14 best usb recording interfaces

A USB recording interface, also known as a USB audio interface, is a piece of audio equipment used for connecting musical instruments, microphones, and other sound sources to a computer for recording and playback purposes. These devices are widely used in music production, studio recording, podcasting, and other audio-related applications. Here are some key points about USB recording interfaces:

  1. Purpose: USB recording interfaces serve as a bridge between analog audio sources (like microphones and instruments) and digital audio software on a computer. They allow users to capture high-quality audio recordings directly to a computer.

  2. Connectivity: USB recording interfaces connect to a computer via a USB cable, making them highly compatible with various operating systems, including Windows, macOS, and Linux. They typically offer multiple inputs and outputs for versatile audio routing.

  3. Audio Inputs: USB recording interfaces come with a variety of input options, including XLR microphone inputs, 1/4-inch instrument inputs, line-level inputs, and more. The number of inputs varies from model to model.

  4. Preamps: Many USB audio interfaces include built-in preamplifiers (preamps) for microphone inputs. These preamps provide gain control and help boost the signal from microphones or other low-level sources.

  5. Audio Outputs: USB interfaces also offer audio outputs, such as line-level outputs, headphone outputs, and sometimes additional speaker outputs. These outputs are essential for monitoring and playback.

  6. Sample Rate and Bit Depth: USB interfaces support various sample rates and bit depths, allowing users to choose the level of audio quality and detail they need for their recordings.

  7. Phantom Power: For condenser microphones, USB recording interfaces often provide phantom power (+48V) to power the microphone's internal electronics.

  8. MIDI Connectivity: Some USB audio interfaces also include MIDI input and output ports, enabling users to connect MIDI keyboards, controllers, and other devices for music production and control.

  9. Direct Monitoring: USB recording interfaces often feature direct monitoring capabilities. This means you can listen to the audio source directly through headphones or speakers with minimal latency while recording.

  10. Software Compatibility: These interfaces work seamlessly with various digital audio workstations (DAWs) and recording software, allowing users to record, edit, and produce audio tracks.

  11. Portability: Many USB audio interfaces are compact and portable, making them suitable for both studio and mobile recording setups.

  12. Phantom Power: For condenser microphones, USB recording interfaces often provide phantom power (+48V) to power the microphone's internal electronics.

  13. Price Range: USB recording interfaces come in a range of price points, from budget-friendly options for beginners to high-end models with advanced features for professional studios.

  14. Multitrack Recording: Some USB audio interfaces support multitrack recording, allowing users to record multiple instruments or microphones simultaneously on separate tracks for greater control during mixing and editing.

In summary, USB recording interfaces are essential tools for musicians, producers, podcasters, and audio enthusiasts, providing a convenient way to connect analog audio sources to a computer for recording and playback. They offer flexibility, high-quality audio capture, and compatibility with a wide range of audio software, making them a crucial component of modern audio production setups.

User questions & answers

Question: Is the headphone jack on this for monitoring your inputs, or does your PC audio come through it aswell
Answer: Hi, You can monitor your inputs and listen to playback from your computer simultaneously, which allows you to create overdubs with next to zero latency. You can either choose to monitor the inputs using the Direct Monitor switch, or you can use the Input Monitor feature in your DAW. If using the Direct Monitor feature the input signal will be passed directly to the line and headphone outputs, whereas if you use the Input Monitor feature in your DAW, you will be hearing the audio you're recording back from your DAW. In either case, you can still hear any other audio playing back from your DAW at the same time as recording. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support
Question: What type of usb cable does this come with? is it a type-c to type-c or a type-c to type-a
Answer: Hi, This comes with a type-c to type-a cable. If you have type-c ports, you will need to purchase a type-c to type-c USB cable separately. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support
Question: Does the XLR input only record audio to the left side
Answer: Hi, When recording a single microphone, you should ensure that you create a mono audio track in your DAW instead of a stereo audio track. When you record onto a mono audio track, the output from that track will be heard on both sides of your headphones or speakers (ensuring the output is set to stereo), however, if you record onto a stereo track, the audio will just be recorded onto the left side of a stereo file and you will ony hear it on the left of your headphones/speakers. This is explained in more detail here: https://support.focusrite.com/hc/en-gb/articles/206849779?flash_digest=62885ef974b4eb116f3b3ea2c9b9c38ddb871473 Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support

User questions & answers

Question: Does the headphone out play audio from other sources on your computer or does that strictly deal with monitoring your own signal
Answer: Yes you can. I currently have the M2 driver installed and the headphone will (if you set it properly) play computer audio from any application, WinAmp, Pandora, whatever. You can also monitor what is coming from the inputs via the headphone jack using the monitor buttors.
Question: What type of USB cable is included
Answer: USB C goes into the back of the unit, regular USB A to the computer. It works great!!
Question: Can i use an usb-c to lightning cable to connect to an ipad
Answer: Not sure. The input on the MOTU is standard USB so if there is an adapter from USB to USB C then to lightning then maybe. There must be an interface designed for the iPad that would provide a better solution.
Question: What software and VIs come with it
Answer: It comes with Lucid, BigFish, Ableton, and a couple more. It gives you another DAW as well. The problem with the primary DAW they give is, there’s very little information about in on the net. I tried using it, but struggled because I had no reference. I started using Ableton, and found multiple YouTube videos on nearly all aspects of it. I’m very new to this type of thing, so I really needed some help getting started. Hope this helps.

Answer: Yes, works well with FL Studio! No latency, after setting up drivers.

User questions & answers

Question: Is it normal for every little touch of the mic or mic stand or wires or interface to be picked up loudly in the recording
Answer: Different mics pick up differently.
Question: Will this work on a macbook pro 2012 (non retina) on the thunderbolt 2 connector, using an apple usb-c -> thunderbolt2 adaptor and thunderbolt2 cable
Answer: It should but use the cable that's included
Question: Which of the Studio models, if any, can actually drive 250 ohm headphones? The 24c, sadly, did not
Answer: Not sure you are going to find a USB interface that will work those. Those are a very narrow use case style of headphones. I know that are marginally better for listening due to the damping effect. However, for recording and mixing a better choose would be a reference (flat EQ) design like the Sony MDRV6 headphones.
Question: Will this presonus iostation 24c 2x2 usb-c audio interface work with bandlab cakewalk daw
Answer: Yes. It uses standard usb drivers so if it works with your computer, it should work with any up to date software.

Here is the link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZ4xwFtm2fY Upon searching, I found another video on connecting a Behringer Audio Interface to and Apple. Here is the link. I hope that this helps. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HepAI-UT-6I
Question: How well does this interface perform in regards to latency
Answer: Up until recently, I could dial down the ASIO buffer to 64 samples and get about 2.5ms latency in each direction. However, it seems that recent Windows updates have wrecked ASIO4ALL, so I can only dial the ASIO buffer size to 256 samples, yielding a latency of about 10ms/21ms. Not great, but usable.

User questions & answers

Question: does this have phantom power
Answer: This does NOT have traditional phantom power, which is normally 48v for condenser microphones. Their website says “18v phantom power,” and I don't know of any condenser mic that uses 18v.
Question: Can you plug a guitar into this
Answer: Yes you can. Their is a "Line In" (1/4" jack) to accomplish this connection. You also (as on many audio device) will need to select "LINE" on the Input Channel (#1) which allows the device to format to the instrument Input Level. I have used this to record into my Computer Audio Software.
Question: Will this act as a digital to analog converter for my studio monitors
Answer: Actually I think it will, if you mean that you want to use it as an audio interface with your computer
Question: Are there any system requirements that I need to be concerned about? I've got a windows OS and a 64 bit and a 32 bit
Answer: It's plug and play on any OS. I'm using mine with a late 2012 MacBook Pro and have no issues.

Question: How is the 18i20 3rd generation different from the 2nd generation model? What do these changes improve on? Why were these changes necessary
Answer: The biggest change is in the headroom. These preamps and converters are cleaner and offer more gain than the 2nd gen. These pres also come equipped with the "Air" mode which adds some high end to model the ISA preamp circuit. The 3rd gen 18i20 also has 16 ADAT I/O channels as opposed to the 2nd gen's 8 channels of ADAT. The removable ears also help with portability for the engineer who doesn't want to keep the interface in a rack. If this was helpful, please consider purchasing from us (pixelproaudio on Amazon). We can help with support after the sale as well. We have it in stock and ready to ship. - Pixel Pro Audio
Question: How is the 18i20 3rd generation different from the 2nd generation model? What do these changes improve on? Why were these changes necessary
Answer: Hi, There have been several improvements made to the 3rd generation range of interfaces. Firstly, all of the inputs on the 18i20 3rd gen feature Air mode, emulating the classic sound of our original transformer-based ISA preamps. Secondly, the 18i20 3rd gen now has the ability to switch between Main and Alternative speakers connected to it using a front panel button. Thirdly, we have added a built-in Talkback function (allowing the engineer to talk directly to the performer), a Loopback function (allowing audio from one application to be recorded into another without connecting cables), Dual ADAT ports for recording 16 channels of audio into the DAW at 96kHz, optical S/PDIF and removable rack ears. Lastly, the specifications of the preamps and conversion have been improved even further - for example, the dynamic range has been increased to 111dB and the gain range is now 56dB instead of 50dB on the 2nd generation.
