Question:	What is the diameter at the thick end
Answer:	It is strong enough to cut through grass, but as the other reviewers said, it will depend on how hard the soil is (and how much rock you find). For instance in my soil, I was only able to push it down 3' even though the bulbs that I was planting needed to be planted 6" deep. I ended up having to spade undisturbed, hard soil first and use the planter to make the planting holes. Since the planter is only 4" long, it will only remove a 4" plug if you were able to push it that far & the loose soil did not fall out. So you would have the insert the planter multiple times to get a 6" deep hole. Spading would not be acceptable if you are planting, for example, crocus in a lawn. If you only had to dig a 3" deep hole, then it would probably work even if you needed to chop the last inch with a narrow trowel or weeder. Lastly, soften the soil with water before digging.

Answer:	This has a measurement of 1" to 4". Only goes 4" into the ground.

Answer:	A little tricky to measure but looks like mine is about 2 1/4 inches and I believe you could hold it open to make a larger hole.
