pipe to hydro evacuate the dirt rather than using this tool. It would be great for post hole digging.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this fit a standard 4x4 post
Answer: You are literally asking to fit a square peg into a round hole. The diameter of the hole will be 3.5 inches. To small for a 4x4 post but you could probably waller out the hole a bit and make it fit.
Question: To the seller & manufacturer: your description says "only tack welded - easy to break in hard ground" is this a brag point
Answer: I think they were making a point: auger bits that are only tack welded are easy to break in hard ground. "Ours" (the seller/manufacturer's) is bead welded, and thus stronger. Makes sense if you read it this way..... it could have been written more clearly, of course.
Question: what drill do you recommend to use with this
Answer: I use a 18v drill. Well real well.

User questions & answers

Question: It says 1500 W but amp is 10.9 amp at 120 V. should teh amp be 12.5 or wattage be 1200? What is the correct spec
Answer: I believe it is 12.5 amps. I know the motor is very powerful as I had no problems going through hard clay. I dug holes the full length of the auger or about 30 inches and did not have a problem Just remember to let the auger work by applying light downward pressure. Too much force and you will bind up the auger blade.
Question: should I get the 1500W or 1200w model, I don't understand the difference, the 1200w seems to have handle that you can brace on leg
Answer: The more power the better. Mine is 1200 and it doing just fine, however, it would be better to have some reserved power.
Question: Can it be used to dig horizontal
Answer: I don't know how safe it would be to use it horizontally, but if your strong enough to hold it that way I believe the motor would run just fine.
Question: Why is this more affordable than the 1200w model? 1200w model appears to be more ergonomic. is that an older version? what are the real motor specs

User questions & answers

Question: What is the coating made out of
Answer: Made in China. Do you think an American company is going to have 2 augers for $27? Try closer to $50 and they will be made the same. What I care about is how they work and they do the job they are meant to do at a reasonable price. Changed garden planting from a chore to a breeze.
Question: what is the warranty
Answer: China.
Question: Where can I contact the seller, for warranty
Answer: I'm unsure?Glad I bought the pair 1.6x9" and 3x9" together. I found that my 20v cordless had insufficient torque for the 3x9", but the1.6x9"worked fine. You'll probably need a 1/2" corded drill for the 3x9" or start with a smaller bit and finish with the larger bit.
Question: Where is this made
Answer: Hi, my friend we don't have the 8" Diameter earth auger for sale currently. We will decide to provide this in future.
