Answer:	This is an interesting question. The polarity of charge developed by a van de Graaff generator depends on the material used for the moving belt. The American Educational unit has a rubber belt and, I believe, develops a positive charge on the large sphere.

Answer:	A rubber belt is driven from the base to the metal sphere on plastic rollers. The movement of the belt causes excess static electric charge to build up. Some of the charge is collected by a sharp bar of metal in the base near the belt. The opposite charge is collected by a similar metal bar in the sphere. The bar is attached to the sphere. The excess charge distributes itself over the sphere. At the base, the oppositely charged bar is connected to the handheld smaller sphere via wire. As the small sphere is brought near the large a potential (voltage) is built to the point where there is sufficient potential to ionize the air gap between the spheres. This provides a conductive path for a spark. My machine generates 6-inch sparks. Be aware this machine generates thousands of volts. Now it is static volts (no current) so it should not be lethal. However if you are not careful, this thing's bite will certainly get your attention! Remember to touch the spheres together after you turn off the machine to discharge them. Also the ionization generates ozone (you can smell it) which can affect folks with respiratory issues.

Answer:	Hi This machine will spark across about 4 to 5 centimeters without any problems which would indicate about 100,000 volts. Voltage is only one factor and because the Leyden jars are rather small the current is modest so if you are looking for a solid crack you may be disappointed. The machine appears well made and is quite satisfactory for light use. I have fitted an electric motor drive on my one to stop people from over cranking and thereby damaging the machine. (Usually the ultimate fate of all Wimshurst machines.) You can add additional Leyden jars to increase the power of the spark if you want to.

Answer:	My AAs bought in about July 2017 are stamped 12-2026. The AAs I bought in late 2015 or so are stamped 8-2025. The 9Vs I bought in early 2017 are stamped 8-2021. The AAAs I bought in early to mid 2017 are stamped 6-2027. The D cells I bought in December 2017 are stamped 10-2022. All are shrink wrapped so they can't make contact with other batteries or metal items in whatever drawer or box you store them in. I haven't had a dud yet and have used about 200 Amazon alkaline batteries.

Answer:	The Amazon brand of alkaline battery meets expectations. I have used at least 50 in all major sizes over the past 2-3 years. None have leaked and only one has been DOA. Several Duracells have leaked on me and a couple of Dollar General brand alkalines have as well. The Amazon batteries are either cheaper or competitively priced therefore I have bought the 9 volts, AAs and AAAs in bulk and the Cs and Ds as I need them.

Answer:	Perhaps with extremely heavy use, but not likely. I use mine for demonstrations almost monthly and the disks work fine. I did have to replace the gear due to the fact that the plastic broke, but I do move mine to varying locations, which could have been the cause of the break.

Answer:	The settings allow you to enter up to 20volts. Open circuit, I read a max of 21 volts peak to peak. When connected to a 50 ohm load, the voltage measured drops in half (I assume that the impedance of the Koolertron is 50 ohms, so attaching a 50 ohm load would cut the voltage in half). The difference between the setting and what I measured on my scope could be calibration of either device. I am reading some noise on the signal, so that could also be causing the slight difference. Answer:	If you connect this hand crank generator to a battery thinking you will recharge it, it will not work unless there is a diode in the wire blocking electrons from moving to the hand crank, which will make the handle revolve. It is a DC motor that acts as a generator. You would want the flow of electrons only going to the battery. Depending on the capacity of your battery, (Amp/hours) it would take forever to charge...A typical cell phone battery is about 3000 mAh, this may produce 700 mA under the best conditions. So it would take more than 4.5 hours of cranking to charge that phone battery (this is assuming 100% efficiency, which is not realistic).

Answer:	Generally no. You might be able to use it as part of a "sound" but it's not voltage controlled so it's not going to change unless you turn a knob. Synthesizer oscillators are voltage controlled and the control section is tuned to the type of control voltages you use, commonly 1V/Octave.
Question:	Would this work well as a modular synthesizer oscillator
Answer:	Soldering is easy but a developed skill. Techs tend to put the iron on the pads and then apply solder. Wrong! Correct way is to tin your soldering iron ( put a small amount of solder on your iron before you touch the pad) this will allow the solder to flow to the pad and component lead without heating the epoxy board and lifting the pads. If your solder doesn’t flow readily, remove the iron from the pad quickly. Don’t linger and wait for the heat to transfer. It’s also a good idea to obtain a small package of solder flux. It cleans the leads and pads and allows good flow . Most electronics solder has a pine rosin flux core. I generally use a 66/44 rosin core solder without any problems. You should practice your soldering on a scrap piece of electronics until you are satisfied that you are proficient. Soldering wires to pads .

Answer:	So i'm having the same problem. The sine wave is more of a triangle with a slight curve and it only seems to work at the top end of the frequency range in each group. As I turn the frequency down it just goes into pure distortion. Is this a problem with how I put the board together or is this something in the components? Have you guys figured it out? I'm also using a 12v supply right now and waiting for a 9v to see if it decreases the distortion. Please Help!

Answer:	Yes it can be. You will need a 50 amp breaker for a generator this size and make sure the power supply cord is rated for 50 amps also. I purchased the Conntech bundle package which includes a 15ft power cord along with the plug-in box for $169 here on Amazon along with the 50amp double pole breaker for about $20.
