| Answer: | The tip of a fountain pen nib is usually made from a ball of very hard metal, to resist the wear of writing on paper. if you look closely (with a magnifier), you will see that this ball is split with an extremely fine saw cut forming the capillary that draws the ink to the tip. For smooth writing, both sides (tines) of the nib must be aligned perfectly. If one is lower than the other, it will present a scratchy edge, which will drag in one direction more than the other. This can be corrected by gently bending the tines back in alignment. Watch the Youtube "Adjusting Your Fountain Pen" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uuq9tuKRbCY) video, for some instructions. It takes patience and practice to learn how to do this.Another problem that causes scratchiness is roughness of the nib ball, usually found on cheap nibs which were not fully polished by the manufacturer. You can polish it out yourself, but the hard metal tip makes polishing slow. For an abrasive, I use 4 mil Herculene drafting film. The matt surface is a very fine and gentle abrasive, which will eventually leave the nib tip glassy smooth, after much looping and swooping over the surface (with ink). In really bad cases, I slip the edge of the drafting film between the tines, and slide the nib back and forth several times, then turn the film over and do it again, to get the other tine. Of course, you can replace the nib with a better one, but the new nib probably costs much more than these pens, and you will have to search long to find the right size. There are YouTube videos about that, too.After tuning and polishing, I have several Jinhao 599 pens that write smoothly, and a few that I can't make as smooth as I would like.I really enjoy tinkering with pens, but not everyone does. If this sounds like too much trouble, maybe you should look at some better pens.The smoothest writing pens I have are the Waterman Philias Medium point, the Lamy Safari Medium point, and an old Cross (Townsend?) with a gold nib, Medium Point. These pens came from the factory well polished and adjusted. All of these pens are more expensive than the Jinhao 599.P.S. If you want a very nice writing, inexpensive fountain pen, try the Pilot Varsity disposable pen. I have used a number of these, and all worked right, right out of the box. |

| Answer: | I think it can be filled both ways. When I look at the tip of the converter, it looks exactly like the tip of an ink cartridge. Since the converter is the push-in type, like the cartridges are, I am almost certain you can use the JinHao ink cartridges. My other JinHao fountain pen came with a converter like this pen has, but I'm just using the black ink cartridges that come in that 25-pack (5 boxes @ 5 per box). Also, by the way, if you look at "people who bought this also bought...", you'll see that they bought that 25-pack of black ink cartridges made by JinHao. They are, in fact, shipped from China, so it will take between 1 and 2 weeks before you receive them. |

| Answer: | I have several Jinhao's and have changed the nib. I put a Goulet nib on Jinhao 750. I have this pen and the nib is a smooth as the Goulet in my humble opinion so I have not changed it out. |

| Answer: | If you're using a cartridge, squeeze the cartridge once installed in the pen until you see ink starting to come out. Make sure the cartridge is in the proper way! The small end goes into the pen. Push until it clicks in. If you're using the converter, put it in the pen, dip it in the bottle of ink, and draw the ink up with the twist knob on top. Sometimes I've had to shake the pen to prime it. Hope this helps. |

| Answer: | The Jinhao 750, as well as the 450, uses the universal, or Waterman type cartridge. It has a short tube molded on the larger end, with and ID of 2.5 mm and OD of 4.5 mm and the length is about 65 mm in length. After unscrewing the pen handle from the nib holder, the end of the cartridge with the tube is pressed into the nib holder. The nib holder has a piercing "beak" that will puncture the cartridge end, and allow ink flow. Waterman brand cartridges, available at Office Depot, work well in this pen. Some of the really cheap import cartridges available on Ebay do not fit as well, and tend to leak. The included (sometimes) converter works well, or the Waterman converter works very well with this pen. The nib usually requires some tuning to obtain good ink flow, but is very serviceable once that is done. I've gotten more than five years constant use from some of the Jinhao X750's. Their only faults I've found are their weight, (brass construction) and the caps sometimes loosen and spin. Sugest you see "sbebrown", pen review site on YouTube for info on nib tuning. He has many useful videos and reviews of the Jinhao pens. |

| Answer: | At that price, they are not good plated. Even the steel/silver ones are labelled as 18k. I'd call them between medium and fine. Definitely not broad. They are a standard #6 nib so an easy upgrade is ordering a higher quality #6 nib in your choice of size. The pens are great out of the box and the checkerboard looks great in person. |

The pens from China have improved their quality a bit and use the international market, in particular the US, to make more money. Try and be patient and watch the listings. As a side note, the pen is very gaudy (not for the office), but the presentation box is very nice. Good luck. |
