13 best compost bins

Compost bins are containers designed for the controlled decomposition of organic materials into nutrient-rich compost. These bins are a valuable tool for individuals and gardeners looking to reduce waste, recycle organic matter, and create natural fertilizer for their gardens. Here's what you need to know about compost bins:

  1. Types of Compost Bins:

    • Composting Tumblers: These are cylindrical containers that can be rotated or turned to aerate the composting materials. Tumblers are known for their ease of use and faster composting times. They help maintain a consistent balance of air and moisture in the compost.

    • Composting Yard Waste Bins: These are larger, stationary bins designed to hold a significant amount of yard waste, kitchen scraps, and other organic materials. They often have multiple compartments or chambers to allow for various stages of composting.

  2. Benefits of Compost Bins:

    • Waste Reduction: Compost bins divert organic waste from landfills, reducing the environmental impact of waste disposal.

    • Nutrient-Rich Compost: The compost produced in bins is rich in nutrients and can be used to improve soil quality in gardens, flowerbeds, and for landscaping.

    • Sustainability: Composting is an eco-friendly practice that helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with organic waste decomposition in landfills.

    • Garden Health: Compost adds valuable organic matter to the soil, enhancing its fertility, structure, and water retention capacity.

    • Cost Savings: By producing your compost, you reduce the need to purchase commercial fertilizers and soil conditioners.

  3. How Compost Bins Work:

    • Composting relies on the natural decomposition of organic materials by microorganisms, such as bacteria, fungi, and earthworms.

    • In a compost bin, you layer or mix green materials (e.g., kitchen scraps, grass clippings) and brown materials (e.g., leaves, straw). The green materials provide nitrogen, while the brown materials provide carbon.

    • Adequate aeration and moisture are crucial for composting. Composting bins often have features like ventilation holes or tumbling mechanisms to promote aeration. You should also maintain proper moisture levels, similar to a damp sponge.

    • Over time, the microorganisms break down the organic matter, resulting in nutrient-rich compost that can be used to fertilize plants and improve soil structure.

  4. Maintenance:

    • Regularly turning or tumbling the compost helps aerate it and speed up decomposition.

    • Maintaining the right balance between green and brown materials is essential for successful composting.

    • Keep the compost pile moist but not waterlogged.

  5. Harvesting Compost:

    • Depending on factors like temperature and the size of the bin, compost can be ready in a few months to a year.

    • When the compost is dark, crumbly, and has an earthy smell, it's ready for use. You can harvest it by removing it from the bin and adding it to your garden.

  6. Location: Compost bins should be placed in a convenient, well-drained area with good airflow and partial sunlight.

In summary, compost bins, including composting tumblers and yard waste bins, are essential tools for recycling organic waste into nutrient-rich compost. They provide numerous benefits, including waste reduction, sustainability, improved garden health, and cost savings. Proper maintenance, aeration, and moisture control are key to successful composting.

User questions & answers

Question: what is the best mixture of scraps to put in the composter to start the first batch in a brand new yimby tumbler composter
Answer: Yes it does. It does not come with a mat.
Question: Any tips for winter usage, once temperatures cause the compost to freeze
Answer: Yes, if you print a cake on a shirt and make decorations for it then you could use it for cake decorating purposes
Question: do you have to put it together and is it difficult we are not good at assembly
Answer: I use a teflon sheet and no you don't have to press too hard. I used to use my iron and this thing is AAAAAmazing!!! Time and heat control... no more guessing or over heating.
Question: Is it bear proof
Answer: Your iron may be greatly superior to mine...But the advantages that this heat press has over my iron are these: 1) I'm able set the exact temperature I need. (I didn't realize what a difference this would make!) 2) The heat press is HEAVY. I want a lightweight iron for ironing clothes, but want pressure (which weight provides) for heat transfer designs. 3) This heat press has a timer. I've been amazed how much better my work turns out when I'm a little more careful about the timing. These are the three major advantages I've found in using a heat press over my iron. To be truthful, any heat press probably delivers these. But the smaller, more compact size (even with the largest, the 12 x 10--which I purchased), and hence, easier storage when not in use...is what tipped the scales for me when choosing the Cricut over the other brands of heat presses. Hope this helps your decision-making!

User questions & answers

Question: How much do these things smell? Want to put composter inside a small area behind our shed if the smell won't nauseate the kiddos
Answer: We have one in our backyard and I almost never smell it. The only time I have noticed a smell has been when the lid is open and I am dumping more kitchen scraps in it and even then it's not that often. All the compost books say if it does smell bad that means you need more greens or browns depending on the smell.
Question: What is the capacity
Answer: According to the calculator, 12 cubic feet equals almost 90 gallons--if you're mixing your nitrogen to carbon ratios using 5 gallon buckets. This looks like an excellent explanation for how to fill your composter: https://savvygardening.com/compost-how-to-guide-based-on-science/
Question: Since it doesn't have a bottom, will that work on our patio? We live in a condo and only have a large patio area that is concrete
Answer: I wouldn't use this in your situation. It would definitely stain the patio. I'd find a different design. Also you'll need to make sure you have enough dry material in the composter or it will stink if your compost is mostly kitchen scraps. In your situation I'd probably go for worm composting. My daughter made a vermicompost kit out of a couple of inexpensive storage bins at a camp a number of years ago. One has holes drilled into it and the other is solid so any worms or leakage will go into the outer bin. Here is an article on the subject: http://compost.css.cornell.edu/worms/basics.html You need to get red worms or red wigglers from a bait store, not common earth worms from the soil for best results.
Question: How do the top doors open? Easy enough to do one handed? Do they keep out the raccoons
Answer: I have not had any problems with raccoons or rodents at all. The top locks tightly. And yes, I can open it one handed to throw in a small amount of scraps but otherwise, two hands work better to take the entire top off when adding large amounts, leaves or twigs and grass clippings. Remember to turn it at least once a week - I use a pitchfork to do that task. Good luck!

Composting: Help Yourself and the Environment at the Same Time

The composting trend is growing and the most recent research shows that In 2012 the U.S recycled and composted almost 87 million tons of municipal solid waste. This saves more than 1.1 quadrillion Btu of energy; that's the same amount of energy used by 10 million households in one year.

Over 19 million tons of yard trimmings were composted in 2012, which is 5 times more than in 1990.

Food waste is the single largest type of item thrown away making up 21 percent of everything we throw out. We might as well use this food waste to fertilize our gardens rather than paying to have it sent to a landfill! The Soil Savers extra large capacity make it perfect for accommodating a good deal of food scraps.

Access Your Compost Easily

Dual hatch doors allow you convenient access to your compost whenever needed.

The Advantage of SoilSaver Bin Composting

The items you put in first will be at the bottom and should be the first out. This is a big benefit because you can use a little compost at a time if you need to. This is an advantage compared to most tumbling composters. With many tumbling composters, all the old scraps are mixed with the new waste which means all of the compost in the bin needs to be ready before you can use any of it.

More Advantages of the Best Compost Bin

The slots and louvers throughout the compost bin let air in and out for aeration which helps food waste break down quickly into rich compost.

The 0.200" thick resin walls provide excellent strength and durability.

The extra large 12 cubic foot capacity means you will have plenty of space for your compost waste

Lid is easy to open and lock making it convenient to add to your composter while keeping animals out

A Sense of Humus goes Well with Compost

A simple to follow yet comprehensive guide helps you put the right food waste and yard trimmings into your composter.

Question: Will extreme heat break down the plastic? I live in Arizona and plastic things do not thrive well for very long outdoors
Answer: We live in North Carolina and had a very hot summer last year...record amount of 100+ days. We have only had the bins for a year and have seen no breakdown. The only thing that had happened was in a bad storm we had a 12in tree fall on one of the bins and all it did was tear the top about 2in between holes. We are very pleased with how they are and for the price you can't beat them...Hope this helps
Question: Can I overlap it around a wire mesh composter
Answer: You can, tho there's really no need to. The bin comes with five interlocking plastic "keys" that keep the bin shut pretty tightly. I've used my bins for about two and a half years now and they have stood up to all the wear I could put them to... Mainly putting it up, filling it up to the brim, and taking it down to move it on many multiples of occasions. In fact, I found that the method of using this composter most efficiently is using it to contain all of your materials in by filling it, (preferably by green and brown layer mixing), letting it sit for a day, and then taking it down and setting it back up next to the first stack to refill again. Using it this way, you could potentially have a number of mounds all working sequentially in a row composting, and when one is ready to turn, just use the bin set up next to the oldest to turn the pile into and repeat. These bins are very hardy, I have gotten a lot of use out of mine without the need for any wire mesh just using those keys to keep the screen closed. One thing that may be valuable to you, depending on how fast you can fill it, are little wire stakes to hold it into the ground, though I've never had any issue with it wanting to fall over at all unless there are heavy winds, or if you don't have enough starting material to form as a nice base to hold the circle in place as you fill it. Usually about a foot or two will be fine to keep it up as you fill it progressively, though it's really meant to be used for massive amounts of materials to fill it, as the process of composting works best when the pile is greater than three feet tall. If you do not have much starting material, you could potentially decrease the diameter of the bin to as small as you choose to, as the composter material can be overlapped and still locked together to a pretty small circle if need be.
Question: Can you buy two of these and use them to construct one uber large bin
Answer: When I realized that connecting 2 of these together results in FOUR times the volume (volume of cylinder increases by square of the radius, and radius doubles if circumference doubles), I went ahead and gave it a shot. It is working GREAT for my purposes, which is simply as a large leaf bin instead of paying to haul the leaves away (and eventually I will get some good leaf mulch out of it). I currently have 3 of these bins, 2 connected together purely for leaves, and 1 stand alone for which I will attempt a hot compost. Before filling the connected bins it was fairly floppy, but once it was about half way full (30 minutes of scooping leaf piles using my hand leaf grabbers) it gained good structure. It's not going anywhere, and we've already had high winds. I have not needed to use stakes for either setup, as they are rigid and heavy when reasonably full (even with just leaves!) and I intend to keep them full. So if you have a ton of leaves like I do, this works great and is much more efficient than multiple single bins. But it does require a good amount of material to remain in the bins at all times. If you plan on a hot/active compost, this is probably not a great idea for the reasons others have mentioned. I have a picture of the connected structure if anyone is interested.

User questions & answers

Question: What number filter does this take
Answer: I bought mine replacement filetr for $3.80 from OurCrazyDeals - Filter 93F
Question: will the scraps actually compost in this or must they be moved to a regular compost bin
Answer: Folks, you must really stop and think. IF you know nothing of composting, read up on it! You use food scraps to put in your COMPOSTER in your YARD. This BIN, is used to temporarily store the food scraps until you have enough to take to the composter. where the food scraps break down, compost and turn into dirt. it is magical and you can even stand and watch it happen. However, you might well wear out waiting for it to happen. IF you have a tumbler composter, you can turn food scraps into dirt in 2 weeks otherwise, it will take much longer but the rewards are great. Before composting, we were buying potting soil for the garden to plant the veggies and flowers into. Now, with compost, we only occasionally will purchase fertilizer but stick pretty much to the compost. I am using right now 7 different bins for composting and turn it out rapidly. If you read up on it, you can actually learn and then you will not need to ask some of the questions I have seen in here. Good luck!
Question: fruit flies
Answer: yes, I've had it a week and I noticed fruit flies around it and the inside was filled with larvae. The larvae were even in the filter and around the edge of the lid where it holds the filter in. The bin was easy to clean but the lid was a pain to wash out and I left it all outside to wash again before bringing into the house.
Question: how do you change the charcoal filter
Answer: I have found two methods that work for me: 1. finger pinch - usually works for the first filter, but not so well for the second and 2. (my favorite) thick end of a chopstick or a thick bar stir stick. I always have a few chopsticks sets laying around and I found that thicker end will not poke a hole in your filters. Just push it through one of the top holes and it will push both filters far enough out so that you can grab them with your hands. For the hot second of annoyance that you might feel about needing extra equipment, it is so worth it! The double filter is a life and nose saver. Trust me! On a side note: I recommend that you pick up a extra set of round filters for every square/circle replacement pack you buy. The bottom (round filter) will need to be replaced more often then the top (square) filter. If the bottom filter gets wet accidentally (usually happens when I over fill the bin), it will mold and FAST. Top filter stays pretty dry, so you will not have to change it as often. Hope this helps and happy composting!

User questions & answers

Question: Is this product made from Ultravoilet [UV] rays protective plastic
Answer: Once it's done we like to let it sit for a month or longer, but have used it right away before. We will add it to our raised bed gardens along with organic manure, mix well and let it sit a few weeks before planting. We do live in Phoenix, Arizona, so our compost breaks down faster.
Question: Is this made in the USA
Answer: Yes.... although loading with a bucket would work best (easier). I shovel peat and ground up leaves into the composter from a wheel barrow. Unloading into a wheel barrow? No. taking off a lid and turning it over would work best..... turn over, dump out, and then load into a wheel barrow with a shovel,
Question: Does this come with a handle or where could I get one
Answer: My family raised nightcrawlers when I was a kid for vacation money. We put them in a big wooden box. My concern with the composter is that it has vents. When you rotate it, some dirt will fall out, but so could the crawlers. I'd add the compost to a different container with the nightcrawlers. My opinion.
Question: Store seller please respond. I see most just like this are bpa free. Is thia one as well
Answer: I have struggled empting it - I did the same with a plastic tarp. Be careful putting a pitch fork or shovel in the bin - the plastic around the rim is not that strong and will split if it is pushed against.

User questions & answers

Question: How sturdy is this item? Will it fall over in a strong wind? I live where the winds blow fairly hard at times
Answer: I actually toss a little bit (maybe 6 cups) of soil from my garden in my compost when starting it out and it seems to give it a good kick. Just add 50/50 green and brown material with it and it will take off. Make sure to check it often if it gets sunny outside. Compost seems to dry out fast when it's hot, due to bacteria and fungus using a lot more water when it gets hot.
Question: where is it made
Answer: I keep adding to my compost all winter. I just don't turn it over as often, maybe once every 2 weeks or so. While nothing will "cook" during the winter, you'll have fresh material on standby for when it does start to warm up. I suppose my only tip would be to make sure you add material to it during the daytime and make sure your composter stays in a sunny spot. The door can freeze "shut" at night due to the lower temperatures and any moisture along the track.I've already been through one winter with it and I sincerely had no issues and didn't have to make any changes to the way I used the tumbler.
Question: at what point do I stop putting waste in and stop so it fully composts? There seems to be a lack of info about the transition
Answer: You have to assemble it. I brought it about a year ago and put off trying to put it together until yesterday, because of all the reviews saying it was difficult. I didn't find it hard to figure out how to do it , and thought the instructions that came with it did a good job of showing you how to do it . It was time consuming because you have to put in 57 small screws with the nuts. I'm a woman, 76 years old with no especial insight on assembling things. It looks like it will do a good job for me.
Question: can we get compost tea
Answer: NO, NOT AT ALL. Compared to actual bear-proof stuff, this lightweight plastic thing is like playdough. It's not pretending to be otherwise. Bears require heavy metal and tricky locking mechanisms--and, even so, they still break open car doors and trunks. If you have bear issues, maybe keep this in an area enclosed by a tall, strong fence, or in a garage/shed/barn, if you have one big enough for that to work and not overwhelm you with stink.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this composter black bear resistant. If not - do you know of one that is
Answer: Don’t really know because it was bought for my wife who has two other compost containers. She has transferred some material to the new one. She does love her new composter. States that it is exactly what she wasted.
Question: Can I leave this outside in the winter or will it wear out faster? I could put it in my garage but worried it would smell
Answer: I have no idea. The description doesn't mention that it is BPA free. I would think this is a question for the seller/manufacturer.
Question: Can it be assembled as a single chamber
Answer: 43 gallons is about 0.2 cubic yards.
Question: Is the plastic of the compost bin BPA free
Answer: Yes, you can use it as a single chamber tumbler. but if so, the design of 2 doors would be redundant.

    User questions & answers

Question: How do you get the finished compost out? Can a shovel fit in the doors or do you turn the bin, open the door and dump out finished compost
Answer: I find it very stable. Most of the time one side is full and “cooking” while I am filling the other side. If you need to you could put sand bags on the base. Here in California I get 2 buckets of lovely soil from one side very 3 to 4 weeks
Question: What is the floorprint size of composter
Answer: My guess is if it's Israeli it's made by Keter who makes plastic sheds, deck boxes etc.
    Question: Is this BPA free
Answer: I made 2 batches so far. The 1st I filled 3/4 full and let it sit. Over time the pile lessened to about 1/2 as it composted. I filled the 2nd chamber full and am waiting for it to do its work...after 2 weeks it’s still pretty full, although it has decreased, and continues to compost.
Question: Is this tumbler suitable to be sitting in direct sun in the Central Valley? 110F is not unusual
Answer: When you add water, put a bin underneath and you will get compost tea.
