10 best multipurpose dynamic microphones
Multipurpose dynamic microphones are versatile audio devices designed to capture a wide range of sound sources. They are commonly used in various professional settings, including live performances, recording studios, broadcasting, and public address systems. Here are some key characteristics and considerations regarding multipurpose dynamic microphones:
Dynamic Microphone Technology:
- Dynamic microphones use an electromagnetic induction principle to convert sound waves into electrical signals. They have a diaphragm attached to a coil of wire, placed within the magnetic field of a magnet. When sound waves hit the diaphragm, it moves, generating an electrical current that is then outputted as an audio signal.
Durability and Reliability:
- Dynamic microphones are known for their robust construction. They can handle high sound pressure levels (SPL) and are less sensitive to moisture and dust compared to other microphone types like condenser microphones. This makes them suitable for stage and outdoor use.
Versatility:
- Multipurpose dynamic microphones are designed to handle a broad range of sound sources. They can be used for vocals, instruments, amplifiers, drums, and even as a general-purpose microphone for recording or live sound reinforcement.
Directionality:
- Dynamic microphones typically exhibit a cardioid polar pattern, which means they are most sensitive to sound coming from the front and less sensitive to sounds from the sides and back. This directional characteristic helps to isolate the intended sound source and reduce background noise.
SPL Handling:
- Due to their robust construction, dynamic microphones can handle high sound pressure levels. This makes them suitable for miking loud sound sources like guitar amplifiers, drums, and horns.
Affordability:
- Dynamic microphones are generally more cost-effective compared to other types like condenser microphones. This makes them a popular choice for musicians and sound engineers on a budget.
No External Power Required:
- Unlike condenser microphones, dynamic microphones do not require external power sources or phantom power to operate. They can be plugged directly into a mixer or audio interface with a standard XLR cable.
Limitations:
- While dynamic microphones are versatile, they may not offer the same level of sensitivity and high-frequency response as condenser microphones. This can result in a slightly colored or less detailed sound, especially for nuanced studio recording applications.
Popular Models:
- Some popular multipurpose dynamic microphones include the Shure SM58, Sennheiser e835, Audio-Technica ATM510, and Electro-Voice RE20.
Remember that choosing the right microphone depends on various factors including the specific application, environment, and personal preferences. Always consider the unique requirements of your recording or performance setup before making a selection.

User questions & answers
Question: | I have two questions: 1. would this microphone work well for recording audio books? 2. would it work w/ a macbook air laptop |
Answer: | Yes that should work well with your audiobooks. As for the Mac laptop I don’t see why not it offers clear recordings for what I use it for. |
Question: | I need something that is compatible with both a Mac and an iPhone/iPad. Will this work with either or both |
Answer: | This is an old question but has yet to be answered completely so here goes. Yes, this microphone will work through USB with the macOS, Windows OS, most versions of Linux (that I know of), and will work with iOS (iPhone/iPad) devices that can use Apple's camera connection kit (30-pin or Lightning ports) as well as newer ones that use USB-C |
Question: | How well does the microphone pick up a talking level voice from a short distance, say 2 feet |
Answer: | Unfortunately no. This Is a Dynamic mike and it is designed for the speaker to be a few inches away 1-4 at best. What you really need is a Boom mike. If the point is to have people listen to you need the correct mike. For what you want this mike is not for you. |
Question: | Would this microphone be a good fit for a multi host podcast? Each host having one of these mics |
Answer: | this is not a omni direction mic where you put it in the middle and you can record everyone, this is a direct to your mouth, pointed right at your face mic (to put it in simplest terms.) if you want a multi host mic where you can set it on the table and everyone can talk "at it" then look for the Yeti mic. . |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is a pop filter recommended |
Answer: | Yes. |
Question: | Are returns/refunds available for this microphone |
Answer: | This would need to be plugged into a microphone input....your computer likely doesn't have one built in. You can get a USB interface to plug this mic into, then USB into your computer. Or you could just get a USB microphone and a pair of headphones. This is an awesome package for it's price, but it will need to go into a mic input to work. |
Question: | It refuses to turn on with my macbook pro. i have changed cables and ports. the previous model has no problems. any ideas |
Answer: | You do not have to buy a recorder to use the mic and headphones. |
Question: | It keeps having this constant annoying audio humming noise in the background when I plug my handphones into the mic, or play it back |
Answer: | Depends on which audio-technica mic. These ZDM1 microphones sound great in the broadcast dynamic category. They can make a good run at something that sells for $400+. |

Question: | Does this kind of mic require phantom power if used with a computer |
Answer: | Yes it will work well. |
Question: | Will this work with dragon naturallyspeaking on a pc with appropriate usb adapter? i know the prior version (sennheiser me 3-ew) worked well |
Answer: | Probably but very bulky unit that requires you to turn up gain |
Question: | Will this work with a sk 100 bodypack?. i am looking to replace a me 3-ew headset |
Answer: | I have not used the SK20 pack, but the mic has an 1/8" plug which I believe most/all Sennheiser transmitter packs will receive, so you should be good. |
Question: | Is this microphone compatible with the SK 20 body pack |
Answer: | This product was designed to be plugged into the wireless sending unit . However, if you mixer board has phantom power turn it on, it could work. no promises |
Question: | When I connect this into a 3.5 mm - xlr adapter and plug xlr into mixer board I get no sound. Can someone explain |
Answer: | Yes, you can either buy an adapter (you can get 3.5mm to XLR adapters for under $10) to plug it into your mic or line-in port or you can buy a mixer (Behringer makes several that aren't that expensive) that you can plug it into that then plugs into the line in on the sound card or computer. I have a Behringer 5 channel mixer I plug mine into that then goes in through the line in and into my Audition software from there. Works quite well. As far as USB goes there are USB to XLR adapters don't know how well that would work for you. Don't bother with PC/Mac mics they are low quality and would not give you nearly the quality this one would. |
