14 best cheap audio interfaces

Cheap audio interfaces are essential tools for musicians, podcasters, and audio enthusiasts looking to connect their instruments or microphones to a computer for recording and processing audio. These devices are a crucial part of any home studio setup and are typically used for tasks like music production, podcast recording, voiceovers, and more. Here are some key aspects of cheap audio interfaces:

  1. Affordability: As the name suggests, cheap audio interfaces are budget-friendly options for those looking to start recording or improve their audio quality without breaking the bank. They are an excellent entry point for beginners and hobbyists.

  2. Connection Options: Most affordable audio interfaces come with a variety of input and output options.Common input types include XLR, 1/4-inch instrument jacks, and USB microphones. Output options often include headphone jacks and line outputs for speakers.

  3. Audio Quality: While inexpensive, these interfaces can still deliver good audio quality, with sample rates and bit depths suitable for most home recording needs. Look for a model that supports at least 24-bit/48kHz recording for decent quality.

  4. Number of Inputs: Cheap audio interfaces typically offer a limited number of inputs, usually one or two. If you plan to record multiple instruments or microphones simultaneously, you might need a more expensive interface with more inputs.

  5. Phantom Power: If you plan to use condenser microphones, make sure the interface provides +48V phantom power. This feature is essential for powering these types of mics.

  6. Compatibility: Check if the interface is compatible with your operating system (Windows, macOS, etc.) and recording software. Most cheap audio interfaces are plug-and-play, but it's essential to verify compatibility.

  7. Portability: Some affordable audio interfaces are compact and designed for portability. They are ideal for musicians on the go or those with limited studio space.

  8. Monitoring Options: Look for an interface with zero-latency monitoring capabilities. This allows you to hear yourself in real-time while recording without any delay, making it easier to perform or record.

  9. Build Quality: While affordable, it's still important to consider the build quality and durability of the interface. You want a device that can withstand regular use.

  10. Accessories: Check if the interface comes with necessary accessories like cables or software bundles. Some models include digital audio workstations (DAWs) or virtual instrument plugins.

Remember that while cheap audio interfaces are cost-effective, they may have limitations in terms of the number of inputs and outputs, advanced features, and audio quality compared to more expensive options. However, they are an excellent choice for beginners and those with basic recording needs. When choosing an audio interface, it's essential to consider your specific requirements and budget to find the best fit for your home studio setup.

User questions & answers

Question: Is the headphone jack on this for monitoring your inputs, or does your PC audio come through it aswell
Answer: Hi, You can monitor your inputs and listen to playback from your computer simultaneously, which allows you to create overdubs with next to zero latency. You can either choose to monitor the inputs using the Direct Monitor switch, or you can use the Input Monitor feature in your DAW. If using the Direct Monitor feature the input signal will be passed directly to the line and headphone outputs, whereas if you use the Input Monitor feature in your DAW, you will be hearing the audio you're recording back from your DAW. In either case, you can still hear any other audio playing back from your DAW at the same time as recording. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support
Question: What type of usb cable does this come with? is it a type-c to type-c or a type-c to type-a
Answer: Hi, This comes with a type-c to type-a cable. If you have type-c ports, you will need to purchase a type-c to type-c USB cable separately. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support
Question: Does the XLR input only record audio to the left side
Answer: Hi, When recording a single microphone, you should ensure that you create a mono audio track in your DAW instead of a stereo audio track. When you record onto a mono audio track, the output from that track will be heard on both sides of your headphones or speakers (ensuring the output is set to stereo), however, if you record onto a stereo track, the audio will just be recorded onto the left side of a stereo file and you will ony hear it on the left of your headphones/speakers. This is explained in more detail here: https://support.focusrite.com/hc/en-gb/articles/206849779?flash_digest=62885ef974b4eb116f3b3ea2c9b9c38ddb871473 Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support

Question: What is the max bit/ kHz recording rate? Thanks
Answer: The inputs only record at 16-bit. It can record in either 44.1kHz or 48kHz.
Question: Can I connect my Krk Rokit 5's to this audio interface
Answer: There are 1/4 inch outputs on the back of the audio interface so, yes. I have mine running to my Yamaha HS5's via 1/4 inch to XLR cables. Hope that helps.
Question: Will it support ios on ipad pro
Answer: Because I'm not an Apple owner (PC guy), I had to go look for an answer for you. I found a video on connecting Behringer to an Apple tablet. Here is the link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZ4xwFtm2fY Upon searching, I found another video on connecting a Behringer Audio Interface to and Apple. Here is the link. I hope that this helps. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HepAI-UT-6I
Question: How well does this interface perform in regards to latency
Answer: Up until recently, I could dial down the ASIO buffer to 64 samples and get about 2.5ms latency in each direction. However, it seems that recent Windows updates have wrecked ASIO4ALL, so I can only dial the ASIO buffer size to 256 samples, yielding a latency of about 10ms/21ms. Not great, but usable.

User questions & answers

Question: It appears that phantom power gets switched on all 4 mic pres simultaneously. Can I use dynamic & condenser mics together without causing damage
Answer: Because the one in the front is NOT powered. The rear inputs can power mics or active pickups, up to 48v. I run 9v batteries in all my active guitars, so they're already powered, so I just run all my guitars into the front input. If I'm recording my 4x12 cab, I use the XLR in the back with my SM57.
Question: will this power a microphone that requires phantom power? sorry if this is a dumb question, im new to XLR microphones
Answer: Your question has me curious. The data speed for this device will not get close to the rates requiring a cable with the thunderbolt 3 type throughout. The audio stream will get there just as fast with their stock cable and with a reasonably priced ($6-10) usb type c cable. The nicer cables are more about throughput than latency.
Question: Can it write four tracks simultaneosly
Answer: Audio is routed from the computer through USB-C to Evo. There are two 1/4” outputs on the back of the Evo to plug into speakers.
Question: Does this include a usb power cable that goes from the interface to the computer
Answer: My interface remembers its gain settings when rebooting. Both when I power cycle the unit and when my computer power cycles. Make sure you download the most up to date drivers for it.

User questions & answers

Question: Is Reaper supported
Answer: Hello, Yes, you can use the Scarlett 18i8 (3rd Gen) with Reaper. Best regards, Jay Lilley // Focusrite Technical Support Engineer
Question: When connected to windows through usb, do the drivers let me see each xlr pair as its own device in windows sound settings? i don't plan to use a daw
Answer: Hello, Yes this is possible in Windows. To expose additional channels from your Scarlett interface to non-ASIO applications (e.g. Skype, Discord, Zoom, Audacity) first click the Focusrite Notifier icon in the taskbar, then click "Expose/Hide Windows Channels": Best Regards, Anthony // Focusrite Support
Question: How is the 18i20 3rd generation different from the 2nd generation model? What do these changes improve on? Why were these changes necessary
Answer: The biggest change is in the headroom. These preamps and converters are cleaner and offer more gain than the 2nd gen. These pres also come equipped with the "Air" mode which adds some high end to model the ISA preamp circuit. The 3rd gen 18i20 also has 16 ADAT I/O channels as opposed to the 2nd gen's 8 channels of ADAT. The removable ears also help with portability for the engineer who doesn't want to keep the interface in a rack. If this was helpful, please consider purchasing from us (pixelproaudio on Amazon). We can help with support after the sale as well. We have it in stock and ready to ship. - Pixel Pro Audio
Question: How is the 18i20 3rd generation different from the 2nd generation model? What do these changes improve on? Why were these changes necessary
Answer: Hi, There have been several improvements made to the 3rd generation range of interfaces. Firstly, all of the inputs on the 18i20 3rd gen feature Air mode, emulating the classic sound of our original transformer-based ISA preamps. Secondly, the 18i20 3rd gen now has the ability to switch between Main and Alternative speakers connected to it using a front panel button. Thirdly, we have added a built-in Talkback function (allowing the engineer to talk directly to the performer), a Loopback function (allowing audio from one application to be recorded into another without connecting cables), Dual ADAT ports for recording 16 channels of audio into the DAW at 96kHz, optical S/PDIF and removable rack ears. Lastly, the specifications of the preamps and conversion have been improved even further - for example, the dynamic range has been increased to 111dB and the gain range is now 56dB instead of 50dB on the 2nd generation. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work with an iPad Pro with a usb c port
Answer: The iPad Pro does use USB-C, but that charging port it is not thunderbolt. The Apollo requires a true thunderbolt port and thunderbolt certified cable. Without it, it will not turn on.
Question: Does the solo works with the new imac mini m1 via the thunderbolt
Answer: We have not yet released a fully qualified M1 version, but many users are already having success with 9.13.1 as the basic driver is compiled for the new chips. You do need to boot into Recovery Mode and lower the security settings to allow the driver to be installed. Hope this helps.
Question: Will the thunderbolt 3 version work with windows
Answer: Yes, provided your PC has built-in Thunderbolt 3 ports and you're running Windows 10. We can't post links here, but if you Google "UAD Windows Thunderbolt" your first hit will be the full compatibility documents. Hope this helps
Question: How many plugins can it run having only 1 sharc
Answer: We can't post links here, but if you Google "UAD DSP Chart" you'll find a chart on our site that shows what % of each chip a plugin uses. If you stick with the excellent Analog Classics Bundle that comes free with your Apollo, you can run quite a few of them! Even with our more DSP intensive plugins, you can build 2 world class recording chains for portable tracking. Hope this helps.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you use a USB headset with this
Answer: We found that if you have the GoXLR, and a USB headset, that we can still get the sound over. Put a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cord from the headset output on the GoXLR, and into the Line In port on the back of a computer. Then, use the 'Listen to this device' option in the sound settings to redirect sound from 3.5mm Line In, and output to the USB headset. Can use a guide like https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/126383-listen-microphone-through-playback-device-windows.html to see the process. Couple things to note - If you hear a buzzing or feedback, you may need to get a quality 3.5mm Ground Noise Loop isolator, and be sure to get a quality 3.5mm cable, otherwise the sound may sound a bit degraded.
Question: Can i use this to get xbox audio through to my pc speakers
Answer: Yes, pretty easily I might add.
Question: Does this have phantom power for the xlr
Answer: Yes, it supports 70 Db of gain in addition to the phantom power. So it can run nearly and microphone you throw at it.
Question: Is this Mac compatible
Answer: Currently, windows only.

User questions & answers

Question: Is the software disk or downloads
Answer: The Software is downloads. ProTools first requires internet connection and has a small cloud coverage, they want you to buy more space. My ProTools sessions won’t open in ProTools first. I believe the AIR Instruments it comes with requires an Ilok dongle and Ilok account for activation. The HDH 40 Headphones are cheap made compared to the HDH 50s. The Mic is ok, the interface is nice made and nice looking. It’s worth the money Guitar Center still carries the only interface this one isn’t really circulated yet!
Question: Is it ever in stock? been waiting for a month now with it ordered an i keep getting a different arrival time.. is it worth the wait
Answer: Yes. I too received different delivery dates. It arrived as soon as it was in stock. It is worth the wait.
Question: will it still work if it connects from a usb c to a macbook that has usb c connection?, will it work the same with a usb c/usb c cable
Answer: It will you can even use adapters to change its connection to usb or thunderbolt
Question: Hi, can i use this with fl studio
Answer: Hi, M-Audio support here! Thanks for your question. I can confirm the AIR 192|4 interface in this package will be suitable as an audio interface for FL Studio! I hope this helps and If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us directly - [email protected] Thanks, Krishan

User questions & answers

Question: Is this interface compatible with logic 10 as DAW
Answer: If you meant, Logic Pro X, this Tascam interface works great. Just as long as the Tascam is powered on before you open Logic it will immediately be recognized and you can be recording within seconds at input defaults or configure as you please. No drivers need on Mac: plug 'n play. Thus far I've used it under OS 10.9 to 10.12.6 with perfect compatibility with Logic Pro X.
Question: Can this be used to play four separate audio files simultaneously, outputting to eight channels
Answer: Yes it can! You'll have to load your 4 files (or 8 mono files, or even more if you want to mix 2 or more together) into a DAW like Reaper and then assign them to one (or more) if the 8 outputs.
Question: I only see 10 line outputs, but it says 20. What am i missing here
Answer: There are also 8 adat outputs via optical cable and 2 digital outs via a single digital coax cable. These, in addition to the 10 analog line outs you mentioned add up to 20. The same configuration works in reverse for inputs.
Question: Can you record with 2 mics simultaneously? Some review article claims that because of the two outputs, you can't multi-mic record
Answer: Yes, there are 2 inputs which can be used at the same time. The tascam settings panel has a setting to either make them 1 stereo input or 2 separate mono inputs.

US-16x08

The TASCAM US-16x08 captures 16 mic and line inputs to your computer with clear sound quality and advanced features to manage big sessions. Eight Ultra-HDDA microphone preamps deliver the cleanest and quietest operation in their class while delivering up to 56dB of gain. An additional eight line inputs are provided, two of them switchable to instrument level for direct guitar or bass recording. Eight balanced line outputs are also available, two with a level control on the front panel for monitoring.

Built into the US-16x08 is a DSP Mixer for low-latency digital mixing. Each channel has four-band EQ and compression for polished-sounding monitor mixes. In addition to interface mode, the US-16x08 can be used stand alone as a standalone mic preamp. Mac and Windows drivers are provided, as well as USB Class Compliant 2.0 drivers for tablets like Apple's iPad. MIDI input and output are also available on the rear panel.

Ultra-HDDA Mic Preamps Deliver Low Noise& Low Distortion

TASCAM's Ultra-HDDA (High Definition Discrete Architecture) mic preamp design is based on discrete components, just like classic professional gear. They achieve an incredible EIN rating of -125 dBu, meaning their noise level is practically below the range of hearing. Other impressive specs include a signal-to-noise ratio of 100 dB, out-speccing anything in its price range. But instead of judging the design merely by test measurments, key components were selected following extensive listening tests.

Rock Out with Amp Simulator Software using the Guitar Inputs

The first two channels can be switched to direct guitar inputs. They're ideal for direct recording of electric and acoustic guitar and bass without the need for a preamp. Use them with amp modeling software, like the TH2 effect included with SONAR X3.

* Guitar effect plug-ins sold separately.

Angled design provides excellent usability on a desktop

The angled design makes desktop viewing and operation much more comfortable for tabletop use. All other interfaces have their controls on the front or the top of the device, causing you to crane your neck to read the knobs and switches. The US-16x08 are at a natural angle, making operation easier to keep you creative.

A pair of rack ears are also included for use in a standard 19" equipment rack.

Separate Volume Controls for Headphones and Line Output

The US-16x08 includes both headphone and line output volume controls. Even when both powered monitors and headphones are connected, the user can set an optimum level for each during operation. And when you want to work on headphones, you don't need to reach around to switch off your monitors.

Sleek Industrial Design Inspires Creativity

These powerful new interfaces are housed in modern industrial designs that are as ergonomic as they are stylish. TASCAM was the first company to offer a USB audio interface, and we have fused our years of experience with acclaimed German from designbox.

TASCAM's new US series satisfies the needs of musicians from an aesthetic as well as ergonomic perspective. With its unique honeycomb structure on the side panels, the main body has a sense of weight while also maintaining a delicacy that matches the user's needs. Honeycomb structures are a feature of modern architecture, but are also a vital resource whose exceptional technical structure we can use in design. As this structure is found in nature, it has a stability and flexibility which comes with being an organic form.
