User questions & answers
Question: | I am a new podcaster. Would someone be kind enough to explain how I would use this to interview someone over the telephone? Would skype be involved?th |
Answer: | Yes, you will want to use a software like Skype or Google Voice. You can connect the headphone output of your computer to one of the H5 inputs. |
Question: | If this unit is powered off and a USB cable is connected to a computer does it automatically turn on or will it stay off |
Answer: | It will automatically turn on with the option to select its use as an interface or storage device...hope this helps. |
Question: | Is the battery life significantly improved over the H4N? I like my H4N, but it's terrrible on phantom power for battery life |
Answer: | I can't compare it to the H4n. I got about 8-10 hours on the h5 using alkalines and phantom being on for nearly all of that time. It gives very little warning when the batteries are about to go. |
Question: | Judging from the pictures it looks to be made of plastic. Is this fragile or robust |
Answer: | It does not have a plastic feel. If you have ever held an H4n than this will feel somewhat the same. The H5 has a slim, but sturdy feel. It's not the kind of item that would break easily. The thing with the H5 is that it is so cool looking that you're always worrying about getting a single scratch on it. Fortunately, the rubber like exterior seems to handle scratches pretty well. Highly recommend that you get a screen protector as soon as you take it out of the box. I've held both the H5 and H6 and while the H6 feels slightly heavier and more professional with all the knobs, nice looking finish and a great color screen. The H5 feels lighter, has great build quality and you are more likely to use it because it light enough to mount on a rig or carry around... Without the fear of it breaking. I've bumped it on a few corners with my rig and it has held up pretty well. The only thing that feels like plastic are the adapters, but that applies to both the H5 and H6.Hope that helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used as an audio interface to my macOS for podcast live streaming |
Answer: | Podcast is not a live medium but a record, edit and upload kind of medium. But it can be used as an audio interface if you do live streaming. |
Question: | Does this output a separate audio file for each track? If not, then what device can do such |
Answer: | It can record a mono file per track. It can also create a polyphonic file with all the tracks. Depends on your personal workflow. |
Question: | When using it as an interface, does the 32 bit dual A/D converter mode work? Can you record in that mode straight to a computer |
Answer: | The dual converters on the F6 operate when using the device as an audio interface, but the maximum bit depth when used as an audio interface is 24 Bit Linear. |
Question: | What's the minimum sd card class/write speed the f6 requires for recording 32-bit fp |
Answer: | Class 4 for most recordings is fine. If you are recording 10 tracks with 32 bit float I would suggest Class 10. Most Micro an recent SD cards above 32 GB are class 10 anyway so it should not be a problem. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this recorder have PAN control on each channel |
Answer: | Yes. And, you can even put this control on the knobs if you want. Press Menu, System, Track Knob Option, and choose Mixer. Then you can set the knobs on the home screen to be trim, fader, or panning. |
Question: | does the amount of working memory have an effect on hardware and firmware crashes |
Answer: | I'm not sure I understand the question. If you are referring to the SD card capacity, this will not have any effect. |
Question: | Could you tell me Where it is made?Thank you |
Answer: | Zoom products are designed in Japan and manufactured in China. |
Question: | When are they going to add and overdub feature on this device? I don't understand why they wouldn't |
Answer: | Its design is specifically oriented around location sound recording for film and tv, not multitrack studio recording for music. The film sound workflow is very different - you always record one pass at a time, and you want to always just move on to the next take when you press record again. You would never do overdubbing on set like your talking about. There are other similar recorders out there that *are* designed for what you're looking for-- and conversely, because of how they're designed (they way you're looking for), you wouldn't want to use them on a film set. |

User questions & answers
Question: | It states it can use a 32 gig SD card. Can it use a higher gig or just 32 gig |
Answer: | I had an older digital recorder that only used 4 gig compact flash memory cards. I tried using 8 gig, but it would stop recording when it reached 4 gig. I keep a watch on this one to make sure it does not go over the maximum it says in case it performs similarly. 32 gig is hundreds of hours of mp3 recording. |
Question: | The device is listed as running on battery for 6 hours. Can we use it while plugged with DC power adapter to potentially use for 12 hours |
Answer: | Sorry, I strictly use DC power adapter which has a very short cord. You'll always need an extension cord. You may try getting rechargeable batteries to use if you plan on alternating between DC and battery. |
Question: | Does it really work |
Answer: | Several problems. When it is connected to a comuter via USB all buttons lock, ever after it is disconnected. You have to remove the batteries to get it working a again. Contacted Marantz about this and they send a programme to upload, which initially fixed the problem, but it keeps recurring. Also in mono mode it only records on one channell, the level on the second is so low as to be unuseable, and this needs to be corrected in your laptop. |
Question: | Is there a foot pedal available for this recorder |
Answer: | Hi, Marantz Pro support here! Our PMD661MKIII does not feature the ability to connect a foot pedal. For further support on this subject, please feel free to contact us directly - [email protected] |

User questions & answers
Question: | When you connect a mic into the input line. Can you mix it with the built-in mics |
Answer: | No, but ZOOM makes (and Amazon sells) another model that will record FOUR channels --- the "same" two built-in mics PLUS two LINE/XLR jacks: the H5 (which I also own). (See here: http://amzn.to/2l8U4nC) (that's a lowercase L and N) |
Question: | How can I use the zoom h1 as a dslr mic.? If it is possible do I have to press record on the zoom h1 and and press the record button on the dslr whe |
Answer: | Just a note about recording into a dslr: the bitrate and sample rate you set on the zoom doesn't affect the bitrate and sample rate recorded onto the dslr file. Your dslr always determines the bitrate and sample rate. (IE: for most Canon's that's 44khz/16 bit). The audio quality from the zoom will be better than your on-camera mic simply because the microphone itself is higher quality, but don't expect to be recording 96khz/24 bit audio straight into your dslr's .mov files! |
Question: | can I record a piece to video with the Zoom recording my voice and then synch it to video |
Answer: | Sure thing. I use mine as a primary aiduo recorder for my Nikon D5300. I use the sound from the camera as areference track and then stnc the wave file from the Zoom to the video using Final Cut X. Works perfect with much better sound quality. |
Question: | What does this device actually record onto - some sort of a memory card or flash drive? I'm looking for something that will record at least 6 hours |
Answer: | You get roughly 12 hours on the 2GB micro SD card included, in MP3 320kbps. Quality is excellent. If you want WAV format your looking at about 2.5 hours with the stock card. Larger cards are cheap though so it's upgradable. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used with any lavalier microphone, or is the lavalier mic connection accept only Zoom lavalier mics |
Answer: | It will accept most lavaliers! The F1 can provide 2.5V plugin-power. It has a stereo unbalanced 3.5mm input (TRS). |
Question: | How is the quality of the recording for natural sound? I.e. birds, cows, frogs, other animals from a distance, lets say 25 meters away with no wind |
Answer: | At that distance, not so good if you want to record at a distance I recommend a shotgun mic with a larger capsule, the F1 is designed to record subjects on camera at short o medium range |
Question: | Is this basically the same specs as the lav package except for the add on shotgun mic |
Answer: | Yes, the recorder is the same in both packages. With the shotgun package you get the shotgun mic, wind screen and a shock mount. With the lav package you get a lav mic and an extra belt clip. I've used mine a couple times now as a lav and a shotgun. I was pleased with the results in both cases. I would recommend this product. |
