| Answer: | The boards in total composition are acid free at time of manufacture, but they don't remain that way over time as the core of the board is acidic. The boards have a coating on one side (the smooth side) that acts as a buffer / alkaline reserve. This side should be the only side that touches anything. The rough side is acidic. When used as a comic book backer the buffer deteriorates over time due to the acidity of the comic book as well as the board itself. This happens within 3-5 years depending on environmental conditions and necessitates replacement of the board. The vendor will even admit to this fact. |
