Answer: The piston converter lets you use regular ink rather than the disposable cartridges in the pen. It replaces the cartridge and is filled by regular bottled ink. Do NOT use India* ink in any Shaeffer pen as the solids in the ink will kill the pen in short order. Remove the converter and dip the open end into the ink and then use the screw top to suck ink into the converter and then install in the pen. I use Pelikan ink, nice and dark and permanent, unlike Shaeffer's refill inks. This converter will work in ANY Shaeffer pen that uses cartridges, so its use isn't restricted to your inherited pen set. * India ink is for dip pens only, it will damage cartridge pens if used in them. Some "India" inks actually become solid when they dry and will destroy any fountain pen they are used in (found this out the expensive hard way. Pelikan seems to work best, IMHO, in converters. Just remember to occasionally flush out the pen section (where the cartridge/converter plugs into) with clear water to keep build ups to a minimum, and you should have years of use from your inheritance. Oh, and don't press hard on the pen, that can wreck it in short order.

Answer: I don't know but I wouldn't buy these anyway. They are poorly made and failure prone.
