14 best scanners 35mm
A 35mm scanner, often referred to as a slide negative scanner, is a specialized device designed for digitizing 35mm film slides and negatives. These scanners are commonly used in various contexts, including photography, archiving, and digital conversion. Here's what you need to know about 35mm scanners:
Purpose: 35mm scanners are designed specifically for converting analog film slides and negatives into digital format. This process allows for easy viewing, sharing, and archiving of old film-based photographs.
Types: There are different types of 35mm scanners available, including dedicated film scanners and flatbed scanners with film scanning capabilities.Dedicated film scanners are often preferred for their high-resolution scanning capabilities and color accuracy.
Resolution: The quality of the scanned image is determined by the scanner's resolution, usually measured in dots per inch (dpi). Higher resolution scanners can capture more detail and produce higher-quality digital images.
Color Depth: The color depth or bit depth of a scanner affects its ability to capture color accuracy. Most 35mm scanners have a color depth of 24 bits, allowing them to capture millions of colors.
Film Types: 35mm scanners can handle various film formats, including 35mm slides, 35mm filmstrips, and 35mm negatives. Some models may also support medium-format films.
Software: Scanner software plays a crucial role in the scanning process. It provides options for adjusting color balance, brightness, contrast, and other image settings. Additionally, software often includes features for removing dust and scratches from scanned images.
Compatibility: Check the compatibility of the scanner with your computer operating system. Ensure that the scanner's drivers and software are compatible with your computer for a smooth scanning experience.
Speed: Scanning speed varies between different models. Faster scanners can process multiple slides or negatives more quickly, which can be important for large scanning projects.
Connectivity: 35mm scanners typically connect to a computer via USB or other standard interfaces. Some models may offer Wi-Fi or network connectivity for added convenience.
Price Range: The cost of 35mm scanners can vary significantly depending on their features and capabilities. Entry-level models are more budget-friendly, while professional-grade scanners with higher resolutions and advanced features tend to be more expensive.
Archiving and Preservation: Scanning 35mm film is an essential step in preserving old photographs and preventing their deterioration. Digital copies can be stored safely and easily shared with others.
When choosing a 35mm scanner, consider your specific needs, such as the volume of scanning you'll be doing, the desired quality of scans, and any additional features you require. Read user reviews and compare specifications to find a scanner that best suits your requirements for digitizing 35mm film slides and negatives.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the tv jack for? the manual said it is a phone jack, but none of tv has a phone plug |
Answer: | While it's true that camera "film" can't be exposed to light, DEVELOPED film becomes a "negative", which CAN be exposed to light. So far, I've converted about 200 35 mm slides to digital photos without any problems. I haven't tried using negatives yet, but I'm sure the result will be the same. It's a fantastic little machine. |
Question: | Can this scan 120 film |
Answer: | With a Mac, you have to save images to an SD card or the device's built-in memory (only 128 MB). Then you choose USB Upload and you can transfer the images to your computer. |
Question: | Are the Reels for 8mm film scanning included or are they an extra cost? None are shown in the advertisement |
Answer: | I'm not sure about that as I have only produced a digital image from a negative. |
Question: | Does this connect to the computer to save the photos onto hard drive or do you need the SD card |
Answer: | Not being an expert on the computer, I am not sure what "ntsc" means, but I do NOT use an sd card with my Kodak Scanner. I have the scanner plugged directly into my laptop, and the digital images go straight to the E drive, from where I easily put them into folders under My Pictures. So far I have done about 1,100 slides, and I am so very happy with the quality of the digital images. I also have had fun editing for brightness and color. Many of my digital images are better than the original slides! I am extremely happy with this product. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Which button do I push to actually save the image |
Answer: | See page 5 of the user manual which you should have received with your scanner. Assuming you have successfully scanned an image and are viewing it on the screen, you should see three icons on the lower left and lower right. Select the Save icon (same as what you would see in other computer programs) by using the Left/Right keys, and press the OK button. This will save the image. One you have scanned an image, you can also select the other icons: Delete or Go to Main Menu. Delete is useful if you've accidentally scanned the same image twice, or determine that the photo quality is poor and you don't want to save it. The Main Menu can be useful if you scan your first image, but immediately see that your settings are wrong (e.g. the device defaulted to negatives, but I'm scanning slides). |
Question: | Satexas: what cable and what computer allowed you to transfer scanned slides without sd card and reader? technique? i have a macbook air |
Answer: | I was only able to use the sd card when I scanned the pictures on the slide scanner. I have an sd card slot in my laptop which allowed me to save them to my computer. |
Question: | Does this work with 16mm reels |
Answer: | If you expect this to digitize a film reel, then no. It digitizes ONE FRAME AT A TIME. That is, one frame, one file. If you have 20 years you could digitize a movie. |
Question: | My 2" slides are in 3 mm thick plastic mounts. Will these go through the slide adapter of the DigitNow film scanner |
Answer: | I'm not 100% sure but I believe they will. I have only used it with paper mounts but they appear to be around 3mm thick and they work fine. |
Question: | So load a slide tray and the software will cut them out and save each one in a seperate file? Can you load on several photos and auto cut into files |
Answer: | You can, yes. The software (Silverlight) lets you do batch scanning where you set the multiple scan areas and then hit batch and it scans them in order. You must set the scan area for the tray as well (Not automatic), but it works without the trays as well. |
Question: | how does this compare to the Plustek for 35mm scans |
Answer: | I agree with B. Menke on this. While I do not have a Plustek, I do use a primefilm xas (and before a primefilm xa) for 35mm film scanning, A dedicated 35mm film scanner of decent quality will give better scans than a flatbed can. However, the Epson V850 is more versatile and I use it for medium and large format film. The Epson is the way to go if you don't exclusively shoot 35mm film and cannot afford to get two scanners. |
Question: | How do you use the fluid mount tray?. Does the film get wet?. Can you use it without the fluid ?. Thank you |
Answer: | I would Google/YouTube "Wet Scanning" to get more details. But, to answer your question, yes the film will get wet. You put special fluid in the tray and then put your negative in it. At a basic level, wet scanning will help at filling in scratches, reduce/eliminate light scattering and refraction, hold the image flat to the glass, and a variety of other benefits that can help improve the image quality for scanning. It adds quite a few steps (and time) to your workflow process. Unless you were working on a special project (books, etc.), going to make large prints, I wouldn't wet scan. |
Question: | Anybody own the V600 and this one and can offer an opinion on the difference? I can read the specs, interested in your direct experience |
Answer: | Improved film holders. Also get a 2nd set to assist faster loading if working on larger projects. Upgraded software. Easier to use and faster scans, in my opinion, though may just be I am loading new set as soon as scan is completing. 600 is still a good machine but newer is usually improved and better. Hardware is not much different. Both out of same factory in Indonesia |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have tons of photos I want to digitally convert onto my computer.I'm using my hp printer's scanner, however it takes forever. Is this any faster |
Answer: | I used a HP scanner before and was not happy. This scanner works very quickly. The quality of the scans are excellent. I hope this helps. I just finished scanning over 30 yrs. worth of pictures. |
Question: | Can you use this scanner independently of a computer? Does it have a memory chip slot |
Answer: | There is no memory slot. There is one usb port on the back which connects to my computer. Try http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&infoType=Overview&oid=139863 or Go to Epson.com, select scanners and follow the prompts (drivers and support / scanners/) , then Search for "V600". When the search responds , click Epson Perfection V600 and it will take you to the manuals. I hope you can get your answer there. |
Question: | How long does it take to scan 35mm negatives at maximum resolution |
Answer: | I'm using it right now, and it takes about 3-4min per 35mm frame at 2400 DPI with Digital ICE enabled. For 10 frames at this setting, it takes about 20 minutes. This does not include the time it takes to preview the images first, then customize the exposure settings for each one to maximize the output; that usually takes me an extra 5-15min. The scanner can only hold two 6-frame sections of 35mm film at a time. All told, it takes me about 1-2 hours to process and scan each roll of 35mm film with this scanner. If you just want quick images and don't want to adjust anything, it can scan 10 frames in about 8 minutes at 300DPI with full auto settings and no ICE. |
Question: | Will this scanner convert negatives to prints |
Answer: | It is part of a solution which can do that, but it will not do so on its own. You need a computer, a photo-grade printer (with appropriate photo paper in whatever sizes you want to print), of course ink for the printer... and software which runs on your computer to do the task. By default, when scanning negatives, the color is inverted on the scanner, while when doing slides, it is not. The scanned images are provided to your computer for further tweaking, and then saving and/or printing. You can do low-res images, suitable for on-screen display (usually 24-bit jpg files at screen resolution) or high-res, deep-color images (usually 48-bit tif files in the 4k x 3k resolution range), suitable for poster-size prints. What this won't do is do all the intermediate steps for you. Some work on your end will be required... |

User questions & answers
Question: | It used to be that after photos are taken and still in the camera when roll is removed it cannot be exposed to light. How does this work |
Answer: | U can look up YouTube how to pull out w the screw, inside is 35mm and it does work w this scanner |
Question: | Does this unit save directly to a computer or do you have to save to SD Card and then to the computer |
Answer: | Yes. The scanner records the images (JPG) on removable media like a camera or directly to the computer via USB cable (included). You can transfer via USB or by removing the media and transferring it that way |
Question: | Does the type of media inserted determine the number of megapixels an image is converted to |
Answer: | There is no tray, you push the 1st slide in. It is not in the center for the picture to show completely so you use the 2nd slide to push the 1st slide in position and after digitizing the 1st slide you continue to push the 2nd slide all the way in. The 1st slide is not yet all the way out so you push the 3rd slide in a little way so you can get the 1st slide out. Continue with all your slides. Once you do about 10-15 slides it become very routine and works well. |
Question: | The ntsc out is really useless, only way to get digital images is to write to the sd card, correct |
Answer: | I don’t know about the dpi but it is 14.0 megapixels (4320 X 3252). Much better than the old slides we have scanned in! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do you install driver software first, then connect and power up scanner or other way around |
Answer: | I use the Godox Xpro-S. I love the Godox products. |
Question: | What is the best THIRD PARTY (not bundled SilverFast) scanning software to use, that uses the Infrared scanning feature for dust and scratch removal |
Answer: | Hello, yes it is Imaging Edge, you can download it for free from our website. It comes with three pieces of software, Remote to shoot tethered or wireless depending on your camera model. Edit, to develop your RAW images, combine pixel shift pictures and View to review and organize your pictures. |
Question: | Will it work with mac's new os, high sierra |
Answer: | Yup, really nice to not have 4K limitations time limitation. Wish it would be possible with the A7R III with firmware |
Question: | There are so many bad reviews for this product. What's a better alternative at this price range |
Answer: | a7R3 with MC-11 adapter for Canon lenses "hunts" a LOT and for me was not acceptable except to use on manual for macro work. Thus, I expect the adapters will not work for the R4 either. You would not want to buy this great camera and then use Canon lenses. Besides the functionality questions, from a business perspective, Canon and Nikon are getting so far behind Sony and are way undercapitalized compared to Sony, I see their problem getting worse and Sony continuing to rapidly gain market share. The value of my Canon lenses dropped dramatically in the time it took me to bite the bullet and sell all my Canon equipment. |

The difference between the two is mapped into and generates its unique color profile. The calibration and characterization of image devices help ensure that during the production process, an image is reproduced as accurately as possible.
iSRD - a highly reliable and comprehensive solution for infrared-based dust and scratch removal.
Slides and negatives always have small dust particles and tiny scratches on them, even when handled very carefully. Removing them one-by-one takes a tremendous amount of time, since often hundreds or thousands of small defects (dust grains or lint) are found on the original image, which only becomes visible after digitization. PlustekOpticFilm has a reliable solution to this problem.
The OpticFilm 8200i scanner has an infrared channel that finds all the the dust and scratches on the film surface. The infrared light has a very wide wave-length, which allows it to pass through film emulsion of negatives and slides without resistance, as opposed to scratches and dust particles that reflect it.
iSRD utilizes this behavior as follows (Automatic)
- Step 1 : Use white light for regular RGB scan.
- Step 2 : Use infrared scan that captures defects like dust and scratches only.
- Step 3 : Maker the dust and scratch on image.
- Step 4 : Calculative dust and scratch removal takes effect, only where the infrared channel has detected any defects without losing any important details.
In conclusion, OpticFilm 8200i Series can automatically remove the dust and scratches from the scanned image.
Dust and scratches are removed during the scanning process, eliminating the need for post-process removal.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will it scan half-frame 35 mm slides |
Answer: | If the half-frame slides are mounted in standard 2"×2" mounts you can easily load them in the slide carrier. You can crop the image in the scanning software or subsequently in other image editing software. |
Question: | How many mp (megapixels) is the max. capability of this scanner? maybe i don't understand the math, but 10k x 10k seems like 100mp... is that correct |
Answer: | Your math is basically correct. A full frame 35mm negative at 10K resolution is about 9000 by 13000 pixels, which, as you noted is 117 Mpixels (and just over a GB if you save the IR layer along with all the colors). I also believe (but can't locate the source) that the actual scan limits are 5K along the CCD and 10K for the stepper, implying that interpolated values are used for every other horizontal pixel. |
Question: | Will this work with Windows 10 an its latest builds |
Answer: | I am using it on Windows 10 build 1809 and it works very well. |
Question: | I don't understand why this pacific scanner has much higher rating/reviews than the more expensive/more capable pacific xas scanner? & the plustek's |
Answer: | Probably it's because the XAs has an automatic film advance mechanism that reviewers say is unreliable and breaks. This model is essentially the same without the auto film advance. |

Question: | How long it takes (mm:ss) for full resolution scan - with 2x multi-exposure and iSRD (dust removal) on. Thanks |
Answer: | It all up to your computer. A fast computer wold take about 2 minutes. Per Plustek.Good Question.Anthony J Argy SrFull Color Copier Inc. |
Question: | How "One Touch" is one touch? I want to scan thousands of slides into tiffs and later spend time with only a few to "fix" with software editor |
Answer: | The scanner does not have an automatic advance for slides or film, rather you put the content into the carriage, then insert it to the scanner and each advance is manual. Once you get your settings for scanning set, save them and reload the settings each session. You can simply advance the carriage to each image then click the 'scan' button. It's pretty quick. Your sessions can be for whatever film or negative you have. For thousands of slides, you're going to want to be patient. Scanning takes 30 seconds or so per frame, depending on the dpi you choose, but this is nowhere close to a 'thousand slides in an evening' proposition... |

User questions & answers
Question: | My old Minolta 'spy' type camera took 8mm slides mounted on standard 35mm (2x2) mounts. Any problems I should anticipate other than smaller images |
Answer: | Right -- In addition, I had to have my computer tech make a house call because I couldn't make it happen though I was connected to the internet. Turned out, since I had been working with Windows 7 I had to upgrade to 10. This printer also turns out poor color quality compared to my old Canon. |
Question: | What is the internal memory of the magnasonic fs71 35mm film scanner? some product descriptions say 128mb, but a customer service rep said 64mb |
Answer: | Go to the actual Canon site and look or type in downloads/drivers you can then pick your model and it is a breeze from there, the info that actually came with the printer to go to a special download site was not working. At least not for me. |
Question: | Does it scan black and white film |
Answer: | No, the TR8620 does not have that feature. Other Canon printers do such as the PIXMA TS9020 which supports printing on multiple media types such as CD/DVD/Blu-ray Discs. |
Question: | Does this model cover the full area of 35mm film/slide? Earlier scanners (by Kodak or Magnasonic) crop only about 90% or less on 35mm |
Answer: | I never owned a TS9520, however, I did a TS8520 and I find that my new TR8620 shoots out the copies at a more rapid rate than the slower rate of the TS8520. Know that different ink cartridges are used for the TR8620 which are not the same as those used in the TS8520. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i purchase the slide viewer on the $45 film slide scanner eparately? i have lost mine |
Answer: | Not sure. I went through the manual and found no reference to 127. I only used it for 35mm slide format which also included 126 film cut into a 35mm slide. I will try to convert some photos when I can get some. Could not have been more pleased with ease of operation or results. |
Question: | Is the software 64-bit? macs with catalina os will not run 32-bit programs. thanks |
Answer: | I don’t know I returned it as I wasn’t happy with it. Couldn’t get it to work properly. |
Question: | will this accept 2 5/8 size slides |
Answer: | Which/what mode? |
Question: | can I scan aps (Advantix) film cannisters |
Answer: | This might indicate a need to format your sd card. This can be done easily in a digital camera that accepts one. You need to find that function in the camera's menu. It can also be done in a computer. Google the procedure for your particular operating system. |

If the negative was good and in focus, I believe you could make a 8 x 10 in without a problem.
I used Photoshop to clean up some minor issues, like dust I failed to get off of the negative. I was very pleased with the old family photo's. This isn't a commercial unit, which might cost $2,500-$4,000.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this scanner produce a better or worse product than a flatbed scanner |
Answer: | Included sample pictures in my review (~July 2020). The flatbed scanned image pixelates much sooner than the negative image captured by the slide scanner. Neither image is as clear as the original photo processed from the camera negative, and both scanning formats are very sensitive to dust, so make sure to clean not only the negative, but also the negative scanner unit. I did not consider the Wolverine a great value, and I am still searching for a commercial photo lab to make prints/images from my negatives. |
Question: | Correction, I meant can I scan 4x5 negatives |
Answer: | The opening is only large enough for a 35MM Slide. So NO it will not do 4x5 Negatives. Carriers are with the unit down to 8mm film. |
Question: | Product description says microfiche is supported, but how? I have 3"x5" sheets of microfiche images. Cut the sheets into strips of 1/2"x1/2" images |
Answer: | My Wolverine came also with a tray for 120 film - Aperture 3.5" wide x 2.25" high. This might work? Or the vendor MAY sell a tray specifically for 3"x5" ... but I suspect that this is a bit too large for the viewing screen (which is about the same as the 3.5" x 2.25" aperture of the 120 film slide tray. |
Question: | Will this also scan microfilm |
Answer: | This comes with several adapters for various negative sizes. Will your negative fit? Depends on the size. If not this one, I’m sure there is one out there that can do it. |
