12 best composters

Composters, also known as compost bins or composting systems, are containers or structures specifically designed for the controlled decomposition of organic materials into nutrient-rich compost. These composters are essential tools for individuals who want to recycle kitchen scraps, yard waste, and other organic matter into valuable compost for gardening and landscaping purposes. Here is what you need to know about composters:

  1. Types of Composters:

    • Tumbling Composters: These composters have a drum or barrel that can be rotated, allowing for easy mixing and aeration of the compost. Tumbling composters are known for their efficiency in producing compost quickly.
    • Stationary Bins: Stationary composters are typically open-bottomed containers that sit directly on the ground. They are available in various sizes and materials, such as wood, plastic, or metal.
    • Vermicomposters: Vermicomposters use earthworms to aid in the decomposition process. These bins are smaller and ideal for indoor or small-space composting.
  2. Aeration: Proper aeration is crucial for composting, as it provides oxygen to the microorganisms responsible for breaking down organic matter. Many composters are designed with aeration features, such as vents, holes, or tumbling mechanisms.

  3. Materials Suitable for Composting: Composters can handle a wide range of organic materials, including fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, eggshells, yard waste (leaves, grass clippings), small branches, and more. However, avoid adding meat, dairy, and oily foods, as they can attract pests and slow down the composting process.

  4. Layering: To optimize the composting process, it's recommended to layer green (nitrogen-rich) and brown (carbon-rich) materials in your composter. This creates a balanced carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, facilitating decomposition.

  5. Temperature and Moisture Control: Composting works best within a specific temperature range, typically between 110°F to 160°F (43°C to 71°C). Some composters are designed to capture and retain heat, promoting faster decomposition. Additionally, maintaining the right level of moisture (similar to a wrung-out sponge) is important for composting success.

  6. Time Frame: The time it takes to produce usable compost can vary depending on factors like the type of composter, the materials used, and environmental conditions. It can take several weeks to several months to create finished compost.

  7. Harvesting Compost: Once the composting process is complete, you can harvest the finished compost from your composter. This nutrient-rich compost can be used to enrich garden soil, improve plant growth, and reduce the need for chemical fertilizers.

  8. Maintenance: Regularly turning or mixing the compost, monitoring moisture levels, and ensuring proper aeration are essential for successful composting. Some composters may require occasional cleaning or maintenance.

  9. Environmental Benefits: Composting reduces the amount of organic waste sent to landfills, mitigates greenhouse gas emissions, and enriches soil with valuable nutrients, promoting sustainable gardening practices.

In summary, composters are valuable tools for turning organic waste into nutrient-rich compost, which can benefit your garden and reduce your environmental impact. Choosing the right composter for your needs and maintaining proper composting practices can lead to successful and sustainable composting.

User questions & answers

Question: what is the best mixture of scraps to put in the composter to start the first batch in a brand new yimby tumbler composter
Answer: Yes it does. It does not come with a mat.
Question: Any tips for winter usage, once temperatures cause the compost to freeze
Answer: Yes, if you print a cake on a shirt and make decorations for it then you could use it for cake decorating purposes
Question: do you have to put it together and is it difficult we are not good at assembly
Answer: I use a teflon sheet and no you don't have to press too hard. I used to use my iron and this thing is AAAAAmazing!!! Time and heat control... no more guessing or over heating.
Question: Is it bear proof
Answer: Your iron may be greatly superior to mine...But the advantages that this heat press has over my iron are these: 1) I'm able set the exact temperature I need. (I didn't realize what a difference this would make!) 2) The heat press is HEAVY. I want a lightweight iron for ironing clothes, but want pressure (which weight provides) for heat transfer designs. 3) This heat press has a timer. I've been amazed how much better my work turns out when I'm a little more careful about the timing. These are the three major advantages I've found in using a heat press over my iron. To be truthful, any heat press probably delivers these. But the smaller, more compact size (even with the largest, the 12 x 10--which I purchased), and hence, easier storage when not in use...is what tipped the scales for me when choosing the Cricut over the other brands of heat presses. Hope this helps your decision-making!

User questions & answers

Question: Does it need to sit in sunlight
Answer: It should sit in the sun. The heat from the sun helps break down the compost.
Question: Does this have drainage
Answer: It doesn't have true "drainage," but it is not air tight. When I add water from time to time, it does leak a bit.
Question: would bears be able to get into this
Answer: I would say yes. It's sturdy enough to handle the compost, but a decent sized bear would probably be able to break it apart.
Question: How do you dump the compost out of the bin
Answer: open the sliding door, put a tub under it and rotate until it begins to dump out

Answer: Yes, it comes with disposable filters to get you started and recommends replacing those with more disposable or a permanent filter. The filter size is 4-cups.
Question: How well does this composter drain
Answer: Yes Martin you can use any milk. It says froth volume will vary with the type of milk used. For soy, almond, non-fat milk use less milk to avoid pitcher overflow. I have only used skim so far and I don't fill it all the way to max. I fill it in between the one and two cup line.

User questions & answers

Question: How sturdy is this item? Will it fall over in a strong wind? I live where the winds blow fairly hard at times
Answer: I actually toss a little bit (maybe 6 cups) of soil from my garden in my compost when starting it out and it seems to give it a good kick. Just add 50/50 green and brown material with it and it will take off. Make sure to check it often if it gets sunny outside. Compost seems to dry out fast when it's hot, due to bacteria and fungus using a lot more water when it gets hot.
Question: where is it made
Answer: I keep adding to my compost all winter. I just don't turn it over as often, maybe once every 2 weeks or so. While nothing will "cook" during the winter, you'll have fresh material on standby for when it does start to warm up. I suppose my only tip would be to make sure you add material to it during the daytime and make sure your composter stays in a sunny spot. The door can freeze "shut" at night due to the lower temperatures and any moisture along the track.I've already been through one winter with it and I sincerely had no issues and didn't have to make any changes to the way I used the tumbler.
Question: at what point do I stop putting waste in and stop so it fully composts? There seems to be a lack of info about the transition
Answer: You have to assemble it. I brought it about a year ago and put off trying to put it together until yesterday, because of all the reviews saying it was difficult. I didn't find it hard to figure out how to do it , and thought the instructions that came with it did a good job of showing you how to do it . It was time consuming because you have to put in 57 small screws with the nuts. I'm a woman, 76 years old with no especial insight on assembling things. It looks like it will do a good job for me.
Question: can we get compost tea
Answer: NO, NOT AT ALL. Compared to actual bear-proof stuff, this lightweight plastic thing is like playdough. It's not pretending to be otherwise. Bears require heavy metal and tricky locking mechanisms--and, even so, they still break open car doors and trunks. If you have bear issues, maybe keep this in an area enclosed by a tall, strong fence, or in a garage/shed/barn, if you have one big enough for that to work and not overwhelm you with stink.

User questions & answers

Question: How do you get the finished compost out? Can a shovel fit in the doors or do you turn the bin, open the door and dump out finished compost
Answer: I find it very stable. Most of the time one side is full and “cooking” while I am filling the other side. If you need to you could put sand bags on the base. Here in California I get 2 buckets of lovely soil from one side very 3 to 4 weeks
Question: What is the floorprint size of composter
Answer: My guess is if it's Israeli it's made by Keter who makes plastic sheds, deck boxes etc.
Question: Is this BPA free
Answer: I made 2 batches so far. The 1st I filled 3/4 full and let it sit. Over time the pile lessened to about 1/2 as it composted. I filled the 2nd chamber full and am waiting for it to do its work...after 2 weeks it’s still pretty full, although it has decreased, and continues to compost.
Question: Is this tumbler suitable to be sitting in direct sun in the Central Valley? 110F is not unusual
Answer: When you add water, put a bin underneath and you will get compost tea.

User questions & answers

Question: How much do these things smell? Want to put composter inside a small area behind our shed if the smell won't nauseate the kiddos
Answer: We have one in our backyard and I almost never smell it. The only time I have noticed a smell has been when the lid is open and I am dumping more kitchen scraps in it and even then it's not that often. All the compost books say if it does smell bad that means you need more greens or browns depending on the smell.
Question: What is the capacity
Answer: According to the calculator, 12 cubic feet equals almost 90 gallons--if you're mixing your nitrogen to carbon ratios using 5 gallon buckets. This looks like an excellent explanation for how to fill your composter: https://savvygardening.com/compost-how-to-guide-based-on-science/
Question: Since it doesn't have a bottom, will that work on our patio? We live in a condo and only have a large patio area that is concrete
Answer: I wouldn't use this in your situation. It would definitely stain the patio. I'd find a different design. Also you'll need to make sure you have enough dry material in the composter or it will stink if your compost is mostly kitchen scraps. In your situation I'd probably go for worm composting. My daughter made a vermicompost kit out of a couple of inexpensive storage bins at a camp a number of years ago. One has holes drilled into it and the other is solid so any worms or leakage will go into the outer bin. Here is an article on the subject: http://compost.css.cornell.edu/worms/basics.html You need to get red worms or red wigglers from a bait store, not common earth worms from the soil for best results.
Question: How do the top doors open? Easy enough to do one handed? Do they keep out the raccoons
Answer: I have not had any problems with raccoons or rodents at all. The top locks tightly. And yes, I can open it one handed to throw in a small amount of scraps but otherwise, two hands work better to take the entire top off when adding large amounts, leaves or twigs and grass clippings. Remember to turn it at least once a week - I use a pitchfork to do that task. Good luck!

Composting: Help Yourself and the Environment at the Same Time

The composting trend is growing and the most recent research shows that In 2012 the U.S recycled and composted almost 87 million tons of municipal solid waste. This saves more than 1.1 quadrillion Btu of energy; that's the same amount of energy used by 10 million households in one year.

Over 19 million tons of yard trimmings were composted in 2012, which is 5 times more than in 1990.

Food waste is the single largest type of item thrown away making up 21 percent of everything we throw out. We might as well use this food waste to fertilize our gardens rather than paying to have it sent to a landfill! The Soil Savers extra large capacity make it perfect for accommodating a good deal of food scraps.

Access Your Compost Easily

Dual hatch doors allow you convenient access to your compost whenever needed.

The Advantage of SoilSaver Bin Composting

The items you put in first will be at the bottom and should be the first out. This is a big benefit because you can use a little compost at a time if you need to. This is an advantage compared to most tumbling composters. With many tumbling composters, all the old scraps are mixed with the new waste which means all of the compost in the bin needs to be ready before you can use any of it.

More Advantages of the Best Compost Bin

The slots and louvers throughout the compost bin let air in and out for aeration which helps food waste break down quickly into rich compost.

The 0.200" thick resin walls provide excellent strength and durability.

The extra large 12 cubic foot capacity means you will have plenty of space for your compost waste

Lid is easy to open and lock making it convenient to add to your composter while keeping animals out

A Sense of Humus goes Well with Compost

A simple to follow yet comprehensive guide helps you put the right food waste and yard trimmings into your composter.

Question: Will extreme heat break down the plastic? I live in Arizona and plastic things do not thrive well for very long outdoors
Answer: We live in North Carolina and had a very hot summer last year...record amount of 100+ days. We have only had the bins for a year and have seen no breakdown. The only thing that had happened was in a bad storm we had a 12in tree fall on one of the bins and all it did was tear the top about 2in between holes. We are very pleased with how they are and for the price you can't beat them...Hope this helps
Question: Can I overlap it around a wire mesh composter
Answer: You can, tho there's really no need to. The bin comes with five interlocking plastic "keys" that keep the bin shut pretty tightly. I've used my bins for about two and a half years now and they have stood up to all the wear I could put them to... Mainly putting it up, filling it up to the brim, and taking it down to move it on many multiples of occasions. In fact, I found that the method of using this composter most efficiently is using it to contain all of your materials in by filling it, (preferably by green and brown layer mixing), letting it sit for a day, and then taking it down and setting it back up next to the first stack to refill again. Using it this way, you could potentially have a number of mounds all working sequentially in a row composting, and when one is ready to turn, just use the bin set up next to the oldest to turn the pile into and repeat. These bins are very hardy, I have gotten a lot of use out of mine without the need for any wire mesh just using those keys to keep the screen closed. One thing that may be valuable to you, depending on how fast you can fill it, are little wire stakes to hold it into the ground, though I've never had any issue with it wanting to fall over at all unless there are heavy winds, or if you don't have enough starting material to form as a nice base to hold the circle in place as you fill it. Usually about a foot or two will be fine to keep it up as you fill it progressively, though it's really meant to be used for massive amounts of materials to fill it, as the process of composting works best when the pile is greater than three feet tall. If you do not have much starting material, you could potentially decrease the diameter of the bin to as small as you choose to, as the composter material can be overlapped and still locked together to a pretty small circle if need be.
Question: Can you buy two of these and use them to construct one uber large bin
Answer: When I realized that connecting 2 of these together results in FOUR times the volume (volume of cylinder increases by square of the radius, and radius doubles if circumference doubles), I went ahead and gave it a shot. It is working GREAT for my purposes, which is simply as a large leaf bin instead of paying to haul the leaves away (and eventually I will get some good leaf mulch out of it). I currently have 3 of these bins, 2 connected together purely for leaves, and 1 stand alone for which I will attempt a hot compost. Before filling the connected bins it was fairly floppy, but once it was about half way full (30 minutes of scooping leaf piles using my hand leaf grabbers) it gained good structure. It's not going anywhere, and we've already had high winds. I have not needed to use stakes for either setup, as they are rigid and heavy when reasonably full (even with just leaves!) and I intend to keep them full. So if you have a ton of leaves like I do, this works great and is much more efficient than multiple single bins. But it does require a good amount of material to remain in the bins at all times. If you plan on a hot/active compost, this is probably not a great idea for the reasons others have mentioned. I have a picture of the connected structure if anyone is interested.

    Product description

The HOTFROG Dual Body Tumbling Composter is a hybrid of our two most popular tumbling composter models. Avoid digging and mixing your compost pile by hand. The tumbling design makes mixing easy and efficient. Just close the door and turn it 5-6 times every 2-3 days. In hot sunny conditions and with a proper balance of ingredients the compost can finish in as little as 2 weeks. Two separate sides allow the first side to finish while leaving the second side available to add fresh scraps/clippings. Continuously swapping sides after finishing will create an uninterrupted flow of rich, healthy compost. Both composter bodies spin independently from each other making tumbling this composter twice as easy as composters of similar size. Constructed from BPA free, UV inhibited, recycled polyethylene the plastic is contact safe and will not degrade under direct sunlight. The painted galvanized steel frame is corrosion resistant and will look great for years. The total volume of both chambers is approximately 37 gallons (5 cu ft. ).

    User questions & answers

Question: We are city dwellers and there are rat issues in the neighborhood. Would the composted provide them with another attraction
Answer: dont buy this build a home made one instead
Question: Is the frame sturdy enough to support two full bins
Answer: Very little because of you fill it too full then the plastic breaks. It is a horrible composted. Don't waste your money!
Question: How is this put together? Are the tumblers one piece or do you join two or more pieces to put together each tumbler? How many screws? Thanks
Answer: The instructions to assemble should be with the tumbler, together with a list of all the parts.
Question: Can you tell me the assembled dimensions
Answer: Tracy, push the open/close slide in to the open position, then turn the lid counter clockwise. It seems like it is stuck but muscle it, and it will open. After that file down the small round little nibs in each of the four 'L' shaped air vents and that will make the lid easier to turn. Do the same thing on the other side of the barrel. It is not hard to file the plastic and it is worth the effort because my tumbler is working well and it really does cook compost efficiently.
