13 best digital slide converters

Digital slide converters are specialized devices designed to convert physical photographic slides into digital image files. They are a convenient solution for digitizing old slides, which might otherwise deteriorate over time. Here are some key aspects of digital slide converters:

  1. Purpose: Digital slide converters are primarily used to transform photographic slides, typically mounted in cardboard or plastic frames, into digital image files. This process allows for the preservation and sharing of these images in a digital format.

  2. Slide Compatibility: These devices are designed to work with various types of slides, including 35mm slides, 110 format slides, and even larger formats. They typically come with different adapters or holders to accommodate various slide sizes.

  3. Resolution: The quality of the scanned images is determined by the resolution of the converter. Higher-resolution converters produce more detailed and sharper digital images. A resolution of 5 megapixels or more is common for good quality results.

  4. Color Depth: Similar to other scanners, digital slide converters offer color depth options, typically 24-bit or 48-bit, to capture accurate and vibrant colors in the scanned images.

  5. Light Source: These devices use built-in LED lights to illuminate the slides during scanning, ensuring even and consistent lighting for accurate color reproduction.

  6. Scanning Process: Digital slide converters use a process that involves capturing a high-resolution image of the slide and then converting it into a digital format, such as JPEG. Some models offer real-time preview and allow users to adjust settings before scanning.

  7. LCD Display: Many digital slide converters feature an LCD screen that displays the scanned image in real-time, allowing users to preview the result before saving it to a memory card or computer.

  8. Memory Card or USB Storage: Converted digital images can be saved directly to a memory card or USB flash drive inserted into the converter. This eliminates the need for a computer during the conversion process.

  9. Software and Editing: Some digital slide converters come with accompanying software that allows users to edit, crop, and enhance scanned images on a computer if desired.

  10. Compatibility: It's important to ensure that the converter is compatible with the type of memory card or storage device you intend to use for saving the scanned images.

  11. Power Source: Digital slide converters are typically powered by an AC adapter or rechargeable batteries, ensuring they can be used in various settings, including remote locations.

  12. Cleaning and Maintenance: Proper cleaning and maintenance of the device's lens and sensor are necessary to ensure consistent scan quality.

Digital slide converters offer a convenient and efficient way to digitize photographic slides, preserving valuable memories and making it easier to share and enjoy them in the digital age. When choosing a digital slide converter, consider factors such as resolution, compatibility, and ease of use to meet your specific needs.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the tv jack for? the manual said it is a phone jack, but none of tv has a phone plug
Answer: While it's true that camera "film" can't be exposed to light, DEVELOPED film becomes a "negative", which CAN be exposed to light. So far, I've converted about 200 35 mm slides to digital photos without any problems. I haven't tried using negatives yet, but I'm sure the result will be the same. It's a fantastic little machine.
Question: Can this scan 120 film
Answer: With a Mac, you have to save images to an SD card or the device's built-in memory (only 128 MB). Then you choose USB Upload and you can transfer the images to your computer.
Question: Are the Reels for 8mm film scanning included or are they an extra cost? None are shown in the advertisement
Answer: I'm not sure about that as I have only produced a digital image from a negative.
Question: Does this connect to the computer to save the photos onto hard drive or do you need the SD card
Answer: Not being an expert on the computer, I am not sure what "ntsc" means, but I do NOT use an sd card with my Kodak Scanner. I have the scanner plugged directly into my laptop, and the digital images go straight to the E drive, from where I easily put them into folders under My Pictures. So far I have done about 1,100 slides, and I am so very happy with the quality of the digital images. I also have had fun editing for brightness and color. Many of my digital images are better than the original slides! I am extremely happy with this product.

Question: Is this the same product as the scanner included in all the bundles sold here some of which are 50% more expensive

Question: Does the 35 mm film have to be developed to use this device
Answer: G string is wound. I have the medium.
Question: It keeps saying it's full. i've got it hooked up via hdmi to laptop and an sd card <32gb. it will read but won't save. suggestions
Answer: Not sure but I've had 2 strings explode at the bridge. Love the tone but have never broke string until I bought these
Question: What kind of light source does this use? Does it generate heat
Answer: Yes it sure does, and they are the best, most extraordinary strings I've ever used. So bright, crisp, and full of punch. The bass strings are just as loud and punchy as the trebles. I hope this helps you hunter. God bless.

User questions & answers

Question: Thoes it scan advantix film? And which one
Answer: No familiar with that product. To my knowledge, it only scans negatives from common films (135, 127, 126, 110) and 8MM movie film.
Question: my sd card doesnt fit Why
Answer: There are 3 physical sizes of SD. Standard, mini, micro. Wolverine takes a standard version. I think they make adapters for smaller SD cards to fit into a Standard. Also, I did notice that the Standard SD cards goes into the Wolverine ‘upside down’.
Question: can the slide tray be repoaced
Answer: The converter comes with a slide tray as well as a tray that accommodates various sizes of negatives. All are free standing and easily slide into the device. I would presume that the manufacturer can provide replacements for any component. Suggest you contact Wolverine directly via their website.
Question: Are the images cropped as stated in a couple of reviews
Answer: somewhat

User questions & answers

Question: It used to be that after photos are taken and still in the camera when roll is removed it cannot be exposed to light. How does this work
Answer: U can look up YouTube how to pull out w the screw, inside is 35mm and it does work w this scanner
Question: Does this unit save directly to a computer or do you have to save to SD Card and then to the computer
Answer: Yes. The scanner records the images (JPG) on removable media like a camera or directly to the computer via USB cable (included). You can transfer via USB or by removing the media and transferring it that way
Question: Does the type of media inserted determine the number of megapixels an image is converted to
Answer: There is no tray, you push the 1st slide in. It is not in the center for the picture to show completely so you use the 2nd slide to push the 1st slide in position and after digitizing the 1st slide you continue to push the 2nd slide all the way in. The 1st slide is not yet all the way out so you push the 3rd slide in a little way so you can get the 1st slide out. Continue with all your slides. Once you do about 10-15 slides it become very routine and works well.
Question: The ntsc out is really useless, only way to get digital images is to write to the sd card, correct
Answer: I don’t know about the dpi but it is 14.0 megapixels (4320 X 3252). Much better than the old slides we have scanned in!

User questions & answers

Question: My old Minolta 'spy' type camera took 8mm slides mounted on standard 35mm (2x2) mounts. Any problems I should anticipate other than smaller images
Answer: Right -- In addition, I had to have my computer tech make a house call because I couldn't make it happen though I was connected to the internet. Turned out, since I had been working with Windows 7 I had to upgrade to 10. This printer also turns out poor color quality compared to my old Canon.
Question: What is the internal memory of the magnasonic fs71 35mm film scanner? some product descriptions say 128mb, but a customer service rep said 64mb
Answer: Go to the actual Canon site and look or type in downloads/drivers you can then pick your model and it is a breeze from there, the info that actually came with the printer to go to a special download site was not working. At least not for me.
Question: Does it scan black and white film
Answer: No, the TR8620 does not have that feature. Other Canon printers do such as the PIXMA TS9020 which supports printing on multiple media types such as CD/DVD/Blu-ray Discs.
Question: Does this model cover the full area of 35mm film/slide? Earlier scanners (by Kodak or Magnasonic) crop only about 90% or less on 35mm
Answer: I never owned a TS9520, however, I did a TS8520 and I find that my new TR8620 shoots out the copies at a more rapid rate than the slower rate of the TS8520. Know that different ink cartridges are used for the TR8620 which are not the same as those used in the TS8520.

User questions & answers

Question: what is the size of the jpeg that this machine scans
Answer: The output size will vary with the input media, but a 35mm slide produces a 5472 x 3648 pixel image. The resultant JPEGs are often too contrasty and/or need further editing. It's still a good device for the price.
Question: What is the DPI of the scans
Answer: While dpi can mean dots per inch on your printer, for a scanner it means how many dots per inch is the scanner scanning the image, i.e. the resolution of the image. 300 dpi is acceptable for general scanning but at least 600 dpi is necessary to convey all the information (details) in the image.
Question: Does it convert 120mm film
Answer: If you are referring to medium format film, the wolverine does not.
Question: Will this work for my mother' sold Kodak slides? I have a lot that I would like to put on disks for my family
Answer: This product works well with Kodak slides. I have copied almost a thousand of them. Occasionally there is a really old one that is hard to slide into place with another slide. It works to remove the piece that holds the slide and move it into place manually. I have been very happy with the unit.

User questions & answers

Question: can the picture be stored onto a thumb drive
Answer: No. It is a light source and will destroy undeveloped film
Question: This converts actual film rolls? Undevelooed film, not nefatives
Answer: Check to make certain that your batteries are installed correctly and not loose or in the wrong direction.
Question: What is the size of the image scanned from 35 mm negative
Answer: Worked with standard 35 mm slides
Question: Can you copy old home movies
Answer: For those, like me that have thousands of mom and dad with kid vacation photos and deceased Dutch Aunts and Cousins, I found a very small and short piece of double sticky tape is sufficient to hold the very thin aluminum slide cartridge frame into the slide scanner. So far, so good. At 72 years young those rare family slides flood my soul and I can produce 25-30 per minute.

User questions & answers

Question: will it scan 120 negatives
Answer: This product will not scan 120 or 220 format film negatives. It will scan 110 format negatives. The answer by Jerry D is incorrect. It is possible to feed 120 or 220 negatives directly through the slot (without a carrier), but the image sensor will not capture the entire image and parts of the negative will be out of focus. This appears to be true of the "Wolverine F2D" as well.
Question: Is there any way to change the jpg compression or use another format like tiff
Answer: I can't say with 100% certainty, but I don't think so. I couldn't find a way to do it--but I'm not overly tech-y either.
Question: will this convert Super-8 movies with out taking a "snap shot" each frame in the film strip
Answer: Don, NO. The Wolverine is a PICTURE scanner and not a Movie transfer device. To transfer movies you should send the reel out to one of the professional transfer houses.
Question: What is the DPI
Answer: Here is all the information regarding scanning :Scan Sensor: Not specified by manufacturerOptical Resolution: 20 MP; 5472 x 3648 pixelsColor Depth: 24-bits per channelFocus System 5.12 mm f/3.48 lensExposure :Auto and manualColor Balance :Auto and manual

User questions & answers

Question: Which button do I push to actually save the image
Answer: See page 5 of the user manual which you should have received with your scanner. Assuming you have successfully scanned an image and are viewing it on the screen, you should see three icons on the lower left and lower right. Select the Save icon (same as what you would see in other computer programs) by using the Left/Right keys, and press the OK button. This will save the image. One you have scanned an image, you can also select the other icons: Delete or Go to Main Menu. Delete is useful if you've accidentally scanned the same image twice, or determine that the photo quality is poor and you don't want to save it. The Main Menu can be useful if you scan your first image, but immediately see that your settings are wrong (e.g. the device defaulted to negatives, but I'm scanning slides).
Question: Satexas: what cable and what computer allowed you to transfer scanned slides without sd card and reader? technique? i have a macbook air
Answer: I was only able to use the sd card when I scanned the pictures on the slide scanner. I have an sd card slot in my laptop which allowed me to save them to my computer.
Question: Does this work with 16mm reels
Answer: If you expect this to digitize a film reel, then no. It digitizes ONE FRAME AT A TIME. That is, one frame, one file. If you have 20 years you could digitize a movie.
Question: My 2" slides are in 3 mm thick plastic mounts. Will these go through the slide adapter of the DigitNow film scanner
Answer: I'm not 100% sure but I believe they will. I have only used it with paper mounts but they appear to be around 3mm thick and they work fine.
Question: So load a slide tray and the software will cut them out and save each one in a seperate file? Can you load on several photos and auto cut into files
Answer: You can, yes. The software (Silverlight) lets you do batch scanning where you set the multiple scan areas and then hit batch and it scans them in order. You must set the scan area for the tray as well (Not automatic), but it works without the trays as well.
Question: how does this compare to the Plustek for 35mm scans
Answer: I agree with B. Menke on this. While I do not have a Plustek, I do use a primefilm xas (and before a primefilm xa) for 35mm film scanning, A dedicated 35mm film scanner of decent quality will give better scans than a flatbed can. However, the Epson V850 is more versatile and I use it for medium and large format film. The Epson is the way to go if you don't exclusively shoot 35mm film and cannot afford to get two scanners.
Question: How do you use the fluid mount tray?. Does the film get wet?. Can you use it without the fluid ?. Thank you
Answer: I would Google/YouTube "Wet Scanning" to get more details. But, to answer your question, yes the film will get wet. You put special fluid in the tray and then put your negative in it. At a basic level, wet scanning will help at filling in scratches, reduce/eliminate light scattering and refraction, hold the image flat to the glass, and a variety of other benefits that can help improve the image quality for scanning. It adds quite a few steps (and time) to your workflow process. Unless you were working on a special project (books, etc.), going to make large prints, I wouldn't wet scan.
Question: Anybody own the V600 and this one and can offer an opinion on the difference? I can read the specs, interested in your direct experience
Answer: Improved film holders. Also get a 2nd set to assist faster loading if working on larger projects. Upgraded software. Easier to use and faster scans, in my opinion, though may just be I am loading new set as soon as scan is completing. 600 is still a good machine but newer is usually improved and better. Hardware is not much different. Both out of same factory in Indonesia

If the negative was good and in focus, I believe you could make a 8 x 10 in without a problem.

I used Photoshop to clean up some minor issues, like dust I failed to get off of the negative. I was very pleased with the old family photo's. This isn't a commercial unit, which might cost $2,500-$4,000.
