| Answer: | Appliances are rated in watts rather than amps. To see the amps, divide the wattage by 120 volts. Therefore your 1700 watt oven will draw 14.17 amps. According to American Wire Gauge table listed on wikipedia, a short extension cord with 18 gauge wire can handle 10 amps. Therefore, I'd advise an extension cord with 14 gauge wire or greater. Backwards from what you'd expect, the smaller the wire gauge number, the greater it's current capacity. Be advised that all plugs & jacks are friction points and you should monitor for any heat generated where cords join together. Bottom line, these short extension cords are designed for computer related devices with low current requirements and not designed for small appliances with heating elements. |
