| Answer: | You could, but it likely wouldn't sound great. If you're buying a microphone like this, you'd really want to have some sort of interface with a decent mic preamp built in. Something like the Focusrite Scarlett Solo, or the ART USB Mix Project Series Mixer would do the trick. You'd be much, much happier with the results if you went through something like that. Most built in 3.5mm connectors on computers are connected to very bad preamps and very bad converters that are usually noisy and sound pretty terrible. |

But, dynamic mics like to be used close to the source so you'd be better off with it on a boom so you can keep it close to your mouth. The mics on the desk of most talk show host are props. The host and guest are recorded by techs using mics on boom poles who can change the position when people move around. Watch how Joe Rogan, Howard Stern, ect., use their mics in studio to get an idea. |

So MXL wins on sound quality, but few adjustments on your DAW, and Audio Tech sounds very similar But If you check out the "level up" MXL mics like the MXL 550/551R Microphone Ensemble, is little more expensive than MXL V64g. My opinion, the Audio Tech is a famous brand. Similar level, I can't say its better.. but i will always choose the MXL brand over any HOME use mic. In studio, I prefer the Rode Mics for my voice. |

Cardioid
The Cardioid polar pattern excels at picking up sound from the front of the microphone, less from the sides and has good rejection of sounds to the back of the microphone. Select the cardioid pattern for situations when you want to pick up specific sound sources, such as a specific guitar within an ensemble, and is recommended for recording applications where the acoustics are good, but not perfect. For instance, a cardioid pattern is less likely to pick up ambient noise from computers and recording equipment.
Omni-Directional
The Omni-Directionalpolar pattern picks up sound equally from all sides of the microphone. This is best used for recording in environments with excellent acoustics, as the omni-directional pickup excels at picking up ambient noise. The omni-directional polar pattern is less sensitive to 'plosives', handling noise and the proximity effect.

The Figure-8 polar pattern will pick up sounds from the front and back of the microphone with equal sensitivity while maintaining a large amound of rejection 90 degrees off axis. Figure-8 patterns are the most susceptible to proximity effect and are commonly used in Mid-Side (MS) stereo recording setups.
