12 best fire wire audio interfaces
A firewire audio interface, also known as a FireWire audio interface or IEEE 1394 audio interface, is a piece of studio recording equipment designed to connect musical instruments, microphones, and other audio sources to a computer for recording and playback. Here's what you should know about firewire audio interfaces:
High-Speed Data Transfer: Firewire (IEEE 1394) is a high-speed data transfer interface that was commonly used in professional audio recording setups. It offered faster data transfer rates than USB at the time, making it suitable for multichannel audio recording and playback.
Audio Quality: Firewire audio interfaces are known for their ability to deliver high-quality audio with low latency. Low latency is crucial in recording and monitoring audio in real-time, as it ensures that there is minimal delay between input and output.
Compatibility: Firewire interfaces were widely used in the past, especially in professional studios. However, as technology has evolved, Firewire has become less common, and newer computers may not have Firewire ports. Therefore, compatibility can be an issue for some users.
Number of Inputs/Outputs: Firewire audio interfaces come in various configurations with different numbers of inputs and outputs. Some are designed for home studios with just a few inputs and outputs, while others are intended for more extensive recording setups with multiple microphones and instruments.
Phantom Power: Many firewire audio interfaces offer phantom power, which is essential for condenser microphones. Phantom power provides the necessary voltage to power these microphones.
MIDI Connectivity: Some firewire audio interfaces include MIDI ports for connecting MIDI controllers, synthesizers, and other MIDI-equipped devices.
Software Compatibility: Firewire audio interfaces often come with bundled recording software or are compatible with popular digital audio workstations (DAWs) like Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Cubase, and Ableton Live.
External Power: Some Firewire audio interfaces require an external power source, while others can be bus-powered, meaning they draw power from the Firewire connection itself.
Legacy Technology: It's important to note that Firewire technology is considered somewhat outdated, and newer interfaces, such as USB and Thunderbolt, have largely replaced it in the market due to faster data transfer rates and wider compatibility.
Availability: Due to its declining popularity, finding new Firewire audio interfaces may be more challenging. However, used and vintage models are still available for those with legacy systems or specific needs.
In summary, a firewire audio interface is a recording device that connects musical instruments, microphones, and other audio sources to a computer for high-quality audio recording and playback. While they were once widely used in professional audio recording, their popularity has waned with the advent of newer interface technologies like USB and Thunderbolt.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this interface compatible with logic 10 as DAW |
Answer: | If you meant, Logic Pro X, this Tascam interface works great. Just as long as the Tascam is powered on before you open Logic it will immediately be recognized and you can be recording within seconds at input defaults or configure as you please. No drivers need on Mac: plug 'n play. Thus far I've used it under OS 10.9 to 10.12.6 with perfect compatibility with Logic Pro X. |
Question: | Can this be used to play four separate audio files simultaneously, outputting to eight channels |
Answer: | Yes it can! You'll have to load your 4 files (or 8 mono files, or even more if you want to mix 2 or more together) into a DAW like Reaper and then assign them to one (or more) if the 8 outputs. |
Question: | I only see 10 line outputs, but it says 20. What am i missing here |
Answer: | There are also 8 adat outputs via optical cable and 2 digital outs via a single digital coax cable. These, in addition to the 10 analog line outs you mentioned add up to 20. The same configuration works in reverse for inputs. |
Question: | Can you record with 2 mics simultaneously? Some review article claims that because of the two outputs, you can't multi-mic record |
Answer: | Yes, there are 2 inputs which can be used at the same time. The tascam settings panel has a setting to either make them 1 stereo input or 2 separate mono inputs. |

US-16x08
The TASCAM US-16x08 captures 16 mic and line inputs to your computer with clear sound quality and advanced features to manage big sessions. Eight Ultra-HDDA microphone preamps deliver the cleanest and quietest operation in their class while delivering up to 56dB of gain. An additional eight line inputs are provided, two of them switchable to instrument level for direct guitar or bass recording. Eight balanced line outputs are also available, two with a level control on the front panel for monitoring.

In addition to interface mode, the US-16x08 can be used stand alone as a standalone mic preamp. Mac and Windows drivers are provided, as well as USB Class Compliant 2.0 drivers for tablets like Apple's iPad. MIDI input and output are also available on the rear panel.
Ultra-HDDA Mic Preamps Deliver Low Noise& Low Distortion
TASCAM's Ultra-HDDA (High Definition Discrete Architecture) mic preamp design is based on discrete components, just like classic professional gear. They achieve an incredible EIN rating of -125 dBu, meaning their noise level is practically below the range of hearing. Other impressive specs include a signal-to-noise ratio of 100 dB, out-speccing anything in its price range. But instead of judging the design merely by test measurments, key components were selected following extensive listening tests.
Rock Out with Amp Simulator Software using the Guitar Inputs
The first two channels can be switched to direct guitar inputs. They're ideal for direct recording of electric and acoustic guitar and bass without the need for a preamp. Use them with amp modeling software, like the TH2 effect included with SONAR X3.
* Guitar effect plug-ins sold separately.
Angled design provides excellent usability on a desktop
The angled design makes desktop viewing and operation much more comfortable for tabletop use. All other interfaces have their controls on the front or the top of the device, causing you to crane your neck to read the knobs and switches. The US-16x08 are at a natural angle, making operation easier to keep you creative.
A pair of rack ears are also included for use in a standard 19" equipment rack.
Separate Volume Controls for Headphones and Line Output
The US-16x08 includes both headphone and line output volume controls. Even when both powered monitors and headphones are connected, the user can set an optimum level for each during operation. And when you want to work on headphones, you don't need to reach around to switch off your monitors.
Sleek Industrial Design Inspires Creativity

RME Fireface UCX
36-Channel, 24-Bit / 192kHz High-End USB & FireWire Audio Interface
The Fireface UCX is a highly integrated pro audio solution in an ultra-compact format for studio and live recordings. It continues RME's long tradition of designing compact high-end interfaces, packing into a half-rack size unit what usually would be spread out over two or three 19 inch panels.
Low Latency mastering grade converters with outstanding specifications.
Two mic preamps with the premium technology from RME's high-end recording bestsellers Micstasy and UFX, including the AutoSet overload protection.
A newly developed Hammerfall audio core, supporting USB and FireWire with the maximum performance and ultra-low latency operation, combined with the legendary RME driver stability and maintenance, on both bus protocols.
TotalMix FX with the complete Fireface UFX DSP engine, including all effects up to 192 kHz.
Monitoring Controller: combining the impressive flexibility of the TotalMix FX monitoring tool set and the optional RME Remote Control.
RME's unique DIGICheck metering and analysis toolbox for Windows PC and Mac.
Plus support for RME's Advanced Remote Control, active jitter suppression technology, professional reference level support, advanced stand-alone functionality, full 192 kHz operation, and last but not least two high-speed MIDI I/Os.
Is the first professional audio interface with Class Compliant mode to work with Apple's iPad, for perfect stereo up to 18 channel recording and playback, and the addition of truly professional I/Os.
So the UCX is a half-rack unit, which is actually more powerful, than most 19 inch units. All in all the Fireface UCX is the new compact-sized dream interface, created with care for every detail, and a new premium solution for any desktop and live usage, without compromises in sound, stability and ultra-low latency operation.
- PERFECT FOR LIVE & STUDIO - The Fireface UCX is a highly integrated pro audio solution in an ultra-compact format for studio and live recordings. It continues RME's long tradition of designing compact high-end interfaces, packing into a half-rack size unit what usually would be spread out over two or three 19 inch panels. In doing this the Fireface UCX marks a new packing record: 300 electronic components more than inside the already well-stocked Fireface UC!
- EXCELLENT SOUND QUALITY - Equipped with a new 2011 A/D and D/A high-performance converter design all I/Os operate at up to 192 kHz. The AD/DA conversion supersedes the outstanding technical specifications of the Fireface UC/400 with an impressive 114 dBA dynamic range on both record and playback. The advanced multi-bit converter architecture guarantees excellent S/N and THD specs across a wide analog level range.
- STEADYCLOCK - RME's unique jitter suppression technology guarantees perfect sound quality throughout, making the device completely independent from the quality of external clock signals. Due to the highly efficient jitter reduction, the UCX converters operate independently from the quality of the external clock signal, as if they are working with internal clock all the time - guaranteeing a pristine sound quality! SteadyClock allows the Fireface UCX to control the sample rate freely on its own.
- SETUP MEMORY - Internal memory allows for the permanent storage of six different presets of the unit. Therefore the Fireface UCX is able to operate fully stand-alone, without any connected computer. In stand-alone operation, it can transform into totally different devices by the simple click of a button. Furthermore, in this mode, TotalMix FX can also be controlled via MIDI.
- CONNECTIVITY - 18 Input / 18 Output channels, 8 x Analog I/O, 2 x Mic/ Line Preamps, digitally controlled, 2 x Line / Instrument inputs, digitally controlled, 1 x SPDIF I/O coaxial, 1 x ADAT I/O (or 1 x SPDIF I/O optical), 1 x Word Clock I/O, 2 x MIDI I/O (via breakout cable), 1 x FireWire 400, 1 x USB 2.0 (USB 3 compatible), TotalMix FX (with UFX effects engine)
User questions & answers
Question: | Does it come with the remote control |
Answer: | Mine did not come with remote control. I believe that is a separate part number. |
Question: | Is the midi jack standard? It looks odd to me |
Answer: | Unit cointains, 2x MIDI I/0. ( . . ) ( . . . . ) – Connector format ( . . . ) |
Question: | Does this have usb 3.0 usb connection. The back port only looks like it will take |
Answer: | The only USB connection on the UCX is a USB 2.0 B connector, however it will operate no problem connected to a USB 3.0 port. A USB Type A to Type B cable is included, it will plug right into a USB 3 type A (the blue kind). USB C would require an adapter. |
Question: | Will this interface work seamlessly with steam and other windows 10 apps? the last Thunderbolt interface i tried didn't |
Answer: | RME drivers are amazing this device works with all steam apps and windows 10 apps despite how horrible windows latest revisions are with audio hardware. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it normal for every little touch of the mic or mic stand or wires or interface to be picked up loudly in the recording |
Answer: | Different mics pick up differently. |
Question: | Will this work on a macbook pro 2012 (non retina) on the thunderbolt 2 connector, using an apple usb-c -> thunderbolt2 adaptor and thunderbolt2 cable |
Answer: | It should but use the cable that's included |
Question: | Which of the Studio models, if any, can actually drive 250 ohm headphones? The 24c, sadly, did not |

I know that are marginally better for listening due to the damping effect. However, for recording and mixing a better choose would be a reference (flat EQ) design like the Sony MDRV6 headphones. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the software disk or downloads |
Answer: | The Software is downloads. ProTools first requires internet connection and has a small cloud coverage, they want you to buy more space. My ProTools sessions won’t open in ProTools first. I believe the AIR Instruments it comes with requires an Ilok dongle and Ilok account for activation. The HDH 40 Headphones are cheap made compared to the HDH 50s. The Mic is ok, the interface is nice made and nice looking. It’s worth the money Guitar Center still carries the only interface this one isn’t really circulated yet! |
Question: | Is it ever in stock? been waiting for a month now with it ordered an i keep getting a different arrival time.. is it worth the wait |
Answer: | Yes. I too received different delivery dates. It arrived as soon as it was in stock. It is worth the wait. |
Question: | will it still work if it connects from a usb c to a macbook that has usb c connection?, will it work the same with a usb c/usb c cable |
Answer: | It will you can even use adapters to change its connection to usb or thunderbolt |
