User questions & answers
Question: | Is this made in USA |
Answer: | I don't think it is American. Mine rusted out within 6 months. |
Question: | It seems to me that the canister lid should come apart to change the filter, any suggestions |
Answer: | Doesn't come apart. You just have to pull the old filters out, then use a brush to get the lid clean before stuffing in and smoothing new filters. Filters last a long time, in my experience. Love my Off! |
Question: | A knob and screw that holds handle came off my composter. where can i find ones |
Answer: | Don't waste the effort. Just use a different container, like a paper milk carton. |
Question: | Can you buy just a replacement lid? Not the filters, but the lid |
Answer: | Unfortunately at moment the manufacturer does not offer replacement lids. |

User questions & answers
Question: | If I buy two boxes will the second box be useable after I have used the first box of 40. I may dump more than once a week |
Answer: | Yes, as long as you don't get the second box at all wet. If you do, the bags will start to break down. This is the intended design and is what makes them compostable. |
Question: | These bags are .025 mil, while Biobags and other brands are .65 mil (26 times thicker). Are the Oggi bags more fragile than other brands |
Answer: | Yes they are, at least in my experience. However, one year later the biobags are still not completely composted while the Eco-liners have disappeared very shortly after going into my compost pile. I carry my compost bucket with kitchen scraps out to the pile and dump the liner and everything into the compost heap. This leaves my bucket much cleaner. I could carry just the Biobag with the scraps in it to the compost pile and it would not break. It is easy enough to carry the bucket, Eco-liner and scraps to the composter and I don't have to worry about seeing the bags every time I turn the compost heap. I live where it is dry and cold (about 9000 ft central CO) and that makes a difference in composting time. |
Question: | Do they really break sown to fast, or do they break down at all, and is there any chemical residue when they do break down |
Answer: | I've found that they leak really easily within my compost pail in the house, and are very slow to break down in my compost pile. Granted, I've only been using them for 3 months, but when I got to stir my compost pile in the garden, they seem to be pretty much intact. |
Question: | Are they actually biodegradable or just compostable |
Answer: | I believe they are supposed to be biodegradable - and not just break down into little plastic bits. (My compost pile is still under the snow so I cannot confirm that they have actually done so). This was a major selling point, but as I said in my review, they are far too small to be used in a standard sized compost bin. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it fit a norpro |
Answer: | It's possible - The model I have is by Epica |
Question: | Can you compost the filters |
Answer: | Not sure. |
Question: | what size diameter are the filters |
Answer: | I understand your desire for size information. The round filter is 6 1/2 inches in diameter. Too small to stay in place in the pail we have. Had to fashion a internal plastic rim to keep in place. The enclosed square of filter material is 4 7/8ths on a side. (unknown usefulness) |
Question: | how do you replace the filters |
Answer: | Squeeze in the center of the old filter and pull it out. There is a square one and a round one. Put in the new filters the same way - work them into the top of the lid until they are smooth. Square one first then the round one. |

Question: | Will extreme heat break down the plastic? I live in Arizona and plastic things do not thrive well for very long outdoors |
Answer: | We live in North Carolina and had a very hot summer last year...record amount of 100+ days. We have only had the bins for a year and have seen no breakdown. The only thing that had happened was in a bad storm we had a 12in tree fall on one of the bins and all it did was tear the top about 2in between holes. We are very pleased with how they are and for the price you can't beat them...Hope this helps |
Question: | Can I overlap it around a wire mesh composter |
Answer: | You can, tho there's really no need to. The bin comes with five interlocking plastic "keys" that keep the bin shut pretty tightly. I've used my bins for about two and a half years now and they have stood up to all the wear I could put them to... Mainly putting it up, filling it up to the brim, and taking it down to move it on many multiples of occasions. In fact, I found that the method of using this composter most efficiently is using it to contain all of your materials in by filling it, (preferably by green and brown layer mixing), letting it sit for a day, and then taking it down and setting it back up next to the first stack to refill again. Using it this way, you could potentially have a number of mounds all working sequentially in a row composting, and when one is ready to turn, just use the bin set up next to the oldest to turn the pile into and repeat. These bins are very hardy, I have gotten a lot of use out of mine without the need for any wire mesh just using those keys to keep the screen closed. One thing that may be valuable to you, depending on how fast you can fill it, are little wire stakes to hold it into the ground, though I've never had any issue with it wanting to fall over at all unless there are heavy winds, or if you don't have enough starting material to form as a nice base to hold the circle in place as you fill it. Usually about a foot or two will be fine to keep it up as you fill it progressively, though it's really meant to be used for massive amounts of materials to fill it, as the process of composting works best when the pile is greater than three feet tall. If you do not have much starting material, you could potentially decrease the diameter of the bin to as small as you choose to, as the composter material can be overlapped and still locked together to a pretty small circle if need be. |
Question: | Can you buy two of these and use them to construct one uber large bin |
Answer: | When I realized that connecting 2 of these together results in FOUR times the volume (volume of cylinder increases by square of the radius, and radius doubles if circumference doubles), I went ahead and gave it a shot. It is working GREAT for my purposes, which is simply as a large leaf bin instead of paying to haul the leaves away (and eventually I will get some good leaf mulch out of it). I currently have 3 of these bins, 2 connected together purely for leaves, and 1 stand alone for which I will attempt a hot compost. Before filling the connected bins it was fairly floppy, but once it was about half way full (30 minutes of scooping leaf piles using my hand leaf grabbers) it gained good structure. It's not going anywhere, and we've already had high winds. I have not needed to use stakes for either setup, as they are rigid and heavy when reasonably full (even with just leaves!) and I intend to keep them full. So if you have a ton of leaves like I do, this works great and is much more efficient than multiple single bins. But it does require a good amount of material to remain in the bins at all times. If you plan on a hot/active compost, this is probably not a great idea for the reasons others have mentioned. I have a picture of the connected structure if anyone is interested. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How much do these things smell? Want to put composter inside a small area behind our shed if the smell won't nauseate the kiddos |
Answer: | We have one in our backyard and I almost never smell it. The only time I have noticed a smell has been when the lid is open and I am dumping more kitchen scraps in it and even then it's not that often. All the compost books say if it does smell bad that means you need more greens or browns depending on the smell. |
Question: | What is the capacity |
Answer: | According to the calculator, 12 cubic feet equals almost 90 gallons--if you're mixing your nitrogen to carbon ratios using 5 gallon buckets. This looks like an excellent explanation for how to fill your composter: https://savvygardening.com/compost-how-to-guide-based-on-science/ |
Question: | Since it doesn't have a bottom, will that work on our patio? We live in a condo and only have a large patio area that is concrete |
Answer: | I wouldn't use this in your situation. It would definitely stain the patio. I'd find a different design. Also you'll need to make sure you have enough dry material in the composter or it will stink if your compost is mostly kitchen scraps. In your situation I'd probably go for worm composting. My daughter made a vermicompost kit out of a couple of inexpensive storage bins at a camp a number of years ago. One has holes drilled into it and the other is solid so any worms or leakage will go into the outer bin. Here is an article on the subject: http://compost.css.cornell.edu/worms/basics.html You need to get red worms or red wigglers from a bait store, not common earth worms from the soil for best results. |
Question: | How do the top doors open? Easy enough to do one handed? Do they keep out the raccoons |
Answer: | I have not had any problems with raccoons or rodents at all. The top locks tightly. And yes, I can open it one handed to throw in a small amount of scraps but otherwise, two hands work better to take the entire top off when adding large amounts, leaves or twigs and grass clippings. Remember to turn it at least once a week - I use a pitchfork to do that task. Good luck! |

Composting: Help Yourself and the Environment at the Same Time
The composting trend is growing and the most recent research shows that In 2012 the U.S recycled and composted almost 87 million tons of municipal solid waste. This saves more than 1.1 quadrillion Btu of energy; that's the same amount of energy used by 10 million households in one year.
Over 19 million tons of yard trimmings were composted in 2012, which is 5 times more than in 1990.
Food waste is the single largest type of item thrown away making up 21 percent of everything we throw out. We might as well use this food waste to fertilize our gardens rather than paying to have it sent to a landfill! The Soil Savers extra large capacity make it perfect for accommodating a good deal of food scraps.
Access Your Compost Easily
Dual hatch doors allow you convenient access to your compost whenever needed.
The Advantage of SoilSaver Bin Composting
The items you put in first will be at the bottom and should be the first out. This is a big benefit because you can use a little compost at a time if you need to. This is an advantage compared to most tumbling composters. With many tumbling composters, all the old scraps are mixed with the new waste which means all of the compost in the bin needs to be ready before you can use any of it.
More Advantages of the Best Compost Bin
The slots and louvers throughout the compost bin let air in and out for aeration which helps food waste break down quickly into rich compost.
The 0.200" thick resin walls provide excellent strength and durability.
The extra large 12 cubic foot capacity means you will have plenty of space for your compost waste
Lid is easy to open and lock making it convenient to add to your composter while keeping animals out
A Sense of Humus goes Well with Compost
A simple to follow yet comprehensive guide helps you put the right food waste and yard trimmings into your composter.
