Answer:	This is a stand alone unit that works off batteries. It has two settings...one that checks the stripe in the bill and one that illuminates the various things in the bills such as the head of Jackson. It works with C batteries.

Answer:	I purchased this product for that very purpose. Thus far, the bills I have checked are not counterfeit since the color of the strips coincide with the bills' denominations (as indicated on the product's guide). This would not be the case with a bleached bill. Unfortunately (or fortunately), I do not have one to confirm this.
