From what I understand some portion of it is plastic, but Im not sure if the entire piece is made of plastic or not. Since it is " Silver plated ", it's very possible that the entire piece is made of plastic.

Answer:	That is correct, there is not an on/off switch. I just wedge a piece of cardstock between the connectors so I don't run the batteries downs.
