My son made pretty quick progress on my full scale electric, right up until he had to reach three frets for power chords, at which point he got frustrated and gave up. You might consider a 1/2 or 3/4 scale electric, or perhaps a baritone ukulele (an instrument my son rejected because it wasn't rock-ish enough). We never followed through with a smaller guitar, as it was clear that it wasn't so much the finger stretch that was stopping him, but that to him the reward of being able to make the musical sounds was not worth the effort of overcoming the obstacle, unlike, say, having a completed Lego car is worth the effort of assembling it. We might try again when he's a bit older and, you know, less screaming and running around the house.
