User questions & answers
Question: | I'm returning to fountain pens after a long absence. Would it be better to start out with this product or head instead for a permanent fountain pen |
Answer: | I would recommend you give these a shot, just so you get the hang of using fountain pens again. When I first started to use FPs, I used a very heavy hand-a habit from the ballpoint and rollerball days. Thankfully, I was only using disposable pens so I didn't end up ruining the nibs.Although I've moved on to more expensive pens, I still keep these around. They're good value for money and are good writers as well. |
Question: | Will these survive a plane flight |
Answer: | no, they will not. I took them on a plane and they stated leaking ink, even with the caps on sealed in my carry-on. |
Question: | are these good for school? Fountain pens fascinate me but im also going into high school in september |
Answer: | Looking at these pens for my son and came across this question. Realized this kid has now graduated.....maybe. Did they work? How was high school? |
Question: | Do these pens come in all the different colors that it has on the top of the pens |
Answer: | Yes the colors are the same as the tops and are rich and true, not faded out. The ink, in these Pilot Varsity fountain pens flows very freely which makes them smooth writing but be careful with cheaper grades of paper the ink will bleed and show through to the other side. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Hi, with everyday use, how long do these last |
Answer: | No, there are a variety of ink colors. |
Question: | Is the ink waterproof |
Answer: | Any pen could write on skin technically but I wouldn't suggest using this for that. All that blood poisoning toxicity aside the nib is a pain in the butt to get flowing after extended periods of use and this particular pen. When your writing on anything that isn't a clean piece of paper it clots up rather fast disrupting the flow. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What replacement pilot cartridges should i buy for the pilot mr |
Answer: | I use Pilot Namiki Blue/Black. The package has "IC-100" on it, and UPC number 69102. The bar code says 7283869102. If I wanted to reorder, I would click this link: https://www.amazon.com/Pilot-Fountain-Cartridge-Cartridges-69102/dp/B005XLFKCO/ref=pd_nav_hcs_bia_t_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=HCKAJBT5SYPZ24N2G8JX |
Question: | Does this pen use cartridges or a converter |
Answer: | It takes both. Pilot cartridges or a converter (con-20, con-50, con-40). I've seen them ship with a con-20, and I think all the ones I have ordered have come with a cartridge as well. |
Question: | Hi! I'm new to using this type of pen. Can anyone tell me if the nib on this pen is replaceable |
Answer: | Some of the answers here are pretty strange. Pilot fountain pen nibs are not replaceable by non-Pilot nibs, and they don't sell the nibs separately. However, you can quite easily exchange the nib on this pen with nibs from other Metropolitans, plus the nibs from the Pilot Penmanship, Prera, Plumix, Kakuno, or 78g. Some brands of fountain pens do use nibs that are fairly generic, but Pilot nibs are designed to fit into a slot on the feed and so aren't quite the same shape as other similar-sized nibs. You might be able to get a different #5 nib in there, but it would likely take a lot of tinkering. |
Question: | What's a converter & how's it used? The use/care booklet only brags & doesn't say how to load cartridge & in what direction nor how converter used |
Answer: | A converter is used when you want to use ink from an ink pot/well, you put the converter in the pen, as you would a cartridge, squeeze it, put the nib of the pen in the ink pot/well slowly release, and it sucks the ink up through the nib and into the converter. All fountain pens/cartridges are different, and how they are loaded depends on the pen and cartridge.. this particular one, you insert the fat end of the cartridge into the pen (obviously after unscrewing it from the barrel), and push it in firmly.. you will feel it being "punctured" . Then screw the barrel back on. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How do you remove the converter on the Pilot Metropolitan? I can't get it out |
Answer: | remove the base of the pen, the converter is snuggly attached. I would suggest a pain of needle nose pliers to gently turn the converter piece then pull it out but try not to squish the ink converter top in the process. Also, when filling the ink converter and replacing it into the nib lightly tap it on a hard surface to ensure it is in place, I had a couple ink converters fall off the nib because they were not tight enough. |
Question: | Is it refillable? And if so, what cartridge should i use |
Answer: | It is refillable, and I bought Pilot Namiki refills which have worked well: http://www.amazon.com/Pilot-Fountain-Cartridge-Cartridges-69100/dp/B002G4DHGM/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1382587342&sr=8-5&keywords=fountain+pen+refills. I also bought a bottle of Noodler's Heart of Darkness, which has also worked very well for me: http://www.amazon.com/Pilot-Fountain-Cartridge-Cartridges-69100/dp/B002G4DHGM/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1382587342&sr=8-5&keywords=fountain+pen+refills. In short, if this will be a pen strictly for your desk, use the bottled ink, if this is on the go, use the cartridges. |
Question: | How does this one differ from the newer model |
Answer: | Not sure if it's accurate but according to the Amazon listing, the newer version comes with the Pilot CON-50 piston converter. My pen (an older model) comes with the plate converter (rubber sac). |
Question: | This is my first fountain pen. Do I need to use the converter if I use an ink cartridge? and vice versa. Which option is cheaper |
Answer: | Hey FearUP - it's really about personal preference. I like using bottled ink, so I have the converter in most of my fountain pens. I have a couple of pen that I call my "travel pens." The Pilot Metropolitan is one of those. For my travel pens, I use cartridges. That way I don't have to worry about packing or traveling with a bottle of ink. I think you are going to enjoy this pen. I think this is the best pen without a gold nib I have ever written with. I like the Metro better than either the $30 Larmy All-Star or the $30 Cross Bailey. To me, this is the best fountain pen at the under $50 price-point. |
