We’ve thoughtfully chosen to use Fir wood over the traditional Pine because Fir has a tighter knit grain-flow within the wood than Pine does. Maybe research the type of wood carpenter bees prefer and somehow introduce that to your yard. You may also need to treat, paint or clear coat the wood siding on your house. Here's some quick research: These are likely to be carpenter bees, named for their habit of excavating holes in wood, in order to rear their young. Carpenter bees prefer unpainted, weathered wood, especially softer varieties such as redwood, cedar, cypress and pine. Painted or pressure-treated wood is much less susceptible to attack. | Answer: | It comes with reed inserts of various sized openings. Mason bees prefer 5/8th inch (7mm) reeds and will use the larger ones last, if at all. Bamboo reeds are not all hollow so some are wasted. Next time I will get the 5/8 cardboard tubes instead. |

| Answer: | You don't need any bees to attract the firs ones. Just be aware, those are solitary bees, not beehive dwelling honey bees. Thy don't sting, don't make honey for you, they just pollinate whatever is blooming around. The main attraction for those mason bees are blooming trees and flowers, and they need some clay soil available to them to build a nest inside a tube. So, it may be a good adea to put some bare clay soil nearby in a low flower pot or something. They may or may not return next year, it may take a couple of years for bees to appear. We don't command wild animals, do we? |
